EVELYN STONE CRUCE
Wherefore he saith, AWAKE THOU THAT SLEEPEST, AND ARISE FROM THE DEAD, AND CHRIST SHALL GIVE THEE LIGHT Ephesians 5:15 ... Evelyn S. Cruce made her heavenly journey home in the company of angels on Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at 2:38 p.m. She was a woman of faith whose relationship with God served as a primary force in her life. The underlined passages and worn pages of her several bibles tell the story of time spent with her Lord. During her lifetime she was a member of and attended both First Baptist Church and St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. She was a loyal member of the Faithful Servant Sunday school class at the First Baptist Church; and an active participant in weekly Bible study group. Only in the last three years did the vicissitudes of aging limit her attendance and involvement. Evelyn was born on Oct. 31, 1910, in Panama City and lived the majority of her life here. She never stopped being awed by the changes she witnessed and experienced as Bay County grew and developed. "I never thought I'd see Panama City like this," was a frequent comment. She graduated from Bay High School in 1928 and attended Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee. She was well known and loved in this community, often bringing joy and laughter wherever she went. She was blessed with knowing how to enjoy and appreciate the gift of life and could often be heard exclaiming, "I've had a good life." Her heart was big enough to embrace people from all walks of life and generous enough to share with those less fortunate. We rejoice in her new life eternal, yet mourn the loss of our mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband James Vernon Cruce. Memories will keep her close to all her family which includes one son, Walter Bascome Hobbs III and wife Cheryl; two daughters, Sandra Hobbs Pisani and husband Vincent, and Georgia Ann Puckett; one niece, Roslyn Chandler; four grandchildren, Renee' Gherity Chandler, Walter Bascome Hobbs IV, Cindy Ann Hobbs, Melinda Renee' Hobbs; three great-grandchildren, Alexandra Trieste Chandler, Claire Evelyn Hobbs, Greta Lee Hobbs, Lucie Agnes Evelyn Gaw. The caregivers who so lovingly assisted her these past several years are Lois Barbarian, Coaleen Booth, Mabel Hart, Donna Petro and Jan Dutka. Also, two dear friends, Norma James and Phyllis Jencks brought love, good cheer and daily encouragement. The celebration to honor the life of Evelyn and rejoice in her eternal glory will be held in St. Andrews Episcopal Church today, Aug. 30, 2001, at 2 p.m. with Father Denis Baum officiating. The reception will be held in the parish hall immediately following the services. Graveside service will be held at 7 a.m. Friday in the Greenwood Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be the Faithful Servants Sunday school class and the members of Evelyn's weekly Bible study group. Those desiring may make a donation to the Anchorage Children's Home in memory of Evelyn Cruce.
