MARILYN FUNDERBURK
Mrs. Marilyn B. Funderburk, 47, of White City, Fla., died Monday, June 26, 2000, at her home. Born in Quincy, Fla., she was a lifelong resident of this area. She was a schoolteacher for Port St. Joe Elementary and a member of Grace Baptist Church. Her father, Park Bentley and a brother, Gary Bentley precede her in death. Mrs. Funderburk is survived by her mother, Nettie Bentley of Sycamore, Fla.; her husband, Robert "Bob" Funderburk Jr. of White City; one son, Robert Russell Funerburk and wife Brandy of Franklin, N.C.; one daughter, Robbie Denise Funderburk of White City; two brothers, Lane Bentley and wife Janet of Bristol, Ronnie Bentley of Sycamore, Fla.; one grandchild, Alan Jacob Funderburk. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, June 30 at 9:30 a.m. EDT in Sycamore Methodist Church in Gadsden County, Fla. with Pastor Lee Cordell officiating. Interment will follow in Sycamore Methodist Church Cemetery. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Tommy Pitts, Rick Lamberson, James Craig, Craig Seay, Scott Lamberson and Tommy Davidson. Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of Grace Baptist Church. The famil will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. EDT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Northwest Florida, the Gideon's International or American Cancer Society in memory of Mrs. Funderburk.

MILDRED RACHEL HUGHES
Mildred Rachel Hughes, 79, of Panama City Beach, died on Monday, June 26, 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband John Hughes. She is survived by her sons, Rick Hughes and wife Pattie of Panama City Beach, John Hughes Jr. and wife Glenda of Birmingham, Ala., and David Vest of Panama City Beach. She had seven grandchildren: Christa, Natalie, Rikki, Mike, Cindy, Gregg and Jeff; and six great-grandchilren. She is also survived by two sisters, Rene Bowlen of Ohio and Jenny Morrow of Birmingham, Ala.; and a brother, Edgar Vest of Birmingham, Ala. Graveside funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, June 29, at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Memorial Gardens. The family will recieve friends at the funeral home this evening, from 5 to 8 p.m.

NELLIS F. JOHNSON
Mr. Nellis F. Johnson, age 80, of 111 N. Cove Blvd., Panama City, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at his home. Johnson was a native of Avery County, N.C., and a resident of Panama City since 1957. He was employed by The News Herald for 15 years as a news editor and cartoonist. He created the popular feature, "Panhandle Parade" for The News Herald. He was also the creator of the syndicated comic strip "Corn Flakes" which appeared in several hundred newspapers coast to coast. He was a member of Central Baptist Church, served on the board of Panama City Rescue Mission, the American Cancer Society and was a member of Bay County Historical Society. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Reba G. Johnson; two sons, Wayne Johnson and wife Irene, Randy Johnson and wife Thanom; two daughters, Janet Johnson and Brenda Johnson; four grandchildren, Paul Johnson and wife Mecheal, Jeff Johnson, Theresa Campbell and husband Robbie, Rita Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Laura Johnson and Madison Ward, all of Panama City. Funeral services will be conducted today, June 28, at 10 a.m. in Southerland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Barton officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

FRANCES LENORA KEITH
Frances Lenora Keith, 63, of Crawfordville, Fla., died on Sunday, June 25, 2000, at her home. A native of Apalachicola, Ms. Keith had lived in Crawfordville for the past two years, moving there from Tallahassee. She was a retired Environmental Specialist with The State of Florida Department of Environment Protection. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution Protection. She was a member of North Florida Geneology Society, a life member of Georgia Salsburger, and was Episcopalian by faith. She is survived by her son, Geroge Keith Thompson of Crawfordville; two daughters, Margie Quillman and Patricia Keith-Minasian, both of Tallahassee; her mother, Mrs. Margie Marshall Keith of Lynn Haven; one sister, Annelle Keith Blanchett of Tallahassee; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today, June 28, at 10:30 a.m. EDT at The Trinity Episcopal Church in Apalachicola. Interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery in Apalachicola.

