Howard J. Smith

Howard Joseph Smith, 90, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Nursing Center in Port Charlotte.

He was born icon Dec. 25, 1913, in Corona, N.Y. He moved to Port Charlotte in 1972 from Bayside, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a retired clerk for the U.S. Postal Service and was a volunteer at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital. He was a member and usher of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. He also was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 5399 of Port Charlotte, Port Charlotte Chapter of National Association of Retired Federal Employees and American Legion Post 110 in Port Charlotte.

He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Jeannette A. Smith of Port Charlotte; a daughter, Denise Briggs of Jupiter, Fla.; a son, Mark Pifcitelli of Jacksonville, Fla.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel, with a Catholic wake service at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte. Interment and military honors by the American Legion Post 110 will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Rachel H. Triana

Rachel H. Triana, 66, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Deep Creek Rehabilitation in Port Charlotte.

She was born icon May 21, 1937, in New York, N.Y., and moved to Port Charlotte 10 years ago from Somerset, Mass. She worked as an agent for Prudential Insurance Co. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte.

Rachel is survived by three sons, Michael Triana of Oklahoma City, Okla., Paul Triana of Port Richey, Fla., and Christopher Triana of San Ranchos Margarita, Calif.; one daughter, Donna Triana of North Port, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 2500 Easy St., Port Charlotte. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte.

Donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 22107 Elmira Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33952.

Arrangements are by Paul Schelm Funeral Home, 3044 Caring Way, Port Charlotte.

Myrtle C. Ritch

Myrtle Cleo Ritch, 69, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.

She was born icon June 6, 1934, in Arcadia, where she was a lifelong resident. She was a member of Brownville Baptist Church in DeSoto County, Fla. She was a homemaker and mother.

She is survived by sons, Jesse (Sandra) Ritch, Eugene Jr., and Lee Ritch, all of Arcadia; daughter, Teri (Dean) Gallant of Arcadia; brothers, Pat Whidden of Chiefland, Fla., and Jimmy Whidden of Arcadia; sisters, Dorothy Carlton and Francis Williamson, both of Arcadia and Peggy Long of Punta Gorda, Fla.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the funeral services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia.

Robarts Funeral Home, Arcadia Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Bertha C. Heaton

Bertha C. Heaton, 84, of Englewood, Fla., died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004. Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel.

Barbara M. Murray

Barbara M. Murray, 69, of Englewood, Fla., died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, in Venice, Fla. Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel.

Ethel V. Steiner

Ethel Virginia "Ginny" Steiner, 83, of North Port, Fla., passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004.

She was born icon March 17, 1920, in Canton, Ohio. She moved to Harbor Cove in North Port more than 40 years ago from Miami, Fla. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of North Port. She enjoyed traveling and helping other people.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews. Ginny was preceded in death by her husband, George Dewey Steiner.

A memorial service will be at noon Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church of North Port.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 5600 Biscayne Drive, North Port, FL 34287.

Mary Farrugia

Mary Farrugia, 101, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Saturday, Jan.17, 2004 in Port Charlotte.

Mary was born icon June 9, 1902 in Egeria, W.Va., to Elizabeth and Andrew Richmond. She was married in Detroit, Mich., in 1928, and was a homemaker. She moved to Port Charlotte in 1957 from Melvindale, Mich. Mary attended St. Charles-Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte, and was a member of the Orchid Society, the Garden Club, and volunteered at the Charlotte County Cultural Center of Port Charlotte with the Handy Helpers.

She is survived by her daughter, Grace (Jack) of Port Charlotte; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews located in many states, including Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph in 1977, and six sisters and one brother.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at the Port Charlotte chapel of Kays-Ponger Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at St. Charles-Borromeo Catholic Church. Entombment will be at Restlawn Memorial Park, in Port Charlotte.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Port Charlotte Chapel of Kays-Ponger Funeral Home.

Andrew J. Gladd

Andrew J. Gladd 81, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, in Punta Gorda.

Andrew was born icon Dec. 12, 1922, in Detroit, Mich. He founded various manufacturing companies and contributed several innovations to the meat processing and paint finishing industry, of which he holds numerous patents. He was a loving and devoted family man. He was very generous to all who crossed his path.

Andrew is survived by his loving wife Maxine; his sons, Thomas, Andrew, Gary, Michael, Robert, Charles; his daughters, Barbara Bashore, Frances Smirnoff, Catherine Blanchard:30 grandchildren, and 37 great-grandchildren; his sister, Rose Murdza; and nieces Judy and Pam.

A memorial mass will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Punta Gorda.

In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Andrew J. Gladd may be made to Robert Packard Center ALS Research, Johns Hopkins University, 600 N. Wolfe St., Meyer 6-109, Baltimore, MD 21287.

Charles T. Graves

Charles T. "Charlie" Graves Sr., of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Punta Gorda.

Doris F. King

Doris F. King, 79, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, in Punta Gorda.

Doris was born icon July 20, 1924, in Alexandria, Va. She moved from Fort Smith, Va., to Punta Gorda in 1978. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her son, Gary E. (Kaye) Frye of Portsmouth, Va.; two daughters, Linda R. (Fred) Hindman of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Doray A. (Johnny) Barthlein of Leesburg, Ga.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond Frye, and second husband, James L. King.

Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, followed by services at 6 p.m., at Kays Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Punta Gorda chapel, with Dennis Postell officiating.

Interment will be at National Memorial Park, Falls Church, Va.

Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home Punta Gorda Chapel.

William D. Minogue

William D. Minogue, 73, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004 at Bon Secours-St. Joseph's Hospital in Port Charlotte.

William was born icon Sept. 5, 1930 in Waterbury, Conn. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He worked at Lombard Trucking Co. of Waterbury, and retired as a truck driver. He moved to Port Charlotte in 1994 from Wolcott, Conn., and was a member of the Peace River Repeater Association.

