Bjorn 'Barney' Kleveland, 75
retired merchant marine
Bjorn "Barney" Kleveland, 75, of Overbrook Shores, Lewes, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Kleveland was born in Norway and became a U.S. citizen Dec. 21, 1971.
He was a member of the Merchant Marine and retired in 1987 from Getty Oil Co. after 28 years at sea. He enjoyed waterfowl hunting and cooking. Mr. Kleveland was a member of the Lewes Yacht Club.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian; a daughter, Rebecca Elliott of Milton; a son and a daughter-in-law, Clark and Beverley Beck of Lewes; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Beck of Lewes.
Services will be private.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Sussex County Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 100, Nassau, DE 19969.

Martha L. Hill Slatcher
Mother of the Year
Martha L. Hill Slatcher, 89, of Lewes, formerly of Laurel, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, in the Lewes Convalescent Center.
Mrs. Slatcher was born in Laurel, daughter of the late Herman and Almeda Hill.
She was a member of the Laurel Church of the Nazarene, where she was chosen as Mother of the Year in 1989 by the members of the church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Slatcher; a son, Carroll W. Slatcher; a brother, Milton Hill; and a sister-in-law, Sharlene Hill.
She is survived by a son and two daughters-in-law, Harold L. and Faye Slatcher of Rehoboth Beach, and Nancy Slatcher of Laurel; four grandchildren and their spouses, Miles Slatcher of Laurel, Janine and Wade Bristow of Laurel, Todd and Christie Slatcher of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Robyn S. and Mark Veasey of Newark; and 10 great-grandchildren, Zachary Slatcher, Zane Slatcher, Trey Bristow, Cody Bristow, Bryce Bristow, Samantha Slatcher, Tyler Slatcher, Jason Veasey, Adam Veasey and Michael Veasey.
Services will be 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 6, in Short Funeral Home, 700 West St., Laurel, where friends may call one hour earlier. Pastor Ralph Fraser will officiate.
Burial will be in the Laurel Hill cemetery , Laurel.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Laurel Church of the Nazarene, 100 Walnut St., Laurel, DE 19956.

Marjorie S. Lynch,
Calvary Baptist member
Marjorie S. Lynch, 85, of Georgetown, formerly of Frankford, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005 at the Seaford Center where she had resided for the past six months.
Mrs. Lynch was preceded in death by her husband, Russell E. Lynch; and her parents, Herbert Knebel Savage and Elizabeth Moore Savage.
Mrs. Lynch is survived by a daughter, Jean L. Phillips and husband, Fred M. of Georgetown; two granddaughters, Michele P. Brady, and husband, John C., of Smyrna, and Meredith Phillips-Woodard and husband, Mark C., of Georgetown; four great-grandchildren, Collin M. Brady, Kayla E. Brady, Kinley E. Woodard and Coleman R. Woodard; a sister, Jane S. Gray of Northfield, N.J.; two cousins, Phyllis Ferguson and Betty Felton of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Lynch was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Georgetown, where she had been on the nightly prayer chain.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5, at 1:30 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church, 318 S. DuPont Hwy, Georgetown, with internment at St. Georges U. M. cemetery in Clarksville.

Adam Truett Bowen,
Navy veteran
Adam Truett Bowen, 28, entered into God’s eternal care Tuesday,Nov. 1, 2005.
Adam loved the outdoors, especially the ocean and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He will be greatly missed by his family.
He is survived by his fiancé Tosha Toney; her mother, Connie Toney; her brothers, Jacob and Zane Toney of New Oxford, Pa.; his parents, Hal and Elaine Bowen of Long Neck; his sisters, Rebecca Bowen of Bethesda, Md. and Shannon Bowen of West Palm Beach, Fla.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m., at the Freedom Valley Worship Center, 3185 York Rd., Gettysburg, Pa.

