Rex Bruner Bush Sr., 86, of Chipley, Fla., passed away Sunday, April 7, 2002, in Dothan, Ala. He was a lifelong resident of Chipley. He was Methodist by faith and a member of Orange Hill Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today, April 10, at Wachob Chapel with the Rev. Ron Alterman officiating. Burial will follow in Orange Hill Cemetery with Brown Funeral Home directing. He is survived by his wife, Etha Ann Bush of Chipley; two sons, Rex Bruner Bush Jr. of Chipley, and Thomas Monroe Bush of Hanav, Germany; four daughters, Dorothy White of Bonifay, Barbara Kent of Chipley, Margie Gramling of Chipley, Audrey Garney of Chipley; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Bertha Catherine Williams and Blanche Martin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Orange Hill Methodist Church.

Funeral services for Sara Odom Currie, 78, of Panama City, who died Sunday, April 7, 2002, in a local nursing home will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers are members of the Shaddai Road Runners: Larry Black, Roy Bobo, Benny Christmas, Max Dean, Durwood Forehand, Buddy Goodman, Ray Gsell, Bill Parks, W.A. Rodgers, Charlie Rosser, Tom Simack, Ed Taylor, T Vinson, and John Winfree. Honorary pallbearers are the Beep Beepers. LUTA MITCHELL STOTZ
Luta Mitchell Stotz passed away in a Panama City hospital on April 6, 2002. She was born in Chipley, Fla., on Dec. 9, 1915, and grew up in Chipley and Perry, Fla. For her college education she attended Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, and she obtained her B.A. from Georgia State University. She then became an administrative assistant and a homemaker. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Chipley and a past deacon of the Presbyterian Church in Kettering, Ohio, where she also served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a member of the Chipola Chapter of NSDAR, the Chipley Historical Society, and the National Association of Senior Friends, Gulf Coast Medical Center Chapter. She was also a former Girl Scout leader. She was the best wife and mother anyone could have, a devoted sister, best friend, and doting grandmother. She was loved and admired by all who knew her. Mrs. Stotz was predeceased by her father, Stephen R. Mitchell; her mother, Flora Campbell Mitchell; and her brother, Stephen R. Mitchell Jr. She is survived by her husband, Robert (Bert) Stotz of Chipley; her daughter, Marian S. Hanson and her husband, Larry Hanson, of Savannah, Ga.; two grandsons, Robert W. Hanson of Atlanta, Ga., and David M. Hanson of Savannah, Ga.; three sisters, Flora Chase of Chipley, Sara Black of Florahome, Fla., and Jean Thorpe of Hot Springs, Ark. Funeral services were held at First Presbyterian Church of Chipley Tuesday, April 9, at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Orr officiating. Burial followed at Glenwood Cemetery with Brown Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were Robert Hanson, David M. Hanson, Phillip Rountree, John Rountree, Earl Merchant, Jack Campbell, Douglas Merkle and Francis Priester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's disease research, 1 W. Shady Grove Road, Suite 140, Rockville, Md. 20850-4622.

RAYMOND WILKES
Raymond Wilkes, 57, of Callaway, passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2002. He was a native of Port St. Joe, had resided in Callaway for the past 30 years, and was a general contractor. He was a loving father and grandfather and loved the outdoors. He was preceded in death by his loving aunt, Mrs. Lessie Lee McMullen; and his "Mama," Vicie Viola Babb, both who had lived in Port St. Joe. Mr. Wilkes is survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Sheryl Wilkes of Callaway; his children, Raymond "Duke" Wilkes Jr., Missy Swiech and husband, Eric, of Callaway, Carol "Sissy" Simmons Kennedy and husband, Mark, of Beale Air Force Base, Calif., Robin Wilkes of Fort Walton Beach; his grandchildren, Landon Swiech and Morgan Swiech of Callaway, Robbie Simmons and Albert Ray Simmons of Ponce de Leon; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Grover Newsome of Macon, Ga.; and numerous other relatives.

