Saintanie Chery

Saintanie Chery, 88, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at H.Q.M. of Port Charlotte.

She was born icon Aug. 4, 1917, in Jacmel, Haiti.

A retired flea-market food supplies saleswoman, Saintanie moved from Yonkers, N.Y., to Port Charlotte in June of 2001. She was a member of Eben-Ezer Haitian Baptist Church of Port Charlotte.

Survivors include her five beloved children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; daughters, Ivianna Barolette of Port Charlotte, Carmen Michel and Martina Chery Francisque, both of Queens, N.Y., and sons, Daniel Bouzy of Philadelphia, Pa., and Emmanuel Chery of Haiti; granddaughters, Rosephara Bouzy of Port Charlotte, Rachelle and Sandra Chery, both of Long Island, N.Y.; grandsons, Wilkens Barolette of North Port, Fla., Patrice Barolette of Queens, N.Y. and Irvelt Barolette of Snellville, Ga.; and great-grandchildren, Sarah, Olivier and Justin Barolette, all of North Port.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with an evening prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday, May 5, 2006, at Roberson Funeral Home, 2151 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2006, at Eben-Ezer Haitian Baptist Church, 17195 Oakleaf Ave., Port Charlotte. Entombment with committal services will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens cemetery in Port Charlotte.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Geneva L. Dickelman

Geneva L. Dickelman, 81, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Thursday, April 27, 2006.

She was born icon July 18, 1924, in Hot Springs, Ark., to Sidney and Cora Lee (McMillian) Brown.

Geneva moved from Chelsea, Mich., to Punta Gorda in 1982. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Chelsea. Geneva was a loving mother and enjoyed the company of her friends and family.

She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Jane (James) Zollicoffer of Cabot, Ark.; sons, Donald L. (Bonnie) of Fort Smith, Ark., and Lee A. of Crested Butte, Colo.; sister, Lillian Smith of Westville, Ind.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Geneva was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Edwin Dickelman.

No services are planned at this time.

Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services Punta Gorda Chapel.

William Taylor

William Taylor, 67, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Friday, April 21, 2006, at his Charlotte County residence. Englewood Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service has been selected to handle arrangements.

Gregory Van Dyke

Gregory "Greg" Van Dyke, 56, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Monday, April 24, 2006.

He was born icon June 4, 1949, in Gainesville, Fla.

Mr. Van Dyke attended Valley Forge military Academy in Valley Forge, Pa., and graduated from the Kentucky military Institute of Louisville, Ky. He moved to Punta Gorda in 1967 from Louisville, and was a life insurance salesman in the local area. Mr. Van Dyke had a love for water sports and collecting crystal. He was of the Presbyterian faith.

He will be greatly missed by his father, Carroll Van Dyke of Madison, Ohio; sisters, Carol and Lynda Van Dyke of Defuniak Springs, Fla.; uncle, Lee and aunt, Loretta Gerwin of Venice; special friend, Sandy Devisse; and many very close friends.

Services will be private.

The family requests donations in Greg's memory be made to TideWell Hospice and Palliative Care 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Russell R. Colisto

Russell Raymond "Rut" Colisto, 54, of Rotonda West, Fla., died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at his home.

Mr. Colisto worked for the Kurtz Roofing Company, was a bartender and drove limousines in Philadelphia, Pa., before moving to Florida seven years ago. He was employed at Anthony Leonard Roofing Company in Englewood. Rut loved to ride his motorcycle and play pool.

Survivors include his wife of seven years, Carol Ann (Sborlini) Colisto and a daughter, Colleen Knittel, both of Rotonda West; a son, Peter Jacquinto of Sarasota, Fla.; two sisters, Susan Olson of Englewood, Fla., and Carolyn Drake of Bridgeport, Pa.; one brother, Samuel Colisto of Philadelphia, Pa.; five additional children in Philadelphia, Pa.; and several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at the Englewood Community Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 3070 South McCall Road, with Pastor Bryon Morgan of the Christian Life Center, officiating.

Englewood Community Funeral Home & Cremation Services have been selected to handle arrangements.

Mildred L. Garvey

Mildred L. Garvey 83, died Thursday, April 27, 2006 at her residence in Rotonda West, (Charlotte County) Fla.

She was born icon March 20, 1923, in Galesburg, Ill., to David Z. and Margery (Glenn) Field.

