STOKES K. BARKSDALE
Stokes K. Barksdale, 68, of Fountain, passed away Sunday, April 15, 2001, at his residence. He was a native of Greenville, N.C., and had lived in Fountain for the last 8 years after moving here from St. Cloud, Fla. He was a retired general contractor and had served in the United States Army. He was Episcopalian by faith and was a member of the Raleigh, N.C. Masonic Lodge and Shriners. He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Betty Barksdale of Fountain; two stepsons, Mark Edward Watson and wife, Mignon of Orlando and Stephen Woods and wife, Sue of Germany; one stepdaughter, Diane Praytor of Elba, Ala.; one brother, William Bennett Barksdale of Winston-Salem, N.C.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Key officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Asked to serve as pallbearers are Mark Watson, Shannon Watson, Jason Watson, Clint Watson, Eli Praytor and Zack Praytor. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, April 17, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m .

Funeral services for Richard M. Fisher, 78, of Panama City Beach, who died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at his residence, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church with Father David O'Shea officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, April 16, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m .

WILLIAM G. GRADY JR.
Mr. William G. "Bill" Grady Jr., 77, of Lynn Haven, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2001, at a local nursing facility. A native of Hart County, Ky., Mr. Grady had lived in Lynn Haven for 23 years after moving here from China Lake, Calif. He was a retired electronics technician, working civil service for 25 years. He retired from the Naval Coastal Systems Station in Panama City where he received numerous letters of commendation. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lynn Haven where he was a member of the choir and the Anglers Sunday school class. Survivors include his wife, Judi Grady of Lynn Haven; one daughter, Patti Moon and her husband, Jay of Austin, Texas; one granddaughter, Kelly Weddington and husband, Darryl of Oregon; two brothers, Paul Grady and wife, Barbara and family of El Paso, Texas and David "Butch" Grady of Louisville, Ky.; one sister-in-law, Connie Grady and family of Nashville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille Logsdon Grady; a daughter, Sara Howard; a brother, Dan Grady; and a sister, Nixola Grady. Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. today at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Esmond Hilton officiating. Burial will follow Wednesday at the Pearl Webb Cemetery in Canmer, Ky. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either the Mental Health Association of Bay County, the American Cancer Society or the First Baptist Church of Lynn Haven .

Funeral services for Louie J. Nichols, 78, of 3342 Bradenton Ave., in Panama City, who died Friday, April 13, 2001, at a local hospital will be held at 10 a.m. today, April 16, 2001, at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dan Pickerill and the Rev. Ken Brookins officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Asked to serve as pallbearers are Stephen Nichols, Greg Nichols, Jason Nichols, Ryan Williams, Randy Carpenter and Burtt Howle .

HEWITT HILLARD PENTON
Hewitt Hillard Penton, 85, of Pine Valley Retirement Community in Tuscaloosa, Ala., who was formerly of Panama City and Huntsville, Ala., passed away on Friday, April 13, 2001, at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. Hewitt's mother, Hettie Vera Warner Penton; his father, Randall A. Penton; and his brother, Joe W. Penton preceded him in death. Hewitt is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jo Thelma Thomas Penton of Tuscaloosa, who is formerly of Panama City and Huntsville; his daughters, Madeline D'ree Penton Sitzes of Houston, Texas and Dorothy Jean Penton Crawford of Greensboro, Ala.; his sisters, Mildred A. Richbourg of Panama City and Ruby Delcomyn of Youngstown; grandchildren: Holly Crawford Ellis of Huntsville, James Matthew Crawford of Dallas and Madeline Elizabeth Crawford of Birmingham, Ala.; great-grandson, William Parker Ellis of Huntsville; and other relatives. After several years of employment at the U.S. Navy Mine Defense Laboratory in Panama City, Hewitt transferred to the Third Army Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, where he served as an electronic specialist with the Pershing Missile Command until his retirement. Hewitt held advanced amateur radio operator license W4FRQ. He was an amateur genealogist and contributed to several publications about the Penton and Warner descendents. He was a radio operator with the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II. The U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration awarded him the Atlantic War Zone Bar, the Mediterranean Middle East War Zone Bar and the Victory Medal. He received the U.S. Coast Guard Certificate of Service for qualification aboard American vessels at least 100-ton gross with rating of radio operator. Hewitt's community involvement included being a volunteer ham radio operator serving during times of local emergencies, a lifetime member of the American Legion and a long time member of the Church of Nativity, Episcopal in Huntsville. He was a 32nd degree Mason of the OSO Naval Lodge 1282 of Corpus Christi, Texas; a member of Kiwanis International of Huntsville and a member of the Shrine Cahaba Temple of Huntsville. Donations in Hewitt H. Penton's memory may be made to the Shriners' Burn Hospital for Children-Galveston Unit, 815 Market St., Galveston, TX 77550 in care of Brenda Camp, Admin. Ass't. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 17, at 2 p.m. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Beach Drive, Panama City, FL with internment following at Greenwood Cemetery in Panama City. Visitation will be today, April 16, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wilson Funeral Home in Panama City .

