Rufus Milton Hood
May 14, 1915 - September 25, 2007

Rufus Milton Hood, 92, DeLand, died Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at University Center West, DeLand. Mr. Hood was born in Albertville, AL and moved from there to this area in 1956. He was a water system supervisor for the City of Lake Helen for 10 years. He served for over 40 years in the U.S. Navy. He was a Lt. Commander during World War II and the Korean conflict and a veteran of Pearl Harbor. He was well known in the Lake Helen community. He founded the first youth center with donations of construction. He was a handyman that enjoyed morning walks, traveling, watching "Price is Right," spending time with family and helping out his small town. His last wishes were to tell the City Commissioners of Lake Helen, "I ate the map."

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vida Hood. Survivors include his sons. Jack (Brenda) Hood, Madison, AL, Jeff (Darlene) Hood, Raleigh, NC; daughters, Mary (John) Disney, Kenniwick, Washington , Cindy Lou Hood White, Lake Helen; his eight special grandchildren that have Tom Tullies' feet and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to City of Lake Helen Police Chief Keith Chester for the Lake Helen Youth Center, 493 S. Lakeview Dr., Lake Helen, FL 32744.

Diane Hernandez

October 12, 1955 - September 23, 2007

Funeral service for Diane Hernandez, 51, DeLand, who died at home Sunday, September 23, 2007, will be 11 a.m. Thursday, September 27, at Lankford Funeral Home in DeLand. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery, DeLand. Calling hours are from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hernandez was born in Coral Gables and moved here in 1995 from Miami. She taught at Deltona High School and DeLand Middle School. She had also taught at Miami Beach Junior High and worked for Dial-A-Teacher on public TV and worked for WIRN Public TV. Her first love was teaching high school. She was a member of the National Board of Certified Teachers.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph Hernandez, DeLand; parents, Ronald D. and Theresa Frank, Coral Gables; sisters, Robin Davidson-Conti and husband, Maximo, Miami, and Maureen Davidson and fiance, James Boland, DeLand; nieces and nephews, Ashley Nicole Conti and Daniel Nicholas Conti, and Natalie, Angel and Bryan Hernandez.

Gladelle Caldwell

September 28, 1911 - September 22, 2007

Gladelle Caldwell, 95, DeLand, died Sat., September 22, 2007, at Ridgecrest Manor in DeLand. Mrs. Caldwell was born in Cottage Grove, TN and moved here 58 years ago from Paris, TN. She worked as a sales clerk for Clark's Furniture in DeLand for 15 years before retiring at the age of 80. She was an accomplished pianist and her hobbies were sewing and gardening. During her retirement, she enjoyed participating in her grandchldren's lives.

Survivors include her son, James (Sally) Caldwell, Mayfield Heights, Ohio; daughters, Jan (John) Ford, DeLand and Linda (Cliff) Houellemont, Rockledge; seven grandchildren, including Kelley (Andy) Grose and Justin Caldwell Ford and three great-grandchildren.

Corey A. Wheeler

May 29, 1990 - September 20, 2007

Funeral service for Corey A. Wheeler, 17, DeLand, who died Thursday, September 20, 2007, at Shand's Hospital, Gainesville, will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 25, at the Lighthouse Christian Church, with Pastor Richard Sapp officiating. Interment will follow at Hollywood Cemetery, Orange City. Calling hours will be Monday, September 24, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Lankford Funeral Home, DeLand.

Corey was born in Springfield, Ohio, and moved to this area 14 years ago from his birthplace. He was a student at the Lighthouse Christian Academy in DeLand and was a member of the Lighthouse Christian Church, DeLand.

He is survived by his father, Mark Wheeler, Orange City; mother, Angela Wheeler, DeLand; brother, Kyle Wheeler, Orange City; maternal grandparents, Monty and Phyllis Hall, DeLand; and paternal grandmother, Myrna French, Springfield. Cousins, Trisha Blevins, Tiffany Blevins, Christalynn Brink, Samantha Brink, Sarah Brink, Jimmie LaBarre and Joey LaBarre; aunts and uncles, Taresa and Terry Brink and Randall and Clarissa Amundson and many great-aunts and uncles.

Lovett P. Clark

May 2, 1927 - September 15, 2007

Lovett P. Clark, 80, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 15, 2007, at his home in DeLand surrounded by his wife and children. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Wilson Clark, and his four loving children, Vikki Maman and her husband, David; son, Perry Clark; daughter, Cindy Geragosian and her husband, Mark; and son, Tony Clark and his wife, Melissa. He is survived by five wonderful grandchildren, Tony Clark II, Mark Clark, Scott Maman, Corey Maman, and Max Geragosian; and five great-grandchildren. He has six surviving siblings, brothers, Jimmy and Bobby Clarke, Augusta, GA, brother, Paul Clarke, Millen, GA; sisters, Sallie Delaigle and Gladys McCafferty, Waynesboro, GA, and sister, Mary Godbee, Girard, GA.

Lovett was born in Burke County, GA, on May 2, 1927. He was a U.S. Army paratrooper and veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was an ordained Baptist deacon and an usher and faithful member of Stetson Baptist Church in DeLand for 35 years and lived his faith in his daily life. He was active in church ministries and was a devoted visitor at local hospitals and nursing homes. He was a master electrician who supervised commercial and industrial construction projects over the past 50 years in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The last 12 years of his career he was employed by Calkins Electric in DeLand.

