Vera McCroan Hill, 82, of Port St. Joe, Fla., passed away July 2, 2005 at her residence.

She was born one of 13 children, to Richard Daniel and Margaret Ada Davis, in Jackson County, March 15, 1923. She was a resident of Bay County for over 50 years. For the past five years she was a resident of Gulf County.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 8, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home, with Elder Bob Pelc and the Rev. Thomas McCroan officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, July 7, from 6- 8 p.m.

Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Panama City is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Jane Raines, 94, of Marianna died Monday, July 4, 2005 at her residence. She was a native of Houston County, Alabama and lived most of her life in Jackson County. Ms. Raines was a homemaker and a longtime member of Holly Grove Free Will Baptist Church and in most recent years, a member of New Salem Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Raines in 1997.

Survivors include two sons, Danny Raines, Robert Raines and wife, Marie; four daughters, Vera Mae Rehberg and husband, Shirley, Jenell Melvin and husband, Ronald; Katherine Wright all of Marianna, Christine Tice and husband James of Cottondale. 13 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Thursday at James & Sikes Maddox Chapel with Rev. Glynn Dunham officiating. Burial will follow in Bright Prospect Cemetery near Marianna with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, from 6-8 at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel.

James O'Neal Whitaker, 64, of Bonifay died Monday, July 4, 2005, at his residence.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Whitaker of Bonifay; parents, Cecil and Willie Mae Whitaker of Bonifay; daughters, Tonna Hasty and Theresa Register, both of Slocomb, Ala.; son, Ray V. Corbin of Marianna; brothers, Lee Roy and wife Lorine Whitaker of Panama City and Richard and wife Dian Whitaker of Bonifay; sisters, Sarah Paulk and husband Rayburn of Bonifay, Carol Yarbrough of Coffee Springs, Ala., Linda Yarbrough of Geneva,Ala. and Martha Myers and husband Kerry of Val Rico; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held today, July 7, at 7 p.m., at Sims Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Phil Baxley officiating.

Visitation will at 6 p.m., today, at Sims Funeral Home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Teen Challenge of Florida or the Red Hill Methodist Church.

Sims Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Carmelita Brooks, 89, of Two Egg, passed away Monday, July 11, 2005 at her residence.

She was a life long resident of this area and was a member of the Lovedale Baptist Church. she loved to fish and work in her garden.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Brooks, in 1991.

Survivors include her sons, Jimmy Brooks and wife Ruth of Cottondale and Michael Brooks of Fort Lauderdale; daughters, Annette Morris and husband Earp of Bainbridge, Ga., Anne Thornton and husband Richard of Glendale, Ariz., Myrna Willibrant of Washington , Kan., Melba Goldschlager and husband Jerry of Fanning Springs and Georgia Mayfield and husband Earl of Tarpon Springs; sisters, Martha Wade of Daytona and Betty Chambers of Lake Mary; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be held Thursday, July 14, at 2 p.m., in the Lovedale Baptist Church, with Pastor Randall Jarnigan officiating. Burial will follow in the Lovedale Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, July 13, from 6-8 p.m., in Marianna Chapel Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Covenant Hospice or the Lovedale Baptist Church Building Fund.

Marianna Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Larry H. Ellis, 58, of Malone, died Monday, July 11, 2005, in Malone.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by James and Sikes Funeral home Maddox Chapel.

Mary C. Oliver, 88, of Marianna, died suddenly and unexpectedly at home, Friday, July 8, 2005.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., today, July 12, at Maddox Chapel. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, with James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

Hattie Mae Stephens Thornton of Marianna passed away Saturday, July 9, 2005, at Chipola Nursing Pavillion following an extended illness.

She was a lifetime resident of Jackson County. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Marvin Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. She owned and operated Stephens Service Station and Grocery for 35 years. She also worked for the State of Florida Sunland Center in the food service department.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, Jesse A. Stephens and her son Robert "Eddie" Stephens.

Survivors include her husband Thomas Richard Thornton of Marianna; son, Henry Stephens and wife Sylvia of Marianna; daughters, Jernearl Bulzer and husband Johnny of Marianna and Rena Margaret Baggett and husband Alan of Marianna; step-daughters, Shelia Hanlon and husband Ronnie of Wewahitchka and Sherry Lynn Dozier of Marianna; brother, James Carter of Marianna; and sister, Jennie V. Sims of Marianna. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Thursday, July 14, at 11 a.m., at Marvin Freewill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Ronnie Wright and Ed Hutchinson officiating.

Interment will follow at the Marvin Chapel Cemetery. Her immediate family will be serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends today, July 13, at Lord Funeral Home Chapel, from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m.

