Darren Green, 40, of Austin, Texas, formerly of Vernon, died Feb. 22, 2002, in the North Austin Medical Center. He was a native of Vernon and of the Methodist faith. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke A.M.E. Church in Vernon with the Rev. Jerome Goodman officiating. Interment will follow in St. Luke Cemetery with Cooper Funeral Home directing. The remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to services. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Lizzie Green of Vernon; brothers, James Scott, Earl Scott, Horace Brown and Bobby (Donna) Green, all of Vernon, and Terry Green of Miami; sisters, Gladys Washington of Miami, Staff Sgt. Cynthia Green of Tallahassee, Beverly (Cloudie) Brown, Debra Green, Jackie Brown, all of Vernon, and JoAnn (Elvis) Sheffield of Chipley.

EARNEST MATNEY
Mr. Earnest Matney passed away at age 68 at a local hospital. He was a resident of Panama City for 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Brooksie Matney; daughters, Nancy Caldwell and her husband, Fred, Sherry Cole, Tina French and her husband, Johnny; one son, Michael Earnie Matney, all of Panama City, Rhonda Lambeth and her husband, Kenneth, of Kaufman, Texas, Patricia Roehrig and her husband, David, of Springfield, Tenn., and Tammy Matney and her husband, Sandy, of Grundy, Va.; three sisters; three brothers; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Earnest Matney Jr. Funeral services will be held at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home in Grundy, Va., at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lung or Kidney Foundation.

NORA L. MEARS
Mrs. Nora L. Mears, 94, of Blountstown, died Thursday, Feb. 28, in Panama City. Mrs. Mears was born in the old Chipola community and was a third generation family in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late William Robert Yon and Sarah Barton Yon. She was of the Seventh Day Adventist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Ervin Mears, formerly of Winter Haven, Fla.; two sons, Robert Hayes Mears, formerly of Columbus, Ga., and Houston Eugene Mears, formerly of Newport News, Va.; and one brother, Edward Yon, formerly of Altha. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Hershel Lee Mears of Blountstown, Burton C. and Martha Mears of Miramar, Fla., and Hiram Wesley Mears of Mayo; four daughters and sons-in-law, Etta Mae and Charles Parker of Blountstown, Mary Ethel McClain of Bartow, Audrey N. and Aubrey Clemmons and Barbara Ann and Carlie Gean Floyd, both of Winter Haven; one daughter-in-law, Willow Dean Mears of Columbus, Ga.; 30 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Adams Funeral Home in Blountstown with the Rev. Bob Bellman and Carl Griffin officiating. Interment will follow in Sunny Hill Cemetery near Altha. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home in Blountstown.

