JOHN LOFTON ROPER JR.
Mr. John Lofton Roper Jr., age 75, of 1025 W. 19th St., Panama City, Fla., died Monday, March 5, 2001, at his home. He had been a resident of the area since 1972, coming here from Birmingham, Ala. Mr. Roper served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a pilot. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church. He also enjoyed racing of all kinds. Mr. Roper is survived by his wife of 40 years, Claudine Roper of Panama City; two daughters, Mary Green and Lynn Bagwell and her husband Brian; two sons, Commander Arthur Wayne Devine, retired, and his wife Reiko of Orlando and Master Chief Raleigh Dee Devine, retired, of Charleston, S.C.; two brothers, Wilburn Roper and Blenard Roper of Birmingham; one sister, Sarah Nell Peacock of Birmingham; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home with Deacon Dale Johnson officiating. Entombment will follow at the Forest Lawn Chapel of Love. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are Ronnie Walsingham, Brian Bagwell, David Green, Arthur Devine, Andy Devine and Donald Green. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, March 7, from 6 to 8 p.m.

GIOVANNI 'JOHN' TUMIO
Mr. Giovanni "John" Tumio, age 72, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, March 5, 2001, from his home. He was a native of New York, retiring to Panama City in 1990 from New Jersey. Mr. Tumio is survived by his wife, Emma Lee Tumio of Panama City; two sons, Johnie and Joseph Tumio of Hackensack, N.J.; one stepson, Ronald Carter and his wife Rosa Anna of Callaway; one stepdaughter, Teresa Musser and her husband Steve of Callaway; six grandchildren, Michael, Chris, and David Carter of Birmingham, Amber, Shawn, and Nicholas Musser of Callaway; one step-granddaughter, Lanell Warren of Panama City; seven great-grandchildren, Ryan, Jessie, Cody, Cameron, Timothy, Kalab Carter and Cheyenne Warren; one sister, Francis Taddonio of Hazelton, Pa.; and two brothers, Tony and Joseph Tumio of Bronx, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; and four brothers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Panama City Dialysis Center Patient Fund, 510 N. MacArthur Ave., Panama City, FL 32401. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Memorialization will be by cremation.

Shane Carey Wells, age 44, of Panama City Beach, Fla., died Monday, March 5, 2001, at his residence. He was a native of Murphy, N.C., and had been living in Bay County for the past year. The family requests memorialization by cremation.

Mrs. Lois Metzger, 74, of 160 Hitckcock Road, Southport, Fla., died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at a local hospital. She had been a resident of the area since 1985, coming here from Port St. Joe, Fla. Mrs. Metzger attended St. John's Catholic Church and was a very outgoing person who was young at heart. She is survived by one son, Kenny Deehl and his wife Michelle of Southport; three sisters, Ruth Burney of Addison, Ala., Joyce Wyatt of Albany, Ga., and Peggy Brown of Centranell, Ala.; and one great-grandson, Cody Deehl of Southport. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, March 9, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Winfred King officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, March 8, from 6 until 8 p.m.

CONNIE PITTS
Graveside services for Connie Pitts will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 9, at Prairie Haven Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home. Pitts, 26, entered into rest on Saturday, March 3, 2001. She was born July 23, 1974, in Hobbs, N.M. She is survived by her parents, Jim and Dianne Pitts, of Hobbs. Mr. Pitts formerly lived in Panama City, Fla. One sister, Kim Allred and one brother, Rodney Pitts, both of Hobbs; her grandparents, Rudolph and Maxine Pitts of Panama City, and Neal and Cletus Wilson of Hobbs; three nieces, Cheyenne Perkins, Ashley Aten and Keri Pitts; one nephew, Chase Pitts; her uncle, Don; aunt, Linda Bland; and one cousin, Michelle Bland, all of Hobbs. She is also survived by her fiancé, James Crume; and a very special friend, Mace Petty. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Polly Pitts; and her granddad, Alvin Bland.

CAROLYN ROOKS
Mrs. Carolyn Rooks, 84, of 1609 W. 10th St., Panama City, Fla., died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at her home. She had been a resident of the area since 1945, coming here from Cottondale, Fla. Mrs. Rooks was a member of St. Andrew Baptist Church and the Panama City Garden Club. She is survived by her daughter Gloria LeSuer of Panama City; a grandson Richard Alan LeSuer of Panama City; a granddaughter Diane J. Reid of Panama City; great-granddaughters, Tasha Thomas and Jennifer L. LeSuer; a great-grandson Cody Sawyer; and a great-great-grandson Logan LeSuer. She was preceded in death by her husband Alvin F. Rooks and a son Gerald A. Rooks. Graveside funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 9, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Henry Hazard officiating. Interment will follow. The family will receive friends at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home today, March 8, from 6 until 8 p.m.

