Daniel E. Cook
Daniel E. Cook, 53, of Nassauville, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at his residence.
Mr. Cook was born Nov. 20, 1952, in Jacksonville. He was raised in Oceanway and moved here in 1984.
Mr. Cook was a carpenter with Max Leggett Construction Co. of Jacksonville. He was a member of the North Jacksonville Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include: his wife, Dyanne; two sons, Daniel C. Cook of Green Cove Springs and Robert D. Cook of Callahan; stepdaughter, Shelly Crider; brother, Leo Cook; sister, Mattie Lou; eight grandchildren and many, many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the graveside in Ferreira Cemetery in Jacksonville, with Joe Blake officiating.

Carolyn Crane Fitz
Carolyn Crane Fitz passed away March 27 at Baptist Beaches Hospital. She was surrounded by her children, and supported with love and comfort.
Carolyn was born on Feb. 12, 1930, in Montclair, N.J. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with honors, from Middlebury in 1952.
After marrying Thomas Fitz in 1954, they moved around the United States and to the Bahamas with their four children, finally settling in North Florida in 1973. Carolyn went on to receive a Masters of Library Science from Florida State University in 1975, and then began a career as a librarian, culminating in her role as Head Librarian of the Fernandina Beach Library. After retirement she continued supporting the library part time at the Braddum Brooks library in Jacksonville. Carolyn loved the symphony, baseball, books and animals. She was a loving person who will be remembered for her caring and light-hearted approach to life.
She is survived by her children, Gordon Fitz and his partner, Colette Hartshorne, Sharon Lucius and her husband Kenneth, Brian Fitz and his wife Laurie, and Timothy Fitz and his wife Jennifer. Carolyn also had three beloved grandchildren, Chelsea Lucius, and Austin and Emily Fitz; her sister, Constance Meyer of New Jersey; and a brother, Ralph Crane of Bradenton.
An informal remembrance of her life will be held today, March 31, at 2 p.m. at the gazebo at Main Beach Park at the ocean in Fernandina Beach (near Sandy Bottoms restaurant). All are welcome.
The family asks that donations be made in lieu of flowers to: Save the Manatee Club, 500 N. Maitland Ave., Maitland, FL 32751.

Cindy Mucaro
Cindy Mucaro, 67, of Fernandina Beach, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville.
A native of Dublin, Ireland, she had resided in Fernandina Beach since 1999.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11, at St. Michael's Catholic Church with the Rev. Brian Eburn, pastor, officiating.
Following the service there will be a reception held in the parish hall. Interment will take place at a later date in Dublin, Ireland.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kidney Cancer Association, 1234 Sherman Ave., Suite 203, Evanston, IL 60202, or call 1-800-850-9132.

Trudy C. Beckett
Trudy C. Beckett, 47, of Fernandina Beach, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Baptist Medical Center Nassau.
A native of Jacksonville, she was a lifetime resident of Fernandina Beach. During her career she was employed as a graphics artist for the Fernandina Beach News-Leader for many years.
She attended Fernandina Beach High School, graduating in 1976, going on to attend Valdosta State College in Valdosta, Ga., and graduating from Florida State University. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian faith.
Her survivors include her mother, Gertrude J. Beckett of Fernandina Beach, and her three brothers, Kenneth L. Beckett of Estes Park, Colo., John W. Beckett of Fernandina Beach and Stephen L. Beckett of Palatka.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 17, 2006, in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Smith, interim pastor, officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service. Interment followed in Bosque-Bello Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Trudy's name may be made to the Nassau Humane Society, 671 Airport Road in Fernandina Beach.

Betty Ann Hernandez
Betty Ann Hernandez, 72, of Fernandina Beach, passed away of natural causes on Thursday, April 13, 2006.
Mrs. Hernandez was born in Memphis, Tenn., on July 30, 1933, and had lived on Amelia Island since the mid 1960s.
Her husband, Thomas Hernandez, preceded her in death in March 1987.
She was a member of Five Points Baptist Church. She worked as a receptionist for the Job Service Company and twice held a position on the Nassau General Hospital Board before it was acquired through the Baptist Medical Association.
She is survived by her son, Bobby Hernandez of Cut-Off, La., her daughter, L. Susan (Paul) Remmers of Sugar Tree, Tenn., a brother, George (Rose) Morris of Fernandina Beach, two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held on Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at the Burgess Chapel. Interment took place in Bosque-Bello Cemetery.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Debra Francis, Kay Johnson and the members of Five Points Baptist Church for all their support.

