John Allen "Jack" Reed

December 13, 1923 - May 4, 2008

Funeral service for John Allen "Jack" Reed, 84, DeLand, who died May 4, 2008, at Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, Orange City, will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 8, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 319 W. Wisconsin Ave., DeLand, with Father W. Donald Lyon officiating. Private entombment in Oakdale Cemetery to follow.

Mr. Reed was born in Lexington, GA and moved to this area in 1953 from Atlanta, GA. He was a landscape architect and owned the Jack Reed Landscaping Company and had worked for the Florida Department of Transportation as a landscape architect. He was a University of Georgia graduate and a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. He loved to collect stamps, coins and model trains and he enjoyed golf and singing.

Survivors include two daughters, Katina Newell of Phelan, CA and Gayla Lodge of DeLand; two brothers, David Reed of Texas and Marion Reed, Athens, GA and granddaughter, Kim Prais, California.

Marvin Tincher

July 28, 1916 - May 4, 2008

Celebration of the Life of Marvin Tincher, a resident of Ormond Beach and DeLand since 2001, who died Sunday, May 4, 2008, will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at The Cloisters, DeLand. Mr. Tincher was born July 28, 1916, in McKee, KY. He moved here from Nashville, TN, where he lived for 51 years and was the regional attorney, Office of the Solicitor, U.S. Department of Labor, before retiring in 1980.

He was a Navy lieutenant during World War II, serving in the Canal Zone and aboard the U.S.S. Monterey in the South Pacific as the communications officer. He received his law degree from the University of Kentucky and a postgraduate degree from the U.S. Naval Academy.

He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Doris Holmes Tincher. He leaves behind three daughters, Gayle Walden (John), Montgomery, AL, Judy Monaco (David), Ormond Beach, and Anne Tincher, Louisville, KY; four granddaughters, Christina Nedorostek, Alexandria, VA, Rosemary Walden, College Station, Texas , Dr. Melissa Jackson, DeLand, and Ellen Lease, Louisville; two great-grandchildren; sister, Marilyn Phipps, Lexington, KY; and close friend, Julie Boyd, DeLand.

Memorial donations suggested to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129, or Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202. Lankford Funeral Home, DeLand, is handling arrangements with burial in Nashville.

Charlotte M. Grefer

February 17, 1930 - May 5, 2008

Charlotte M. Grefer, 78, DeLand, passed away May 5, 2008, at Florida Hospital DeLand, DeLand. Mrs. Grefer was born in Covington, KY and moved here in 1970 from Ft. Lauderdale, FL. She was an assistant working with the EDCD (Early Childhood Development Center) at First Baptist Church of DeLand for ten years. She loved children and working with ceramics.

Survivors include one son, Mark and Diane Grefer, Plano, Texas ; one daughter, Tracie and Mark White, DeLand; one sister, Shirley Schuler, Ft. Lauderdale and her grandchildren, Laura and Michelle Grefer.

Herbert G. Mathis

August 28, 1927 - May 10, 2008

Funeral service for Herbert G. Mathis, 80, DeLand, who died May 10, 2008, at his daughter's home, will be 12 noon Tuesday, May 13, at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave., DeLand, with the Rev. Keith Johnson and the Rev. Frank Clark officiating. Burial will be at DeLand Memorial Gardens. Calling hours are from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Mr. Mathis was born in Miami and moved to this area in 1992 from his birthplace. He was a heavy equipment mechanic. He was a member of Lifepoint Community Church, DeLand.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jesse Mathis. Survivors include his two daughters, Tina (Keith) Aldridge, and Traci (Chuck) Cole, both of DeLand; grandchildren, Brian (Lindsey) Coburn, Sara Cole, Emily Cole; and niece, Michelle Bailey. Harry Joseph Newell, Jr.

April 26, 1924 - May 10, 2008

Memorial service for Harry Joseph Newell, Jr., 84, Orange City, who died May 10, 2008, at Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, West Flagler Care Center, Orange City, will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave., DeLand, with Chaplain Steve Binkley officiating.

Mr. Newell was born in Springfield, Mass., and moved to this area 20 years ago from Richford, VT. He was the owner of Rexall Pharmacy in Richford, VT and several other pharmacies. He served in the Navy as a pharmacist's mate during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 12, Richford, VT, VFW Post 758, St. Albans, VT, Alcoholics Anonymous for 25 years, and St. Peters Catholic Church, DeLand.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Joseph Newell, Sr. and Agnes Veronica Dorr; his wife, Jan Garrow Newell; brothers, Arthur Newell, Richard Newell, Edward (Ted) Newell and Robert Newell.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Sherry Newell, Orange City; three sons, Harry J. (Linda) Newell III, Bethlehem, NH, Michael (Diana Marshall) Newell, Sarasota, FL, Ross Newell, Massachusetts; stepson, Michael (Jennifer) Desmarais, Temple Terrace, FL; two daughters, Patti (Ken) Johnson, Flamouth, Mass., Kelly (Michael) King, Spencer, Mass.; grandchildren, Rachel, Casey, Allyson, Jillyan, Harry IV, Lindsay, Riley, Bryn, Austin, Travis; and great-grandson, Kyle.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.

