Arthur H. Stolba

January 26, 1923 - November 14, 2005

Funeral service for Arthur H. Stolba, 82, of S. Spring Garden Avenue, DeLand, who died Monday, November 14, 2005, will be 1 p.m. Friday, November 18, at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave., DeLand. Calling hours will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, November 17.

Mr. Stolba was born in Queens, NY and moved here in 1960 from Sanford. He was retired as a chief petty officer, serving in World War II. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, VFW, Eagles and the AMVETS, all of DeLand. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve, Sanford.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille, and a grandson, George Shelton, Jr. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Jack Hood, DeLand; three granddaughters, Patricia Gill of Fairbanks, Alaska, Charlotte Horton of Augusta, GA and April Strunks of Piqua, Ohio and four great-grandchildren.

Sarah Mae McAfee

September 30, 1913 - November 12, 2005

Graveside service for Sarah Mae McAfee, 92, West Euclid Avenue, DeLand, who died Saturday, November 12, 2005, at University Center West, DeLand, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, November 17, at the Community Cemetery in DeLand.

Mrs. McAfee was born in Fort Valley, GA. She was a homemaker and a member of the Antioch Free Will Church, DeLand. Survivors include her cousin, Gladys White, Waycross, GA and her many friends and church members.

Woodrow H. Miller
March 25, 1918 - November 11, 2005

Woodrow H. Miller, 87, formerly of Warwick, RI, died Friday, November 11, 2005, in DeLand, after a long illness. He worked for more than 25 years for the former New England Milk Producers Association, now known as Agrimart, serving as farmer field agent, district manager and purchasing agent.

Born in Westfield, MA, March 25, 1918, he graduated from the High School of Commerce, Springfield, MA in 1936. He attended the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts, graduating with a degree in animal husbandry.

Woody was wounded in Germany in 1945 for which he received the Purple Heart, being retired from the U.S. Army as a captain because of his wounds. He remained active in the military Officers Association of America as well as Future Farmers of America, the Rhode Island Agricultural Council and the 4H. He served as secretary-treasurer of the RI Agricultural Council from 1970 until 1979. For several years, he served as an officer in the Pine Forest Homeowners Association of Orange City, FL. He was a member of the Shawmunt Lodge F & AM, Indian Orchard, MA. Woody was active in the Foster Memorial Congregational Church in Sixteen Acres, MA, Edgewood Congregational Church, Cranston, RI and the First Congregational Chruch, Orange City. He was an avid gardener and lover of music. He was the son of George S. and Mary (Cotton) Miller. He was predeceased by his brothers, George and James, and his sister, Grace (Miller) Raymond.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley (Warwick) Miller, who resides in Orange City. He had three children, James of Fernandina Beach, Steven of Duluth, GA and Susan (Miller) Wakelin of Orange City. Woody had five grandchildren, James, John, and Alan Miller and Lisa (Wakelin) Martinez and Brent Wakelin and one great-grandchild, Kaylin Martinez.

A memorial service for Woodrow will be held at First Congregational Church in Orange City on November 26, at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell. Memorial donations may be made to First Congregational Church, 201 W. University Ave., Orange City, FL 32763.

Rev. John F. Jacobs, Jr.

May 17, 1935 - November 9, 2005

Rev. John F. Jacobs, Jr., 70, of Pompano Beach, a longtime DeLand resident, died Wednesday at home. The Rev. Jacobs was born in Freeport, NY. He earned his master's degree from the University of Florida and was a business executive in the commodities trade industry in California and Texas . He enjoyed travel, gardening, music and painting.

Survivors include a sister, Nancy Cousins of DeLand. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 111 N. Frederick Ave., Suite 100, Daytona Beach, FL 32114.

G. Kim Comeau

September 14, 1946 - November 8, 2005

G. Kim Comeau, 59, of Belkton Street, a case manager for the Volusia County jail system, died Tuesday at home. Mrs. Comeau was born in Brooklyn, NY and moved to this area in 1989 from East Stroudburg, PA. She was a lifetime member of the Daytona 200 Motorcycle Club and the American Motorcycle Association. She was also a certified addictions counselor for Mercy Hospital and the Columbia Health Care System of Orlando. Mrs. Comeau enjoyed riding motorcycles.

Survivors include her husband of 15 years, George; two sons, William Jones of Queens, NY, and Dennis Comeau of Florence, Italy; three daughters, Valerie DeMaria of Eulston County, NY, Cheryl Ypton of Woodstock, GA and Linda Ostrowski of Knoxville, TN; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Lane, Port Orange, FL 32129 or to Alcoholics Anonymous, c/o Emmaus Lutheran Church, 2500 S. Volusia Ave., Orange City, FL 32763.