Winston L. Strickland
Winston L. Strickland, 47, of Fernandina Beach, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2006, in Key West.
Mr. Strickland attended Fernandina Beach High School and worked as a commercial fisherman.
He was the son of the late Jessie and Ovida Strickland and is survived by his brothers, Kenny Strickland, Bud Strickland and C.D. Branan; and his sisters, Joyce Zimmerman, Grace Whitley and Mary Durrance, all of Fernandina Beach. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Private services are scheduled for a later date at the home of his aunt, Kathleen Holloway of Fernandina Beach.

Helen E. Purvis
Helen E. Purvis of Fernandina Beach passed away on Monday, April 17, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was retired from University Hospital (Shands) in Jacksonville, where she worked for more than 30 years as an OR Tech.
She was a faithful member of Nassau Baptist Temple since New Year's Eve 1972, when she received God's salvation. Helen will be remembered by all who knew her because of her love for others and the testimony she lived. She enjoyed doing any activity that involved her church, the choir and the school.
She is survived by her children, Carrol Marvin "Chuck" (Deidre) Kelley, Anita Kelley (Richard) Bunkley, Lori St. John (Glenn) Barnes, and James Rodney (Robin) Purvis; her grandchildren, Gary W. Dean, Casey M. Dean, Erin M. Bunkley, R. Derek Bunkley, David W. Bunkley, Sarah E. Bunkley, Lisa J. Manning, C. Riley Tompkins, Charles G. Barnes and Shawn A. Barnes; several great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law, Sue Wainright, her niece, Suzanne Wainright, and special family friends Dr. Dennis (Boss), Telly, Mattie, Sheila, Mabel and Peggy.
There will be a homegoing service at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 20, in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Home with Dr. Larry Montgomery leading the celebration of her life. There will also be a service at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, at Nassau Baptist Temple with Brother Truman Blankenship presiding.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Helen's name to Nassau Christian Schools, 464069 SR 200, Yulee, FL 32097. The family will receive visitors at Mrs. Purvis' home, 308 South 15th St.

Vera E. Barnes
Vera E. Barnes went home to be with Jesus Saturday May 9th, 2009 at 2:45 p.m. She is survived by her husband, three daughters, six grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed. Memorial services will be held at the Lion's Club in Yulee at 6 p.m. today, May 15.

George D. Fowle Jr.
Mr. George D. Fowle Jr., age 84, of Amelia Island, FL passed away on Monday evening, May 11, 2009 at his residence.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late George D. and Margaret Large Fowle. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, where he met his future wife Bobbi Souder. Married in 1948, George with Bobbi settled in Villanova, Pa., raising three daughters and serving as an engineer at Leeds & Northrup. An entrepreneur at heart, he worked with Leeds & Northrup in Philadelphia and Monsanto in Trenton, New Jersey before joining Johnson & Johnson and moving to Cohasset, Massachusetts. He started a corporate consulting firm in 1982, FCS Industries, which managed and grew small businesses in the U.S. and Europe. In the early 90s, after retiring from J&J, Mr. Fowle joined fellow entrepreneurs Paul Dobson and Bill Hodgson and founded MicroSpring Inc, a highly successful company manufacturing precision medical guide wires used in medical diagnostic procedures. After 48 years of never missing a day of work, he retired again, spending summers at the family's golf course residence in Scituate, Mass and winters in Amelia Island. George and Bobbi made Amelia their full time home in 2006.
During WW II, he served in the U. S. Navy Air Corps, flying the F6F Hellcat and earning his wings, an achievement of which he was most proud. He loved flying, and all flying things. Throughout his life he also loved racing and restoring automobiles, especially Porsches, and from the age of 16 until the age of 70 he enjoyed owning and riding motorcycles. He was a scratch golfer, shooting in
the 70's well into his 70's, held club champion at Gulph Mills Golf Club, was a college diver and an avid skier through the age of 78. He also enjoyed playing guitar and singing cowboy songs.
He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and will be remembered by his family as a loving, loyal, demanding and tender-hearted husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Fowle leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Bobbi Fowle, Fernandina Beach, FL; their three daughters, Julie Parsons, University Park, MD; Katharine Griswold, Wellesley, MA; Mary Dashiell, Monmouth Junction, NJ; seven grandchildren, Carly, Kate and Elizabeth Dashiell, Lisa and Caroline Griswold, and Katharine and Jon Parsons; and a niece, Margaret d'Esterhazy.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, May 18, 2009 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with Reverend George Young, officiating.
George will be laid to rest at a later date in the memory garden of St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Cohasset, MA where he and Bobbi were long-time members.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to St. Peters Episcopal Church, 801 Atlantic Avenue, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034.

