Charles ‘CW' Wayne,
painting business owner
Charles “CW” Wayne, 64, of Frankford, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family and friends at home, Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005.
Mr. Wayne was born May 10, 1941, to the late William F. and Mary Catherine Pollitt Phippen in Salisbury, Md.
CW owned and operated his own house painting business in Ocean View, CW’s Painting. He was a member of American Legion Post 24 in Dagsboro, Selbyville Elks Lodge and the East Sussex Moose Lodge of Clarksville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Phippen.
He is survived by his soulmate, Dawn Hudson and her daughter, Trish, of Frankford; two sons, Charles Wayne Jr. of Georgetown and Charles Wayne Cristwell of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sisters, Joanne Jung of Port Arkansas, Texas, Barbara West of Orlando, Fla. and Mary Corey of Tallahassee, Fla.; four grandchildren, Charles Andrew Wayne, Dalton Cater and Brandon and Kyle Cristwell; a special friend, Bow; and many nieces and nephews.
He was loved by all and will be sadly missed.
A tribute to CW will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Mason Dixon VFW Post 7234 of Quillen’s Point, Ocean View.

Cummins M. Evans Jr.,

Cummins M. Evans Jr., 83, of Smyrna, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover.
Mr. Evans was born June 18, 1922. He attended schools in Smyrna and Dover and received a bachelor of science degree in agriculture from Delaware State College (now University), and completed graduate work at the University of Delaware.
Mr. Evans was a U.S. Army veteran. After 30 years of service, he retired from General Foods in 1982.
Mr. Cummins was an award-winning gardener and a lover of sports.
He is survived by his loving wife, Anna Marie Evans; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Reuben and Sabrina Evans of Bear, Don Evans of Smyrna and Cummins “Gus” III and Brenda Evans of Conyers, Ga.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Janice and Wayne Whaley of Gilbert, Ariz., Almedia and Silas Pendleton of Alpharetta, Ga., and Vetra Evans of Smyrna; three sisters, Elva Wells of Wilmington, Ethel Watson of Smyrna and Mary Monroe of Dover; two brothers, Henry Evans of Milton and George Evans of Penns Grove, N.J.; 10 sisters-in-law; six brothers-in-law; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, in Centennial United Methodist Church, 44 E. Mount Vernon St., Smyrna.
Services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 15, in the church, where friends also may call two hours earlier. Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Gardens, Dover.

Veronica E. Walters-Dize,
daycare provider
Veronica E. Walters-Dize, 57, of Seaford went to live eternal life in heaven with our Lord Jesus Christ Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005, in Seaford.
Ms. Dize was born Nov. 9, 1947, in Baltimore, Md., the daughter of Frederick Z. Walters of Baltimore and the late Marie H. Walters-Stephens.
She was a daycare provider and a devoted employee of the Holiday Inn Express in Seaford. She enjoyed cooking large meals and baking birthday cakes. She was a loving and caring mother, who often cared for the children of others as her own.
Ms. Dize would have liked to be remembered as a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Seaford, and a member of the Legion of Mary. She also was a Brownie troop leader.
She is survived by her father, Frederick Z. Walters of Baltimore; two daughters, Stacy M. Hufnell and Jennifer L. Sen, both of Seaford; two sons and two daughters-in-law, William F. III and Kristi R. Boyle, and Andrew J.D. and Angie Boyle, all of Long Neck; a granddaughter whom she raised, Shonna E. Nock of Seaford; three brothers, Jon Walters of Seaford, Mark Walters of Fallston, Md., and David Walters of Rehoboth Beach; a sister, Karen Taylor of Baltimore; and 10 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14, in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Seaford, where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in Our Lady of Lourdes cemetery . A reception will foollow in Our Lady of Lourdes Hall.
The family suggests that anyone wishing to send flowers have them sent directly to Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Seaford. Memorial contributions to defray funeral expenses will be collected at the reception.

