Louis H. Childers

Louis H. Childers, 80, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at Charlotte Harbor Healthcare in Port Charlotte.

He was born icon Feb. 27, 1924, in Buchanan, Ky.

Mr. Childers served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a retired steel mill worker. He moved to Port Charlotte in 1976 from Millersville, Md., and worked at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Childers of Port Charlotte; two daughters, Melonie Wagner of Port Charlotte and Joy Medina of Kenosha, Wis.; three sons, Louis Childers of Columbus, Ohio, Alan Childers and Millard Childers, both of Port Charlotte; two brothers, William Childers of Maryland, and Carl Childers of Kentucky; two sisters, Joann Bryant and Elizabeth Newsom, both of Kentucky; and seven grandchildren.

There will be a memorial Mass at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at San Antonio Catholic Church. Inurnment will be held at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Harriet V. Combs

Harriet V. Combs, 92, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Friday, Dec. 24, 2004.

She was born icon June 10, 1912, in Harrisburg, W.Va.

She moved to Florida in 1999 from Illinois. Mrs. Combs was a retired physical therapist and was a member of Christ Community United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Dixon of Punta Gorda; sons, Charles of Surprise, Ariz., Leonard of Lakeville, Ind., and Leslie of Enterprise, Ala.; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Combs was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Charles.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ Community United Methodist Church, 27000 Sunnybrook Road, Harbour Heights, FL 33983.

Theresa Duffey

Theresa "Tina" Duffey, 42, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004.

She was the daughter of Joe and Betty (Sitko) Palozzolo, born icon Aug. 22, 1962, in Chicago, Ill. Tina was the former owner of Erika's in Chicago and a member of First United Methodist Church of Punta Gorda.

Tina will be greatly missed by her husband, Patrick; parents, Joe and Betty Palozzolo of Port Charlotte, Fla.; daughter, Erika (Les) Hickson of Punta Gorda; brothers, Anthony (Beverly) Palozzolo of North Carolina, and Wayne (Marietta) Palozzolo of Port Charlotte; her special angel, Jeff Cox of North Carolina, and especially Jon.

A memorial service in celebration of Tina's life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at the Punta Gorda chapel of Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services, with the Rev. Valerie Piotrowsky

Valerie Piotrowsky, 48, of North Port, Fla., passed away Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004.

She was born icon Dec. 21, 1956, in Phillipsburg, N.J., and moved to this area in 1992 from Glen Gardner, N.J.

She was a graduate of Belvidere High School. Valerie was employed at the Waffle House in Venice, Fla.

She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Vicente of Port Charlotte, Fla.; mother and stepfather, Barbara and George Allen of Belvidere, N.J.; father and stepmother, Chester and Darlene Smolenski of Oxford, N.J.; sisters, Gerri Lynn Calvin of Harmony, N.J., and Sharon Fults of Houston, Texas; and granddaughter, Sierra Vicente.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at Sonshine Baptist Church, Veterans Blvd., Port Charlotte.

Richard A. Dickinson

Richard A. Dickinson, 50, of Arcadia, Fla., died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004.

He was born icon Jan. 13, 1954, in Windsor, Vt., and was the son of Frank and Vera (Potwin) Dickinson.

Richard spent most of his lifetime in North Pomfret, Vt., and attended elementary school in East Bridgewater, Mass., and high school in Woodstock, Vt. He worked with his father in construction for many years after high school. In 1989 he moved to Arcadia, where he continued to work in construction. He lived in Arcadia for 15 years. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and his dogs.

Richard is survived by his parents of Arcadia and formerly of North Pomfret, Vt.; one son, Derek; two daughters, Renee and Crystal; one sister, Lenoura (Ronald) Vezina of Windsor; a brother, Paul Dickinson of Barnard, Vt.; a significant other, Nancy Richmond of Arcadia; two nieces, Michele Shepherd of Windsor and Malisa Williams of Brownsville, Vt.; two great-nieces and two great-nephews; many aunts and uncles; and more than 100 cousins.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at Pine Creek Chapel, State Road 72, Arcadia.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to DeSoto Memorial Hospital, P.O. Box 2180, Arcadia, FL 34266.

Floyd E. Collins

Floyd E. Collins, 88, of Port Charlotte, Fla., and formerly of Tipton, Ind., died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at Tipton County Memorial Hospital.

He was born icon Sept. 25, 1915, in Menlow, Iowa.

