Mildred Evon Burkhead, 67, of Port St. Lucie, Florida died December 30, 2002. Mrs. Burkhead was born in Broadhead, Kentucky and came to Port St. Lucie in 1970 from Indianapolis, Indiana .
She was a Financial Officer in the aircraft industry and a member of the Worldwide Church of God.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Edward W. Burkhead, Port St. Lucie, Florida; daughter, Arletta Vance, Jensen Beach, Florida; sons, Daniel Burkhead, Port St. Lucie, florida, Thomas Burkhead, Seffner, Florida, Rocky Burkhead, Okeechobee, Florida; sisters, Evelyn Pierce, Loretta Eakin; brother, Harold Adams, all of Indianapolis, Indiana ; 9 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Friends may call Sunday, January 5, 2003, 2:00-3:00 P.M. at Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home. Services will follow at 3:00 P.M. with Pastor Larry Hinkle officiating.

Vera Selma Barron

Vera was born March 19, 1915, in Arkansas to Frank and Alice Wheelan. As a small child her family moved to Galena, Kansas. After completing her high school education and business school, she was accepted for a civil service job in Washington, DC. Her first position was with The Department of Agriculture. With the outbreak of WWII, Vera transferred to The Navy Department where she worked for the Under-Secretary of the Navy, James V. Forrestal. When he was appointed 1st Secretary of Defense, Vera went with him. She remained in this position through nine more Secretary of Defense. Illness forced her to retire while working for Secretary Robert McNamara.
During her Civil Service career, she married Gene Abbott, photographer for the Washington Star & Evening News. She and Gene enjoyed their years of retirement but she became restless and spent the next 10 years with the U. S. Savings and Loan League.
In 1974, Vera again retired and she and her beloved Gene moved to Port St. Lucie. They moved into the first home they ever owned. However, Gene took ill and died in 1978.
Vera filled her life with activities that led to her meeting John Barron, a retired Commander, USN. They married in 1979. With John a part of her life their social life was a whirlwind. Her life again changed when John died in October, 1984.
Vera worked tirelessly for her community and church. She gave generously of her time and contributions to numerous organizations as well as the Republican Party.
Vera is survived by nephews Martie Wheelan of Joplin, Missouri and Paul Wheelan of Miami, Oklahoma, niece Barbara Klieves of Joplin, Missouri. Also her Godson Chris Neal of Heber City, Utah.
Vera was a member of The Indian River Presbyterian Church. She will be missed by so many who proudly called her friend, but then as Vera said many times “nothing stays the same.”

Donna Elaine Crislip

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Crislip, daughter, Susan O’Donoghue, granddaughter, Elisha Marie, her father, Oscar Hanson and mother, Gladys Hanson.

Mrs. Cashion was born in Port Au Prince, Haiti, where her father was stationed with the U.S. Navy, and moved to Ft. Pierce when she was a child. She was the grand-daughter of Nils C. Jorgensen & Annie Christiansen Jorgensen, they were early Danish Settlers to White City, FL. Her maternal grandfather, John W. Hodge, was one of the first superintendents for the St. Lucie County School System.
She was a bookkeeper for Trans State Dredging Company for 16 years, and graduate of Massey Business College in Jacksonville, FL.
Survivors include her daughter, Paula A. Mascara of Ft. Pierce, FL; son, John W. Jones (Paulette) of Ft. Pierce, FL; sisters, Dorothy Russ of Edgewater, FL, and Joyce Coman of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Robert William Jones of Fayetteville, NC, Jeffrey Alan Jones of Fayetteville, NC, Michael Scott Mascara of Ft. Pierce, FL, and Brittany Nicole Mascara of Ft. Pierce, FL; great-grandchild, Joseph A. Jones of Fayetteville, NC; she was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Lundak, and her parents, Nils (N.W.) & Beatrice Jorgensen.

He was a native of Hagerstown, MD; he grew up in Washington, DC and came here from North Palm Beach, FL in 1978.
Prior to retirement he was a Chief Airport Traffic Controller at Palm Beach International Airport from 1948-1959. Subsequently he served overseas as an International Aviation Services Officer in Europe, Asia, Central, and South America and the Caribbean while on assignment to the US State Department. He received commendations from the governments of Thailand, Greece, Peru, and Brazil.
Concluding his overseas assignments he was awarded a Sustained Superior Performance Award by the Federal Aviation Agency.
Claybourne served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marines Corps. He attended Maryland University, National University, and the FAA Academy at Oklahoma City.
Survivors include his sons, Michael and wife Jean of Huntsville, AL, and Stephen and wife Helen of Anderson, SC; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances.

He was also an avid NASCAR, Atlanta Braves, and Kentucky Wildcats fan.
Survivors include his wife Marita Joseph Phillips of Ft. Pierce, FL; sons, Jamie Phillips of Ft. Pierce, FL, Michael Phillips of New Smyrna Beach, FL, David Phillips of Ft. Pierce, FL; daughter, Rebecca Phillips of Ft. Pierce, FL; sisters, Eugenia Elaine Phillips Lakes of Richmond, KY, Lana Cheryl Phillips Higdon of Raleigh, NC, and Teresa Karen Phillips Roberts of McAndrews, KY; granddaughter, Kayla Shea Phillips and her mother, Kellie Shay Phillips; and was predeceased by his parents, Blake & Freda Phillips.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Lorraine D. Vannoy of Ft. Pierce, FL; daughters, Bonnie Lundy of Niangua, MO, Denise Combs and husband Michael of Fleetwood, NC, and Dorothy Buxton of Ft. Pierce, FL; son, Dennis Vannoy and wife Terri of Fleetwood, NC; sisters, Violet Vannoy of Fleetwood, NC, Iris Watson of Deep Gap, NC, and Dawn Houck of Fleetwood, NC; brothers, Leonard and Jay Vannoy both of Winston Salem, NC; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and he was preceded in death by his son, Ronnie Vannoy and sister, Christine Leonard.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, John J. Sullivan, two daughters, Dianne Sullivan of Atlanta, and Patti (Chris) Maloof of Atlanta; three sons, Michael (Tina) Sullivan of Plant City, Tim Sullivan of Jupiter, and Shawn (Caitlin) Sullivan of St. Lucie West; two grandchildren, Susan and John; and sister, Katie Gaddis of Roswell, GA.