Douglas Edward Rogers,
Cape Region laborer
Douglas Edward Rogers, 41, of Ellendale died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford.
Mr. Rogers was born in Lewes, son of the late Elmer L. Rogers and the late Lillian Fisher Rogers Clendaniel.
He was a laborer, becoming in 1996 a member of Laborers of Delaware Local 847 that now has merged with Local 199.
Mr. Rogers enjoyed hunting and fishing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Rogers; and his stepfather, James Clendaniel.
He is survived by a loving daughter, Paige Rogers of Lincoln; a stepson, Devon Gray of Lincoln; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Elmer Rogers of Georgetown, and Mike and Darlene Rogers of Felton; an additional sister-in-law, Lauraie Rogers of Bridgeville; a niece, Lisa Cannon of Long Neck; and a nephew, Shawn Rogers of Milton.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 16, in the Chapel of Short Funeral services, 416 Federal St., Milton. Burial will be private.

Randall David Hecker,
Amtrak foreman
Randall David Hecker, 46, of Lewes, passed away Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005 at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mr. Hecker was born March 25, 1959 in Baltimore, Md. to the late Harold Edwin Hecker and Nancy (Hallam) Hecker of Lewes.
Mr. Hecker was a signal foreman for Amtrak in Washington, D.C. for 16 years, retiring in l995. He was a veteran of the United States Army.
Mr. Hecker loved working with his hands, especially in electrical projects.
He is survived by his mother, Nancy H. Hecker; two sons, Jeremy Christopher Hecker of North Carolina and Christopher Thomas Hecker of Salisbury, Md.; and one sister, Holly Anne Reynolds of Isle of Palms, S.C.
Services will be held at Epworth United Methodist Church, 20 Baltimore Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, with interment at Henlopen Memorial Park, Milton.

Edward H. Swift,
retired from DuPont
Edward H. Swift, 84, of Lewes, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005 at his residence.
Mr. Swift was born Aug. 27, 1921 in Wilmington, to the late Charles and Emma (Nitche) Swift.
Mr. Swift was a machinist for the DuPont Company, working in the Wilmington shops for 30 years; he retired in l983.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Swift was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Barbara Jane; his brother, John C. Swift; and a sister, Rita G. Pierce.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marie Swift; two sons, Edward H. Swift, Jr. of Claymont and Jeffrey C. Swift and his wife Roxanne of Milton; a daughter, Sharon A. Wilson and her husband Jim of Wilmington; five grandchildren, Jamie Wilson and his wife Megan, Malcolm Swift, Kristen Wilson, Melissa Swift and Victoria Jones; five great-grandchildren, Taylor Wilson, Ryan Wilson, Brittany Swift, Kyle Swift and Haley Swift; and several nieces and nephews.
Services and burial were private.

John A. Faill,
retired chemist
John Alexander Faill, 78, of Fort Myers, Fla., passed away Monday, Sept. 19, 2005.
Mr. Faill was born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., on July 25, 1927, the eldest child of John and Edith (MacDonald) Faill. He was raised in Niagara Falls and graduated from Ridley School in St. Catherine, Ontario.
Mr. Faill obtained a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Princeton University and worked for the E.I. duPont de Nemours Company as a chemist and product manager in Niagara Falls, N.Y.; Memphis, Tenn., and Wilmington. He lived in Lewes for many years and upon leaving the duPont Company, retired to Ft. Myers in 1980.
Mr. Faill is survived by his sister, Susan Faill Sutherland of Naples, Fla.; his brother, Rodger Tanner Faill of Harrisburg, Pa.; his three children, Denise Faill L’Hoste, John Faill IV and James MacPhaille, all of New Orleans, La.; his stepchildren, Page Lewis Holmquist of Marine on St. Croix, Minn., and James F. “Chip” Adams of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and four grandchildren, John Faill, Micheal Faill and Ashley and Allison MacPhaille. His wife, Patricia Milligan Faill, predeceased him in February 1993.
Memorial services will be held at a later date due to Hurricane Katrina.