CLAUDIO 'JUNIOR' MONSERRATE JR.
Mr. Claudio "Junior" Monserrate Jr., age 30, of Youngstown, Fla., died Sunday, June 25, 2000. Born in Puerto Rico, he moved to Florida in 1971. A brother, Jorge Luis Torres, precedes him in death. Mr. Monserrate is survived by his mother and father, Claudio and Elisa of Monserrate of Leisure City, Fla.; wife, Beth Monserrate of Youngstown; one brother, Pedro J. Torres of Leisure Lake; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Whitey and Laura Grant of Youngstown. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, June 29, at 2 p.m., in Southerland Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Lynn Haven Cemetery. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Raymond Dean, Kenny Grant, Dave Martin, Mike Coyne, Whitey Grant and Chris Rubba. PEGGY JONES
Mrs. Peggy Jones, age 58, of 4001 E. Eighth St., Panama City, Fla., died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at Phoebe-Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Ga. She had been a resident of the area since 1977, coming here from Albany, Ga. Mrs. Jones was the assistant food service manager for Haney Vo Tech. She was Baptist by faith and enjoyed cooking. Mrs. Jones is survived by her husband, James R. Jones of Panama City; two sons, James R. Jones Jr. of Newport News, Va., and John Mark Jones of Savannah, Ga.; a brother, C.B. Powell of Livingston, Ala.; sisters, Fenella Thomas of Mobile, Johnnie May Stewart of Hamilton, Miss., Inez Radcliffe of York, Ala., and Fay Ledden of Ward, Ala.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Katie Lou Duke. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, June 28, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Key officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are Lee Thomas, Mike Thomas, Scott Powell, "Mac" Jones, Steve Bell and Matthew Cannon.

HERBERT PATTON SAPP
Mr. Herbert Patton Sapp, born Feb. 28, 1910, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, in a Crystal River, Fla., hospital, at the age of 90. Mr. Sapp accompanied his parents, Joshua Mercer Sapp and Ella Mae Patton Sapp to Panama City in September of 1912. Panama City was home to Mr. Sapp for many years. He graduated from Bay High School in 1927. After graduating from the University of Florida School of Law, he was active in the private practice of law in the local area. One of his more famous cases occurred when he served as defense attorney for the man accused of killing a local hardware store owner, Mr. Van Kleek. He also served as a member and chairman of the local school board, school board attorney for both Bay and Walton counties, and as attorney for Bay County. He served as a gunnery captain in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Mr. Sapp was an active member of First United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school, both in the adult and youth departments and served both as a member and chairman of the Board of Stewards. Mr. Sapp branched into the marina business where he developed, owned and operated Treasure Island Marina on Thomas Drive. For the last 25 years, Mr. Sapp has resided in Fort Lauderdale, Okeechobee and more recently in Gulf Hammock, Fla. He is survived by his wife, O'dell Sapp of Gulf Hammock, Fla.; two children, Herbert P. Sapp Jr. and Dr. Miriam Sapp Bozarth, both of Panama City; three stepchildren, Bill Forester and Pat Pritchard, both of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Carol Soderquist of Vero Beach; six grandchildren, Teresa Kennedy of Katy, Texas, James M. Sapp Jr., Allison Sapp, Troy Sapp and J.P. Bozarth, all of Panama City, Kimberly Smith of St. Louis, Mo.; several stepgrandchildren; his brother, William Howard Sapp of Panama City. A son, James Mercer Sapp, precedes Mr. Sapp in death. Graveside funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, June 29, at 10 a.m. in Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Si Mathison officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Patronis, Johnny Patronis, Tommy Smith, and John Christo Jr. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

A memorial service for Mr. Richard B. Tandy, 85, of 6603 South Lagoon Drive, Panama City Beach, Fla., who died Saturday morning, June 24, 2000, will be held Thursday, June 29, at 3 p.m. at Woodlawn United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ron Ball officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Woodland United Methodist Building Fund.

Mrs. Alice Ruth Weiss, age 72, of 1619 Missouri Ave., Lynn Haven, Fla., died Monday, June 26, 2000, at a local hospital. She had been a resident of the area for 35 years, coming here from Pensacola, Fla. Mrs. Weiss was a past president and past district president of the Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W. Post No. 2185 of Panama City, a member of the Fleet Reserve Association of Panama City, and Protestant by faith. She is survived by her husband, John C. "Jack" Weiss of Lynn Haven; sisters: Daisy Morris of Falcon, N.C., Mary Jo Adams of Decatur, Ga., and Harriette Brooks of Harrisburg, N.C.; brothers, Thomas Jones of Lithia Springs, Ga., and John Jones of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; and one grandson, Matthew E. Andrews of Panama City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 29, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clay Long officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, June 28, 2000, from 6 to 8 p.m.

ALBERT VICTOR BATSON
Albert Victor 'A.V.' Batson passed away June 25, 2000, at the age of 72. He was born Aug. 12, 1927, in Lockhart, Ala. Mr. Batson was preceded in death by his wife, Mary. He is survived by two daughters, Lydia and husband Mike of Panama City Beach, Fla., and Barbara and husband Tim of Ponce De Leon, Fla.; four sons: Willie and wife Brenda of Fort Walton, Fla., Eugene and wife Kim of Navarre, Clay of Florala, Ala., and Jerry of Fountain, Fla.; two sisters, Essie Allen of Rocky Bayou, Fla., and Margarene Tedder of Andalusia, Ala.; 26 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. We love you Daddy and we will miss you, but we know that you are with Mama now in heaven. The family will receive friends at the Wyatt Funeral Home today, June 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 30, at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Opp, Ala.
