Mrs. Hrefna Swanson, age 69, who had resided in Panama City, Fla., for the last twenty-two years, who loved and cared for her children and grandchildren with the deepest devotion, passed away at her home on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001. She is survived by one daughter, Sandra Shiver of Panama City; three sons: Gunnar Swanson of Panama City, Bob Swanson and his wife Sue of Frederick, Md., and Pete Swanson and his wife Mary of Panama City; five grandchildren: Erica and Kyle Swanson of Frederick, Md., Justin Shiver of Panama City:, Hannah and Miranda Swanson of Panama City, who loved and depended on her very much; and many close friends. She will be very deeply missed. The family will receive friends at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home today, Feb. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m.

JANICE RAY CRANDALL
On Jan. 14, 2001, Ms. Janice Ray Crandall of Panama City, Fla., age 52, lost her two year battle with breast cancer. Born on Feb. 20, 1948, she is the daughter of the late Mr. Robert S. Ray and the late Mrs. Mary J. Ray. She is the sister of the late Norma June Ray. She is survived by a daughter, Pamela J. Fullmer; grandsons, Justin M. Fullmer and Jeremy W. Fullmer; nephew, David J. Lewis and his three children: Amy Lewis, Joe Lewis and Ben Lewis; niece, Debra Clark and her daughter, Sarah Arnold. Janice was a teacher for more than 20 years at Rosenwald Middle School and was a teacher in Bay County for about 31 years. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to: Janice Ray Crandall Memorial Fund at AmSouth Bank Acct. No. 3013718827.

Joseph Franklin Geren, 61, of Panama City, Fla., died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, in his home. He was a retired automotive salesman. He had been a resident of Panama City for 14 years moving here from Cleveland, Tenn. He was a member of Northside Presbyterian Church in Cleveland. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Drew Thompson. He is survived by his wife, Ivey Geren of Panama City; two daughters, Kristy Thompson and her husband, Sam, Kay Shelton and her husband, Andy; mother, Neesie Sprouse; brother, Don Garen, all of Cleveland; three grandsons: Russell Thompson of New Orleans, La., Garrett Coon, Bodie Shelton; and a great-grandson, Zackary Thompson, all of Cleveland. Funeral services and burial will be held in Cleveland with the Ralph Buchner Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Roy (Gunny) McNeil, 86, of 1346 Palo Alto Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, in the Panama City Nursing Center. He was a lifelong native of Panama City. Funeral services for Mr. McNeil will be held today, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. in New Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. James Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Redwood Cemetery. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church. The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby and Piquieta White of 713 Satsuma Ave.

Mr. Steven Marell, 26, of 165 Hill Circle, Wewahitchka, Fla., died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Panama City. He graduated with honors from Wewa High School in 1993. He was employeed with Gulf County RCA. He is survived by a loving and devoted mother and father, Lydia Oney (Robert); sister, Cardrella Michelle Garland (Gregory Sr.); brother, Mojo-Jimmie Peterson Jr. (Roniquea), all of Wewahitchka; grandparents, Cardrell and Bettye Nelson, and Elder Hosea and Dorothy Mincy, and Carrie and the late Herbert Peterson all of Lynn Haven; a godmother, Leola (AD) Johnson of Lynn Haven; one special adored uncle, Solomon Nelson; three nieces: Keneshia, Tamara and Catera; four nephews: Thomas, Devante, Jordon and Elliot; two other brothers, Leonard Cromartie and Deruiter Perry; godsister, Nana LaKenya Barnes; a very dear cousin he loved and wanted to be like (TK) Tony Kyle Jr.; two special close friends, Mr. Truman Mincy of Tallahassee and Miss Tanisha Fisher of Wewahitchka; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives and many friends. Funeral services for Mr. Nelson will be held Sunday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. in Triumph Church of God in Wewahitchka with Elder Harley Watkins, officiating. Interment to follow in Williamsburg Cemetery. The remains will lie in state at the church on Sunday from 10 a.m. until service time. The family will receive friends at 165 Hill Circle, Wewahitchka.