Gladys E. Bromley

October 3, 1917 - November 7, 2005

Funeral service for Gladys E. Bromley, 88, Poinsettia Drive, Orange City, who died at home Monday, November 7, 2005, will be 3 p.m. Thursday, November 10, at Orange City United Methodist Church. Calling hours are from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday at Lankford Orange City Chapel.

Mrs. Bromley was born in LaColle, Canada and moved to this area in 1978 from Peru, NY. She worked as postmaster in Peru for 30 years before retiring and was a member of the Orange City Methodist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara J. Hamilton of New Salem, Mass.; stepson, Dennis Bromley of Clay, NY; stepdaughters, Margaret Kerr of Woburn, Mass., and Mary Jane Peterson of Port Huron, Michigan; sister, Doris Trudeau of Buffalo, NY; brothers, Douglas Brown of Leesburg, Ross Brown of Zephyrhills and Clifford Brown of Peru, NY; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mary C. Porter

November 26, 1915 - November 7, 2005

Mary C. Porter, 89, of Fox Run Trail, a retired clerk for the Coral Gables Library, died Monday at home. Funeral service will be at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, November 12, at St. Peters Catholic Church, DeLand. Entombment will follow at DeLand Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Porter was born in Brooklyn, NY and moved to this area in 1986 from Miami. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, the Women's Club, the Cultural Arts Center and the American Association of College Women.

Survivors include a son, Joseph of Miami; a daughter, Joan Whigham of DeLand; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Memorial donations may be made to Journey's End Animal Sanctuary, P.O. Box 220173, Glenwood, FL 32722.

William J. "Doug" Slaughter

August 21, 1912 - November 6, 2005

Funeral service for William J. "Doug" Slaughter, 93, Chipola Avenue, DeLand, who died Sunday, November 6, 2005, at Woodland Terrace Nursing Center, will be 2 p.m. Thursday, November 10, at Stetson Baptist Church, DeLand, with Dr. David Goodroe officiating. Burial will be at DeLand Memorial Gardens. Calling hours are from 1:30 p.m. until service time Thursday at the church.

Mr. Slaughter was born in Mayo and moved from there to this area in 1943. He was retired as a barber and, during World War II, worked at the boatyard in DeLand building Higgins Boats. He was a member of Stetson Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school, and belonged to the Bridge Club at Hidden Hills, DeLand.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Edna and Ed Miner of DeLand; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Memorial donations requested to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.

Vivian Lee Harris
November 5, 2005

Funeral service for Vivian Lee Harris, 90, Meadowwood Trail, DeLand, who died Saturday, November 5, 2005, at Woodland Terrace Nursing Center, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 8, at the chapel of Lankford Funeral Homes and Crematory. The Rev. Grady Snowden will officiate. Friends may call Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time.

Mrs. Harris was born in Pierson and was a lifelong resident of Volusia County. She was a member of Blake Memorial Baptist Church, the Sunshine Sunday School Class and loved to sew and do quilting. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Harris, sons, Leroy Harris, Randolph Harris and Steve Harris; and daughter, Grace Doyle.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Carlleta Corbett of DeLand; daughters by marriage, Lillian Harris of DeLand and Ann Harris of Orlando; son by marriage, Herb Corbett of DeLand; grandchildren, Roberta (Bobby) Brooks of DeLeon Springs, Patricia Joslin of DeLand, Brenda Langley of Ormond Beach, Alan Harris of Orlando; Craig Harris of Orlando, Ed Corbett of Jacksonville and Tony Corbett of Tampa; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.

Patricia Joanne Petty

July 22, 1952 - November 4, 2005

Patricia Joanne Petty, 53, of Mercers Fernery Road, an export and information systems manager for Underhill Ferneries, Barberville, died Friday at home. Mrs. Petty was born in Jacksonville and moved to this area in 1965 from Jacksonville Beach.

Survivors include her husband of 36 years, Michael; two daughters, Michelle Bullis and Marcia Bellavia, and her father, Sam Goode, Jr., all of DeLand; her mother, Virgie Goode and a sister, Phyllis Hall, both of Mansfield, MO and seven grandchildren.

Andrew Jackson "Jack" Williams

September 24, 1929 - November 1, 2005

Andrew Jackson "Jack" Williams, 76, of West Armstrong Avenue, a watchmaker and owner of a jewelry in Georgia, died Tuesday at Alliance Center for Health Care. Mr. Williams, an Army veteran of the Korean War, was born in Keysville, GA and came here in 2001 from Stockbridge, GA. He was the president for 24 years of the Watchmaker Association in Georgia.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Ann; two sons, Brian of Orange City and Andrew Jr., of McDonough, GA; a daughter, Debra Bryan of Kissimmee; a sister, Florine Beckum of Louisville, GA; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 111 N. Frederick Ave., Suite 100, Daytona Beach, FL 32114.
