Doug Allen Minix

October 22, 1965 - March 19, 2008

Memorial service for Doug Allen Minix, 42, Oak Hill, who died March 19, 2008, will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 24, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 319 West Wisconsin Avenue, DeLand, with Father W. Donald Lyon officiating. Mr. Minix was born in Atlanta, GA and moved from there to this area in 1977. He was a technician for a pharmacy/medical equipment company. Doug loved fishing and playing golf.

Survivors include his parents, Walter and Donna Minix, Edgewater; one brother, Walt Minix, III, Oak Hill; and his beloved companion, Milo, a Welsh Corgi.

Antoine M. "Tony" George

September 21, 1925 - March 20, 2008

Memorial service for Antoine M. "Tony" George, 82, DeLand, who died March 20, 2008, at Woodland Terrace Nursing Center, DeLand, will be 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 24, at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave., DeLand, with the Rev. Michael Fronk officiating. Family will greet friends from 11 a.m. until service time.

Mr. George was born in Castries, St. Lucia, and moved to this area in 1985 from Jacksonville, FL. He was a retired real estate broker, owning George Real Estate in Jacksonville from 1969 to 1985. He was a WWII veteren of the British Merchant Marines and a US Army veteran of the Korean War and Vietanm War. He was awarded the Bronze Star and was a Mason in Germany.

Mr. George is survived by his wife of 56 years, Trudy George of DeLand; two sons Richard (Lilis) George and Ben George, both os DeLand; two sisters, Clemence George of Miami, FL and Marie Newton of Trinidad, West Indies; two grandchildren, Christie Newman and Michelle Walker; five great granschildren, Carlee, Will, Joey, Alex and Lily.

Myrtle L. "Myrt" Pierson

August 27, 1920 - March 21, 2008

Funeral service for Myrtle L. "Myrt" Pierson, 87, DeLand, who died March 21, 2008, at Majestic Oaks At John Knox Village, Orange City, will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, at First United Methodist Church, DeLand, with the Rev. Owen Stricklin and the Rev. Michael Fronk officiating. Entombment will be at DeLand Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, March 24, at Lankford Funeral Home.

Mrs. Pierson was born in Blakley, GA and moved to this area in 1956 from Winter Park, FL. She was the owner of Mitchell Cleaners in DeLand and former owner of Blue Springs State Park, Orange City. She was a member of the DeLand Garden Club, DeLand Country Club and Lake Beresford Yacht Club. She loved making ceramics and her true love was to tell stories and gossip while working at Mitchell Cleaners.

She is survived by her son, Gordie and Lee Pierson, DeLand; daughter, Dotty and Steve Hayman, DeLand; grandchildren and spouses, Jeremy (Jessica) Hayman, Matthew (Sarah) Hayman, Patricia (John) Roberts, Jessica Pierson and great-grandchild, Mason Airhart.

Walter A. "Wally" Drumb

June 30, 1941 - March 22, 2008

Memorial service for Walter A. "Wally" Drumb, 66, DeLand, who died March 22, 2008, at his home in DeLand, will be 4 p.m. Monday, March 31, at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 East New York Ave., DeLand, with the Rev. Michael Fronk officiating.

Mr. Drumb, a lifetime resident, was a real estate appraiser with Doyle Appraisal Co. He graduated from DeLand High School in 1959, and in 1965, graduated from Stetson University with a Bachelor Degree. He was a member of the DeLand Rotary Club and Trinity United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Adelle Drumb.

Survivors include his two daughters, Dawn (Laurie) Ulmer, Sullivan's Island, SC and Nicki (Rachel Gardiner) Drumb, Orlando; brother, Jim Drumb, DeLand; grandchildren, Alex Ulmer and Rivers Ulmer; and his favorite companion, his cat named "The Goat."

Memorial donations may be made to Journey's End Animal Sanctuary, P.O. Box 220163, Glenwood, FL 32722.

Maria E. MacAdam

March 31, 1927 - March 27, 2008

Maria E. MacAdam, 80, DeLand, died March 27, 2008, at her home. She was born in La Capilla, Boyaca, Colombia, and moved to this area 40 years ago from New York. She worked as a domestic. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church were she was very active. She volunteered her bilingual help with the Volusia County School Board.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gervin MacAdam. Survivors include her niece, Rosalba Cuesta; nephews, Frank Paroulek, Edward Paroulek, several great-nieces and nephews and a great-great-niece.

Memorial service will be held at a later date.

John C. Rausch

January 1, 1918 - March 28, 2008

Funeral service for John C. Rausch, 90, Winter Garden, Fla., formerly of DeLand, who died March 28, 2008, at the home of his grandson, Ben, in Winter Garden, will be 3 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at the Lankford Funeral Home, DeLand. Interment will be held privately.