Mr. Collins married Lorraine Mooney on Aug. 21, 1937. He worked for 46 years at Pioneer Hi-Bred Seed Company, serving as the president of the eastern division from 1975 until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Punta Gorda, Fla., Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Punta Gorda Isles Yacht Club, and Punta Gorda Country Club.

Mr. Collins is survived by his wife, Lorraine; two sons, Stephen Hardy (Lynn) Collins of Tipton and Thomas Floyd (Victoria) Collins of Las Vegas, Nev.; one daughter, Janice Lee (James Allen) Fambrough of Dahlonega, Ga.; one brother, Donald Truman (Dee Philabaum) Collins of Green Valley, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the funeral at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at Kemp United Methodist Church, 228 N. Main St., Tipton, with the Rev. Mark Ingle presiding. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Tipton.

Helen M. DeJager

Helen Maddock DeJager, 91, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at her residence.

She was born icon Sept. 19, 1913, in Battle Creek, Mich., to Henry Percival Maddock and Florence Boyce Maddock.

Mrs. DeJager moved to Punta Gorda in 1979 from Ridgewood, N.J. She retired as a musician who once taught voice and piano at Greensboro College for Women in Greensboro, N.C., from 1937 to 1941. She was also a professional soloist and recitalist in the Tri-City area for many years. She was a graduate of the University of Rochester and the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. Mrs. DeJager received her bachelor's degree in Music in 1935, Performance and Voice degree in 1936 and her master's degree in Music in 1938. She was a member of Port Charlotte United Methodist Church, where she was chair of the music committee for many years. She taught Sunday school and played piano for the youth groups of the church. She also was a member of Mu Phi Epsilon Music Honor Society, Minsceongo Yacht Club of Stony Point, N.Y., the U.S. Power Squadron of Punta Gorda and Ridgewood and the Religious Society of Friends of Farmington, N.Y.

She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Harold R. DeJager of Punta Gorda; two daughters, Sylvia (Michael) Meyers of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Shirley (George Jr.) DiLullo of Drums, Pa.; a son, Paul (Nancy) DeJager of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Marion Milne of Fairport, Pa.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services at Port Charlotte United Methodist Church will be held at a later date. Memorial services will be held in New York with interment in White Haven Cemetery in Pittsford, N.Y.

Del'trone D. Gomillia

Del'trone Dionne Gomillia, 21, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004. He was born icon April 6, 1983 in Port Charlotte and lived his whole life here.

He graduated from Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda, Fla., and attended Abundant Life Assembly of God and Macedonia Church, both in Punta Gorda. Del'trone played for the Pop Warner Charlotte Warriors as a young man, and was an assistant manager for Spike's Super Lube. He was known for being very loving and unselfish and was an all-around hero, and earned an acknowledgment by the Do The Right Thing program. He gave his life in saving others.

Del'trone will be greatly missed by his mother, Kimberly Gipson of Port Charlotte; father, Erna Gomillia Sr. of Tallahassee, Fla.; daughter, Jada Marie Gomillia and special friend, Brieann Countryman, both of Daytona Beach, Fla.; brother LyNeal (Tara) Gomillia of Indiana; sisters, Tonya Sue Gomillia of Ellenton, Fla., and Tiffany Gipson of Port Charlotte; six great-aunts; one great-uncle; 10 aunts; eight uncles; grandmother, Donna Gipson of Laurel, Fla.; grandfathers, Jack Walczak and CW (Lillian) Gomillia, both of Punta Gorda; nephews, Collin Gomillia of Indiana and Dietrich Reyes of Ellenton; nieces, Tryniti McKnight of Ellenton, and Ashlynn Gomillia of Indiana; Earl Gipson Sr. of North Port, Fla., who helped raise him; six stepbrothers, one stepsister; Norman Partlow Jr. who loved him as his own son; Grandma Partlow of Philadelphia, Pa., and Pop Mason of Punta Gorda who loved and guided him; godfathers, William Jones Jr. of Punta Gorda and Ronnie Gamble of Port Charlotte; numerous other relatives; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, grandmother, Donna Walczak and his grandfather, James Arrowood; and grandfather, George Gipson Sr.; his paternal grandmother, Daisy Mae Gomillia; great-aunt, Myrtis Beasley; and great-uncle, Jimmie Beasley Sr.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at the Punta Gorda Chapel of Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services. The service in celebration of Del'trone's life will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at the Port Charlotte Seventh Day Adventist Church. Carroll J. Hennessy

Carroll Joseph Hennessy, 87, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, Fla.