Lovett loved cooking, gardening, was an avid reader, and a staunch Georgia Bulldog fan. He loved jokes and always brought a smile to brighten the daily lives of others. An unselfish man, he devoted his life to being a compassionate Christian and to the service of others.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 19, at 11 a.m. at Stetson Baptist Church with Pastor Reggie May officiating. Viewing will be Tuesday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Lankford Funeral Home in DeLand. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery in DeLand. The DeLand VFW will provide military honors at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Stetson Baptist Church Building Fund, 1025 W. Minnesota Ave., DeLand, FL 32720, The American Heart Assoc., 555 W. Granada Blvd., Suite A-1, Ormond Beach, FL 32174, or Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.

Virginia S. Wilson

July 1, 1917 - September 11, 2007

Virginia S. Wilson, 90, West Lake Drive, Orange City, died September 11, 2007 at Oakwood Garden of DeLand. Virginia was born in West Rupert, VT and moved to this area in 1978 from there. Virginia will be remembered during the regular worship service at Calvary Baptist Church on Sunday, September 16, at 11 a.m. She loved to scooter with her husband, cook and bake for her family and writing poetry.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Clifford Wilson, Orange City; daughters, Melodie Robinson, DeLand, Sue Ellen Jolly, East Arlington, VT, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Maralie Wilson.

Mary B. Heavner

March 14, 1936 - September 9, 2007

Funeral service for Mary B. Heavner, 71, Lexington Road, DeLand, who died Sunday, September 9, 2007, at Florida Hospital DeLand, will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 12, at Lankford Funeral Home, DeLand, with Pastor Art Wurtz officiating. Calling hours are from 12 noon until service time. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery.

Mrs. Heavner was born in Henderson, NC and came here in 1974 from Jacksonville Beach. Survivors include her husband of 48 years, James Robert Heavner, DeLand; sons, James R. Heavner Jr., Weatogue, CT and Tom Heavner, DeLand; brothers, Jim Brafford and Dick Brafford, both of Henderson and three grandchildren.

Memorial donations suggested to American Heart Association, 555 W. Granada Blvd., Ste. A-1, Ormond Beach, FL 32174.

Deborah Honeycut

June 24, 1951 - September 8, 2007

Funeral service for Deborah Honeycut, 56, South Blue Lake Avenue, DeLand, who passed away Saturday, September 8, 2007 at her residence, will be 6:00 p.m. at Stetson Baptist Church of DeLand on Tuesday, September 11, 2007. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Rockwood, TN. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until service time at the church on Tuesday.

Mrs. Honeycut was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and moved to this area in 1984 from Rockwood, Tennessee. She was a teacher with DeLand High School and previously at Deltona Jr. High.

Survivors include her husband, Gordon Honeycut, DeLand; daughter, Stephanie Harper, Ormond Beach; sister, Kathy Sanderson, Clinton, Tennessee; and brothers, David Howard, Johnson City, Tennessee, Steve Howard, Elizabethton, Tennessee and John Howard, Cross Plains, Tennessee.

Memorial donations may be made to Stetson Baptist Church Building Fund, 1025 W. Minn. Ave., DeLand, FL 32720.

Lina B. Schlenk

November 7, 1935 - September 7, 2007

Lina B. Schlenk, 71, of East Graves Avenue, a real estate agent for Bill Gould Agency, died Friday at Deltona Healthcare. Mrs. Schlenk was born in Springfield, Ill., and came here in 1972. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Orange City. She enjoyed traveling in her motorhome.

Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Bernard; two sons, Henry Schlenk, Orange City, and Robert Sigler, Goodwin, NC; a daughter, Diane Lemoine, DeLand; two sisters, Mary Isaac and Virginia Taylor, both of Springfield; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Ann Marie Wheeler

September 7, 1915 - September 7, 2007

Ann Marie Wheeler, 92, of Chipola Avenue, a retired secretary to the president of the University of Pittsburgh for 10 years, died Friday at Woodland Towers. Mrs. Wheeler was born in Braddock, PA and moved here in 2001 from Fort Lauderdale. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church. No known immediate relatives survive.

Eugene Wesley Wilkins, Sr.

February 16, 1929 - September 3, 2007

Funeral service for Eugene Wesley Wilkins Sr., 78, Reyes Road, DeLand, who died September 3, 2007, at Florida Hospital DeLand, will be 11 a.m. Friday, September 7, at Stetson Baptist Church, 1025 W. Minnesota Ave., DeLand, with Pastor Reggie May officiating. Burial will be at DeLand Memorial Gardens. Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. until service time.

Mr. Wilkins was born in Nansemond, VA and moved to this area in 1959 from Suffolk, VA. He was retired assistant director of the physical plant after 30 years with Stetson University. He was a member of Stetson Baptist Church where he was on the building committee, taught Sunday school, sang in the adult choir, the Voice of Victory Choir, and was a former deacon.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Betty Wilkins, DeLand; sons, Eugene (Chip) Wilkins, Jacksonville; daughter, Susan and Lloyd Joiner, DeLand; brother, Fred Wilkins, Suffolk, VA and granddaughter, Ginny Joiner, DeLand. He was preceded in death by his sister, Doris Barnes.