Alvin T. Jefferson,
retired welder
Alvin T. Jefferson, 89. of Laurel, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, in LifeCare at Lofland Park Nursing Home, Seaford..
Mr. Jefferson was born in Laurel, son of the late Harry and Nellie (Hitchens) Jefferson.
He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Mr. Jefferson worked hard for more than 30 years as a welder for Pipefitters Local 782.
He loved working outside in his lawn and his passion was gardening, where he enjoyed the rewards of growing many types of vegetables and fruits. He was always very particular about his cars and always kept them immaculate on the outside and well maintained. Neighbors and friends were always anxious to buy his cars when he replaced them with new ones.
Mr. Jefferson was a longtime member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Laurel.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Beulah “Bea” W. Jefferson; a son, Alvin T. “Tommy” Jefferson, Jr. of Laurel; a daughter, Sandra L. Jefferson of Rehoboth Beach; a grandson, Jon T. Jefferson; a brother and a sister-in-law, Earl J. and Aileen Jefferson; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Short Funeral Home, Laurel, with burial in Odd Fellows cemetery , Laurel.

C. Dennis Webster,
1995 Volunteer of the Year
C. Dennis Webster, 87, of Rehoboth Beach, died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, in Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Lewes.
Mr. Webster was born in Philadelphia, son of the late William and Anastasia (Whalen) Webster.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Webster had been employed as an operations manager and in public relations for a trucking company. After retiring from the trucking industry, he moved with his wife from Baltimore to Delaware in 1983.
He had served as a volunteer at Beebe Medical Center, and had been chosen the hospital Volunteer of the Year in 1995 and that same year was also presented with the honor of Person of the Year by the Delaware Coast Press.
Mr. Webster was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 28, and sang in the local Men’s Chorus directed by Bill Earl. He was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, where he served as lector, Eucharist minister and had been the head usher for eight years.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, LaRue (Van Tassell) Webster; a daughter, Anastasia L. Webster of Rehoboth Beach; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dennis and Jackie Webster and Darryl C. Webster, all of Baltimore; a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m., Thursday in Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes. A memorial Mass will be 11 a.m., Friday in St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, Del. 1 at Five Points, Lewes.
Burial will be in St. Peter’s cemetery , Pilottown Road, Lewes.

Robert W. Hall,
retired shop steward
Robert W. Hall, 55, of Long Neck and formerly of Hatboro, Pa., died suddenly at home Friday, Oct. 7, 2005.
He was born in Elmira, N.Y., the son of the late George Arthur Hall and Naomi Emilia Flickinger Hall. Bob worked for many years in Philadelphia for the Acme Supermarket Company, where he was active in the United Commercial Food Workers Union as an employee and shop steward.
Bob met the love of his life, Joan Martin Hall, when she joined the company. They were married Sept. 30, 1972. Bob worked for the company until he had to retire due to complications from diabetes. With sheer guts, determination and their support, inspiration and love of his wife, children, dog Dudley and friends, Bob amazed everyone. Bob traveled frequently despite his physical obstacles; he was able to climb to the top of the Grand Canyon, play water volleyball, bask in the whirlpool at Absecon Golf Resort and walk the rugged hills in Hawaii’s Maui’s natural splendor. Bob refused to submit to the obstacles and challenges he confronted caused by his enemy, diabetes, for the rest of his life. Despite numerous operations, including heart bypass, the loss of his legs, chronic infections and wounds that wouldn‘t heal, he laughed them off and rehabilitated himself, coming back stronger and more determined than ever each time with a sense of humor that seemed to grow.
Bob continued to meet every challenge with bravery, modesty and a positive mental attitude and sense of humor that amazed and motivated those who were fortunate enough to meet him and be considered his friend. Bob had many friends in the community and on the internet’s virtual communities. To his friends, Bob was made from the same mold as Christopher Reeves (Superman) and people flocked to him for his loyalty, to hear his jokes and to be inspired by his unique and indomitable personal philosophy and wit. Bob made you feel better with a joke, a bit of philosophy or a page from history. He will be sadly missed but certainly not forgotten. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Joan; two children, Theresa Carneros of Hatboro, Pa. and Patty Hall of Glenside, Pa. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 15, in the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services.