Mr. Rausch was born in Oelwein, Iowa and moved to this area in 1975 from Waterloo, Iowa. He retired as a data processing manager with John Deere for 28 years. A World War II veteran, he served in the Army Air Corps. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, the Air Force Association, the First Baptis Church of Winter Garden and a former member of the Elks.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Garvey Rausch; his son, William C. Rausch; and his son-in-law, Philip Bryant. Survivors include his three daughters, Betsy (Dale) Kelly, Winter Garden, Jacquelyn Bryant, Port Royal, SC, Susan (Mark) Blocker, DeLand and seven grandchildren, Ben (Alison) Kelly, Michael (Nichole) Kelly, Shawn (Staci) Kelly, Megan Summers, Katie Bryant, Brittany (Matthew) Levon and Amy Ruth Blocker and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Comforter, 480 W. Central Parkway, Altamonte Springs, FL 32714 or to the Collide Fund at the First Baptist Church of Winter Garden, 125 East Plant Street, Winter Garden, FL 34787.

Edna L. Witt

September 17, 1918 - March 28, 2008

Graveside service for Edna L. Witt, 89, DeLand, who died March 28, 2008, at Florida Hospital DeLand, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, at Oakdale Cemetery, DeLand, with the Rev. Carl Whidden officiating.

Mrs. Witt was born in Fletcher, NC and moved to this area in 1954. She was a dietician at Fish Memorial Hospital for 27 years. She was a member of Stetson Baptist Church and the owner of the Calico Kitchen Restaurant in DeLand.

Survivors include her two sons, C. Wayne Reid, DeLand and Robert E. Reid, DeLand; daughter, Carole Ward, DeLand; sister, Betty Ann Quinn, Spartanburg, SC; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.

Martha Faye Hartley

July 21, 1947 - March 29, 2008

Martha Faye Hartley, 60, DeLand, died Saturday, March 29, 2008, at Florida Hospital DeLand. Martha was born in Savannah, GA and was a longtime resident of this area. She was the assistant manager of Quick Clean Center in DeLand and a member of DeLand Moose Lodge.

Survivors include her son, Robert Lee Branton Jr., Jacksonville; four brothers, William Archie Tucker Jr., Macon, GA, and Lonnie Homer Tucker, Alfred Eugene Tucker and Marvin Hilton Tucker, all of DeLand; three sisters, Susie Londean Carroll and Julia Faye Tucker, both of DeLand and Donna Jackson, Murray, NC; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Gordon John Samuel Rothermel

September 4, 1916 - April 1, 2008

Memorial service for Gordon John Samuel Rothermel, 91, DeLand, who died April 1, 2008 at Florida Hospital DeLand, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, DeLand, with Father Donald Lyon officiating. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, April 4, at Lankford Funeral Home, DeLand.

Mr. Rothermel was born in Toronto, Canada, and moved to this area in 1955 from Jacksonville, FL. He worked with Southern Bell, now AT&T, for 43 years and retired as a manager. He was a World War II veteran and further served in the Army Reserve until 1958 when he retired as a Major. He was a member of the DeLand Rotary Club and the AT&T Pioneers. He was also a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Rubye "Polly" Rothermel; son, Gordon "Mac" and Dee Rothermel, New Smyrna Beach; daughter, Ann and Kim Rothermel, Deltona; sister, Dorothy Deans, Sanford; granddaughter, Karen and Pahan Ranasingha.

Brenda Elise Cherry

November 26, 1938 - April 2, 2008

Memorial service for Brenda Elise Cherry, 69, DeLand, who died April 2, 2008, at Florida Hospital DeLand, will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at Lankford Funeral Home, DeLand, with Chaplain Art Bakewell officiating. The family will greet friends from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Brenda was born in Boston, Mass., and moved to this area in 2001 from Attleboro Falls, Mass. She was a supervisor working in the Wrentham Developmental Center, Wrentham, Mass., and retired from there in 2000. She was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose #1126 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary #3959, both of DeLand. She loved riding motorcycles, shopping and, of course, her grandchildren that she lovingly referred to as her "Pies."

Survivors include her three sons, Wesley D. Cherry, Millis, Mass., William Cherry, North Attleboro, Mass., Steven Cherry, Attleboro, Mass.; daughter, Diane Dube, North Berwick, Maine; brother, Dean Albee, Deltona; two sisters, Anne Connors, Colchester, Conn., Debra Meadows, Tarzana, Calif.; and seven grandchildren, Sheriann, Kristi, Laurie, Lindsay, Billy, Christopher, Lea; and her stepson, John W. Cherry, Jr., Cape Cod, Mass.; and dear friend, Bob Benton, DeLand.

Florence Anna Balestrieri

September 21, 1906 - April 5, 2008

Memorial service for Florence Anna Balestrieri, 101, Orange City, who died Saturday, April 5, 2008, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 26 Dogwood Trail, DeBary. A reception is to follow.

Mrs. Balestrieri was born in Brooklyn, NY and moved here in 1981 from Miami. She was a salesperson in retail sales for 60 years. She was a member of the St. Ann's Catholic Church in DeBary.

She is survived by her son, Edward A. Balestrieri, Orange City; two brothers, John and Josephine Masi, Fairfield, CT, and Pat and Helen Masi, Monroe, CT; sisters-in-law, Bessie Masi and Helen Masi; nephew, Philip and Joan Rogers; and many other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Philip and Rose Masi; brothers and wives, Anthony Masi and Celia Masi Lindquist, Joseph and Ann Masi, Thomas and Arlene Masi, Nick Masi and Michael Masi; and sisters and husbands, Elizabeth and Joseph Rogers and Mildred and Joseph Salvato.
