JOHN ANDREWS, MYRA ANDREWS AND BRANDI ANDREWS
John Andrews, 43, and his wife, the Rev. Myra Andrews, 41, of Vernon, passed away Sunday May 27, 2001, on Highway 79 Ebro, from injuries received in an automobile accident. Their daughter, Brandi, 9, died Memorial Day May 28. Funeral services for John, the Rev. Myra and Brandi will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church, 829 Hamilton Ave., Panama City with Bishop John Adams, the Rev. O.C. Williams and presiding Elder Joseph Sanchez officiating. Interment will follow in St. Luke Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Vernon. The remains will be in state at the church two hours prior to services. John was a native of Walton County, a 1976 graduate of Walton High School and a longtime resident of Vernon. He was employed with Anderson Columbia as a bridge superintendent, served as superintendent of the church school and a trustee of Mt. Zion A.ME. Church, where the Rev. Myra was the pastor, in Panama City. The Rev. Myra was a native of Washington County, Vernon, Fla., a 1977 graduate of Vernon High School, earned an associate degree in communication from Gulf Coast College May 3, 2001, and was employed as a productive administrative assistant with F.D.O.T., Chipley. John and Myra were proprietors of J & M Construction and partners in Inspiration Gospel Music, P.C. Brandi was promoted to the third grade V.E.S. and received a top Accelerated Reader's Award and other achievement awards. Survivors include their son and brother, Brandon Andrews of Vernon; Myra's parents, Thomas and Pearlie Edwards of Vernon; John's parents, Jesse and Nannie Andrews of Red Bay; grandparents, Jessie and Rosie Edwards of Ebro; step-grandmother, Videll Bland; P.C. siblings: Kenneth (Carol) Edwards, Keith (Michelle) Edwards of Vernon, Tracy Edwards of Tampa, Trevor Edwards of Panama City, Wesley (Jersey) Andrews, Cornilla (Carl) Hogans all of Red Bay, Donnie (Sandra) Andrews, Thelma Durham both of Defuniak Springs, Shirley Andrews of Crestview, Harry (Carolyn) Andrews of Caryville, Juanita King of Panama City, Jesse (Tina) Andrews Jr. of Sacramento, Calif., Donald (Rose) Andrews of Deland, Keith (Pat) Andrews of Fort Bragg, N.C., and Alnetta Hogan of Wisconsin and many other relatives and friends. The remains will lie in state in Cooper Funeral Home Chapel from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today in Chipley and from 5 to 8 p.m. today in Vernon High School Gym with Cooper Funeral Home directing.

SAM BARBARIAN
Mr. Sam Barbarian, age 76, of 3530 Eagle Lane, Panama City, Fla., passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in a local hospital. He was raised in Bay County since he was nine years old. Mr. Barbarian was a member of the Springfield Community Church, member of the Ira Lindsey Masonic Lodge, served 23 years with the US Navy and worked on Oil Supply Boats. Mr. Barbarian is survived by his wife, Lois Barbarian of Panama City, FL.; two daughters, Angela Saige, and Samantha Barbarian both of Panama City; three granddaughters: Allison Flynn of Panama City, Christina Flynn and Jacqueline Flynn both of Fort Walton Beach; one great-great granddaughter, Shelby Brock of Panama City.; one sister, Elizabeth Stephens of Alford; ten nieces; seven nephews; seventeen great-nieces; seven great-nephews; and one sister-in-law. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, June 1, at Springfield Community Church with the Rev. Warren Wright officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery with Full military Honors conducted by the US Navy, and Masonic graveside rites conducted by the Ira Lindsey Lodge. The Masonic Lodge will open one hour before service time. The family will receive friends at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Thursday, May 31, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

JEWEL BOYETT
Mrs. Jewel Boyett, age 69, of 420 Harlem Ave., Panama City, Fla., died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at her home. She had been a resident of the area for 55 years, moving here from Laurel Hill, Fla. Mrs. Boyett was a homemaker and a member of Springfield Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Edward Boyett, of Panama City; a daughter, Norma Jean Mount of Fountain; four grandchildren: Tonia Thomas, James Hendrix, Jeremy Farmer, and Melissa Boyett; four great-grandchildren; and cousins: Mark White, Lonnie White, Freddy White, and Jr. White. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Lois Davis; and a son, Tommy Boyett. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Everage officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Asked to serve as active pallbearers are: James Hendrix, Jeremy Farmer, Lee French, Jimmy Newton, Earl Newton, and Roger Newton. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, June 1, from 6 to 8 p.m.