The body will lie one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Hospice and/ or Youth Fund and Ladies WNAC of Marvin Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.

Larry H. Ellis, 58, of Malone died Monday, July 11, 2005 in Malone.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, a truck driver and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Canman Ellis of Malone; his children, Michael Ellis and wife Dana of Marianna; Angela Peters and husband Dennis of Dothan; his sister, Brenda Canman and granddaughter Sierra Ellis.

Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday, July 14, at 9 a.m., at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Jack Howell officiating. James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel will direct. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., today, July 13, at Maddox Chapel.

James D. Heisler (Colonel, Ret.), 64, of Dothan, Ala., died Tuesday morning, July 12, 2005.

He was born July 7, 1941, in Houston County, Ala., and lived in Dothan most of his life. He was a veteran of the United States Army, where he served for 30 years prior to his retirement in 1993. He was a 1963 graduate of the University of Alabama where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. He was employed as Recreation Director and also served as City Manager in Marianna.

In 1971, he returned to Dothan and was employed with Equitable Insurance Company (now Axa Insurance Company) for the past 34 years. He served as a district manager and was also inducted to the Hall of Fame with Equitable Insurance. He was a past member of Dothan Houston County Rotary Club and was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church, where he served as a board member.

Survivors include his sons, Brett Heisler and Jay Heisler, both of Dothan; daughter, Erika Heisler of Birmingham, Ala.; grandchildren, Lindsey Heisler, Garrett Heisler and Riley Crawford; brother, Terry Heisler of Dothan; and two cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 15, at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Kyle Gatlin officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery, with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m., Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alabama Organ Center, 500 22nd Street South, Birmingham, Ala., 35233, Atten: Kendelea Smith.

Billy R. Swearingin, 67, of Alford, Fla., died Monday, July 11, 2005 at Jackson Hospital in Marianna.

He was a native of Round Lake, a diesel mechanic and attended Alford Assembly of God Church.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Swearingin of Alford; his children, James Ray Swearingin and wife Brandy, John Edward Swearingin and wife Contessa, Sharon Ruth Nault all of Kodiak, Alaska, Barbara Dawn Potter of Whitethorne, Calif.; his sisters, Joyce Carter of Alford and Judy Dingler of Carrabelle; 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 15, at Alford Assembly of God, with the Rev. Mildred Barfield officiating. Burial will follow in Alford City Cemetery with James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel of Marianna directing.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Thursday at James and Sikes Maddox Chapel.

Annie Marie Morgan, 79, of Marianna, Fla., departed from this life to be with the Lord Monday, July 11, 2005, at her home.

She was a native of Waco, Texas , but lived most of her life in Marianna. She was a member of the Tabernacle Church of Christ Written in Heaven, and was employed by the Jackson County School Board as a paraprofessional.

Survivors include her loyal husband of 60 years, Walter Morgan Sr. of Marianna; sons, Isaiah Morgan and wife Joanne, Walter Morgan Jr. and wife Karen, Paul Morgan and wife Carolyn, Zachariah Morgan and wife Lena, and Nehemiah Morgan and wife Sylvia,all of Marianna, Elijah Morgan and wife Luvernia and Joseph Morgan and wife Jean, all of Tallahassee, Nepton Morgan of New Orleans, La., Hezekiah Morgan and wife Carrie of Jonesboro, Ga., Henry John Morgan and wife Wendy of Stafford, Va., Samuel Morgan and wife Linda of Lanham, Md., Randolph Morgan and wife Cherry of Sunderland, Md; daughters, Betty McMillan-Robbins and husband Percell of Marianna, Marie Green of Bonifay, Daisy Hadley and husband Frank and Geraldine Capehart, all of Temple Hills, Md., Nadine Morgan-Jackson and husband Leander of La Plata, Md., and Patricia Morgan-Walters and husband Daniel of Upper Marlboro, Md.

She is also survived by her brothers, Clarence H. Bush and wife Vandelyn of Waco, Texas , N.J. Bush and wife Elizabeth of Elm Mott, Texas and Archie Bush and wife Merilyn of Gardenia, Calif.; 41 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren; six sisters-in-law, two aunts and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Services will be held Saturday, July 16, at 2 p.m., at Second West Missionary Baptist Association Church, with Elder Elijah Morgan, Evangelist Isaiah Morgan, Assistant Diocese Bishop Nathaniel Pollock and Elder Tracy Baker officiating.

Interment will follow in Baxter-Morgan Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends Friday, July 15, from 6- 7 p.m., at Tabernacle Church of Christ Written in Heaven, located at 2079 Unity Road in Marianna.

The body will lie at the church from 1 p.m. until time of the service at 2 p.m.

Vann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