ALTO CLETIS STEPHENS
Mr. Alto Cletis Stephens, 86, of Wewahitchka, entered into eternal peace and rest Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in Panama City. He was a retired truck driver for the St. Joe Paper Co. and after many years a resident of Port St. Joe. He retired to Wewahitchka in 1982. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wewahitchka. Mr. Stephens was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army with the 464th Headquarters and Base Service Squadron in England and Europe from 1942 to 1945. Born Jan. 8, 1915, in Bascom, Jackson County, Fla., he was the son of Wesley William Edgar Stephens and Nonie Emily Helms. He is preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Wesley Stephens; a brother, William Curtis Stephens, late of Malone, Fla.; three sisters, Irene Stephens, Vida Edell Peterson, and Eva Faustine Atwell; and a son-in-law, Walter Francis Kingsbury. Mr. Stephens is survived by his wife of 41 years, Martha Stephens of Wewahitchka; two daughters by his first marriage to Nadine E. Ditty, Mary Kathryn Kingsbury and Norma Dell Kucera and her husband Martin Kucera, all of Winter Haven, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Anne Stephens of Riverside, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Victoria Scott and her husband John Scott of Marianna, and Cheryl Pate of Wewahitchka; a stepson, Frank Bass; several stepgrandchildren; three sisters, Willa Dean Chandler of Bascom, Pauline Hatcher of Chattahoochee, Fla., and Ida Mae Hodges of Cottondale, Fla.; three brothers, James 'Bus' Stephens of Chattahoochee, Ralph Stephens of Bascom, and Coley Gaston Stephens of Dothan, Ala.; sister-in-law, Inez Stephens of Malone; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted on Feb 25, 2001, at First Baptist Church of Wewahitchka with the Rev. Mike Stroud officiating. Mr. Stephens was laid to rest at the Cypress Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Kinard, Calhoun County, Fla.

ALLEN H. STEVER
Allen H. Stever, master sergeant, USAF, retired, 62, of Parker, Fla., went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, March 6, 2001, after a six-year battle with leukemia. Master Sgt. Stever had lived in the Parker area since 1977, coming here from Anchorage, Alaska. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force, retiring after 21 years. Master Sgt. Stever's favorite pastimes were golfing and fishing, especially his yearly fly-fishing trips to Alaska for salmon. He was of the Lutheran faith. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 37 years, Brigitte E. Stever of Parker; mother, Edith Bentz of Ludington, Mich.; a daughter, Barbara McNulty of Anchorage; a son, Allen R. Stever of Lynn Haven, Fla.; three brothers, Bruce Bentz of Sturgeon Bay, Wisc., Brian Bentz of Custer, Mich., and Jerry Stever of Valpariso, Ind.; and two sisters, Patricia Derby of Eugene, Ore., and Sandra Duff of Olympia, Wash. Memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with military honors. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Leukemia Society.

RAYMOND DWIGHT BARBER
Raymond Dwight Barber, 70, of Chipley, Fla., passed from this life on Thursday, March 8, 2001, at his residence. He had been a resident of Chipley for the past 52 years coming from Enterprise, Ala. He was of the Assembly of God faith and a member of the New Life Fellowship Assembly of God in Chipley. He was also a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association. He is survived by his wife, Carol Barber of Chipley; son, Norman and wife Marsha Barber of Cottonwood, Ala.; two daughters, Greta and husband Paul Draayom and Luwana and husband Euliss Locke, all of Chipley; brother, Wayne Barber of Alford, Fla.; sister, Gwendolyn Peel of Chipley; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Locke, Ben Locke, Brian and Thomas Barber, Phillip Draayom and Ethan Draayom; great-grandchild, Matthew Barber. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 10, at 10 a.m. in the Wachob Chapel in Chipley with the Rev. Clinton Howell, Rev. Randy Albritton and Rev. Phillip Draayom officiating. Burial will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery with Brown Funeral Home Directing. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, March 9, at the Wachob Chapel.