MR. ROBERT L. PIERSON, JR.
Mr. Robert L. Pierson Jr., 40, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, in the Baylor Medical Center in Irving, Texas. Robert L. Pierson Jr. was born on Oct. 22, 1960, to Doris Russell and the Rev. Robert L. Pierson Sr. at Bay Memorial Hospital in Panama City. Robert L. Pierson Jr. was known by many of his friends and loved ones as "R.J." (Robert Jr.) R.J. attended school in both Panama City and Salinas, Calif., throughout his adolescent, teen and early adulthood. He received his high school diploma from Salinas High School, and thereafter attended Hartnell College in Salinas, Calif. R.J. was united in Holy Matrimony to Gwendolyn Williams, in Salinas, Calif., and to this union three children were born. R.J. returned to Panama City in 1986 and resided here until 1997. He relocated his residence to lrving, Texas in 1997, and was employed as an AGM, Assistant General Manager for the Jiffy Lube Company until his death. R.J. battled with a debilitating disease since the age of 15. In spite of his prolonged illness, he focused on the fullness of life, endeavoring to pursue life as best he could. He was a likable character, full of whit and humor. R.J. leaves to mourn his death one son, Gabriel Pierson; two daughters, Arrielle Pierson and Cherelle Pierson; and his former wife, Gwendolyn O'Connor, all residing in New Orleans, La.; his father, the Rev. Robert L. (Georgia) Pierson Sr. of Panama City; his mother Doris Layfield of Columbus, Ga.; his grandmother, Dorothy "Momma Dot" Harris of Panama City; one brother, Ravon Armand of Oakland, Calif.; four sisters: Sandra (Sidney) Vernon of Ocala, Janine Pierson-Gray of Fallon, Nev.; Pam Gentry and Sandra Estell of Columbus, Ga.; three step brothers: Tyrone Franklin of San Jose, Calif., Malik Franklin of Emeryville, Calif., and Sekou Franklin of Washington DC; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and well wishers.Homegoing services will be held Saturday, June 2, at 11 a.m. in New Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. James Bush officiating. Public visitation will begin at the funeral home this afternoon from 1 to 8 p.m. The remains will lie in state for one hour prior to services at the church. The family will receive friends at the home of his father, the Rev. and Mrs. Robert Gwendolyn Pierson, 1703 East 9th Street.

Mr. David Stewart Mannis, 24, of Panama City, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at his residence. Born in Charlottesville, Va., he had been a resident of Bay County since 1978. Mr. Mannis was a bird caretaker employed by Gulf Coast Exotic Birds. He was also a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church and a 1995 graduate of A. Crawford Mosley High School. Mr. Mannis is survived by his parents, Joe and Carolyn Mannis of Panama City; sister, Suzanne Mannis; maternal grandmother, Bonnie Hoskins of Strawberry Plain, Tenn.; paternal grandmother, Virgnia Mannis of Knowville, Tenn; three uncles: David Hoskins and wife Sheila, Chuck Hoskins, and Norman Hoskins; five aunts: Betty Ann McMillan and husband Walter, Peggy Grooms and husband Ed, Joyce Cooper and husband Ray, Debbie Hoskins and fiancee Mark and Andria Jordon and husband Brice. Funeral services for Mr. Mannis will be conducted Saturday, June 2, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Andrews United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ed Britton officiating. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations to the building fund at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in memory of David Mannis. David will be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor and his enjoyment for life and his family.

