Earl C. Neuenschwander

Memorial service for Earl C. Neuenschwander, 95, DeLand, who died peacefully at home Monday, April 7, 2008, will be 3 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave., DeLand, with the Rev. Owen Stricklin officiating.
Mr. Neuenschwander was born in Berne, Indiana
, lived in Indiana
, and later moved to Hollywood, FL, then to Cocoa, before moving to DeLand in 1975. He went to Tri-State College in Angola, IN, and graduated in 1934. He was above all an entrepreneur. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and served on the Horse Patrol with the Shriners in Cocoa.
He founded the N & W Oil Company and was later the CEO of Midwest Petroleum, both in Ft. Wayne, Indiana
. He later built homes in Indianapolis, Indiana
, through Stoneline Homes and opened Metalco, a galvanized sheet metal business in Costa Rica. Most of all he loved traveling with his wife, Elaine.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Lynn Gettle, DeLand, and Bonnie and Joseph Perri, Orlando; grandchildren, Steve Perri, Vicki Perri Lowenstein, Stacey Anson, Scott Perri, Susan Way, Craig Gettle and Elaine Perri; great-grandchildren, Adam Perri, Ken Way, Ryan Perri, Nicole Heath, Evan Perri, Jill Perri, Brian Perri, Lindsey Lowenstein, Candace Perri, Christopher Perri and Allison Perri; and great-great-grandchildren, Robby and Dalton Heath. He was predeceased by his wife, Elaine; brother, Arthur; and sisters, Mary Kay Shady and Edith Grile.
Victoria "Vicki" Lynne Lasho Wilson

Funeral service for Victoria "Vicki" Lynne Lasho Wilson, 26, DeLand, who died April 7, 2008, at Florida Hospital Orlando, will be 6 p.m. Friday, April 11 at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave., DeLand, with visitation from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.
Victoria was a preschool teacher with Westside Academy in DeLand. She loved dolphins and most of all spending time with children.
Survivors include her husband, John W. Wilson, Jr., DeLand; father and step-mother, William and Myra Lasho, Orange City; mother, Sandee Jones Lasho, Hollywood, FL; sister, Colleen Beach, Herndon, VA; stepsons, Bradley Wilson, Andy Wilson, and stepdaughter, Brianna Wilson, all of Apopka; stepsisters, Myra Willix, DeLand, Lori Dresselt, Chadbourn, NC, Penny Dresselt, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Beth Edmondson, Sebring, FL; stepbrother, Fred Dresselt, Royal Palm Beach, FL and several nieces and nephews who affectionately called her "Teetee."

Gladys Marie Artler

Memorial service for Gladys Marie Artler, 93, DeLeon Springs, who died April 11, 2008, at Florida Hospital DeLand, will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 2, at DeLeon Springs United Methodist Church, 265 Ponce DeLeon Blvd., DeLeon Springs.
Mrs. Artler was born in Evansville, IN and moved to this area in 1975 from Fort Lauderdale, FL. She was a retired bookkeeper.
Survivors include her husband of 26 years, Ralph Artler; five grandchildren, Tara Paquin, Janel Starnes, Lyn Ingram, Eve Ketchum and Eric Wicksell; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Ohse E. Davis
October 29, 1914 - April 11, 2008
Ohse E. Davis, of Veterans Memorial Parkway, Orange City, will be remembered for her work in broadening educational opportunities and amenities at all levels. Davis died April 11. She was 93. There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave. in DeLand.
Born in Larvik, Norway, Davis came to DeLand 80 years ago. She was a graduate of DeLand High School, Stetson University and Florida State University.
In 1977, Davis was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Volusia County School Board, and she remained on the board until 1986. Volusia County Elections Supervisor Ann McFall recalls Davis was a worthy opponent when she, McFall, then a Democrat, defeated her in the primary for the nomination for School Board. McFall went on to win the election.
“She was a good person,” McFall remembered. “We were both Dems. She was a very nice lady. You didn’t want to cross her. When I got off the School Board and got on the County Council, she called me a couple of times, and we worked well together.”
Her partisan loyalty was one of the most memorable features of her life, Davis’ daughter, Marianne Hansen, said. “For being such a staunch Democrat, and collecting donkeys,” Hansen said. “She had over 100 donkeys. People would go places and bring her back donkeys.” On the more serious side, however, Hansen said her mother will be best remembered for her efforts to broaden educational opportunities and improve facilities. “She was an advocate all her life. She was active all her life,” said Hansen.
In addition to her service on the Volusia County Democratic Executive Committee and in the West Volusia Women’s Democratic Club, Davis served as president of Friends of the DeLand Area Public Library, the Volusia County Educators Association, and Volusia County School Librarians, and was a chairwoman of the Classroom Teachers of Volusia County, and a director of the League of Women Voters of Volusia County.
She was also a member of the Retired Teachers, the DeLand Woman’s Club, and the Community Advisory Board for both Stetson University and Daytona Beach Community College.
During her service on the School Board, Davis was elected president of the National Federation of Urban/Suburban School Districts, an organization of superintendents and members of school boards promoting education improvements. She was a member of the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board of District 12.
While she served on the School Board, Davis supported expanded technical education for high-school students. In addition, she supported school librarians’ right to choose freely the reading materials for their schools. Not least, she pressed for alternative schools for troubled youngsters, and two such schools were established in the county. Both schools are still in operation.
While new schools were being built during her tenure on the board, Davis sought parity in facilities, namely, upgrading older schools to include more modern equipment and amenities like air conditioning.
Davis worked with Dr. Evelyn Lynn — before Lynn became a state legislator — in the advent of new methods of teaching gifted children.
“Among those who worked with her, I think she will be remembered as one of Volusia’s pioneer women activists. She was active as a woman before feminism became a movement,” said Dr. T. Wayne Bailey, a political scientist at Stetson University, and a fellow Democratic Party worker. “She was not syrupy sweet; she would tell you what she thought.” Bailey added Davis liked to sew, and she had enjoyed making neckties. “I think in my collection I still have three or four of her neckties. They are bright and celebratory,” he said.

