Mr. Porter R. Merrill of 3038 Carter Circle, Chipley, Fla., died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at his residence. Born in Lynn, Mass., he moved here from Miami in 1983. He was a reservation manager for Pan Am Airline and a member of the Presbyterian Church of Sunny Hills where he was the clerk of sessions, served as an elder and was a member of the choir. Mr. Merrill was the son of Volentine R. and Doris Merrill. Memorial services for Mr. Merrill will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers to Emerald Coast Hospice of Bay County, 700 West 23rd St., Panama City, Fla. 32405, in memory of Mr. Merrill.

Ms. Marianne L. Poole, 38, of 383 Wahoo Road, Panama City Beach, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 8, 2000, in a local hospital. She had been a resident of this area since 1975, moving here from Indianapolis, Ind. Ms. Poole attended the Messiah Lutheran Church. She is preceded in death by her father, Lt. Col. (Retired) Joseph H. Poole. Ms. Poole is survived by two sisters, Suzanne Stetson and husband Bob and Beth Poole, all of Panama City Beach; one niece, Alexandra Stetson of Panama City Beach; and uncle and aunt, Lt. Col. (Retired) Joe and Nancy Mendheim of Alamogordo, N.M. Memorial services for Ms. Poole will be conducted today, Aug. 12, at 2 p.m. in Messiah Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dennis Schmidt officiating. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to Messiah Lutheran Church Building Fund in memory of Ms. Poole.

Mrs. Thelma L. Reid, of 511 E. 9th St., passed away Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at her residence after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held today, Aug. 12, at noon at Holy Temple Church of God in Christ, 802 E. 8th Court, Elder W.C. Green, Pastor; Superintendent John Gipson officiating. Interment will be held at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to funeral service at the church.

AGNES LANELLE WOODS
Mrs. Agnes Lanelle Woods, age 76, of 547 E. 5th St., Panama City, Fla., went to her heavenly home on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000. She was born in Collins, Miss., in Covinginton County and had been a resident of the Panama City area since 1969, coming here from Pensacola, Fla. Mrs. Woods loved flowers, sewing, her neighbors, and to make people laugh. She is survived by her daughters: Tommi Nell Vaughan and her husband Don, Mary Frances Best and her fiance Rick Lacy, and Betty Jo Barfield, all of Panama City, Fla.; a son, Mark Alan Woods and his wife Rita of Panama City, Fla.; son-in-law: Larry Brand of Panama City, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Nan Woods of Mary Esther, Fla.; a sister, Edith Street of Petal, Miss.; 14 grandchildren: Mike Vaughan, Debbie Pickle, Lori Vaughan, Natasha Vaughan, Paul Best, Jason Best, Sylvia Poppell, Raymond Barfield, Eric Woods, Melissa Henley, Bert Brand, Angie Porter, Charlotte McClain and Doug Brand; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan Bert "Captain Woody" Woods; a daughter, Nancy Diane Brand; a son, Stephen Bert Woods; mother, Ina Mae Yates; father, Tom McKinnon Yates; and two brothers, Charles Thomas Yates and Herman Glen Yates. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Springfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Everage officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are: Doug Brand, Paul Best, Jason Best, Raymond Barfield, Eric Woods and Mike Vaughan. The family will receive friends at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home on Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. A special thank you is extended to the caregiver for Mrs. Woods and the Hospice of the Emerald Coast. The family will be staying at the home of Mrs. Woods, 547 E. 5th St., Panama City, Fla., where the family will receive friends.

MAMIE ALICE SHEFFIELD ANDERSON
Mrs. Mamie Sheffield Anderson, 58, of 811 E. Ninth St., died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, in the Bay Medical Center. She was a lifelong native of Panama City. In her early years, Mamie attended services at Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church in Panama City. She was baptized as an infant and later became a member of Greater Bethel A.M.E. In her younger years, "Mamie" was very active. She was educated in Bay County's public schools and attended Rosenwald High School. After completion of high school, Mamie was employed on Panama City Beach. She also attended Lady Ethel Beauty College where she graduated. She enjoyed shopping, cooking, and listening to music. Mamie was a sweet and gentle princess, soft spoken with a beautiful radiant smile that overflowed in the generosity she showed to those she knew. She had a heart as big as the ocean and she saw only the good in others. Her home was your home if you were in need. She always had time for a warm or intense chat with her family, friend and acquaintances. Mamie has been an inspiration to many people, both young and old. Her caring ways and charming smile will be missed by all who knew her. Her extended family included the Lees, Lynches, Shaws, Sheffields, Myrick and Haywoods. To cherish her sweet, precious memories, Mamie leaves her loving sons, Anthony Lee and Anthoine Lee; two daughters-in-law; four granddaughters: Itranette Lee, Shaneka Lee, Desiral Lee and Ashley Lee; two grandsons, Lamar Lee and Alexander Sutton; two sisters, Rose Marie Sheffield-Myrick and Carol Elvira Sheffield-Haywood; one special niece Pamala Gail Shaw. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Anderson will be held Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. O.C. Williams, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Lawrence Gantt performing the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. Public visitation will begin this afternoon at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church. The family will receive friends at 811 E. Ninth St.

JAMES LEO BUCHANAN
Mr. James Leo Buchanan, age 73, of 5220 Shores Road, Panama City, Fla., died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at his home. He has been a resident of the area since 1966, coming here from Mobile, Ala. Mr. Buchanan was a member of the Good Shepherd Church of God. He served his country in the U.S. Navy as a deep-sea diver. Mr. Buchanan enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and loved the outdoors. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Buchanan of Panama City; sons, Donnie Buchanan and Ronnie Buchanan, both of Panama City; a grandson, Tim Buchanan and wife Crystal, of Panama City; great-grandson, Matthew Buchanan of Panama City; and a great-granddaughter, Ashleigh Buchanan of Panama City; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Buchanan of Ocean Springs, Miss.; nephews, Gene Buchanan and Gil Buchanan, both of Ocean Springs, Miss. Mr. Buchanan was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Buchanan and a grandson, Brian Buchanan. Funeral services will be held 3:30 p.m. today at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Pledger officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Mittie Shattles, 83, of Port St. Joe, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000. Born in Altha, she is a longtime resident of Port St. Joe Beach, a homemaker and member of Oak Grove Assembly of God. Mrs. Shattles is survived by one son and his wife Howard and Ann Mitchell of Blakely, Ga.; one daughter and her husband, Betty and J.C. McArdle; two sisters, Jennie Taylor of Page Pond, and Edell Laramore of Panama City; five grandchildren: Michael Mitchell, Donny McArdle, Jeffery Mitchell, Melinda Arnold, Melissa Duke; 10 great-grandchildren: Jerrod McArdle, Christopher Mitchell, Channey McArdle, Emilie Mitchell, Elissa Woods, Cody Woods, Garrett Mitchell, Andrew Arnold, Ashley Johns and Macy Arnold. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at 11 a.m. EDT in the Page Pond Cemetery with the Rev. David Fernandez officiating.
