Carlton C. Lucas

Capt. Carlton Charles Lucas USN (Ret.), 97, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at The Villages, Port Charlotte, Fla.

Mr. Lucas was born icon Aug. 12, 1907.

He was commissioned an ensign upon graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy with the class of 1931 where he was captain of the swim team and a varsity tennis player. He was designated a naval aviator in 1934, and his 30-year naval career was filled with numerous aviation, surface and bureau command tours and assignments. He was in Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Oklahoma at the beginning of World War II and ended his wartime duties as commanding officer of the USS Gardiners Bay (AVP-39), which saw action in the western Pacific and was anchored in Tokyo harbor at the peace treaty signing. His wartime and post-war service earned him numerous awards and decorations for outstanding service to the Navy and his country.

Capt. Lucas ended his most distinguished career on July 1, 1961, and shortly thereafter moved to Port Charlotte, Fla., where he was active in travel, boating, golf, civic initiatives and his family.

Capt. Lucas was married in April 1933 to the former Celestine M. Monaghan of Cleveland Ohio, and they had five children, Kevin C. Lucas of Guatemala, Francis M. Hyberger of The Villages, Jane L. Geronime of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Mary C. Herbert and Joan C. Hutchens, both of Port Charlotte. His wife predeceased him in June 2001. They were married for more than 68 years and are survived by their five children, 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Port Charlotte.

Capt. Lucas will be buried with honors at the National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., at a time and date yet to be determined.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Building Fund, 21505 Augusta Ave., Port Charlotte, FL 33952.

Lester C. Dains

Lester Cecil Dains, 69, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004.

He was born icon April 6, 1935, in Cortland, N.Y., to Lauron and Louise Dains. Mr. Dains moved from Romulus, N.Y., to the Punta Gorda area in 1978.

He was an owner of a lawn maintenance business. He was always available to assist anyone when he was needed.

Mr. Dains is survived by his loving wife, Louise Dains of Punta Gorda; two daughters, Bettiann Jones of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Kelly Dains of West Lake Village, Calif.; a son, Steven Dains of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother, Harry Dains of Homer, N.Y.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two

sons, Kevin and Lauron Dains.

Burial will be private at Charlotte Memorial Gardens in Punta Gorda. A celebration of Mr. Dains' life will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 5200 Indian Springs Cemetery Road, Punta Gorda.

Loufilia Dallemand

Loufilia Dallemand, 82, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at Community Hospital in New Port Richey, Fla.

She was born icon Aug. 15, 1922, in Haiti.

Loufilia moved to Charlotte County 12 years ago from New Rochelle, N.Y. She retired from a pharmaceutical company. She was a member of Eben-Ezer Haitian Baptist Church of Port Charlotte, Fla. She was a loving mother and will be greatly missed by all.

She is survived by four daughters, Fernande Moussignac of New Rochelle and Nicole Orneas, Micheline Agustin and Yolene Dallemand, all of Port Charlotte; three sons, Alfhonse Dallemand and Ernest Dallemand, both of New York, and Berttlaud Dallemand of Port Charlotte; 29 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at the Port Charlotte Chapel of Roberson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at Eben-Ezer Haitian Baptist Church, 17195 Oakleaf Ave. in Port Charlotte. The Rev. Enoc Toby will officiate. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Clarence L. Gordon

Clarence Leopold Gordon, 81, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at his Port Charlotte residence.

He was born icon May 27, 1923, in Cuba.

Clarence retired as a security officer for Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. He moved to the Port Charlotte area in 1991 from Queens, N.Y. He was a member of the Mechanics Lodge, Loyal Providence No. 2, in Kingston, Jamaica.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mavis I. Gordon; one son, Andrew Gordon of West Orange, N.J.; four daughters, Marjorie Gordon of Queens, Donna and Carol Gordon, both of Brooklyn, and Charmaine Gordon of Tacoma, Wash.; two cousins, Desmond Gordon of Queens and Gladys Gordon of Brooklyn; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel. A graveside funeral service will be at 10 a.m., followed by entombment, Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte. The Rev. James R. Kuse of First United Methodist Church of Port Charlotte will officiate.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Nicholas G. Burke

Nicholas Gilbert Burke, 77, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at his residence.

He was born icon Feb. 15, 1927, in East Boston, Mass., to Mark and Winifred (Vaters) Burke (formerly of Newfoundland, Canada).

Mr. Burke grew up in the Boston area and attended Malden High School. He enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps on Jan. 12, 1945, and was stationed at Argentia Naval Air Station in Newfoundland. Mr. Burke spent most of his life in sales and retired from General Development Corporation after 16 years as one of their top land sales agents. He attended 13 conventions and was recognized for placing first in land sales for the company, 10 times in his career. He enjoyed traveling and visited South America, Mexico, Europe, Africa and his beloved Newfoundland.