Cathleen Louise Kopacz,
former teacher
Cathleen Louise Kopacz, 49, of Broadkill Beach and formerly of Frederick, Md., passed away peacefully at home Monday, Oct. 31, 2005.
Cathleen was born April 8, 1956, in Daytona Beach, Fla., the daughter of Elizabeth Tomlinson Corson of Sun City Center, Fla. and the late Carl A. Corson. She was a teacher in the Frederick County Public Schools in Maryland where she taught for eight years. Cathleen graduated from Hood College in Frederick with degrees in both early childhood education and art. She worked and lived in Frederick for 33 years, moving to Broadkill Beach 10 years ago.
Cathleen was a member of Grace Church in Milton and Catoctin United Methodist Church in Thurmont, Md. and she had also attended Coolspring Presbyterian Church. She was very active in community service to the homeless in both Maryland and Delaware.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 11 years, Jan Kopacz; a stepdaughter, Susan Leonard-Morgan and husband, Peter, of Bowie, Md.; two stepgrandchildren, Matthew Leonard-Morgan and Sophie Leonard-Morgan; a goddaughter and niece, Anna Rutledge; two sisters, Marie Dean of Bloomington, Ill. and Nancy Roberson of Myersville, Md.; two brothers, Carl Corson of Maui Hi. and John Corson of Berkeley Springs, W.Va. nieces and nephews, Desanie Gregory, Laura Noffsinger, Heather Moffo, Brian Corson and Adam Corson.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, at Grace Church, 510 Union St., Milton, where friends may call after 1 p.m. Burial will be in Clarencetown, Long Island, Bahamas.

Alton J. Hudson,
retired poultry grower
Alton J. Hudson, 82, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at Harrison Senior Living, Georgetown.
Alton was born in Millsboro, the son of the late Ollie and Amelia Lowe Hudson., He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a poultry grower.
Alton was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Eloise Henry Hudson; a son, Alton Hudson II and his wife, Diana; two sisters, Josephine Morio and Virginia Adams and her husband, James; two brothers, Francis Hudson and his wife, Virginia; and Vernon Hudson and his wife, Madeline; two grandchildren, Jennifer Mathews and her husband, Paul, and Shannon Somers and her husband, Charles; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 6, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. market St., Georgetown, where friends may call after 1 p.m. Pastor Jeff Hudson will officiate.
Burial will be in Union cemetery , Georgetown.

Mabel Farring (O'Neal) Hitchens
School bus owner
Mabel Farring (O’Neal) Hitchens, age 98, of Bridgeville, DE died Tuesday, November 1, 2005, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, DE. Mrs. Hitchens was born July 31, 1907 in Cannon, DE daughter of the late Charles Elwood and Nellie Ann (Wootten) O’Neal.
Mrs. Hitchens owned and operated school buses in lower Delaware for 75 years starting in 1930. She was a past president and the oldest member of a 48 year membership with the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a former member of the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company’s Ladies Auxiliary. She was a former officer and a member of the Delaware State Grange; a member of Cannon Grange #65 where she held many offices through the years. and had worked as a cook at the Bridgeville School Cafeteria and at the Bridgeville Tastee Freeze where she was known as “Mighty Mabel.” She was also a member of Union United Methodist Church and was a loving and devoted Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Great-Great-Grandmother, and Mother-in-Law.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, H. Russell Hitchens, a daughter Dorothy Chaney, a grandson Russell Lee Chaney and two sisters, Mrytle O’Neal and Blanche Hastings. She is survived by two daughters, M. Louise Devone and her husband Jim of Seaford, DE and Carolyn Thomas and her husband John of Marydel, DE; ten grandchildren: Ronald Chaney & wife Betsy, Diana Chaney, Raymond Chaney & wife Jeanette, Mark Tyndall, Matt Thomas & wife Jean, Dawn Ivory & husband Dean, Andrew Thomas, Kimberly Tootell & husband Jared, Mark Thomas and Luke Thomas; nine great-grandchildren: Josh Chaney, Brooke Prouty, Caitlin Chaney, Damen Ivory, Summer Thomas, Hunter Thomas, Dunovan Ivory, Daphane Ivory and Dathan Ivory; one great-great-grandchild, Noah Chaney; two sisters, Lillie Elliott and Mae Carpenter, both of Seaford.
Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Hardesty Chapel, 202 Laws Street, Bridgeville, DE where the family will receive friends from 6-9 PM Friday, November 4, 2005. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 5, 2 PM at Union United Methodist Church, Laws & Market Streets, Bridgeville where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Rev. Gary Tulak and Rev. Al Taylor will be officiating. Interment will follow at Bridgeville cemetery.

