Helene R. Bolden

Helene Rita Bolden, 62, of Englewood, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005.

She was born icon Nov. 24, 1942, in McKeesport, Pa., to Martin and Margaret Anne Lyons.

Helene made her family home in the Englewood area for the past 32 years. Helene's love of her family gave her children a wonderful mother, best friend and enduring mentor. She instilled values of kindness, compassion and courage. She touched countless people with her generosity, her willingness to just listen and her open-door policy to friends in need.

She is survived by her mother, Margaret Anne Lyons; her children, Karen Bolden of Englewood, Leslie A. Bolden, Brett Bolden of North Huntingdon, Pa., and Bridgette Ahlers of Placida, Fla.; three granddaughters, Blair Bolden, Brea Bolden and Elizabeth Ahlers; her brothers, John P. Lyons, Martin A. Lyons, Lawrence R. Lyons, Thomas M. Lyons, Eugene P. Lyons, Joseph V. Lyons and Daniel P. Lyons; sisters, Mary Jo Batley, Cecilia Lyons and Margaret Anne Warden; 23 nieces and nephews; many cousins; great-nieces and great-nephews; and dear friends.

A memorial service and celebration of Helene's life will be on the South Beach of Englewood (public beach by the horseshoe pit), from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005.

Donations and flowers may be sent to 97 Lakeview Lane, Englewood, FL 34223.

Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Theresa V. Carroll

Theresa Virginia (Arnesen) Wynn Carroll, 72, of Cumb City, Tenn., and formerly of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at Select Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.

She was born icon Nov. 8, 1932, in Bradenton, Fla., to Orville Arnesen and Leaty Harris Arnesen.

Mrs. Carroll was a seamstress.

She is survived by her spouse, John Carroll of Cumb City; sons, John W. Wynn, E. Richard Wynn, both of Myakka City, Fla., W. Joseph Wynn and Avery B. Wynn, both of Sarasota, Fla.; daughter, Barbara Altman of Wauchula, Fla.; stepdaughter, Theresa Cooper of Lakeland, Fla.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, and from 8 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at the chapel of Nave Funeral Home in Erin, Tenn., with the Rev. Ricky Graves officiating. Burial will be at Cumb City Cemetery in Cumb City.

Arrangements are by Nave Funeral Home, Erin.

William A. Griffin

William Albert Griffin, 61, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in a hospital in Fresno, Calif.

He was born icon Jan. 25, 1943, in Colden, N.Y.

Mr. Griffin served in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietname War.

He is survived by his mother, June E. Griffin; wife, Trudy Griffin; sons, William Robert Griffin of Madera, Calif., Brian James Griffin of Del Ray, Calif., and Heather Lee Griffin of Fresno; and brothers, Ronald F. Griffin of Fresno and Michael J. Griffin and Robert G. Griffin, both of Punta Gorda. He was preceded in death by his brother, Lauro J. Griffin of Punta Gorda.

A memorial service will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at Friends United Methodist Church in Tropical Gulf Acres, Fla. Services will be in Fresno.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 992 Tamiami Trail, Unit C-2, Port Charlotte, FL 33953.

Arrangements are by Cremation Society of Central California, Fresno.

Francis E. Starkey

Francis E. Starkey, 89, of North Port, Fla., and formerly of Tonawanda, N.Y., passed away Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans Nursing Home of Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born icon July 22, 1915, in Tonawanda, N.Y.

Mr. Starkey served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars 8208 in North Port.

Mr. Starkey is survived by his daughter, Judith (Ronald) Brown of North Port; son, Richard M. (Sylvia) Starkey of Port Charlotte; five grandchildren, Susan, Deanna, Mark, John and Richard; six great-grandchildren, Christopher, Paul, Ashley, Matthew, Amber and Zackery; and one great-great-grandchild, Ariana. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby M. Starkey.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

John Suhaka

John Suhaka, 80, of North Port, Fla., and a longtime resident of Charlotte County, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005.

He was the son of John and Sadie (Kabalinsky) Suhaka, born icon May 14, 1924, in New York, N.Y.

John served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in Europe, Africa, and the Pacific. He was a zone sergeant with the New York State Police Troop C, and served several years with the New York State Bureau of Criminal Investigation. John moved to Port Charlotte in 1982, from Naples, Fla., and attended St. Paul's Anglican Church. He was a member of Kingsway Country Club, an Elk member, and he was a member of the Bobcat Trail Golf Club.

John will be greatly missed by his wife of 41 years, Eileen; grandchildren, Leeds, Diana and Greg, all of Corvallis, Ore.; great-grandchildren, McKenna, Kylie, Jesse, and Jasmine, all of Corvallis; sister, Helen (Denny) Barbier of Banning, Calif.; and a niece, Donna Daughtery of Cherry Valley, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his son, John Leeds Suhaka.

A memorial service in celebration of John's life will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at the Punta Gorda chapel of Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services.