Jack Lee White
November 24, 1922 - April 12, 2008
Jack Lee White, 85, of East Howry Avenue, died April 12, 2008, at Oaktree Healthcare Center in South Daytona. A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave. in DeLand.
Mr. White retired as a salesman for Four Roses Distillers. Born in Weirton, WV, he moved to this area three years ago from Bonita Springs. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. White is survived by his wife, Mary; four sons, David of Zanesville, Ohio, Jack Jr. of Lake Mary, Cary of McConnelsville, Ohio, and Gary of St. George, Utah; one daughter, Barbara Ann Speakman of Canal Winchester, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Victor Patrick Compe, Sr.
October 22, 1924 - April 14, 2008
Funeral service for Victor Patrick Compe, Sr., who passed away at this home on Monday, April 14, 2008, will be Saturday, April 19, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, DeLand, at 10 a.m. with Father Tom Connery officiating. Viewing will be held Friday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Lankford Funeral Home, DeLand. A reception will follow the funeral service.
Mr. Compe was born October 22, 1924, in New York City. He graduated from White Plains High School in 1942 and served his country in the Navy during World War II. He attended the University of Rochester and Cornell University and was a graduate of the Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers University. An admired and respected banker, his career spanned over 40 years during which time he worked for Scarsdale National Bank, the Bank of New York, and American Savings Bank, all in Westchester County, New York.
He married Marion Donahue, Worcester, Mass., on January 14, 1951. They lived in Elmsford, NY where they raised their six children. They retired to DeLand in 1989 with their daughter, Michelle and her husband, Richard. Always civic-minded, Vic was a member and former Lt. Governor of Kiwanis and a member of Knights of Columbus. He was a former lector at St. Peter's Parish, DeLand, and a former member of DeLand Country Club, where he served as president of the Board of Directors and the Men's Golf Association, and the Beresford Yacht Club.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marion; and his son, Victor (wife, Samantha); and, in addition to Michelle, his daughters, Jean-Marie (husband, Richard), Mandy (husband, Paul, deceased), and Lisa; and his two grandsons, Richard and Anthony. He was predeceased by his daughter, Laurie.
Those who knew Vic, knew that he was a loving husband, father and grandfather and a friend to all. He enjoyed nothing better than a good meal, a fun party, and to be surrounded by those he loved. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to The Hospice of Volusia/Flagler which was a comfort to Vic and his family in his final days.
Gloria F. Hinsch
August 26, 1926 - April 15, 2008
Funeral service for Gloria F. Hinsch, 81, DeLand, who died April 15, 2008, at her home, will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 18, at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave., DeLand, with Pastor Arthur Wuertz officiating. Burial will be at DeLand Memorial Gardens. Calling hours are from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, April 17 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hinsch was born in New York City, NY and moved to this area in 1970 from Baybille, NY. She was a real estate broker. She was a member of the Lake Beresford Yacht Club, DeLand Garden Club, DeLand County Club, past president of Spring Lakes Volunteer Fireman's Auxiliary and American Legion Post 304 in New York.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Howard H. Hinsch, DeLand. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.