Edward G. Bradley,
dental hygienist
Edward Gerard Bradley, 44, of Rehoboth Beach, died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005 at his residence. Mr. Bradley was born June 19, 1961 in Philadelphia, Pa. son of Edward Gerard and Patricia O’Hara Bradley of Rehoboth Beach.
Mr. Bradley had been employed as a dental hygienist in various locations. He was also currently involved in real estate investing.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Patricia Bradley of Georgetown, Michaele Bradley of Milford and Nanette McCloskey and her companion Wayne of Conshohocken, Pa.; one brother, David Bradley and his wife, Martha, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; and six nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Edmond’s Catholic Church, Rehoboth Beach, Thursday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. Friends may call one hour prior to Mass at the church. Interment will be private.
Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.

Gerald V, Emge Sr.,
retired accountant
Gerald V. Emge Sr., 94, of Rehoboth Beach, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005, at Brandywine Assisted Living in Rehoboth Beach.
Mr. Emge was born May 31, 1911 in Baltimore, Md., son of the late Frederick and Julia McRae Emge.
Mr. Emge retired from Black & Decker in the Towson, Md. area in 1974 where he had worked as a accountant. He was also a former member of the American Legion.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, in 2003; and his son, Gerald V. Emge Jr.
He is survived by his daughter, Donna Merrill, of Kiowa Island, S.C.; his son Kirk J. Emge of Falls Church, Va.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
An Entombment Service will be held Thursday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m., at the Mausoleum Chapel, Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens & Mausoleum, 200 East Padonia Road, Timonium, Md.; Deacon Ed Sullivan will officiate. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, 1151 Walker Road, Suite 202, Dover, DE 19901.

Eleanor R. Toner,
retired from Acme
Eleanor R. Toner, 78, of Lewes and formerly of Wilmington, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2005, at home.
Mrs. Toner was employed by the Acme Markets in the Wilmington area for 30 years until her retirement.
She attended Mary, Mother of Peace Catholic Church near Oak Orchard and was an avid NASCAR fan, especially of driver Jeff Gordon. She did volunteer work for many years for Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Toner, in 1990.
She is survived by three daughters, Frances Bender, Christine Mele and Carmella Muldoon; two brothers, Nick and Paul Novello; two sisters, Marian Marando and Josephine Crossan; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; caregivers of Beebe Home Health Care; friends at West Bay Park and friends Josey and Alecia.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Burial will be private.
Contributions are suggested to the Humane Society of Sussex County, 326 S. DuPont Highway, Georgetown DE 19947.

John Francis McDevitt,
retired accountant
John Francis McDevitt, 82, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away suddenly Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, at his residence.
Mr. McDevitt was born June 22, 1923 in South Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late John A. McDevitt and Frances Robinson McDevitt. He was a graduate of St. Anthony’s Grammar School and West Catholic High School.
He had been employed by Allied Chemical as an accountant for 38 years retiring in 1984.
He was an active member of St. Edmonds Catholic Church of Rehoboth Beach, where he was currently serving as secretary of the Finance Committee; as a Eucharistic minister; and as a fourth degree knight with the Knights of Columbus.
He was also a member of the Cape Henlopen Senior Center, Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540, VFW Post 7447 Rehoboth Beach, where he served in the Honor Guard and was a life member; and American Legion Post 28, Rehoboth Beach. He had proudly served his country in the US Army in the 106th Infantry Division during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the 106th Infantry Division Association.
Mr. McDevitt is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anne T. (Malley) McDevitt, with whom he had just celebrated their anniversary this week.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Chase Pinkham.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Kathryn A. Schlegel of Boothwyn, Pa.; three sons, John J. McDevitt of Catlett, Va., Daniel F. McDevitt of Avondale, Pa., and Kevin M. McDevitt of Petersburg, Va.; a sister, Eleanor McDevitt of Rehoboth Beach; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren .
Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Edmonds Catholic Church, Rehoboth Beach. Burial with military honors followed the mass at the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery in Millsboro.
