CHESHIRE, CHRIS
Chris Cheshire, 41, of Fernandina Beach died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002.
He was born in Jacksonville and had resided in Fernandina most of his life. He was a 1979 graduate of West Nassau High School. He had worked with his father and brother in Cheshire Paving Contractors of Fernandina Beach and recently was a paper machine operator with Jefferson Smurfit Paper Mill. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his wife, Jamesyn Cheshire; his daughters, Caitlyn and Chelsea Cheshire; his father, Grove Cleveland Cheshire of Callahan; his mother, Ruth L. Hassett of Ormond Beach; his brothers, Cleve Cheshire of Callahan and Sean Hassett of Ormond Beach; and his grandmother, Lurlene Cheshire of Callahan.
Funeral services were held Tuesday in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Home with Dr. Lynn Hyatt officiating. The family received friends Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Micah's Place, 910 S. Eighth St., Fernandina Beach, FL 32034.
JONES, ARTHUR MARTIN
Arthur Martin Jones Jr. died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, surrounded by family and friends.
The newlywed and father of three was a native of Jacksonville. He served in the U.S. Air Force and graduated from Florida State University and Duke University School of Anesthesia. He was a 29-year employee of Shands Jacksonville. He will be remembered for his love of the water, vintage cars and classic wooden boats.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Gene Jones; his children, Jennifer Elizabeth Jones, Matthew Arthur Jones and Jonathan Mark Jones; and his sisters, Nona MacCollough and Phyllis Holeman.
The immediate family received friends and loved ones on Friday at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home. A memorial service celebrating Art's life was held Saturday.
LEWIS, WALTER C.
Walter C. Lewis, 64, of Fernandina Beach died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at his residence.
He was born in Willacoochee, Ga., and was the son of the late Bob and Nancy Lewis of Willacoochee. He moved to Fernandina Beach in 1961. He served in the U.S. Navy on submarines. He graduated from Florida College of Jacksonville. He retired in 1997 from ITT Rayonier Inc. as a pulp selector.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Leona Goodbread, in November 1980, and two brothers, Buddy Lewis in April 1990 and Caulie Lewis in July 1996. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean Lewis; his son, Justin Wade (Joyce) Lewis of Richmond, Va.; his daughter, Mary (Guero) Martinez of Eastman, Ga.; his brother, James Lewis of Rocky Face, Ga.; three sisters, Thelma Peterson of Fort Gibson, Okla., Bobbie Jean Renshaw of St. George, Ga., and Betty Sue Hartsfield of Tifton, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
The family received friends Monday at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home and Tuesday at Relihan Funeral Home in Pearson, Ga. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at the Willacoochee City Cemetery

STANGER, RHYS
Rhys Stanger, 80, of Amelia Island died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Shands Jacksonville after suffering injuries in a small airplane crash on Oct. 31.
He was a former resident of Darien, Conn., and was a 1944 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School. He received his MBA from New York University. During World War II, he was a B-24 Bomber pilot, seeing action in Italy and Austria. He was president of The Giegerich Co., a real estate development company in Westport, Conn. After settling in Amelia Island, he became involved in Plantation activities, serving on the board of the Fairway Oaks Association, the Club Board and other committees.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, June MacCallum Stanger. He then became active in the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. He helped with Making Strides for Cancer and the Man-to-Man programs.
Survivors include his wife, Leslie; two daughters, Dr. Lis (Dr. Russel) Cook of Washington, N.C., and Nancy (Bob) Stopher of Louisville, Ky.; four grandsons, Rhys and David Cook and Jim and David Stopher; and one granddaughter, Lynn Stopher.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Amelia Island Plantation Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Amelia Island Plantation Chapel or the Fernandina Beach chapter of the American Cancer Society.
TRUETT, NICHOLE FRANCIS
Nichole "Nikki" Francis Truett, a former resident of Fenandina Beach and CNA at Quality Health of Fernandina, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta after suffering injuries from an accident on Oct. 28, 2002, in Berrian County, Ga.