Annie Mae Kirby
Annie Mae Kirby, 94, of Fernandina Beach, Florida passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Baptist Medical Center-Nassau in Fernandina.
A native of Caldwell County, Texas she had resided in Port Arthur, Texas for a number of years before relocating to Fernandina Beach in 1992 where she was an active resident of her neighborhood at Peppertree Village for sixteen years, and most recently moving to Quality Health of Fernandina in 2008. During her career she worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for thirty years until her retirement in 1967. While living in Texas Mrs. Kirby was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, auxiliary of the Order of the Oddfellows. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers since her retirement. Locally, she loved baking cookies and was known all over town as "The cookie lady" and was a longtime faithful member of Five Points Baptist Church, and loved and cherished her family and her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Z.V. Kirby in 1975. Her survivors include her daughter, Barbara Kirby Burbank (Frank Burbank, Jr.) of Fernandina Beach, Fla., two grandsons, William and Mason Burbank, both of Fernandina Beach, Fla., granddaughter, Katherine Burbank of St. Louis, MO., niece, Lori (Russell) Calhoun of Katy, Texas, and nephew, Bob (Darlene) Barker of New Braunfers, Texas.
The family will hold a private service and interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Five Points Baptist Church, 736 Bonnieview Drive, Fernandina Beach, Fla., 32034.

Gladys Ann Touchtone Severance
Gladys Ann Touchtone Severance was born May 12, 1932 and died 77 years and 1 day later on May 13, 2009.
During her life she held many dear places in people's hearts. She was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, step mother, great-grandmother and mother-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son and a sister. She leaves behind, Charles Severance, her husband of 30 years and her best friend for 65 years, her daughters, Martha Christiansen and her husband Frank, Fayetteville, NC, Ruthie Stephens and her husband Daniel, Kingsland, GA, two grandchildren, Brett Christiansen and his wife Kristie, Jacksonville, FL, Charlene Vandiver and her husband Clayton, Jacksonville, FL, a stepson, Jamie Nicks and family, South Carolina, three great-grandchildren, Alex, Clayton and Charlton Vandiver, Jacksonville, FL, three brothers, three sisters, several nieces and nephews and the family dog, Muttley; who was her constant companion for over two years.
Guests and friends are invited to visit on Saturday from 5:00-7:00 pm at the funeral home.

Donald Anthony Shwedo
Don Shwedo, 76, of Atlantic Beach, FL, formerly of Palm Coast and Fernandina Beach, FL passed away May 12, 2009.
He was the son of the late John and Agnes Shwedo and brother of the late Jack Shwedo. Don was born in Tarrytown, NY. and graduated from White Plains High School. A graduate of Rutgers University in 1954, he was a member of the varsity football and golf teams. A Korean War veteran, he served as 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. Following a 9 year career with Chevrolet Motor Division in New York City, Mr. Shwedo was a new car dealer in Willoughby, OH, Reidsville, NC, and Fernandina Beach, FL.
Don was married 43 years to Sally Ann McCahill, his high school sweetheart. They lived in West Islip, NY, Columbus, OH, Moreland Hills, OH, Reidsville, NC, Concord, NC, Alpharetta, GA, Boca Raton, FL and Fernandina Beach, FL. They were predeceased by one son, Scott Francis Shwedo. After Sally's passing, Don married Karen Hower. The next 11 years they lived in Fernandina Beach, FL, Palm Coast, FL, and Atlantic Beach, FL. They were active in various ministries in the Catholic Church and enjoyed travels to Italy.
Don is survived by his wife Karen; daughter Mara and husband Major Pat Work; 5 sons, Col. Kevin Shwedo and wife Beth, Blair Shwedo and wife Laura, Col. B.J. Shwedo and wife Alison, Major Eric "Tubby" Shwedo and wife Suzanne, Reed Shwedo and wife Melody; 3 step children; Erika Magnuson, Tia Rivard and Maria Welsch, and 17 grandchildren.
A Mass celebration of Don's life that touched so many, will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Atlantic Beach, FL, on Monday, May 18, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 2400 Mayport Rd., Atlantic Beach, FL, 32233.