ALICE IMOGENE WALTERS
Alice Imogene Walters, 62, of 2709 East 7th Court in Panama City, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, in a local nursing home. She had been a lifelong resident of Panama City. She is survived by her husband, J.R. Walters of Panama City; two sons, Randy McBride and his wife, Sherry of Cottondale, and Ronald McBride and his wife, Regina and their daughter, Stephanie Walters, all of Panama City; five sisters: Ezella Buxton, Catherine Thomason, Dorothy Sellers, Mildred Taylor and Dale McKenzie; three brothers: Ronnie Pitts, Hulon Pitts and Emory Pitts; stepsister, Francis Terry; six grandchildren: Devan McBride, Lauren McBride, Taby McBride, Sarah McBride, Nathaniel McBride and Kaitlin McBride; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gene Smith officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Active pallbearers will be her nephews .

Infant Ethan Kristian Blair of 1804 Cherry St., Panama City, Fla., died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at a local hospital. He is survived by his parents, James and Tria Blair of Panama City; brothers and sister, Trevor Blair, Jessica Blair and Micah Blair, all of Panama City; maternal grandmother, Barbara Mann of Atlanta, Ga.; maternal grandfather, Robert Gravley Sr. of Powder Springs, Ga.; paternal grandmother, Nell Gore of Patterson, Calif.; paternal step-grandfather, Jessie Gore of Patterson, Calif.; maternal great-grandmother, Marion Mann of Smyrna, Ga.; maternal great-grandmother, Bessie Jane Gravley of Smyrna; numerous aunts and uncles; and Godmother, Shirley Ward of Turlock, Calif. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., today, April 17, at Garden of Memories with the Rev. Nathan Keen officiating. Interment will follow.

JONATHAN JAMES DEGROAT
Jonathan James Degroat, age 22, of Panama City, Fla., passed away Easter Sunday, April 15, 2001, after a long illness. He was a graduate of Bay High School, a student at Gulf Coast Community College and a volunteer at Patronis Elementary School. He attended Panama City First Church of the Nazarene. He is survived by his parents, Art and Gloria Degroat of Panama City; one brother, Jeremy Degroat of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and grandparents, James and Dorothy Hoffpauir of Crowley, La., and Arthur Degroat Sr. of Alexandria, La. His grandmother, Mamie Stieber Degroat, and his stepgrandmother, Eva Miller Degroat, precede him in death. Friends may visit at Southerland Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. today, April 17. Pastors Joe and Kim Purl will officiate in a short memorial service at the end of the visitation. A homegoing service will be held at Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Pineville, La., on Friday, with burial immediately following. Friends who wish to do so may send flowers to the funeral home in Pineville or make a donation to either Hospice of Northwest Florida or the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Mamie Spradley, age 89, of Dothan, Ala., died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center. She was a resident of Dothan for 10 years, moving there from Panama City, Fla. Mrs. Spradley was a member of Cloverdale Baptist Church and enjoyed sewing, yardwork, crocheting, and cooking. She is survived by a daughter, Martha Sexton and her husband Harry of Dothan, Ala.; six stepchildren, Lillian Sweat of Edgewater, Fla., Jackie Griffith of Houston, Texas, Wilma Oliver of Panama City Beach, Carolyn Medlock of Youngstown, Faye Braitsch of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Dewey Spradley of Panama City; a brother, Carey Tew of Panama City; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.D. Spradley Sr. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 18, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Singletary officiating. Interment will follow at Callaway Cemetery. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are Ken Sexton, Steve Sexton, William Ray, Adam Ray, Jerry Tew and Harold Tew. Mrs. Willie Mae "Pookie" Carroll, of 1802 Flower Ave., Building I, Apt. 102, died April 12, 2001, in a local center. She was a native of Sneads, Fla.,and a resident of Panama City for many years. She was a member of Glenwood Church of Christ. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Oscar Carroll of Panama City; four sons, Dwight Wilson (Brenda), James Wilson (Alice), Glendell Johnson (Tanisha), and Ronald Wilson (Jackie); four loving daughters, Lyndall Leaphart (Bland), Patricia Guilford (Reginald), Tammy Hicks (Oliver), and Elaine Carroll (Lonnie Ray), all of Panama City; one stepson, Mike Carroll (Shirley); three stepdaughters, Marvalena Gray (Bruce), Jewlrey Tillman, and Pansy Carroll; two brothers, Dempsey Wilson and G-Man Wilson; one sister, Corine Polk; 39 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral service for Mrs. Carroll will be held Thursday, April 19 at 2 p.m. with Brother Xerxes M. Snell, officiating. Interment to follow in Hillside Cemetery. The remains will lie in state at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time. The family will receive relatives and friends at 1802 Flower Ave., Building I, Apt. 102.