She was born Oct. 28, 1976, in Pensacola, Fla.
She is survived by her daughters, Chelsea and Courtney; her parents, Steve and Tina Mercer of Fernandina Beach; her sister, Amanda Mercer; her brother, Sean Mercer; her grandparents, James (Dec.) and Bettie Williamson, Stanley (Bo) and Brenda Mixon, James Mercer and Shirley Buckner, all of Moultrie; and her fiancé (Pee-Wee) Walter McCall of Adel, Ga., and his three sons, Aston, Naithan, and Nicolas.
She is also survived by her birth parents, Allen F. Bailey of Moultrie, Ga., and Jackie Steve of Long Beach, Calif.; sister, Rebecca Davis; brothers, John Bailey, Michael Bailey, Albert Baily, Brian Tucker and Daniel Steve; grandparents, Wandell and Margrett Bailey, Hal and Norma Eyerly (Dec.); step-grandmother, Vi Eyerly; and countless aunts, uncles, cousins, family and friends.
Services were held Friday in Moultrie, Ga., in a double interment with her great-grandmother, Verna Kelley Baily, who died Nov. 13.
DeWitt, William E.
William E. "Bill" DeWitt, 80, of Fernandina Beach died Monday, July 7, 2003, at Life Care Center of Hilliard.
He was the husband of the late Juanita M. DeWitt. A native of Jacksonville, he worked as a dairyman for several dairies in Northeast Florida for many years and had resided in Nassau County since 1972. He was a member of the First Pentecostal Church of Kingsland, Ga., and served his country as a cook in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include his children, Elizabeth Ann Dean, Mary Alice Gillis and William Edward DeWitt Jr., all of Atkinson, Ga., Katherine Reeves of Jacksonville and Gail Rowland of Fernandina Beach; one sister, Fannie Lee Dze Vitz of Jacksonville; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Osbourn officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Lawnwood Cemetery

Hendrix, Malcolm Luther
Malcolm Luther Hendrix, 58, of Austin, Texas, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, in Corpus Christi, Texas.
A former resident of Fernandina Beach, he was born Aug. 22, 1944, in Sherborne, England, the son of Dorothy (Trent) Hendrix Schroeder and the late Luther Bland Hendrix. He was a graduate of Florida State University and was an avid sports fan, following FSU and the Boston Red Sox. He loved sharing stories with his family and they love telling stories about him. A history buff, he loved to read, particularly about the Civil War period. He served his country, obtaining the rank of captain in the U.S. Air Force.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Mason Duncan Hendrix, and his wife of 35 years, Dorothy A. Hendrix, on July 25, 2002.
Survivors include his daughter, Stephanie A. (Carlton) Steen; his son, Travis Malcolm (Veronica) Hendrix; his mother; two brothers, Kirby (Janice) Hendrix and Steven (Cathy) Hendrix; four grandchildren; a niece and nephews.
The family received friends Saturday at the Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville, Texas. Services were held Sunday at the Memorial Chapel of Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home with Pastor Keith Born of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Jameyson, Noreen Ditata
Noreen Ditata Jameyson, 56, of Fernandina Beach died Monday, July 7, 2003, at her home.
A native of Livermore Falls, Maine, she moved to Fernandina Beach in January 2002 from Kennebunk, Maine, where she resided for 23 years. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in Portland, Maine, and a graduate of Westbrook Junior College. Upon graduation she went to work in the purchasing department of the International Paper Co. in Jay, Maine. Following that, she worked for Joseph Iriana, DDS, in Kennebunk, Maine as a receptionist-secretary for the next 10 years. She then went to work for UNUM-Provident Insurance Co. in Portland as a customer service representative.
Noreen loved gardening, flowers, walking, reading and playing golf with the ladies on Tuesday at the Golf Club of North Hampton. Above all, she loved and cherished her family. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Fernandina Beach.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Baker, in 1984.
