Wood M. Capell
LAKE CITY -- Wood M. Capell of Lake City died Wednesday at his home. He was 83.
Mr. Capell formerly worked for Florida Power & Light and later owned Capell Shoe Service in Lake City. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Born in Hawthorne, he moved to Lake City 56 years ago.
He was a charter member of Parkview Baptist Church, where he taught Bible class.
Mr. Capell enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Reba Capell of Lake City; two sons, Charles Capell and Frank "Woody" Capell, both of Lake City; a daughter, Betty Herdegen of Lake City; a brother, the Rev. Tom Capell of Lakeland; a sister, Annie Fay Hickox of Hawthorne; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Hospice of North Central Florida in Lake City or to Parkview Baptist Church Building Fund.
James M. Field
James M. Field of Gainesville died Tuesday at his home. He was 74.
Mr. Field was an auto body repairman. He also retired from the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
Born in Winter Haven, he moved from Winter Haven to Gainesville 63 years ago.
He had been a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Mr. Field was preceded in death by his wife, Jewelcq May Field.
Survivors include three daughters, Carol Williams of Hutchinson, Kan., Joyce Cusick of Steam Boat Springs, Colo., and Janice Wheatley of Plano, Texas; three sons, James R. Field of Gainesville, Dean Pogue and Dennis Pogue, both of Hutchinson; two sisters, Frances Dicks of Lake City and Sarah Weeks of Alachua; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Richard Kenneth Hutson
Richard Kenneth Hutson of Gainesville died Tuesday in Gainesville. He was 85.
Mr. Hutson was a retired colonel in the U.S. Army and had served during World War II. He later was director of the Transportation Engineering Agency for the U.S. Army.
He won three Legions of Merit, two Bronze Star Medals, a Purple Heart, a Combat Infantry Badge and a War Department general staff identification badge. He was a charter member of the National Defense Transportation Association.
Born in Hebron, Neb., he moved from Williamsburg to Gainesville two years ago. He completed the Army ROTC program at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
He was a Catholic.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Frances Hutson of Gainesville; a daughter, Mary E. Tenuta of Foothill Ranch, Calif.; three sons, Robert D. Hutson of Gainesville, Gary E. Hutson of Houston, Texas, and Samuel S. Hutson of Salt Lake City; three sisters, Eleanor Frisbie of Fairmont, Minn., Mary Jane Wurth of Long Beach, Calif., and Exie Wilkes of Biloxi, Miss.; and nine grandchildren.
Erma L. Purdy Jones
HAWTHORNE -- Erma L. Purdy Jones of Hawthorne died Friday at her home after a short illness. She was 62.
Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and a member of Mount Pedro Baptist Church in Micanopy.
Born in Hawthorne, she moved from St. Petersburg back to Hawthorne two years ago. She graduated from Shell High School in Hawthorne.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Henry Jones of Hawthorne; a son, Gerald Jones of Ocala; two daughters, Eleanor Stafford of Conyers, Ga., and Sharettecq Gunn of Ocala; a sister, Jacqueline Graham of St. Petersburg; five brothers, R.C. Purdy Jr., John Purdy, Leander Purdy and Henry Purdy, all of St. Petersburg, and James Purdy of Macon, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
Nathaniel King
McINTOSH -- Nathaniel King of McIntosh died unexpectedly June 3 at his home. He was 52.
Mr. King was a former laborer. He also served in the U.S. Army.
He was born in Fort White and moved to McIntosh five years ago.
He was educated in Marion County.
Mr. King was a Methodist.
Survivors include his mother, Eliza K. Trawick of High Springs; his stepfather, John D. Robinson of High Springs; two sisters, Mary McMahon of High Springs and Inez Williams of Ocala; and a brother, Roosevelt King of High Springs.
Allie Mae Kirkland
STARKE -- Allie Mae Kirkland of Starke died Tuesday at Brookwood Nursing Care Center in Starke. She was 101.
Mrs. Kirkland was a retired minister at the Church of God.
Born in Moultrie County, Ga., she moved from Jacksonville to Starke 30 years ago.
She was a member of the Starke Church of God.
Survivors include six daughters, Esther Moore of Starke, Mary Jones of Houston, Martha Farina of Bellflower, Calif., Elizabeth Knight of Live Oak, Rachel Townsend of Lake City and Lorieta Dykes of Orlando; a son, Samuel M. Kirkland of Alapaha, Ga.; a sister, Gladys Sult of Cleveland, Tenn.; 26 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
Harriet Rouse Knight
OLD TOWN -- Harriet Rouse Knight of Old Town died Saturday at Ayers Health and Rehab Center in Trenton. She was 94.
