Louise W. Dahlin

Louise W. Dahlin, 93, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003.

She was born icon Sept. 29, 1910, in Duluth, Minn., to Louis and Anna (Wescher) Kloepfel. Mrs. Dahlin moved here in 1974 from Duluth, Minn. She was a member of Wintergarden Presbyterian Church in Murdock, Fla.

Survivors include her two nieces, Karen Hawkinson and Kaye Eckstrom, both of Minnesota; two grandnieces, Angela and Heather; and loving close friend and caretaker, Catherine Sheil of Port Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Dahlin; and brother, George Kloepfel.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until funeral services at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at the chapel of Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 5200 Indian Springs Cemetery Road, Punta Gorda, Fla., with the Rev. Myles W. MacDonald of Wintergarden Presbyterian officiating. Entombment will follow at Charlotte Memorial Gardens in Punta Gorda.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Wintergarden Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 380564, Murdock, FL 33938.

Arrangements are by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home and Cemetery, Punta Gorda.

Robert W. R. Steel

Robert Wesley Rockland Steel, 78, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, in Punta Gorda.

Mr. Steel was born icon Jan. 24, 1925, in Erie, Pa. He was a retired lieutenant colonel with the U.S. Army and received a Bronze Medal, Purple Heart and a Medal of Honor. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Punta Gorda.

He is survived by his loving wife, Elinor Elizabeth Steel of Punta Gorda; four daughters, Elinor Wood of North Fort Myers, Fla., Elizabeth Suckling of Murdock, Fla., and Sharon Nelson and Nelle White of Punta Gorda; two sons, Robert Steel of Massachusetts and Rockland Steel of Orlando, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at the Punta Gorda chapel of Kays-Ponger Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 459 Gill St., Punta Gorda, FL 33950.

Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Punta Gorda chapel.

Raymond H. Carr Sr.

Raymond H. Carr Sr., 74, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Monday, Dec. 1, 2003.

He was born icon Nov. 12, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pa., and moved to this area in 1984 from Pennsylvania. Mr. Carr retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve with 40 years and nine months' service. He worked for Bell Telephone Co., AT&T and Lucent Technology for 34 years in Pennsylvania. He was a member of American Legion Post 110 in Port Charlotte, Fla., Free Mason Lodge 717 of Pennsylvania F&AM, Telephone Pioneers Club and Fellowship Church in Englewood.

Survivors include his wife, Rita; daughter, Diane Donadini of Georgia; sons, Alan Carr and Ronald Carr, both of Pennsylvania, and Raymond Carr Jr. of Texas; grandchildren, Ryan, Lauren, Casey and Cobli; and stepchildren, Michael Nissley, Catherine Blackwell and Susan Kadish, all of Pennsylvania.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Colebrook Lutheran Anglican Church Cemetery in Colebrook, Pa.

Memorial donations may be made to Shrines Hospital for Children, 12502 North Pine Drive, Tampa, FL 33612.

Howard W. Propst

Howard Wallace Propst, 82, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda, Fla.

He was born icon Sept. 15, 1921, in Brush Fork, W.Va. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a carpenter in construction. He came to Arcadia 10 years ago. He was of Church of God faith.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Propst of Arcadia; a daughter, Jackie Jones of Live Oak, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Deborah Blackmon of Fort Myers, Fla., and Brenda Armstrong of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; brothers, Earl Propst of Mineral Springs, N.C., and Carl Propst of Cary, N.C.; sisters, Cecil Crim of Bridgeport, W.Va., Eugenia Stewart of Clarksburg, W.Va., and Bonnie Barker of Sissonville, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at the Arcadia chapel of Robarts Funeral Home, 163 N. Brevard Ave., Arcadia, with the Rev. Jimmie Collins of Arcadia Church of God officiating. Visitation was on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia.

Robarts Funeral Home, Arcadia chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas H. Rogers

Thomas Harvey Rogers, 71, of Arcadia, Fla., died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003.

He was born icon Nov. 21, 1932, in Arcadia. He was a lifelong resident of DeSoto County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Tom was a life insurance and investment broker, cattle rancher and citrus grower. He was an avid mullet fisherman. He loved gardening, wood crafting and cooking. His specialty was barbecue ribs and swamp cabbage. He also loved football and was an avid Gators fan. Tom and his wife, Joy Irene, had been married for nearly 50 years. He was a member of Arcadia Elks Lodge 1524. He also was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Arcadia.

