Ruth Kathryn Buzzard Squires

June 21, 1926 - December 26, 2005

A memorial service for Ruth Kathryn Squires, who went peacefuly into rest December 26, 2005, after a long illness, will be held in her honor at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 8, 2006, at Lankford Funeral Home, DeLand, with Ed Flowers officiating.

She was a faithful member of God's Church and will be missed by all friends and brethren.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, two beloved children; son, Brian Squires (Marsha); and daughter, Robin Van Amburg (David); three sisters, Dorothy Mendelsohn (Randal), Margie Wood (Joe) and Joanie Barton (Fred); five grandchildren, Jennifer Buchanan, Christopher Squires (Leslie), Joshua Squires, Matthew Squires, Fahren Buchanan; and one great-grandson, Gavin Freebersyser.

Mildred H. Swindle

April 24, 1922 - December 25, 2005

Funeral service for Mildred H. Swindle, 83, who died Sunday, December 25, 2005, at Florida Hospital DeLand, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, December 29, in the chapel of Lankford Funeral Home. Burial will be at Walker Memorial Gardens, Jasper, AL. Mrs. Swindle was born in Walker County, AL and moved from there to this area in 1963. Mrs. Swindle and her husband, William, owned and operated DeLand Auto Parts for many years.

She is survived by her husband, William S. Swindle, DeLand; and her brother, William H. Hogsten of Baltimore, MD.

Orey W. Crippen

January 23, 1924 - December 25, 2005

Funeral service for Orey W. Crippen, 81, East New Hampshire Avenue, DeLand, who died Sunday, December 25, 2005, at his residence, will be held 2 p.m. Friday, December 30, at Lankford Funeral Homes & Crematory with the Rev. Michael Fronk officiating. Burial will be Friday at DeLand Memorial Gardens. Calling hours will be Thursday, December 29, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Lankford Funeral Homes & Cremetory, 220 E. New York Ave., DeLand.

Mr. Crippen was born in Troy, PA and moved to this area in 1948 from Miami. He operated and displayed small engines and tractors for the Volusia County Fair for over 30 years. He owned and operated O's Small Engine Repair, DeLand, for over 30 years as well. He served on the board of the Volusia County Fair Association and he was past president of the DeLeon Springs Lions Club. Mr. Crippen was one of the first members of the Florida Flywheelers and a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge, DeLand.

One of Mr. Crippen's last requests was to be well enough to attend the Volusia County Fair this past October, and 55 friends led a parade of tractors through the fair in his honor. For years he was a salesman for Sam J. Rhodes, a wholesale distributor for candy, and his route covered West Volusia from Cassadaga to Georgetown.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Crippen. He is survived by his son, Bill and Gail Crippen of Orange City; daughter, Joy Crippen-Primack and Sandy Primack of Deltona; three brothers, George Osmer Crippen of Orange City, Crieg Crippen of Washington , DC and Wayne Bement of Dundee; sister, Zelma Dierstein of DeLand; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his significant other, Deemy DeSantis, and her sons, David and Eddie.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.

Bobby Neal Sherrill

February 12, 1924 - December 24, 2005

Bobby Neal Sherrill, 81, of South Ridgewood Avenue, a retired assistant supervisor at Florida Power and Light, passed away Saturday, December 24, at Florida Hospital DeLand.

Mr. Sherrill, an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, was born in Chattanooga, TN. He moved to this area from Miami in 2005.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Willa; four sons, Barry of Atlanta, George of Miami, and Tim and Dennis, both of Palm Bay; a brother, Gene of Chattanooga and four grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lottie Moon Fund at Stetson Baptist Church, 1025 W. Minnesota Avenue, DeLand, FL 32720.

Robert B. Norlander

April 12, 1937 - December 24, 2005

Robert B. Norlander, 68, passed away Saturday, December 24, at Arbor Village Rehab & Nursing Center, in Wildwood, FL. He was born in Schenectady, NY and lived in NY, NJ, CT, PA and NC before retiring to The Villages, FL in 1998.

Mr. Norlander graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1955 and the Cornell University Hotel School in 1959. After serving 3 years in Army Intelligence in Sturttgart, Germany, he designed restaurant kitchens until opening his own business in the home building industry.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Jane H. Norlander of Picciola Island, FL; sister, Anne Baldwin of Syracuse, NY; step-sister, Peggy Ricketts of Bellevue, WA; step-brother, Joseph L. Burnham of Claremore, OK and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Eric Norlander.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to The National Parkinson's Foundation, 1501 NW 9th Ave., Bob Hope Road, Miami, FL 33136-1494, Attn: Mary Ann Sprinkle.