Mrs. Knight was a former home economics teacher.
Born in Valdosta, Ga., she moved from Lakeland to Old Town five years ago.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lakeland.
Mrs. Knight and her husband helped establish and maintain a large-print book section in the Lakeland Public Library.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Key Knight; and a son, Gordon E. Knight.
Survivors include two daughters, Harriet Knight Rogers of Old Town and Helen Knight Decola of Key Largo; and four grandchildren.
Bertie Crews McDavid
MELROSE -- Bertie Crews McDavid of Melrose died Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville. She was 86.
Mrs. McDavid was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Born in Macclenny, she moved from Jacksonville to Melrose 26 years ago.
Survivors include a daughter, Doris Buckley of Melrose; a son, Harold McDavid of Melrose; a brother, Earl Crews of Glen St. Mary; four sisters, Lettie Register of Glen St. Mary, Lydia Davis of Bryceville, Dicie Gonzales of Jacksonville and Vera Eddy of Callahan; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Douglas Clarkson Miller
Douglas Clarkson Miller of Gainesville died Monday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. He was 76.
Mr. Miller was a real estate agent and a former employee of Martin Marietta Corp. in Cape Canaveral. He also was a staff sergeant and aerial gunner in the Army Air Corps during World War II and later was a first lieutenant and radar technician during the Korean War in the Air Force Reserve.
Born in Owatonna, Minn., he moved from Titusville to Gainesville 29 years ago. He attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
He was a volunteer for Friends of the Library and was a Mason and a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and the D-Day Normandy Veterans.
Mr. Miller was an Episcopalian.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline "Polly" Miller of Gainesville; two daughters, Edith Smaistrlacq of Gainesville and Carolyn Green of Bay City, Texas; and three grandchildren.

Jimmie Morris Reid
Jimmie Morris Reid of Gainesville died Tuesday at Oaks Rehab Center in Gainesville. She was 85.
Mrs. Reid was a homemaker and a member of Parkview Baptist Church, where she was in the senior Sunday school class.
Born in Fitzgerald, Ga., she moved from Tallahassee to Gainesville 47 years ago.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Reid Sr.
Survivors include five sons, John L. Reid Jr. of Jacksonville, James Reid, Robert L. Reid and William E. "Ned" Reid, all of Gainesville, and Jack Travis Reid of Sneads; a brother, Damon Morris of Tallahassee; a sister, Eve Hayhurst of Orlando; 19 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Shirley Riggs
Shirley B. Riggs of Gainesville died Tuesday at Hospice House in Gainesville. She was 56.
Mrs. Riggs was a lifelong resident of Gainesville.
She was a member of Bethel Temple Worship Center.
Mrs. Riggs enjoyed gardening and fishing.
Survivors include her husband, Lernerd Riggs of Gainesville; two daughters, Brenda Buxton and Cheryl Riggs, both of Jacksonville; a son, Jimmy Dean Buxton of Jacksonville; a brother, Ed Bryant of Windsor; three sisters, Lois Baggs, Mary A. Haltiwanger and Irma Jean Duncan, all of Gainesville; and two grandchildren.
Paul B. Roberts Jr.
ALACHUA -- Paul B. Roberts Jr. of Alachua died Tuesday at his home after a long illness. He was 60.
Mr. Roberts was a machine tester at Driltech.
He also was a mechanic in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietname War.
Born in Little Rock, Ark., he moved to Alachua 20 years ago.
He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Diann Roberts of Alachua; a son, Roy Roberts of Alachua; two daughters, Jackie Adams and Karen S. Roberts, both of Alachua; and five grandchildren.

Rudolph Sams
WILLISTON -- Rudolph Sams of Williston died unexpectedly Friday at Shands at the University of Florida. He was 58.
Mr. Sams was a retired truck driver for Lorraine Stanton Vans in Ocala.
Born in Fairfield, he moved from Fairfield to Williston 10 years ago. He was educated in the Marion County school system.
He was a member of Mount Herman Methodist Church of Fairfield.
Survivors include his wife, Ophelia McNeil Sams of Williston; five daughters, Juanita West, Ida Hamilton and Carla Sams, all of Sarasota, and Angeline Sams and Lena Walker, both of Miami; two sons, Conrad Sams and Tracy Curtis, both of Archer; a stepdaughter, Tamara McNeil of Williston; three stepsons, Barry McNeil of Williston, Phillip McNeil of Atlanta and Geno McNeil of St. Petersburg; three sisters, Etta L. Martin of Fairfield, Barbara J. Petty of Louisville, Ky., and Cathalene Kinsler of Brandon; 14 grandchildren; and 11 step-grandchildren.
