THOMAS JEFFERSON HARRIS
Mr. Thomas J. Harris, age 77, of 710 Kirklin Ave., died Friday, July 28, 2000, at his home. Thomas Jefferson Harris was born on Feb. 11, 1923, in Apalachicola, Fla. He moved to Panama City in January 1956 where he met and married Myrtle Carroll. Together, they have shared 43 years of loving devotion that was an example of a truly committed loving relationship. He was a faithful, dedicated and active member of New Bethel Baptist Church for over 25 years, where he serviced as deason, trustee member and on various church committees. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army World War II. Leaving to mourn his passing, his lovely and devoted wife, Myrtle; five sons, Jimi Evins of Oakland, Calif., Thomas Jefferson Harris Jr. and his wife Patricia of St. Lucie, Fla., Oscar Will Harris of Panama City, Willie Harris of Miami, Fla., and Spencer Harris of Panama City; seven daughters, Charlene Johnson and her husband Levi of Milwaukee, Wis., Myrtle McDonald and her husband Raymond of Dayton, Ohio, Ann Harris of Panama City, Janice Harris-Robinson and her husband Ronald (Capt.) of Warner Robins Air Force Base, Ga., Vanessa Harris of Panama City, Marilyn Smiley and her husband Matthew (first sgt.) of Hinesville, Ga., Charlotte Harris and her significant other Gerry; 24 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Thelma McCathern and her husband Ewing of Panama City, Josephine Harris of Panama City, Rosa Lee Langston and her husband Albert of Panama City, Olivia Youngs of Rivers Beach, Fla; four sister-in-laws, Sarah Harris of Rochester, N.Y., Leslie Harris of Panama City, Irene Fuller of Santiago, Calif., Maggie Powell of Columbus, Ohio; and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mr. Harris will be held Friday, Aug. 4 at 2 p.m. in New Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. James Bush, officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Public visitation will begin this afternoon from 1 to 8 p.m. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church. The family will receive friends at 710 Kirklin Ave.

PAULINE G. NELL
Ms. Pauline G. Nell, age 95, of 1028 W. 12th Court, Panama City, Fla., died Sunday, July 31, 2000, at her home. She had been a resident of the area since 1960 and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Panama City, Fla. Ms. Nell enjoyed crocheting and singing with the "39ers" from First Baptist Church. She especially liked singing for nursing homes. Ms. Nell is survived by her daughter, Vena Nell Crowson and her husband Noel of Fountain, Fla.; a sister, Marion Duran of Uriah, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Raley officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, from 5 until 7 p.m.

Audrey Jones Pittman, 87, of Panama City, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at Bay Medical Center after an extended illness. Funeral services for Mrs. Pittman will be held today, Aug. 3, at St. John Missionary Baptist Church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Rory Bedford, officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church. The family will receive friends at 1605 Arkansas Ave.

KIMBERLY DIANE POWELL
Kimberly Diane Powell, 32, of Panama City, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000. She is survived by her fiancee, James Johnstone of Panama City; her stepmother, Rhonda Powell; one sister, Tammy (Jeffrey) Johnstone; a brother, Chris (Karen) Powell, and niece, Jessica, all of Wetumpka, Ala. A memorial service will be held today, Aug. 3, at North Bay Creek Indian Chapel, Hwy. 2321, at 6 p.m. All friends are welcome. Burial will be private, at a later date.

WILLIAM HENRY RICE, JR.
Mr. William Henry Rice, Jr., age 70, of 112 S. Gray Ave., Panama City, Fla., died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000 at a local nursing facility. He was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of Springfield United Methodist Church. Mr. Rice served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Rice is survived by his stepson, John Gray and his wife Linda of Callaway, Fla.; stepdaughter, Glenda Singleton and her husband Curtis of Southport, Fla.; grandchildren, Deborah Glass, Deryle Hopkins, Darrin Hopkins, Kim Black, Terri Burkett, Johnny Gray and Angela Shick; three sisters, Betty Ann Rice, Margaret Snow, and Nora Lodato; and two brothers, Jimmy Rice and Larry Rice. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Rice; and a stepson, Henry Gray. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Nixon Miller and the Rev. Darwin Glass officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are Darell Melvin, Harold Barfield, Bill Gainey, Roger Benton, Edwin Glass and Deryle Hopkins. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, from 6 until 8 p.m.

WILLIAM HOWARD SAPP SR.
William Howard Sapp Sr., 88, of 1409 Deer Ave., died Wednesday morning in his home. He had been a resident here since 1912 moving here from Chipley. He was the son of the late Judge J.M. and Ella Patton Sapp. He practiced law with the Law Firm of J.M. and H.P. Sapp He graduated from the University of Florida with a Juris Doctorate Degree. He was a city judge and small claim judge. Mr. Sapp served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He served on the vestry and was a senior warden of St. Andrew Episcopal Church He was a past president of the Lions Club, was a patron of the Kaleidoscope Theatre, was a Patron of the Episcopal Day School. Over the years, Mr. Sapp has developed the reputation as a local historian and story teller. He leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Gene Howell Sapp of Panama City; five children: Elinor Sapp of Darien Conn., Helen Sapp Stolfa and her husband, Thomas A. of Kingston, Ontario, Willlam H. (Bill) Sapp Jr. of Roanoke Va., Louise Sapp Crawford and her husband, Timothy H. of Zachary La., Gene Sapp Elliott and her husband, Jim of Tallahassee; 12 grandchildren, Christopher Stolfa. Joanna Stolfa, Katherine Stolfa, Ericka Stolfa, Elaine Sapp, Stephanie Sapp, Carl Sapp, Eric Sapp, Mark Crawford, Stephen Crawford, Rebekah Elliott, Padraic Elliott. He was preceded in death by his brother, Herbert P. Sapp. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Andrew Episcopal Church with the Rev. Tom Weller and the Rev. John Wave officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Those desiring to may make a donation to St. Andrew Episcopal Church or your favorite charity in memory of Howard Sapp.