She moved to the Englewood area in 1979 from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jackson (Harold) of Rotonda West, her son, Thomas Garvey (Teresa Lunt) of Palo Alto, Calif.; two sisters, Patricia Zawadski of Las Vegas, Nev., Barbara McGlone of Fort Belvior, Va.; five grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Christina Garvey; and her son-in-law, Raymond Torres. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas, her daughter, Susan Torres and her son, Robert Garvey.

A visitation will be held Monday, May 1, 2006, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and a funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Burial to follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Park in Englewood.

Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel, has been selected to handle the arrangements.

Penny L. Griffin

Penny Leigh Griffin, 45, of Palm Island, Fla., died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at her Charlotte County residence.

She was born icon Oct. 27, 1960, in Indianapolis, Ind., to Raymond and Shirley (Shelton) Dilley.

Mrs. Griffin moved from Indiana to Florida 20 years ago. She was a housekeeper at the Palm Island Resort and enjoyed shelling and fishing.

Penny is survived by her husband of 19 years, Wayne Griffin of Palm Island; her parents of Syracuse, Ind.; three sisters, Lynn Miller of Ligonier, Ind.; Arlene Bechtold of Englewood, Fla.; Grace Bee of Lafayette, Ind.; three brothers, Gary Dilley of Englewood, Dean Dilley of Lafayette, Ind., and Timothy Dilley of Osceola, Ind.; and several loving nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until services at 7 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2006, at the Englewood Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 3070 South McCall Road. Inurnrment will be private.

Englewood Community Funeral Home and Cremation Service has been selected to handle the arrangements.

Mary C. Kroesen

1924 ~ 2006

Mary Catherine Kroesen, 81, died Monday, April 17, 2006, at her residence. A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 5, 2006, at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Grove City, Fla.

Friends are welcome to attend.

Nancy A. Mierke

Nancy A. Mierke, 73, of North Port, Fla., passed away Sunday, April 23, 2006.

She was born icon Aug. 26, 1932, in Albany, N.Y. and moved to the area in 1999 from Temple, Pa. She was an office manager for Foster Pet Food Company. Mrs. Mierke was Catholic and served in the U.S. Air Force. She was a charter member of the Women's Memorial Foundation.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph of North Port; a son, Mark Conger of Neptune, N.J.; a stepdaughter, Christine Mierke of Lyons, N.Y.; a brother, Russell Brother of Albany, N.Y.; and a sister, Mary Jean Canfora of Hudson, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2006 at Farley Funeral Home, North Port chapel. Friends may visit anytime online at www.farleyfuneralhome.com to sign a register book and extend condolences to the Mierke family.

Arrangements are by Farley Funeral Home, North Port Chapel.

Andrew H. Garner Jr.

Andrew Henry "Andy" Garner Jr., 72, of Arcadia, Fla., died Friday, April 28, 2006.

He was born icon Dec. 2, 1933, in Arcadia.

The lifelong resident of Arcadia was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a welding instructor for 27 years at the DeSoto Correctional Institution and for 41 years at DeSoto County High School. Andy loved playing bluegrass music and was a member of the Tater Hill Band for over 20 years, playing the steel guitar and the five-string acoustical guitar. The band took its music across America. Andy was past president of the Florida Peace Officers Association. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and past master of the Arcadia Masonic Lodge 66 in Arcadia. Andy and the Tater Hill Band had an abiding love for the Special Olympics and performed many fundraising concerts to advance the cause of Special Olympics. Andy liked to make cane syrup from his own cane patch he grew next to his home. He attended Brownville Baptist Church in Brownville, Fla.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Garner of Arcadia; son Andrew Burton (Amy Lynn) of Arcadia; daughters, Melody Garner, Carson, Calif., and Elizabeth Andrea "Beth" (Naro) Negrete of Arcadia; sister, Virginia Blackmon of Arcadia; grandchildren, Brandon Weisbaum of Norwalk, Calif., Reno and Ashley Negrete, and Dylan Garner, all of Arcadia.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, May 1 at Ponger-Kays-Grady Chapel, 50 No. Hillsborough Ave., Arcadia. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at the Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. William A. Martin officiating. Burial is at Joshua Creek Cemetery. Masonic Lodge 66 will render Masonic rites at the graveside.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to TideWell Hospice and Palliative Care, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238 or to the Special Olympics in care of ARC DeSoto, P.O. Box 787, Nocatee, FL 34268

Philip C. Miller, 80, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Punta Gorda, Fla.

Frank A. Spratt III

Frank Allen Spratt III, 60, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006.