Margaret R. Penner

December 6, 1921 - May 12, 2008

Funeral service for Margaret R. Penner, 86, DeBary, who died May 12, 2008, at her residence, will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1345 Aquarius Avenue, DeLand. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery. Calling hours are from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, May 16, at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave., DeLand.

Mrs. Penner was born in Somerset County, PA and moved to this area in 1962 from Miami. She was a homemaker and a faithful member of her church, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, DeLand, First Ward. Mrs. Penner enjoyed spending summers at her mountain home in Elijay, GA.

Survivors include one son, Richard L. Penner, Lake Helen, FL; three daughters, Janice Govreau, DeBary, Brenda Nicholson, Acworth, GA, Barbara Ballard, Colorado Springs, CO; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Jessie Byrd Blount

June 4, 1936 - May 17, 2008

Funeral Service for Jessie Byrd Blount, 71, who died May 17, 2008, at North Florida Regional Medical Center, Gainesville, FL, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 20 at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave., DeLand. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery. Calling hours are from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 20 at the funeral home.

Her husband was Judge Uriel Blount Jr., longtime resident of Gainesville. Mrs. Blount was born in Florence, SC and moved to this area in 1959 from South Carolina. She was a Legal Secretary/Judicial Assistant/Homemaker. She was President of West Voluisa Lawyers Club, Pres. Garden Circle DeLand, and a member of Pilot Club.

She was predeceased by her husband and her brother, James C. Byrd. Survivors include A Very Special Cat, Ella; her two daughters, Cherie Fine (Jack), Gainesville, Camile Huie (Phil), Gainesville; one sister, Lola Gardner (Less Farrar), DeLand; five grandchildren, Stephen Fine, Julia Fine, Stewart Walker, Westleigh Walker, Kent Walker; numerous nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law, Rear Admiral Robert Blount, Norfolk, VA and Bruce Wigle, Orlando, FL.

Memorial donations may be made to Alachua County Humane Society, Friends of Music of University of Florida, NW 6th Street, Gainesville, FL.

Mildred Jean Finch

November 8, 1921 - May 17, 2008

Memorial Service for Mildred Jean Finch, 86, DeLand, who died May 17, 2008 at Alliance Center for Health Care in DeLand, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 20 at Church of the Nazarene in DeLand. Burial will be in Endicott, NY at the convenience of the family.

Mrs. Finch was born November 8, 1921. She was a loving mother and homemaker. She was a member of the DeLand Church of the Nazarene. She volunteered for Hospice of Volusia/Flagler County.

Survivors include her two sons, Arnold L. Finch (Alice), of Lake Helen, FL, Kenneth A. Finch (Nancy), of Endicott, NY.; two daughters, Donna J. Enriques (Jose), of Corpus Christi, Texas , Karen R. Harvey (Lyle), of Johnson City, NY; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

William "Dan" Goodwin, Jr.

September 13, 1919 - May 19, 2008

Graveside service for William "Dan" Goodwin, Jr., 88, DeLand, who died May 19, 2008, at Florida Hospital DeLand, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 31, at Hollywood Cemetery, Orange City. military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army.

Mr. Goodwin was born in Knoxville, TN and moved to this area in 1982 from Fairport, NY. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a film coater for Eastman Kodak Company with 31 years service in film manufacturing. He was a member of the West Volusia Historical Society, V.F.W., American Legion and the Polish American Club.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ciara Dorothy Goodwin, DeLand; two sons, Terry Goodwin, New York and Wayne Goodwin, Illinois; three daughters, Diane Coene and Beverly Brownell, Orlando, and Shirley Dean, Orange City; sister, Jane Creed, Illinois; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Karen Deborah "Debbie" Calkins

January 21, 1959 - May 28, 2008

Memorial Mass for Karen Deborah "Debbie" Calkins, 49, DeLand, who died May 28, 2008, at Florida Hospital DeLand, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 2, at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Calling hours will be Sunday, June 1, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. with a prayer service at 5 p.m. at Lankford Funeral Home.

Mrs. Calkins was born in Brunswick, GA and moved to this area 11 years ago from St. Petersburg, FL. She worked as a field inspector in Ft. Pierce, FL, for the nuclear plant and later moved to Washington , D.C., where she worked for the Omni Corp. for construction. She then moved to Cape May, NJ, working for the city, but her true passion was working with the homeless and underprivileged. She received her degree in public housing from Rutgers College and then worked with the Public Housing Authority in Pinellas County, where she ran a family self-sufficiency program.

She served as Miss Volusia County Fair in 1976 and was a graduate of DeLand High School in 1977. Outside of work her time was spent gardening and spending time with friends.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Jeffrey Brent Lee. Survivors include her husband of ten years, William "Bill" Calkins; son, Steven Lee Anderson, DeLand; parents, Robert Edward Lee, Daytona Beach, and Carolee Morris, DeLand; brothers, Robert Scott Lee, McKinney, Texas ; and sister, Linda Lee Younk, DeLand.

Memorial donations may be made to Volusia/Flagler Coalition for the Homeless, P.O. Box 6498, Daytona Beach, FL 32122 or the American Cancer Society.