MR. DANIEL RUDOLPH SMITH
Daniel (Danny) Rudolph Smith went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 25, 2001. He was born in Panama City, Fla. He was born to the late Deacon Eddie Smith and Sister Verdell McCoy. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eddie Smith Jr. and his father Eddie Smith Sr. He is survived by a loving mother, Sister Verdell McCoy; one son, Daniel (Tracie) Smith II of Miami; five loving daughters: Maria (Eddie) Weaver, Vivian Abrams both of Panama City, Vanessa (Jimmy) Jackson, Keva Smith and Susanne (Ron) Nolan all of Miami; six brothers: John (Vivian) Smith and Terry R. Smith of Miami, Pete (Rena) Smith, Charlie J. Smith of Panama City, Arthuree (Cho) Smith of Radcliff, Ky., and Bill McCoy of Pensacola; four sisters: Annie Mae of Fairfield, Calif., Betty E. Hicks of Miami, Barbara A. (Willie) Benniefield of Brandon, Fla., and Jackie Green of Panama City; nineteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two special uncles, Thomas (Sung) Owens and Joe (Elizabeth) Owens; four step-sisters: Lula (the Rev. Jerome) Williams, Patricia, Bobbie and Lucy; two step-brothers, Major and Maple McCoy and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held Saturday, June 2, at 2 p.m. in Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev. Frank Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Public visitation will begin this afternoon at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church. The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, Mrs. Verdell McCoy of 909 East 11th Court.

J.B. BENSON
Mr. J.B. Benson of Chipley passed away. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County where he was a postal employee for 42 years prior to his retirement. Mr. Benson was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Annie Perle Benson. He is survived by one son, John Benson of Panama City and one sister Helen Neath of Concord, Ga. Nothing in his life gave Mr. Benson more joy than his church, First Baptist Church of Chipley, where he served over the years as Sunday school superintendent, a deacon and his greatest accomplishment, helping the congregation construct the new church as Chairman of the Building Committee. Mr. Benson served his country during World War II as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army stationed in San Francisco. He was an avid fisherman and in his later years was accompanied by his dear friend J.C. (Junior) Spivey. Graveside services will be conducted Sunday, June 3, at 2 p.m. at Glenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Clinton Howell officiating. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to First Baptist Church of Chipley. The family would like to extend a special note of gratitude to Dr. James Clemmons and Hospice of Northwest Florida for their care and concern for Mr. Benson during his final illness.

William H. (Bill) Carr, age 80, of Port St. Joe, Fla., died Thursday, May 31, 2001 at Gulf Coast Medical Center after an extended illness. Graveside services will be held on Sunday, June 3, at 4 p.m. EDT, with the Rev. David Fernandez officiating. He will lie in state at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Mayor Frank H. and Minnie Lee Carr of Tuskegee, Ala. and his wife, Marjorie Costin Carr. He is survived by his daughter Carolyn Phinizy, Tallahassee; son and daughter-in-law, William Carr Jr . (Billy) and Lynne of Port St. Joe; grandson, William Carr III ( Trey) and wife Dana of Washington, D.C.; granddaughters, Mandy Phinizy of Tallahassee and Chellsey O'Neill of Port St. Joe; sister, Frances Carr Parker, Montgomery, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews. The family will be at the home of his son, William H. (Billy) Carr, 204 Gautier Memorial Way, Port St. Joe. Those who wish may make a donation to their favorite charity.

VERA PHYLLIS DENNIS
Vera Phyllis Dennis, 81, of Lakeland, Fla., died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in a Lakeland hospital. She had been a resident of Bay County since 1942, moving to Tallahassee five years ago and then to Lakeland three years ago. She was a former member of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Dennis was preceded in death by her husband, Durwood Allen Dennis; one sister, and a granddaughter. She is survived by four daughters, Shirley Baur, Katie Bedford both of Tallahassee, Sandra Serletic of Lakeland, Mary M. Segler of Panama City; two sons, Duane A. Dennis of Valrico, Fla., and Roy C. Dennis of Melbourne, Fla., 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be held today at 12 p.m., in Evergreen Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Paul Donaldson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 11 to 11:45 a.m. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons: Rob Baur, Craig Baur, Don Dennis, Adam Dennis, Buddy Barlowe, Ben Beer and Michael Stewart.
