Ms. Pauline G. Nell, age 95, of 1028 W. 12th Ct., Panama City, Fla., died Sunday, July 31, 2000, at her home. She had been a resident of the area since 1960 and was a member of First Baptist Church of Panama City. Ms. Nell enjoyed crocheting and singing with the "39ers" from First Baptist Church. She especially liked singing for nursing homes. Ms. Nell is survived by her daughter, Vena Nell Crowson and her husband Noel of Fountain; a sister, Marion Duran of Uriah, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Ellison officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are: Charles Mabius, Bill Allison, Bobby Conner, Andrew Johnson, Milton Buckley, Darryl Huether, Bill Gilbert, and Ed Grant. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, Aug. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m.

WILLIAM HENRY RICE, JR.
Mr. William Henry Rice, Jr., age 70, of 112 S. Gray Ave., Panama City, Fla., died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at a local nursing facility. He was a life long resident of the area and a member of Springfield United Methodist Church. Mr. Rice served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Rice is survived by his step-son, John Gray and his wife Linda of Callaway; step-daughter: Glenda Singleton and her husband Curtis of Southport; grandchildren: Deborah Glass, Deryle Hopkins, Darrin Hopkins, Kim Black, Terri Burkett, Johnny Gray, and Angela Shick; two sisters, Betty Ann Elliot, and Nora Holder; and a brother, Jimmy Rice. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Rice and a step-son, Henry Gray. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Nixon Miller and the Rev. Darwin Glass officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are: Darell Melvin, Harold Barfield, Bill Gainey, Roger Benton, Edwin Glass, and Deryle Hopkins. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, Aug. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m.

DELLA BARNHART SHIREY
Mrs. Della Barnhart Shirey, age 86, of Panama City, Fla., died Tuesday evening, Aug. 1, 2000, at her home. Born in DeFuniak Springs, Fla., she was a lifelong resident of this area. Mrs. Shirey is survived by her husband, Hayward L. Shirey of Panama City; one son, Randall Barnhart and wife Rose of Panama City; one grandson, William Barnhart and wife Faye of Lynn Haven; one granddaughter, Marie Holden and husband Ben of Vernon; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, J.W. Sellars and wife Corene of Panama City and Millard Sellars and wife Evelyn of Chipley; one sister, Mrs. Dewitt Lowery of Panama City. Funeral services will be conducted this morning at 10 a.m. in Southerland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R.C. Warren officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as active pallbearers: William Barnhart, Josh Barnhart, Charles Shirey, Ellis Fowhand, David Smith, Kevin Sowell, and Cliff Hendrix. The family wishes to thank Hospice of NorthWest Florida and its staff for their caring attention for Mrs. Shirey during her illness.

ROBERT 'BUCK' DAVIS
Mr. Robert "Buck" Davis, age 78, of Port St. Joe, passed away Friday, Aug. 8, 2000, at his home. A native of Taylor County, he had been a resident here since 1950 and was retired from the power department of St. Joe Paper Company. Survivors include his wife, Katie Davis of Port St. Joe; his sons: Howard Davis of Bristol, Buddy Davis of Dunnellon, and Tommy Davis of Port St. Joe; his daughters, Nan Silcox of Newberry and Patty Tieful of Orange Park; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Barney Mathis of Perry and Willie Mathis of Blountstown; and three sisters: Frances Waters of Lake Butler, Mattie Lou Anderson of Cross City, and Josephine Mathis of Jacksonville. At his request there will be no public visitation. A private funeral service will be held.

CLARA MAY (FAISON) FREEMAN
Mother Clara May (Faison) Freeman, 97, of 618 E. 7th Court, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, in her home. She was a native of Wewahitchka, Fla., and a resident of Panama City since 1957. Funeral services for Mother Freeman will be held today, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. in Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist church in Panama City with the Rev. Arthur Ivey officiating. Interment to follow in the Williamsburg Cemetery in Wewahitchka, Fla. The remains will lie in state at the church today from 10 a.m. until service time. The family will receive relatives and friends at 618 E.7th Court.

RAYMOND CHARLES GROOM
Mr. Raymond Charles Groom, age 62, of Picayune, Miss., formerly of Panama City, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, as the result of a tractor accident in Carriere, Miss. Raymond was born in Waukunah, Fla., but was raised in Panama City. He was the owner/operator of S.W. Anderson, Inc., a deep sea fishing business in Panama City before moving to Picayune in 1989. He was in real estate for the past eight years and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Panama City. His parents, Roy Houston Groom Sr. and Ethel Smith Groom, and a daughter, Judith Anderson Groom, precede him in death. Raymond is survived by his wife, Judy Anderson Groom of Picayune, Miss.; three daughters: Sondra G. Jordan of Panama City, Elizabeth Lois Toole of Thomasville, Ga., and Anna Rachel Megan Groom of Picayune; six sons: Raymond C. Groom II, Michael Houston Groom, George Hayden Helms III, Thomas Scott Helms, all of Panama City, Stephen Walter Helms of Andalusia, Ala., and Charles Christian Blue Groom of Picayune; two brothers, Roy Groom and Ronnie Groom, both of Panama City; and ten grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be conducted on Monday, Aug. 7, at 3 p.m. with Mr. Steve Southerland Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Diabetes Association in memory of Mr. Groom.

Mrs. Lola Haynes, age 88, of Vernon, died July 29, 2000, in Clinton, Md. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today, Aug. 5, at New Bethel A.M.E. Church in Vernon, with the Rev. Vivian Green and the Rev. Youngblood Potter, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in St. Luke Memorial Garden of Vernon with Cooper Funeral Home, directing. The remains will lie in state at the church two hours prior to service.

Sallie Mae Tabb Hughes, 88, of 3009 N. Altha Ave., Panama City, died Friday, August 4, 2000 in a local nursing home. She had been a resident of Panama City since 1929, moving here from Georgia. She was a charter member of Hiland Park Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Hughes. She is survived by two daughters, Thelma Dorman and her husband Billy Joe of Lynn Haven, Sue Hudson and her husband Rusty of Panama City; three sons: John T. Hughes Jr. and wife Jean of Panama City, LaVaughn Hughes and wife Joan of Tampa, Christin R. Hughes and wife Sylvia of Jacksonville; sister, Nora Hughes of Panama City; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandsons; and a step great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Strickland and the Rev. Don Pickernill officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Mrs. Willie Mae Mitchell, age 38, of Tuscon, Ariz., died Monday, July 31, 2000, in Gulf Coast Medical Center. Funeral services for Mrs. Mitchell will be held today, Aug. 5, at 11 a.m. in New Beginning Assembly of the Saints, 662 Cone Ave., with Bishop Lonnie Mitchell officiating. Funeral services for William Howard Sapp Sr., 88, of 1409 Deer Ave., Panama City, who died Wednesday, July 2, 2000, in his home, will be held today, Aug. 5, at 11 a.m. in the St. Andrew Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Tom Weller and the Rev. John Wave officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