Mr. Burke is survived by his wife, Irene (Pelley) Burke; sons, Mark Burke of Ocala, Fla., Wayne Burke of Gulf Cove, Fla., and Richard Burke of Englewood; his daughter, Karen (Burke) Mathews of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; grandchildren, William, Stephen and Daniel Burke; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Nicholas Burke; and a sister, Marilyn Brown of Thomaston, Maine.

Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at Suncoast Baptist Church on Warrington Boulevard in Port Charlotte. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m., with the memorial service being held at 2:15 p.m., followed by a private interment service for close friends and family at Charlotte Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Punta Gorda, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to WSEB 91.3 FM, Christian Family Radio, 135 W. Dearborn St., Englewood, FL 34223.

Charlotte Memorial Gardens is in charge of arrangements.

Elaine J. Taylor

Elaine Joan Taylor, 80, of Rotonda West, Fla., died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at Englewood Community Hospital in Englewood, Fla.

She was born icon April 14, 1924, in Lancaster, Pa., to George and Martha (McCausland) Reifsnyder.

She had been a resident of Charlotte County for four years, moving from Forest Park, Ohio. Mrs. Taylor was a loving wife, mother and homemaker for her family.

She is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Taylor of Landover Hills, Md., and Robin Atkinson of Englewood; and one granddaughter, Amy Atkinson of Englewood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert B. Taylor, in 1999.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at Englewood Community Funeral Home, 3070 S. McCall Road, Englewood.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mrs. Taylor to the American Red Cross, c/o Charlotte County Disaster Relief Fund, 1300 Enterprise Drive, Port Charlotte, FL 33953.

Arrangements are by Englewood Community Funeral Home.

Daniel C. White

Daniel C. White, 84, of Arcadia, Fla., died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004 at his residence in Mt. Vernon, Ohio.

He was born icon March 26, 1920, in Mt. Vernon to Louis Clyde and Archie (McClelland) White.

Daniel graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1937. He was a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church and served as an acolyte. In 1939 he worked at Cooper Bessemer Co. in the blueprint department, for the U.S. Navy department. During World War II, he worked as a mechanical draftsman at Curtis Wright, in Columbus, Ohio. In 1949, he worked as an erection supervisor for the Lustron Corp., manufacturer of porcelain enamel homes. His crews built homes in Massachusetts, Michigan, Kansas and South Dakota. After the company closed in 1950, Mr. White returned to the Cooper Energy Service, retiring in 1989, after 39 years of service. He wintered eight years in Bradenton, Fla., and spent the past 14 years in Arcadia.

He is survived by his wife, Mary (Benson) White; two sons, Gregory W. White of Gainesville, Ga. and Geoffrey D. White of Reidsville, N.C.; grandsons, Ryan, Brian, Jason and Daniel; and a step-grandson, Eric; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his three brothers, James C., George B., and Robert B. White.

A celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Cremains will be buried at Moundsview Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Knox County; 302 East High St., Mt. Vernon, Ohio 43050.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Home, Newark, Ohio.

Sherry MCBryar Goulding

Sherry M. Goulding, 62, of St. Pete Beach, Fla., died Friday Aug. 20, 2004, at her residence.

She was born icon in Chattanooga, Tenn.

She graduated from the University of Alabama with an accounting degree, and received a masters of accounting from the University of South Florida. She began her career with Peat Marwick Mitchell and was a long-time Certified Public Accountant. She was also active in youth sports for many years in Florida.

She is survived by her husband, of 40 years, Michael Goulding, formerly of Port Charlotte, Fla.; three children, Reid Goulding of Atlanta, Ga., Jason R. Goulding of St. Pete Beach, and Amber S. Plourde of Lake Mary, Fla.; two sisters, Nita Warren and Kristi Tatum, both of Trenton, Ga.; and five grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at Anderson-McQueen Funeral Home in St. Petersburg, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America Inc., 2000 L Street N.W., Suite 710, Washington, DC 20036. Online address, www.lupus.org.

Gerald S. Race

Gerald S. "Gerry" Race, 83, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly of Novi, Mich., passed away Aug. 21, 2004, in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Gerry was born icon Dec. 22, 1920, in Detroit, Mich.

He served his country during World World II in the U.S. Army. After the war he worked for Ford Motor Co., as a senior trim technician. He retired after 42 years of service, and moved to Punta Gorda, where he was an active member of the Elks Lodge. He was also an active member of Faith Lutheran Church of Punta Gorda.

Gerry is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gertrude; four children, Janet (Glen) Powell of Port Charlotte, Virginia (Robert) Scates of Apopka, Fla., Gerald (Linda) Race of Sears, Mich., and Ronald (Judy) Race of Wixom, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at Lynch and Sons Funeral Home, 340 Pontiac Trail, Walled Lake, Mich.,

Memorial donations may be made to Faith Lutheran Church of Punta Gorda, 4005 Palm Drive, Punta Gorda, Fl., 33950

Thelma M. Tweedie

Thelma M. Tweedie, 89, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away, August 18, 2004, at Hospice House in Sarasota. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Venice, Fla.

