E.W. 'JUDGE' CARSWELL
E.W. "Judge" Carswell, civic leader, folklorist, historian, and retired columnist for the Pensacola News-Journal, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in Chipley. He was born January 4, 1916, in Holmes County, Fla. Mr. Carswell served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Arcadia, La., and attended Louisiana Tech University, Ruston, La., where he was editor of the campus newspaper (before and after his World War II service), and president of his fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon. While in the U.S. 2nd Army Corps (with 597 days of combat) he founded a newspaper, the Barracks Bag Express, which was circulated to troops in Europe during World War II. After returning from the war, he completed his B.A. in journalism at Louisiana Tech in 1946, staying on as assistant professor for three years. Mr. Carswell returned to Milton, Fla., in 1949, to become editor of the Milton Press-Gazette. Recognized as an author, educator, historian and community leader, he chaired several northwest Florida historical societies and served on more than 25 boards, committees and advisory groups throughout the state, among these the Rural Development Council, the Florida Farmers Home Administration Advisory Committee, and the Florida Board of Parks and Historic Memorials. He served in 1960 as president of Chipley Kiwanis Club and was also a founding board member of First Bank of Holmes County. In 1963, he was named recipient of the Florida Press Association "Editorial Oscar" in the weekly newspaper division. He was named Florida's "Man of the Year for Agriculture" in 1966, and in 1976 was awarded a Bicentennial Patriot Medal for efforts to improve the quality of life for fellow citizens. Mr. Carswell also served on the Florida Folklife Council and in 1989 received the Florida Folk Heritage Award. From 1963 to 1967 he was mayor of Chipley. He is the author of Tempestuous Triangle, Holmesteading: The History of Holmes County, Florida, Washington: Florida's 12th County, among many other books and booklets about the history and folklore of his beloved Florida Panhandle. Louisiana Tech University honored him in 1992 with the Tower Medallion Award, which honors alumni who have distinguished themselves by exceptional achievement, community service, and humanitarian activities, and brought permanent recognition by including him in the university's "Hall of Distinguished Alumni." In 1996, he was profiled by Kevin M. McCarthy in the book 20th Century Florida Authors. Mr. Carswell is survived by his wife of 43 years, Catherine Powell Carswell; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol Carswell Bhide and Vasant, of Jacksonville, and Melody Carsell Berry and David of Lexington, Ky.; a son and daughter-in-law, David Clements Carswell and Mary of Chipley; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert H. Carswell and Louise of Panama City; four sisters, Myrtle Campbell and husband J. Lee of Milton; Onie B. Howell of Bonifay; Vera Hartzog and Amie Hendrix of Jacksonville; five grandchildren, David Carswell Jr., Caleb Wesley Carswell, Kari Frances Carswell, Maya Bhide Ellis, and Monika Carswell Bhide; and a great-granddaughter, Jennalyn Elizabeth Carswell. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 14, in Bonifay Cemetery in Bonifay. There will not be a visitation. WILLIAM RALPH DEASON
Mr. William Ralph Deason, age 93, of Bristol, died Wednesday in Blountstown Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Deason was a native and lifelong resident of Bristol and a retired saw mill operator. He was a member of Bristol Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include his wife, Maude Deason of Bristol; one son, Edsel Deason of Bristol; three daughters, Willa Dean Huard of Merrimack, N.H.; Syble Halley of Blountstown; Norma Jean Vittum of Bristol; two brothers, Wilifred Deason of Bristol; Carlos Deason of Quincy; one sister, Lessie Revell of Bristol; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. EST Saturday at the Bristol Church of God with the Rev. Terry Blackburn and the Rev. Shelly Chandler officiating. CLARENCE EDISON GIBSON SR.
Funeral services for Clarence Edison Gibson Sr., 89, of 4038 Woodridge Rd., Panama City, who died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, in a local hospital, will be held today at 2 p.m. in Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Dewey Davidson, Dr. Bill Montgomery, and the Rev. Dan Harrison officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. HENRY DAVID MASSALENE JR.