Funeral services for Laurence Hamilton Morton, 77, husband of Anne McKenzie Morton, 9 Sennet Drive, Greenville, S.C., who died Feb. 24, 2002, will be held today, March 1, 2002, at 3 p.m. in Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Hayes conducting the service. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Wilson Funeral Home from 2 to 3 p.m. on Friday. DONNIE OSBORNE
Mr. Donnie Osborne of Fountain died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, in Okeechobee, Fla. Born in Washington, D.C., he had been a resident of Bay County since 1971. Mr. Osborne was a truck driver. He was a member of Carlisle Baptist Church and Actzion Ministries. Mr. Osborne is survived by his wife, Cathy Osborne of Fountain; his parents, Waverly and Alma Osborne of Callaway; two sons, Jason Lee Osborne and wife, Alison, and Jeffrey Paul Osborne, both of Panama City; one daughter, Brittney Osborne of Panama City; one brother, Hank Osborne and wife, Effie, of Port Royal, Va.; one sister, Glenda Sue Purvis and husband, Jay, of Panama City; one grandson, Bryson Lee Osborne; nephews and nieces, Jeremy Osborne, Jessica Chewning, Carol Ann Osborne, Jordanne Osborne and Jewel Osborne; and stepdaughter, Cress; and stepgrandchildren, Savannah and Elijah. Funeral services for Mr. Osborne will be conducted Saturday, March 2, 2002, at 11 a.m. in Southerland Family Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Kelly Dickson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The following gentlemen will serve as active pallbearers: Duane Kangus, Nick Bunce, Delbert McKinney, Ryan McElrath, Michael Shane Hinson and Randy Harmon The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. CARLOS L. OWEN
Mr. Carlos L. Owen, 82, of Panama City, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Princeton Hospital in Birmingham, Ala. He had been a resident of the area since 1983, coming here from Troy, Ala. He loved gardening, fishing, and the outdoors. Mr. Owen served his country in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II, where he spent three years in the Middle East. He was a retired educator, teaching for 30 years in the Alabama school system. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lynn Haven. He was also very active in the church, having served as deacon and Sunday school superintendent in Chilton County, Ala. Mr. Owen was a member of the Lions Club and Civitan Club in Troy, Ala. Mr. Owen is survived by his wife of 60 years, Annie H. Owen of Panama City; children, Carol Owen and her husband, Michael Williams, of Peachtree City, Ga., Jo Langston and her husband, John, of Panama City, Jimmy Owen of Maplesville, Ala., and Don R. Owen and his wife, Pam, of Lynn Haven; grandchildren, Chris and Jason Scott, Kevin, Drew, and Kelsey Owen; a stepgranddaughter, Melissa Boone; a sister, Evelyn Conway of Thorsby, Ala.; a niece, Martha Atkinson of Alabaster, Ala.; and a nephew, David Conway of Thorsby, Ala. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hannon and Odie Owen; and a sister, Willie Nell Haggard. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Pennington officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories. LAURA MICHELLE PADGETT
We were graced with the presence of our dear Laura, for 23 years before her return to heaven on Feb. 26, 2002. Born Aug. 12, 1978, in Panama City, where she attended and graduated from Bay High School in 1997. Laura had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. She enjoyed good books, shopping, and playing with her nieces and nephew. Laura constantly thought of others' needs and was often found providing service for family and friends. While working at Northside Elementary School, she made many lifelong friends and touched everyone she came in contact with. Laura is loved and survived by her parents, Randall and Johanna Padgett; sister, Christina Dean and husband, Mike; nieces, Justine, Alexis; nephew, Trent; grandparents, Jerome and Maurice Padgett; Aunt Poppy and Uncle Don Whisman; grandmother, Winnie Owens; Aunt Sandra and Uncle Bill Hewett, Uncle John D. and Aunt Mildred Owens, Uncle Melvin and Aunt Cindy, Uncle Robert and Aunt Peggy, Uncle Glenn and Aunt Mary; a special friend, Jennifer Frost; and many cousins, and other beloved friends and teachers. The family will receive friends this evening, March 1, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 3140 State Ave., Panama City. A celebration of Laura's life will be held Saturday morning, March 2, at 10 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, with interment directly following at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Phillip Lee Paris, 52, of 4324 W. 20th St., Panama City, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002. He had been a resident of Panama City since 1963, moving here from Kentucky. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his sister, Karen Paris Holden. He is survived by a son, Phillip Anthony "Tony" Paris and his wife, Tina; daughter, Heather Lee Morrison; mother, Lois Steffan-Teeter; father, Ralph E. Paris; brother, Les Paris and his wife, Brenda; four grandchildren, Christian Anthony Paris, Joseph Beaty Paris, Brianna Morrison, Joseph Robert Morrison; two nieces, Jessica Paris, Jennifer Liem; and a nephew, Michael Mansini. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jerry Moore officiating. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Val Payne, of Groves, Texas, formerly of Panama City, died Wednesday, Feb. 20. Val was the wife of George Payne, who preceded her in death. She was a former member of Grace Presbyterian Church. Funeral services and interment were in Port Arthur, Texas, on Feb. 23.

Rebecca Jane Simon, 55, of Fountain, Fla., died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at her home. She was a native of Jacksonville, Fla., and had lived in Bay County for the past five years. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Fountain. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and a faithful saint of God. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Lowe; a daughter, Kathy Simon; and a grandchild, Josiah, who waited for her in heaven. She is survived by her husband, Joseph F. Simon of Fountain; mother, Georgia Lowe of Fountain; two sons, Ron Beach and wife, Sylvia, of Harrisburg, N.C., and Brian Brooks of Valdosta, Ga.; three daughters, Carey Smith and husband, Jared, of Chattanooga, Tenn., Donna Gosselin and husband, Tim, of Orlando and Lea McGrady of Fountain; four brothers, Robert Lowe Jr. of Atlanta, Edward Lowe of Fountain, Danny Lowe of Panama City and Steven Lowe of Georgia; two sisters, Darlene Collins of Eagle River, Ark., and Jill Lowe of Fountain; and four grandchildren, Nicholas, Benjamin, Brittany, and Dylan. Robert William Tomb, 78, of Panama City, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, in a local hospital. He was a native of West New York, N.J., and had been living in Bay County for the past 15 years.