The family will hold a private memorial service at Vale Cemetary, Schenectady, NY at a later date.

Jack R. Harris

February 21, 1944 - December 23, 2005

Funeral service for Jack R. Harris, 61, North Kempler Road, DeLand, who died died Friday, December 23, 2005, at his home, will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 28, at the Church Of The Holy Presence. Father Robert Anderson will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 27, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Lankford Funeral Homes & Crematory, 220 E. New York Ave.

Mr. Harris was born in Blackshear, GA and moved from there to this area in 1981. He was an architectural sheetmetal worker for 33 years and a member of the Architectural Sheetmetal Workers Local 15 of Central Florida.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Sauri, DeLand; son, Toby R. Harris of Statesboro, GA; daughters, Christie H. Harris of Waycross, GA, Kim J. Bazemore of Brighton, CO, Michelle M. Ostermann of DeLand, Minette Marcial of Orlando; sisters, Joyce H. Hendry of Blackshear, GA, Jeann Westberry of Thomason, GA, Sandra F. Murray, Waycross of GA; grandsons, David, Michael, Chad, Joshua, Joseph M., Joseph L., Brooks, Jacob and Elijah; granddaughter, Margo; and great-grandson, Seth.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler Building Fund, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.

Constance Herman

November 13, 1958 - December 22, 2005

Constance Herman, 55, of Evergreen Terrace, a pharmacy technician for CVS, DeLand, died Thursday at Munroe Regional Medical Center, Ocala. Mrs. Herman was born in Lawrence, Mass., and moved to this area in 1969 from Andover, Mass.

Survivors include a son, Corey of DeLand and three brothers, Chris Giaimo of DeLand, Michael Giaimo of Otto, NC and Wayne Giaimo of Salt Springs. Memorial donations may be made to the First Assembly of God, 1500 E. International Speedway Blvd., DeLand, FL 32724.

Frances Alexander "Alex" Kearney

February 15, 1939 - December 19, 2005

Memorial service for Alex Kearney, 66, DeLand, who died Monday, December 19, 2005, at Ridgecrest Manor, will be 7 p.m. Friday, December 23 at the Chapel of Lankford Funeral Home, 220 East New York Avenue. Dr. Joseph Arthur of the First United Methodist Church will be officiating. Interment will be later at Gilpan Manor Cemetery in Elkton, MD.

Mr. Kearney was born in Philadelphia, PA and moved to this area from Phoenix, Arizona in 1998. He was a member of the Packard Club and loved old cars. He raised Appaloosa show horses and was a Grand Champion Winner. He owned and operated the Kearney Wall Covering in Phoenix, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his sister, June Anne Kearney. Survivors include his sisters, Mary S. Kremer and Carol Trone of DeLand and Jane McDonald, Elkton, MD and brother, George W. Kearney of DeLand.

The family suggests donations be made to the Outreach Community Care, North Frederick Ave, Daytona Beach, FL 32114 or to the AIDS Coalition, 1216 Ridgewood Ave., Holly Hill, FL 32116.

Albert H. Gaede

March 3, 1912 - December 16, 2005

Albert H. Gaede, 93, of Liberty Court, who retired as the owner and manager of Florida Home Gas Co. after 25 years of service with offices in DeLand, Sanford and St. Augustine, died Friday at Ridgecrest Manor. Born in Pittsburgh, Mr. Gaede, an Air Force veteran of World War II, came here in 1948 from Savannah, GA.

Mr. Gaede attended St. Barnabas Episcopal Church and was a member of Volusia County Charter Study Commission, the Volusia County Personnel Board and the West Volusia Board of Realtors. He was a 54-year member of the Lake Beresford Yacht Club, a 57-year member of the DeLand Rotary Club and was a past president of both the Florida Manufactured and the Florida Natural Gas Associations. He was also the founding director of the DeLand State Bank & Trust and past director of the DeLand Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Gaede graduated from Columbia University. He was a real estate broker and commercial appraiser with Don Page Agency for nine years.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary, a son, Reed of Orlando and a brother, David of Dayton, Ohio. Memorial donations may be made to St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 319 W. Wisconsin Avenue, DeLand, FL 32720.

Dorothy R. Clifton
July 27, 1908 - December 16, 2005

Dorothy R. Clifton, 97, of DeLand, a resident since 1921, died Friday at Florida Hospital DeLand. Mrs. Clifton, a homemaker, was born in East Albany, GA and moved to this area from Albany.

Survivors include a son, Lonnie and a brother, Carl Reynolds, both of DeLand; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