Mr. Henry D. Massalene Jr., 43, of 1402 Michigan Ave., Lynn Haven, died Friday, April 6, 2001, in Birmingham, Ala. Mr. Henry David Massalene Jr. was born to the late Henry Massalene Sr. and Annie L. Massalene on July 30, 1957, in Panama City, Fla. He was baptized at an early age and joined New Hope Baptist Church in Lynn Haven. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Massalene Sr. and his stepfather, Freddie Norman. Henry enlisted in the United States Navy on July 7, 1974, and served as a radio operator until his honorable discharge. He was employed as a chef and worked in retail sales until his death. He leaves to mourn, his wife, Sharon Denise Massalene; two children by marriage, Antwain Bice and Jessica Bice. He also leaves to mourn a very devoted mother, Annie L. Massalene-Norman; four sisters and five brothers, a sister and brother by marriage: Annie McConnell (Horace), Lynn Haven, Beatrice Crittenden (Willie), Jacqueline Tubbs (Chuckie) of Panama City; Henretta Cobb of Alpharetta, Ga.; Freddie Mae Jackson, Panama City; a sister by marriage, Enoch Massalene (Bridgett), Lynn Haven; Emory Massalene, Savannah, Ga.; Robert Massalene (Cassandra), Atlanta; Timothy Massalene, Lake City; Sian Massalene, Crestview; and John Hill, Marianna, a brother by marriage. Pearlie Mae Seaborn McKinney, 76, of Chipley, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, in Chipley. Born in Ozark, Ala., she was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She is survived by five sons: James Seaborn and his wife Kim of Cottondale; Marcus Blue and his wife Brenda of Chipley; Robert Seaborn of Chipley; Rusty Seaborn and his wife Sheila of Greenville, Ala.; Richard Seaborn and his wife Jan of Cottondale; four daughters, Doris Hundley of Panama City; Joyce Cason and her husband Art of Chipley; Jeanette Jernigan of Vernon; and Edna McLachlan and her husband James of Cottondale; one sister, Florence Hightower of Panama City; 25 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Betty Sue Romack, 65, of 2455 Pretty Bayou Circle, Panama City, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, in a Tallahassee nursing home. Born in Defuniak Springs, she was a lifelong resident of this area. She was a homemaker and Baptist by faith. Mrs. Romack is survived by her husband, Joseph C. Romack of Panama City; three sons, Stewart Francis Romack and wife Sydney of Tallahassee; Bradley Lindsey Romack and wife Libby of Panama City; Joseph Gilbert Romack and wife Carol Ann of Yulee, Fla.; four grandchildren, Angela Marie Romack, Michelle Couch, Justin Alexander Baldwin and George Bondur Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas James Couch and Jennifer Nicole Couch. BALLA DAVIS SELLARS
Balla Davis Sellars, age 91, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in DeFuniak Springs, Fla. Ms. Sellars was born Sept. 20, 1909, in Walton County, Fla., the daughter of the late Mary Cosson. She was raised and attended school in Walton County, but lived most of her life in Panama City. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Panama City. When her health would allow, she was very active in church functions and supported the church in every way. She is preceded in death by her husband, Herchel Alonzo Sellars, who passed away on Nov. 5, 1987. She is also preceded in death by her sister, Callie Parker. Survivors include her son, David Sellars and wife, Aurelia Ann of Tallahassee and grandson, Andy Sellars of Tallahassee. A time of visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today, April 13, at Clary-Godwin Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at Clary-Godwin Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Watts officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.

MYRTIS POSTON CRAFT
Myrtis Poston Craft, 83, of 1623 Primrose Lane, Panama City, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, in a local hospital. She had been a resident of Panama City since 1942, moving here from Birmingham, Ala. She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church and was a former member of Panama City Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James E. Poston and her second husband, Carl Craft. She is survived by two sons, James E. Poston of Panama City, Julius C. Poston and his wife, Susan, of Douglasville, Ga.; daughter, Jane Poston Johnson and her husband, Edward of Panama City; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J.E. Hodges and the Rev. Jim Kirkland officiating. Interment will follow in Parker Cemetery. Mr. William G. "Bill" Grady Jr., age 77 of Lynn Haven, passed away ThursdayApril 12, 2001, at a local nursing facility. A native of Hart County, Ky., Mr. Grady had lived in Lynn Haven for 23 years, moving here from China Lake, Calif. He was a retired electronics technician, working for the civil service for 25 years. He retired from the Naval Costal Systems Station in Panama City where he received numerous letters of commendation. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lynn Haven where he was a member of the choir and the Anglers Sunday School Class. Survivors include his wife, Judi Grady of Lynn Haven; one daughter, Patti Moon and her husband Jay of Austin, Texas; one granddaughter, Kelly Weddington and husband Darrell of Oregon; two brothers, Paul Grady of El Paso, Texas and Butch Grady of Louisville, Ky.; one sister-in-law, Connie Grady of Nashville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille Logsdon Grady; a daughter, Sara Howard; a brother, Dan Grady; and a sister, Nixola Grady. GORDON OWEN PRESCOTT
Mr. Gordon Owen "Ted" Prescott, 85, of Panama City, Fla., died Friday, April 13, 2001, in a local convalescent center. Born in Elba, Ala., he moved here in 1980, from Elba. He was a mail carrier in Elba for 281/2 years and had been employed by the U.S. Government Engineering Department. He had been a lifelong member of the Methodist church in Elba. Gordon entered the U.S. Army as a member of the engineering battalion but specialized in supply and transportation becoming a master sergeant in just three years. Six brothers and one sister precede Mr. Prescott in death. He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Ruby Prescott of Panama City Beach, whom he married in October of 1946. A visitation will be held today, April 14 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Southerland Family Funeral Home.