He was born icon May 13, 1946, in Staten Island, N.Y.

Frank was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and served on the aircraft carrier, USS Kiersarge, during the Vietnam conflict.

Frank is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Christine Spratt of Port Charlotte; his sons, Shane Spratt of Port Charlotte and Frank Spratt IV of Staten Island; his daughter, Lillian "Lee" Spratt; grandson, Anthony Spratt of Staten Island; and his brothers, Barton Spratt of Staten Island, Mark Spratt of Simi Valley, Calif., and Alfred Fryer of Pensacola, Fla.

Arrangements are by Fred Hunter's Inc.

Hazel C. Waggoner

Hazel C. Waggoner, 84, of Crossville, Tenn., died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006.

She was born icon Aug. 16, 1922, in Punta Gorda, Fla.

Mrs. Waggoner was a homemaker and a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church in Interlachen, Fla.

She is survived by her daughters, Iris Graham of Tacoma, Wash., and Kim Craig of Cincinnati, Ohio; sons, Richard Waggoner of Naples, Fla., Dean Waggoner of Crossville and Irvin Waggoner of Greer, S.C.; brothers, Grady Mills of Port Bolivar, Texas, and Kelly Mills of Melrose, Fla.; sister, Sarah Cates of Wichita Falls, Texas; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleyo Amuel Waggoner.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, at the chapel of the Chimes of Williams-Thomas Funeral Home, 404 N. Main St., Gainesville, Fla., with The Rev. Dennis McOmber, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Florida National Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Williams-Thomas Funeral Home, Gainesville.

Jane B. Barber

Jane B. Barber, 86, of Englewood (Charlotte County), Fla., died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006.

She was born icon Dec. 12, 1919, in LeRoy, N.Y.

Mrs. Barber owned and operated Barber's Hotel in LeRoy. She was a member of the National Music Fraternity, Sigma Alpha Iota. She moved from LeRoy to the Englewood area in 1977, where she was a volunteer for 15 years at Englewood Community Hospital and a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church.

Mrs. Barber is survived by her three sons, William of Englewood, and Thomas and James, both of LeRoy; daughter, Martha J. McCombs of Tucson, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Englewood. Inurnment will be at Gulf Pines Memorial Park in Englewood.

Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, 770 Kilbourne Ave., Englewood, FL 34223; or Englewood Beach Villa's Women's Association, 2000 Bayview Drive, Englewood, FL 34223.

Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Homes, Englewood Chapel.

George J. Karhan

George J. Karhan, 76, of Englewood, Fla., died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, at his home. Arrangements are by ICS Cremation Society Inc., Harbour Heights, Fla.

Walter Paul

Walter (nee Poleschuk) Paul, 83, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006.

He was born icon Dec. 20, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Mr. Paul served in the Merchant Marine and the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was a graduate of Rhodes High School and Dyke and Spencerian College. Mr. Paul worked in sales and marketing. He was a 32nd Degree Mason.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Lynn; son, Lawrence (Pamela) Paul; daughters, Shirley Miller of Sebastian, Fla., and Donna (Wayne) Miller of The Villages, Fla.; sister, Roselind Robb of Pompano Beach, Fla.; brother, John Tacejko of Cleveland; stepchildren, Belinda (Jay) Breidenbach of Boise, Idaho, Pieter (Fatima) Seidel and Eric (Dana) Seidel of Atlanta, Ga., and Tad (Michele) Seidel of Tampa, Fla.; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be private.

Arrangements are by National Cremation, North Fort Myers, Fla.

William R. Scott

William R. Scott, 53, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Friday, Aug. 25, 2006.

He was born icon Oct. 14, 1952, in Rochester, N.Y.

Mr. Scott served in the U.S. Army as a door gunner during the Vietname War. He moved to the Englewood area in 1968 from Rochester. Mr. Scott was a truck driver for Consolidated Freight Way of Fort Myers, Fla. He was a member of the Moose in Englewood and the Englewood Eagles.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; sons, Billy (Cindy) and Robby, both of Naples, Fla.; mother, Lillian (Stanley) Kristoff of Englewood; sisters, Donna (Denis) Panepinto of Englewood, Betty (Don) Jubenville of Rochester, Linda (Peter) Charowhas of Manhattan, Kan., and Carol (John) Martin of Canyon Country, Calif.; brother, Michael (Elsa) of Santee, Calif.; and two granddaughters, Ashley and Madison.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006, at the V.F.W., 550 N. McCall Road, Englewood.