Rolando "Ron" Salmon
Rolando "Ron" Salmon, 45, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday morning, July 1, 2009.
He was born June 13, 1964 in El Salvador and moved to Fernandina Beach in 1968. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and was employed by the City of Jacksonville, Mosquito Control Division as a pilot. Ron was a devoted husband, father and son. He enjoyed spending time with his family, coaching his sons in sports, the beach and the Florida Gators.
He was predeceased by his brother, Carlos Salmon, Jr., and his father-in-law, Charlie Keen. Survivors include his wife, Janet Keen Salmon of Fernandina Beach, FL. Ron was her best friend and they had been together for 27 years and married for 16. Also surviving are his sons, Marshall and Riley Salmon of Fernandina Beach, FL; his parents, Dr. Carlos and Maria Salmon, also of Fernandina Beach; his mother-in-law, Miyo Keen of Yulee, FL; three sisters, Angela Salmon (Steve Giordanella) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Maria Begona Palencia of Jacksonville, FL and Erica Salmon of Fernandina Beach, FL; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter and Susie Keen of Jacksonville, FL, Raymond and Wendy Keen of Fernandina; many nieces, nephews, and cousins and several close friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, July 7, at St Michael's Catholic Church with Father Brian Eburn, celebrant. Interment will follow in Green Pine Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Green Pine Funeral Home.

Helen Johnson
Mrs. Helen Johnson, age 87, of Fernandina Beach, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, August 4, 2009 at her residence.
Born in Columbia, SC, she was the daughter of the late Calvin and Pearl Hiott Stanley.
Mrs. Johnson had lived and worked in the Tampa area for a number of years as a Welder and a Hairdresser. After meeting and marrying James Franklin Johnson in Tampa, FL they moved to Fairfax, VA. After settling in Fairfax, she and her husband owned and operated an RCA Television Retail Store. While living in Fairfax, she was active in the local Rotary Club, Square Dance Club and Bridge Club. Over the years, she made many trips to visit Fernandina Beach, where she settled in 1995. Mrs. Johnson was a Baptist by faith.
Preceding her in death is her husband, James F. Johnson.
She leaves behind, two nephews, Zachary Morris Johnson, Alma, GA, Lawton Johnson, St. Simons Island, GA, four nieces, Joyce Steeger, Fernandina Beach, FL, Jana Lott, Fernandina Beach, FL, June Walker, Waycross, GA, Jane Butler, Macon, GA and a special friend, Jeanette Cothern, Fernandina Beach, FL.
Funeral services will be today from the graveside in Rose Hill Cemetery, Alma, GA, as she is laid to rest beside her husband.

Norman W. Talamine, born July 14, 1922, passed away on May 3, 2002.
He was a 35 year member of the Fort Pierce Lions Club, Past President and recipient of the Melvin Jones Award Lions International, Lion of the Year. He also belonged to the Fort Pierce Elks Lodge #1520 for 15 years. He had been a Plant Manager for Rinker Materials for 15 years and worked for Indian River Armature for four years. He was a member of the St. Lucie County Historical Society and Auxiliary.
He was a loving husband to his wife of 25 years, Jackleen Talamine, Fort Pierce; a good father to eight children; two sons, Denny and Ken and six daughters, Kim Hamm, Cindy Stoddard, Norma Jean Brown, Anna Marie Van DeFord, Terry Rae Anderson and Janette Pitrillo; and grandfather to 19 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Friends may call on Friday, May 10, 2002, 4:00-7:00 P.M. at Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home. Services will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, May 11, 2002 at Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home Chapel.