Kenneth Young

Kenneth Young, 70, Port Charlotte, Fla., died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte.

He was born icon Dec. 5, 1933, in Elizabeth, N.J.

Mr. Young was a veteran of the U. S. Army. He was a construction worker for more than 20 years with the Meisnick and Steiger Construction Company in Edison, N.J. Later he was employed by American Cyanamid Company in Linden for 10 years. Mr. Young moved from Iselin, N. J. to the Port Charlotte area 18 years ago. He worked as a lot person for seven years at a Lincoln-Mercury dealer in Punta Gorda, Fla. He also worked for six years at First Financial Leasing Company in Port Charlotte, before retiring this past year. He attended the First Presbyterian Church in Port Charlotte, Fla. and was a member of the Sportsmens Club and bowling league in Linden, N.J.

He is survived by his wife, Grace (Boisvert) Young; two sons, Kenneth (Diane) Young of Yardville, N.J., and Richard (Susan)Young of Ashburn, Va.; five sisters, Marion Reese, Florence and Jessie Touloumis, Alice Sawicki and Carol Factor; three grandchildren, Brett, Rachel and Emily Young.

Arrangements are by Werson Funeral Home, Linden, N.J.

Richard E. Todd

Richard E. "Rick" Todd, 45, of Rotonda West, Fla., passed away Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at Edward White Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Mr. Todd was born icon Sept. 17, 1958, in Tampa, Fla., to Hansel and Lamona (Hickman) Todd.

Rick moved from Tampa to Englewood in 1963. He attended Placida Road Church of God in Placida, Fla., and the Men's Prayer Group of Suncoast Worship Center. Rick was the first president of the Englewood Soccer League and enjoyed many hours coaching Little League Soccer, and basketball in the Englewood area. He was employed at Charlotte County Utilities since 1977 and retired as a wastewater plant operator in 2002.

He is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Susan (McClaskey) of Rotonda West; his mother, Lamona Todd, his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Hickman and his sister, Carrie Greus, all of Englewood; his stepson, Jason McClaskey of Salem, N.Y.; a daughter, Desiree Braithwaite of Rotonda West; 11 nieces and nephews, Torie, Erin, Brandi, Sierra, and Emilee of Texas, Ashley and Stephanie of Punta Gorda, Fla., Charleen, David, Wesley, and Bradley of Englewood, Fla.; great nephew, Christopher and great niece Riley; his mother in-law and father-in-law, Roger and Janice McClaskey.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, 8 p.m. at Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Terry Walker and the Rev. Glenn R. Barrs officiating. Interment will follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Richard Todd may be made to the American Cancer Society, N.C.I.C., P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368-2454.

Lemon Bay Funeral Home and Cremation Service has been selected to handle the arrangements.

George B. Smith

George B. Smith, 83 of North Port, Fla., passed away Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004.

He was born icon Sept. 30, 1920, in Rochester, N.Y.

Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from Eastman Kodak Company. He was the Past Commander at Doud Post of the American Legion in Rochester. Mr. Smith moved to the North Port area in 1982, from Wolcott, N.Y. He was a member of the Harbor Ilse Home Owners Asso., and San Pedro Catholic Church in North Port.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Lois; his stepdaughters, Nancy (Dennis) Pogoda of Atlanta, Ga. Mary-Jo (Paul) Sawyko of Rochester; his daughter-in-law, Lorna Foster of Rochester; his sons, William Smith and Gary Smith, both of Rochester; his sister, Claire Marcoux of Rochester; his brothers, Joseph (Ann) Smith of Rochester; Charles (Irma) Smith of Mobile, Ala.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at San Pedro Catholic Church.

Carl Leroy Ifft Sr.

Carl Leroy Ifft Sr., 65, of Arcadia, Fla., died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at his son's home in West Sunbury, Pa.

He was born icon Sept. 14, 1938, in Parker Township, and was the son of Ralph Leroy and Della Matilda Rihel Ifft.

Mr. Ifft was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked many years at Pullman Standard and Armco Butler Works before becoming a well established businessman in the excavating business, Pool King of Butler and Ifft's Trailer Park in West Sunbury. He was a Presbyterian. He was a member of Butler Moose Lodge 64, Elks Lodge 2608 of Lehigh Acres, Fla., and American Legion Post 0274 of Fort Myers Beach, Fla.

He is survived by his former wife, Patricia Sweeney of West Sunbury; a son, Carl Leroy Ifft Jr. of West Sunbury; two daughters, Kimberly Sutton of West Sunbury and Karen ( Kenneth) Caldwell of Fenelton; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; two brothers, Donald Sr. and James Ifft Sr., both of Butler; a sister, Eunice Zabicki of Butler; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and four nephews.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service was held at the home of Carl Ifft Jr., 130 Carl Lane, West Sunbury. In lieu of flowers, for donation information contact, Jay Bryan Funeral Home, 724-865-2550.