He was born icon Dec. 18, 1916, in New York City, N.Y.

Mr. Hennessy served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as an accounting clerk for a food manufacturer. Mr. Hennessy moved from Elmsford, N.Y. to the Port Charlotte area 26 years ago. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 2153 in Port Charlotte, Eucharistic Minister at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church where he was also a member, and a past treasurer of the Pregnancy Crisis Careline.

Mr. Hennessy is survived by his loving wife, Susan (Howard) Hennessy of Port Charlotte; sons, Joseph (Linda) Hennessy of Madison, N.J., David (Karen) Hennessy of West Boylston, Mass., Donald (Camille) Hennessy of White Plains, N.Y., and James (Maureen) Hennessy of Bronxville, N.Y.; daughters, Kathleen (Patrick) Moran of Pleasantville, N.Y., and Susan (William) Bryan of St. Petersburg, Fla.; son-in-law, John Cristello of Elmsford; and 15 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Eileen Cristello; and brothers, Thomas, Edward, Paul and Charles Hennessy.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 2500 Easy St., Port Charlotte.

Anne B. Carson, 94, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004. Arrangements are by ICS Cremation Society Inc., Cape Coral, Fla.

Ruth L. Flaherty

Ruth Louise Flaherty, 76, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly of Massachusetts died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004.

She was born icon March 18, 1928, in Lowell, Mass.

Ruth served on the board of Visually Impaired Persons of Charlotte County.

She is survived by her brothers, William Grover of Haverhill, Mass., and Kenneth Grover of Ocean Park, Wash.; sister, Betty Ann Fear of Columbus, Ind., and their families; her late brother's family of Groton, Mass.; her children, Dorothy Blake of La Crescenta, Calif., Robert Wheeler of Pamona, Calif., Patricia Winchenbach of Friendship, Maine, Thomas Cann of Cooper City, Fla., James Wheeler of Ayer, Mass., and Susan Almquist of Mound, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Grover.

A brief memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Pelican Harbor Park Clubhouse in Punta Gorda.

Glenn L. Halpain

Glenn Leonard Halpain, 69, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital, Port Charlotte.

He was born icon April 22, 1935, in Vernon, Texas.

Glenn was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He moved from Sarasota, Fla., to Port Charlotte 35 years ago. He was the retired owner and operator of Glenn's Pest Control of Port Charlotte. He was a member of Abundant Life Assembly of God Church of Punta Gorda.

He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Oberia Halpain of Port Charlotte; two daughters, Betty Martin of Crofton, Ky., and Phyllis (Johnny) Boyd of Hopkinsville, Ky.; a son, Michael (Sheiry) Halpain of Indianapolis, Ind.; a sister, Linda Edrington of Princeton, Ky.; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Nell Halpain; and his maternal grandparents who helped raise him, S.M. and Pearlee Kenney.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Roberson Funeral Home and Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel, with the Rev. Dennis Postell and the Rev. James R. Davis officiating. military honors will be by the U.S. Marine Corps. Visitation was held on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Robert G. Hart

Robert G. "Bob" Hart, 84, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly of Evansville, Ind., and Ann Arbor, Mich., passed away Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004.

Bob was born icon Nov. 4, 1919, in Evansville.

Mr. Hart served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Bob never met a stranger, and had a wonderful knack for conversation and putting people at ease. He was an avid fisherman and amateur meteorologist, of which he passed his knowledge and interests of each, to his family. In recent years, Bob and Ruth Flaherty had been steady companions. They found much happiness together, and both will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his children, Paul (Barbara) Hart of Torrance, Calif., and Kimberly (Michael) of Cary, N.C.; two grandchildren, Karla and Andrew Barritt of Cary; and many good friends.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at the Pelican Harbor Clubhouse in Punta Gorda, with the Rev. Ralph Young officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 496088, Port Charlotte, FL 33949-6088.

H. Charli Massaro

H. Charli Massaro, 75, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, Fla.

She was born icon May 18, 1929, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She moved to Punta Gorda in 1989 from Sarasota, Fla. She was a retired administration accountant for IBM. She was a member of Metropolitan Community Church of Venice. She was the founder and active member of the Charlotte HIV/AIDS People Support (CHAPS) Inc. The Charli's Angels Annual Golf Tournament for the benefit of CHAPS was named in her honor and has been held for the last seven years.

She is survived by her companion, Jeanne Ann Frost of Punta Gorda.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date.