William is survived by two daughters, Elida Semanoff of Waterbury, and Kathleen Donaldson of Port Charlotte; six sons, Patrick Minogue of Torrington, Conn. Thomas Minogue of Wolcott, William Minogue of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Michael, Daniel and Timothy Minogue, all of Port Charlotte; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by

his wife, Josephine M. Minogue who died in 1996.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Roberson Funeral Home Port Charlotte chapel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church, in Port Charlotte.

Inurnment and military honors by the U.S. Army, will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, in Port Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church, 1441 Spear Street, Port Charlotte, FL 33948.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home Port Charlotte Chapel.

Maria E. Tomiko

Maria "Eleanor" Tomiko, 85, of Meriden, Conn., and formerly of Englewood, Fla., died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004.

Eleanor was born icon Dec. 10, 1918, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to John and Maria (Mattson) Holmberg. She and her husband Matthew Tomiko resided in Selkirk, N.Y., for most of their married life. She was a homemaker and a volunteer at the 4-H and cooperative extension program. Eleanor entered college at the age of 50, and graduated with honors from the State University of New York, in Albany, N.Y. She taught at Bethlehem Central Middle School. She also taught adult education. She was a founding member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Delmar, N.Y. Eleanor and her husband moved from Selkirk to Englewood. She worked for H & R Block and Company. She moved to Meriden in 2003, following the death of her husband.

Eleanor is survived by her sons, Lewis (Carol) Tomiko of Brentwood Tenn., James (Jane) Tomiko of King George, Va.; daughters, Sally Tomiko (David Taraskevich M.D.) of Middletown, Conn., and Marie Tomiko of Bethel, Conn.; seven grandchildren and four great-granddaughters.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at Meyers Funeral Home, Delaware Avenue, Delmar.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday. Feb. 28, 2004, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 85, Elm Avenue, Delmar.

Inurnment will be at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Capital District Chapter, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, NY 12206, or 96 Oak St. Hartford, CT 06106.

Sandra M. Wilson

Sandra Marie Wilson, 57, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte.

She was born icon June 25, 1946, in Chicago, Ill., and was the oldest daughter of Mae and Robert Richter of Cicero, Ill. She was raised in Cicero, and graduated from St. Frances of Rome School in Cicero, Nazareth Academy in LaGrange, Ill., and business school. She worked as a secretary for American Steel Foundries at Prudential Plaza in Chicago.

Sandra married David G. Wilson III in 1969, and became active in the Officers Wives Club of Fort Benning, Ga. She moved from Cicero to Port Charlotte 32 years ago. She was a member of the Junior Women's Club of Charlotte County, where she gained many dear friends. She also worked as a secretary in the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Department of the Charlotte County School Board for many years. She exercised twice a week and recently participated in the Christian aerobics classes at Peace Lutheran Church. Her holiday tradition was an annual Christmas party with her friends. She enjoyed her home, and enjoyed gardening in her naturally landscaped yard. She was a dedicated "cheerleader's mom" at Charlotte High School and enjoyed summer vacations with her family at the beach on Captiva Island, Fla. She enjoyed football and had a special chair for watching it. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, daughter-in-law, sister and sister-in-law. Since 1972, she was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, in Port Charlotte, where she attended weekly.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, David G. Wilson III of Port Charlotte; daughter, Lisa Marie Wilson of Charlotte, N.C.; mother, Mae Richter of Cicero; sisters, Denise Sewczwicz of Batavia, Ill., and Cynthia Clery of Oak Brook, Ill.; brother, Robert Richter of Orlando, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a traditional wake service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Paul Schelm Funeral Home, 3044 Caring Way, Port Charlotte.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 2500 Easy St., Port Charlotte.

Donations may be made to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church,

21505 Augusta Ave., Port Charlotte, FL 33952; or the American Heart

Association, P.O. Box 21475, St. Petersburg, FL 33742.

Luis M. Berrios

Luis Manuel Berrios, 93, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, in Punta Gorda.

Mr. Berrios was born icon June 21, 1910, in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, and resided in Punta Gorda for 17 years. He retired as an accounting administrator, in Puerto Rico.

He is survived by his son, Dr. Luis D. (Margarita) Berrios of Punta Gorda; two brothers, William Berrios of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Carlos Berrios of Orlando, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Margit Bannon of Columbus, Ohio, and Gretchen M. Berrios of Miami, Fla. He was preceded in death by his wife, Herminia Villaverde Berrios in 2001.

A funeral Mass was held, Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Punta Gorda. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Punta Gorda.

Geoffrey L. Griffith

Geoffrey Lamont Griffith, 56, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly of Arlington, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda.

Geoffrey was born icon June 18, 1947, in Washington, D.C., and attended Virginia Tech, where he received an associate degree in chemical engineering. He had been a seasonal resident in Punta Gorda since 1988 from Arlington, and became a full-time resident of Punta Gorda in 2002.

He is survived by his mother, Carolyn R. Griffith of Arlington; two aunts, Dorothy F. Tucker of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Mary E. Ziemer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one uncle, Harry G. Rollins of E. Alton, Ill.; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, retired Col. Clyde L. Griffith, U.S. Army.

A committal ceremony followed by inurnment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington at a later date in May of 2004.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home and Crematory, Punta Gorda Chapel.

Frank Luciano

Frank Luciano, 89, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte.

Frank was born icon Feb. 14, 1914, in New Haven, Conn. He moved to Port Charlotte in 1986.

He is survived by his wife, Madeline; daughters, Marie (William) Goh of New Jersey, and Louise (John) Rogalski of New Haven; and son, Anthony (Julie) Luciano of New Haven.

A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at San Antonio Catholic Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