MARY ELNORA ROBERSON
Mrs. Mary Elnora Roberson, 94, of Campbellton, Fla., died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, in Blountstown Health Care Center following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., today, Feb. 3, at Campbellton First Baptist Church with the Rev. Shelly Chandler and the Rev. Luther Pumphrey oofficiating. Burial will follow in church cemetery with James and Lipford Funeral Home of Graceville directing. Mrs. Roberson was born in Sheppard, Mich., on Jan. 24, 1907, living in the Campbellton area for many years. She was a homemaker and a member of Campbellton First Baptist Church. She is survived by three sons: Orval Lee Roberson and his wife, Joann of Altha, Billy B. Roberson and his wife, Elizabeth of Bristol, Johnny R. Roberson of Jacksonville; brother, Jessie Freeman and his wife, Ruth of Sarasota, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Adie Foy Gibson of Pensacola, Margaret Freeeman of Brandon, Fla.; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Cheryl Burton Betz, 40, of Bismark, N.D., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, in a North Dakota hospital. Born in Long Island, N.Y. she moved here in 1963 from Okinawa, Japan. She was a homemaker, loving wife, mother and daughter. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and a graduate of Rutherford High School. She was a dedicated Christian, had been the choir director for two years at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and was still active in all Christian activities with her church. Mrs. Betz is survived by her Christian family, her parents, Kenneth W. Burton Jr. and Sylvia Burton of Parker, Fla.; her husband, Charles Betz; two children, Chase and Cole Betz all of Bismark, N.D.; one sister, Robin Burton-Lees and husband Harry of Bourne, Texas; two brothers, the Rev. Kenneth W. Burton, III and wife Terry of Little Rock, Ark. and Eric Scott Burton of Panama City Beach; maternal grandmother, Sylvia Beuttennueller of New Jersey; paternal grandfather, Kenneth W. Burton Sr. of New Castle, Ind. and numerous loving aunts, uncles and other family members. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Callaway, with the Pastor Gary Hill officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Holton R. Mr. Hjalmar Joesph Hanson (Chum), 81, of Mexico Beach, Fla., passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001. He was born in Rhinelander, Wis. Mr. Hanson graduated from Rhinelander High School before joining U.S. Army Air Corp. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and belonged to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mexico Beach, Fla. He retired from the grocery business in Milwaukee, Wis., in 1980. Mr. Hanson is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Louise Hanson; two sons, Robert J. Hanson of Panama City and Michael R. Hanson of North Augusta, S.C.; three grandchildren, Heather Hanson Aliaga and husband Maykel of Tallahassee, Fla.; Lance Hanson and Sabrina Hanson, both of Tallahassee; two great-grandchildren, Marco and Sophia Aliaga of Tallahassee; one sister, Betty Keso and husband Floyd of Rhinelander; nieces, Judy Schinke and families of Rhinelander; Mary Patricia Kuczmarski and daughters Lynn, Paula and their families of Rhinelander; one sister-in-law, Ruth Hanson; nephews Gene and Steve Hanson and their families, nieces Kay, Lottie and Mary and their families, all of Wisconsin; sister-in-law Sadie Hester of Greenwood, Miss; sister-in-law, Doris Hefner and son Dale of Marianna, Fla.; nephews by marriage, Johnnie, Billy and Charles Rickles and their families of Greenwood, Miss.; nieces by marriage, Rose Ann Crook of Boston, Mass.; and Nell White of Greenwood. ESTHER BANKS KENNEDY
Esther Banks Kennedy, 86, of Southport, Fla., died Friday, February 2, 2001, in a local nursing home. She was born Effie Mae Nichols on September 15, 1914, to Ellis & Ophelia Nichols. Upon her parents' death, she was adopted at the age of 15 by loving parents, Ed & Lucy Banks, who were homesteaders and pioneers of the Sand Hills area. She took the name of Esther in honor of the Banks' only child who died at birth and is buried at White Western. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin S. Kennedy; son, Ralph Lisenby; daughter, Delores Jensen; parents, Ed & Lucy Banks; brothers, Ellis Nichols, Rufus Nichols, Robert Nichols, Tom Banks, Thad Banks; sister, Ethel N. Walters; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She is survived by six daughters, Shirley Moore and husband Marvin of Dunnellon, Fla.; Elma Deane Newsom and husband Joe; Jeanette McLemore; Joyce Yetter and husband Bill; Martha Somnitz and husband Buddy; Twyla Lindsay; 21 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the Mashburn Cemetery. Joe Glenn Love Jr., 66, of Panama City Beach, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in a local hospital. He was a native of Barbour County, Ala. Memorial services for Mr. Love will be announced at a later date. The family has requested memorialization by cremation.

JAMES E. "JIM" MANTZ
James E. "Jim" Mantz, age 68, of Panama City, passed away Feb. 2, 2001, at a local hospital. A native of Havaco, W.Va., Mr. Mantz had lived in Panama City for 38 years, moving here from Portugal. He had retired as a master sergeant after 24 years of service in the United States Air Force. He then worked as manager for the baseball and skeeball park at Signal Hill, retiring in 1997 after 22 years. He was Baptist by faith and enjoyed woodworking in his shop and fishing with his grandchildren, Josh and Heidi. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joyce Mantz of Panama City; one son, James B. Mantz and wife Jo of Panama City; one daughter, Joy L. Evans and husband Delmar of Panama City Beach; one brother, Douglas Mantz and wife Margaret of Cloverdale, Va.; two sisters, Dorothy Berry and husband Alva of St. Albans, W.Va.; and Polly Morehead of Austinville, Va.; two grandsons, Joshua A. Mantz of Cumming, Ga.; and Justin B. Evans of Panama City Beach; three granddaughters, Heather Evans of Panama City Beach; Heidi Wardwell and husband Christopher of Lynn Haven; and Tarin Miller of Panama City; one great-grandson, Cameron Wardwell of Lynn Haven. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, from graveside at Evergreen Memorial Gardens with Chaplain Buddy Walker officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Tyndall Air Force Base Honor Guard will follow. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m., today, Feb. 4, 2001.