Helen R. (Meffan) Sylvester-Butler of Brockton, Mass., formerly of Braintree, Mass., died April 7, 2002. Mrs. Sylvester-Butler was the wife of the late Frank R. Sylvester and John J. Butler and beloved mother of Barbara Hauber of Florida, Alice Pizzano of Weymouth, Mass., and Florida, Lynn Gately of Weymouth, Rita Davis of North Weymouth, Ruth Sylvester of Quincy, Fla., and Dr. Peter Sylvester of Panama City, Fla. Mrs. Sylvester-Butler is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, April 13, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Manor, Thatcher Street, Brockton, Mass. Mrs. Caroline Stockwell, 65, of Panama City, Fla., died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, in a local hospital. Mrs. Stockwell had been a resident of Bay County for 30 years, coming here from Wisconsin. She was a member of Hiland Park United Pentecostal Church and had been a laundry worker at the Edgewater Beach Condo Laundry. Mrs. Stockwell is survived by three daughters, Diane Pollock, Darline Pollock and Betty Stockwell, of Wisconsin; six sons, Bill, Tim, Raymond, David, and Harold Stockwell, and Wayne Pollock, all of Wisconsin; eight brothers, Robert, Ike, Bill, Carl, Earl, Dan, Reuben and Mike Pollock, all of Wisconsin; three sisters, Lila, Elaine, and Deborah, of Wisconsin. Special friends; Jeanette Carter and Jamie of Panama City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Stockwell. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today Sunday, April 14, at Hiland Park United Pentecostal Church, with the Rev. Wilfred Carter officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Ms. Chrystal Messer "Chris" Burra, 85, of West Bay, Fla., passed away Friday, April 12, 2002, at her residence. Chris was born in Dellwood, Fla., and had been a resident of Bay County for 29 years. She was Methodist by faith, a member of the Order of The Eastern Star, miracle strip post 306 and the Sisters of the Nile. Chris is predeceased by her husband, Robert Burra, and is survived by two daughters, Martha Brown of Donaldsonville, Ga., and Cathrine Elkins and husband, David, of Cairo, Ga.; one sister, Mary Hartland of Brandon, Fla.; six grandchildren, Claudia Brown, Glenn Brown Jr., Cathy Bridges, Chris Howell, Micheal Elkins and Douglas Elkins; and seventeen great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday April 20, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Southerland Family Funeral Home Chapel. PASTELL GAVIN
Mrs. Pastell Gavin, age 80, of Panama City, passed away April 13, 2002, at a local nursing facility. A native of Mississippi, Mrs. Gavin had lived in Bay County since 1960. She was a homemaker and an active member of the Gospel Assembly Church where she was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class and was an usherette. Mrs. Gavin's life was her church and her pastor whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Jake Gavin; and a grandson, Stephen Bradley Eldridge. Mrs. Gavin is survived by two daughters, Lucille Heaton and her husband, Floyd, and Jeanne Vause, all of Panama City; two brothers, Max Marshall, of Panama City, and Monroe Marshall, of Apalachicola; four grandchildren, Wynonia Pastell King, Phyllis Marie Kudmani, Maria Lynn Sargent and Ralph Anthony Eldridge; five great-grandchildren, J.R. King, David King, Stephanie Parrish, Kevin Sargent and Kelly Sargent. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at the Gospel Assembly Church with the Rev. Steve Coy officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, April 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church.

Mrs. Betty Louise Gharst, 66, of Youngstown, Fla., died Wednesday evening, April 10, 2002, in Decatur, Ill. She had been a resident of Bay County since 1976, moving here from Valdosta, Ga. Mrs. Gharst was a homemaker. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Donald Gharst. Mrs. Gharst is survived by four sons, Lyndle Joseph Gharst and wife, Beverly, of Oreana, Ill., James Kurk Gharst, of Panama City, Karl Eric Gharst, of Vidor, Texas, and Krea Royal Gharst and wife, Judi, of Youngstown; two daughters, Cheryl Dianne Gray and husband, Terry, of Lake Park, Ga., and Kyla Cobb and husband, Robert, of Tellico Plaines, Tenn.; one brother, Donald Phipps, of Garvin Co., Okla.; one sister, Carol Bullard, of Garvin Co., Okla.; twelve grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Graveside services for Mrs. Gharst will be conducted on Monday, April 15, 2002, at 3 p.m. in the Bayou George Cemetery. Interment will follow. The family will receive friends this afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m.