JESSE DEWEY (J.D.) FLEMING
Mr. J. D. Fleming, age 88, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Fleming was a resident of Hiland Park, Panama City, from 1952-1997 (45 years). He was a charter member of Hiland Park Methodist Church. For the past 3 1/2 years he was a member of Chumuckla United Methodist Church in Jay, Fla. He and his brother, Max, owned and operated Fleming Brothers Machine Works on 15th Street for many years. Mr. Fleming had resided for 3 1/2 years in Santa Rosa County with his daughter. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Beulah Rainey Fleming. Also surviving are two sons and two daughters: Bill and his wife Betty of Port St. Joe; Dewey and his wife Jo of Dalton, Ga.; Jadine Ellis and her husband Cliff of Mount Olive, Miss.; and Donna Lee and her husband Bobby of Jay, Fla.. He was "Papa" to eleven grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a very special brother, Max Fleming of Panama City; four sisters: Pearline Tomisini of Fresno, Calif., Laurice Watts of Brinson, Ga., Mable Corbett of Atlanta, Ga., and Majean Browning of Blairsville, Ga. He is also survived by a host of special nieces and nephews and friends. Mr. Fleming is preceded in death by his parents, George and Maude Fleming; one brother, Glenn; and two sisters, Beulah Taylor and Jewel Benson. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today, Aug. 4, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Danny Powell of Cleveland, Miss., assisted by the Rev. Harry Johnson of Wewahitchka, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery on Highway 231 in Panama City. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are grandson: Earl Ellis, Jay Fleming, Tim Fleming, John Johnson, Thames Gandy, and Teedy Nobles. Honorary pallbearers will include grandsons and granddaughters.

Mother Clara May (Faison) Freeman, 97, of 618 E. 7th Court died Sunday, July 30, 2000, in her home. She was a native of Wewahitchka, Fla., and a resident of Panama City since 1957. She was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church until her health failed. She is survived by her two sons, Lonnie Charles Freeman of Panama City, and Donald Freeman (Joyce) of Marianna; six daughters: Pearly Mae Harris of Port St. Joe, Victoria Freeman, Ruby Freeman and Lucille Humphrey all of Panama City, Johnnie N. Hines (Duke) of St. John Island, S.C., and Mary Ann Dixon (George) of Mobile, Ala; sister, Lottie Freeman of Jacksonville; two sisters-in-law, Classie Faison of Panama City, and Ossie Freeman of Bayside, N.Y.; a former daughter-in-law, Lillian Russ; 48 grandchildren; 79 great-grandchildren; l6 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mother Freeman will be held Saturday, Aug. 5, at l p.m. in Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist church in Panama City with the Rev. Arthur Ivey officiating. Interment to follow in the Williamsburg Cemetery in Wewahitchka, Fla. The remains will lie in state at the Church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time. The family will receive relatives and friends at 618 E.7th Court.

Mrs. Lola Haynes, age 88, of Vernon, died July 29, 2000, in Clinton, Md. She was a native of Vernon and of the Methodist faith. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at New Bethel A.M.E. Church in Vernon, with the Rev. Vivian Green and the Rev. Youngblood Potter, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in St. Luke Memorial Garden of Vernon with Cooper Funeral Home, directing. Survivors include four sons: Wade of Potomac, Md., Robert of Asbury Park, N.J., Joseph of Freehold, N.J., William F. Jr. of Dover, N.J.; four daughters: Ellen Goode of Tinton Falls, N.J., Ida Wright of Freehold, N.J., Mary Jackson of New Brunswick, N.J., and Pequoia Evans of Clinton, Md.; two brothers, Carlie B. Pompey (Lillie Mae) of Vernon and Samuel Pompey of Panama City; two sisters, Sallie Godbolt of Long Branch, N.J., and Nellie Green of Vernon. The remains will lie in state at the church two hours prior to service.

WILLIE MAE MITCHELL
Mrs. Willie Mae Mitchell, age 38, of Tuscon, Ariz., died Monday, July 31, 2000, in Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was a native of Bainbridge, Ga. She dedicated her life to the Lord and served him until the end. Mae was considered by her family to be a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Mae served faithfully at the New Beginning Assembly of the Saints Church as a Praise and Worship team, Choir, and Finance Committee member until she moved to Tuscon, Ariz. She continued her service in Tuscon, Ariz., as a member of Siloam Freewill Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. She served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, Praise and Worship team and Choir member. Mae leaves to cherish her memories her devoted and loyal husband, Nathaniel Lamar Mitchell Sr. and her two sons, Earnest L. (Latrice) Jones Jr. and John O. Jones; three stepchildren: Nathaniel (Keisha) Mitchell Jr. of Tampa, Steven Mitchell of Clearwater, and Nathasha Mitchell of Panama City; a loving mother and stepfather, John (Thelma) Jones of Panama City; a devoted mother-in-law, Bessie M. Mitchell of Panama City; three brothers: Sam (Denise) Brown of Bainbridge, Ga., Kenneth Brown and Eugene Brown of Panama City; four sisters: Carolyn (Thomas) Brown of Fort Myers, Sandra Brown of Bainbridge, Earnestine Ford of Panama City, Dequita (Lee) Whitted of Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren, JyTavius Snipe-Jones and QuinTon Kerns; a host of brother and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Mitchell will be held Saturday, Aug. 5, at 11 a.m. in New Beginning Assembly of the Saints, 662 Cone Ave., with Bishop Lonnie Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in Redwood Cemetery. Public visitation will begin this afternoon at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church. The family will receive friends at 1027 Church Ave.