Survivors include her husband of 34 years, Gale W. Jameyson of Fernandina Beach; her son, John N. (Sandra) Jameyson of Durham, N.C.; her daughter, Lori Jameyson (Paul) Lyons of Bidderford, Maine; her brother, Michael J. (Rita) Ditata of Jay, Maine; one grandson, Nicholas James Lyons; her stepgranddaughter, Hannah Marie Lyons; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 tonight at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home in Fernandina Beach. Poppell, Prudencia Capo Flood Rhoden
Prudencia Capo Flood Rhoden Poppell, 88, of Yulee died Friday, July 4, 2003.
She was born Nov. 1, 1914, in Yulee to the late Joseph Arnow Flood and Jane Hall Davis Flood. She lived in Yulee for 78 years and reared her two daughters there. She worked in her father's general store during her youth and worked for some years as a substitute teacher at the former Yulee School. She taught full-time during the early 1970s at St. Michael's Catholic School in Fernandina Beach. She was a lifelong member of the Yulee United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, vacation Bible school and oversaw the church nursery. In 1992, she and her late husband, Raymond M. Rhoden, who retired from Container Corp., moved to West Palm Beach, and resided there until his death. In 1998, she re-met a friend, Hoyle Poppell, from her early years, and they were married in 2000.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond M. Rhoden, and her siblings, Henry Flood, Jennie Flood and Carolyn Flood Durden.
Survivors include her husband, Hoyle Poppell; two daughters, Amanda (David) St. John of West Palm Beach and Angela Rhoden of Palm Beach Gardens; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Clifford A. (Mary) Flood of Yulee; four sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Sills, Charles Ray
Charles Ray Sills, 61, of Nahunta, Ga., died Friday, July 4, 2003, at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross, Ga., after a short illness.
Born in Duval County, he was the son of Raymond G. and Amanda Dees Sills. He was a member of the Lulaton Baptist Church in the Lulaton community and a former member and deacon of Springhill Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach. He worked for many years with the city of Jacksonville before opening and running C&C Pool Co. He served as president of the Nassau County Volunteer Fire Department. His favorite pastimes were playing the guitar and singing.
Survivors include his wife, Francie Bohanon Sills of Nahunta, Ga.; two sons, Christopher "Chris" Sills of Nahunta, Ga., and Edward "Slick" (Sandra) Andrews of Jacksonville; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four brothers and sisters; nieces and nephews; and other relatives.
Visitation was held Sunday at Chambless-Frye Funeral Home. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday at Lulaton Baptist Church with the Revs. Monroe Gill and Jackie Hayes officiating. Interment followed at the Springhill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Bobbie Campbell Walker, 74, of Tifton, Ga., died Saturday, July 5, 2003, in Orange Park Medical Center after a brief illness.
A native of Jacksonville, she lived in Appling County for many years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was employed by Big Brothers & Big Sisters.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Gardner of Tifton, Ga., and Brenda Harden of Fernandina Beach; three sons, Johnie Campbell, David Campbell and Allen Campbell, all of Baxley, Ga.; one sister, Doris Huggins of Orange Park; two brothers, Callis Cook of Jacksonville and Herman Heape of South Carolina; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family received friends at the home of David and Cathy Campbell. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Spring Branch Baptist Church with the Revs. Chip Woodruff and B.D. Carter officiating. Interment followed in Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Wike, Bobby Dean
Bobby Dean Wike, 68, of Yulee died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville.
He was born in Hickory Hill, Ill., and lived most of his life in Florida, the last 25 years in Yulee. He was a retired U.S. Navy and disabled veteran.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Jan; four daughters, Nadine Hendry and Justine Kirkwood, both of Jacksonville, Mary Palacios of Yulee and Jennifer Cartrette of Fernandina Beach; four sons, Robert Wike of Tyrone, Ga., Greg Wike and David Wike, both of Jacksonville, and Jonathan Wike of Yulee; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