Sophie V. Bodin

Sophie V. Bodin, 98, of Charlotte Harbor, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at Charlotte Harbor Health Care.

She was born icon July 13, 1906, in New York, N.Y.

Sophie is survived by her son, Robert A. Bodin of Port Charlotte, Fla.; granddaughter, Linda Hebert; and great-granddaughter, Meghan Dallaire of Seminole, Fla.

Services and Burial will be held at Florida Memorial Gardens in Rockledge, Fla., at a later date.

Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Port Charlotte.

George Gilmore

George E. Gilmore, 72, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger Funeral Home, Punta Gorda Chapel.

Paul N. Hoffman

Paul N. Hoffman, 80, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Nov. 10, 2004 at his residence.

He was born icon March 6, 1924, in Williamsport, Pa.

Mr. Hoffman was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corp in the Pacific. He was a retiree of Swift & Company, and also worked for the Schnadig Co. in Pennsylvania. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 844 in Williamsport, and a member of the United Methodist Church in Port Charlotte. He moved to Port Charlotte in August 1984 from Montoursville, Pa.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Dorothy; sister, Marian Hodge of Pennsylvania; and nieces and nephews.

National Cremation Society of Venice is in charge of arrangements.

Mary P. Morse

Mary P. Morse, 94, of Fort Myers, Fla., and formerly of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004.

Mary was born icon May 3, 1910, in Weymouth, Mass., to John W. Ahern and Elizabeth Leary-Ahern.

Mary majored in music at Boston University, with an emphasis on piano. She and her husband, Edwin O. Morse, moved to Punta Gorda 25 years ago from Arlington, Mass.

During her years in Punta Gorda, she was a parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and she was an avid golfer. Later, she moved to Fort Myers.

She is survived by her children, Linda Morse of Fort Myers, John Morse of North Hampton, N.H., and Peter Morse of South Jordan, Utah; and three grandchildren, Steve Morse of Brighton, Mass., Andrew Morse of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Courtney Morse of Boston, Mass. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin.

A memorial Mass will be held in Mary's honor at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church on Sunrise Drive in Fort Myers.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Hope Hospice, 9470 Health Park Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908.

Eleanora Smith

Eleanora Smith, 82, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Thursday, Jan 6, 2005, at the Punta Gorda Elderly Care Center.

She was born icon June 10, 1922, in Carthage, Mo.

Eleanora was a bookkeeper/accountant for most of her adult life.

She is survived by eight nieces and nephews and their immediate families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Smith.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at Kays-Ponger Funeral Home, 635 E. Marion Ave, Punta Gorda. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Rev. Joseph Donthett officiating.

Interment will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at the Hillsboro Cemetery in Brandon, Fla.

Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger Funeral Home, Punta Gorda Chapel.

Maudie L. Wilson

Maudie L. Wilson, 74, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at home.

She was born icon Jan. 13, 1930, in Columbia, Ala.

Maudie was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys football fan and loved her animals.

She is survived by two daughters, Sheila Anderson and Sharon L. Kelsey, both of Punta Gorda; three granddaughters, Brooke Kelsey, Ashley LeBlanc and Michaela Snow; and one great-granddaughter, Derricka Jones.

Services will be private.

Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger Funeral Home, Punta Gorda Chapel.

Samuel Cass

Samuel Cass, 100, of Englewood, Fla., died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, in Englewood. Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Daniel J. Cockrell

Daniel J. Cockrell, 83, of Englewood, Fla., died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at his Sarasota County residence. Englewood Community Funeral Home has been selected to handle arrangements.

Maria Pinter

Maria Pinter, 69, of North Port, Fla., died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at home. Arrangements are by James A. McKee Funeral Homes, North Port.

Mary Jane Hahn

Mary Jane Hahn, 81, of Arcadia, Fla., died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005.

She was born icon Dec. 3, 1923, in Arcadia.

MAry was lifelong resident of Arcadia and worked as a maintenance person at the DeSoto County Courthouse. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a sister, Hazel Hope of Arcadia; a nephew, David Hope of Arcadia; nieces, Jane Hope Parker of Arcadia and Sandy Bloom Budd of Treasure Island, Fla.

Visitation is 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home in Arcadia with graveside funeral services and Burial to follow at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia.

Arrangements are by Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia.

Ansel J. McCranie

Ansel Jack (A.J.) "Mr. Red" McCranie, 82, of Palmetto, Fla., and formerly of Arcadia, Fla., died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at home.

He was born icon Jan. 16, 1922, in Faceville, Ga.

"Mr. Red" was the owner of Manatee Home Supply. In 1946, he began servicing the community of Arcadia. He moved to Arcadia in 1986 and managed Mather's Furniture Store for 10 years. He often spoke about his wonderful friends in Arcadia, who truly enriched his life.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; daughters, Deborah Tindall LaChapelle and Beverly Saver; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at Parrish United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations can be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Arrangements are by ICS Cremation Society, Harbour Heights, Fla.