He is survived by his wife, Joy Irene Rogers of Arcadia; three daughters, Dianne (Bob) Carlton and Catherine (Larry) Furr, both of Arcadia, and Gail (Bob) Harrison of Lakeland, Fla.; two sons, Chris (Karla) Rogers of Arcadia and Jeff (Shelly) Rogers of Mooresville, N.C.; one brother, Clarence Pascal "C.P." (Mary Pat) Rogers of Fort Myers, Fla.; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Margaret Catherine Rogers and Claude Pascal Rogers; brother, John Walter Rogers; and granddaughter, Hallie Christine Rogers.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, 50 N. Hillsboro Ave., Arcadia. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at the funeral home, with Dr. Odell Miley officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia.

Memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, Memorial Program/Call Center, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

Robert Hughes Horn, 83, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003. Arrangements are by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home and Cemetery, Punta Gorda.

Carmen Yaeger

Carmen Yaeger, 78, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at Charlotte Harbor Health Care. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.

Mary Bloom

Mary "Terri" Bloom, 70, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Monday, Dec. 29, 2003.

Terri was born icon Aug. 12, 1933, in Waumandee, Wis. She moved from Lindstrom, Minn., to Port Charlotte in 1996. She was a member of Charlotte Symphony League and Forever Young Dance Group. She was also a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir. Terri was also the co-director of Cul-Cen Productions for more than 11 years, and a member of North Port Chorale.

Terri is survived by her husband of more than 27 years, Richard Bloom of Port Charlotte; her sister, Rita Waters Culhane of Rushford, Md.; her brother, John (Kay) Waters of Bloomington, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Loretta Waters; brothers, James and Harold Waters.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 1144 Veronica St., Port Charlotte, FL 33952.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2565 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte. Burial will take place in Center City, Minn.

The family has entrusted care and services to Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, Punta Gorda, Fla.

Dorothy C. Edes

Dorothy C. Edes, 87, of Sarasota, Fla., died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003.

Dorothy was born icon Feb. 20, 1916, in Castine, Maine. She resided in Ellsworth, Maine, and graduated from Brewer High School in Ellsworth. She also was head of the lunch program at the school. Dorothy moved from Ellsworth to Sarasota in 1970. She was a member of Lemon Bay Women's Club in Englewood, Fla., a volunteer with the Charlotte/Glades Library System, and a member of First Baptist Church of Englewood.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda E. Griffin of Kennesaw, Ga.; a son, John C. Edes of East Greenwich, R.I.; a sister, Margaret C. Lunt of Lucerne, Maine; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorial donations may be made in Dorothy's name to Senior Friends, 700 Medical Blvd., Englewood, FL 34223.

Arrangements are by Wiegand Brothers Funeral Home, Sarasota.

Richard L. Thompson

Richard L. Thompson, 71, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003.

Richard was born icon Sept. 29, 1932, in Yonkers, N.Y. He was the son of Roland and Ella Mae (Purdy) Thompson. He came to this area in 1996 from Lake Hiawatha, N.J., where he was a contractor and the founder of Thompson Glass & Mirror. Mr. Thompson was a member of the Parippanas rescue and recovery unit, and was of the Presbyterian faith.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 48 years, Patricia; daughters, Cindy Milesky of Center Lisle, N.Y., Janet (Daniel) Cash of Jackson, N.J., and Sandra (Gordon) Fushikoshi of Honolulu, Hawaii; son, Donald R. (Joan) Thompson of Dingmans Ferry, Pa.; and eight grandchildren.

Vincent J. Thornberry

Vincent Joseph Thornberry, 22, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003.

He was born icon Feb. 1, 1981, in Port Charlotte and attended schools in the area, graduating from Port Charlotte High School in 1999.

Besides his parents, Thomas P. and Linda Thornberry, "Joey" leaves two brothers, Edward Thomas of Port Charlotte and T.J. Thornberry of Jacksonsville, Fla.; a sister, Ann M. Schmidt of California; grandmothers, Elizabeth Moffatt and Kathleen P. (Pat) Thornberry; an aunt and uncle, Barbara and Mark Collins, aunt, Diane Moffatt, and two cousins, Corey and Lindsey Collins, all of Port Charlotte. Joey also leaves many aunts, uncles and cousins in Waterford, Clarkston and Orion, Mich., Fairbanks, Alaska, and Mississippi.

Visitation will be held 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at the Port Charlotte chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church, 1441 Spear St., Port Charlotte. Burial arrangements will be private.

Jackie H. McCauley

Jackie Herod McCauley, 52, of Englewood, Fla., died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at Englewood Community Hospital in Englewood.

He was born icon Aug. 30, 1951, in Key West, Fla., to Charles and Inez (Russell) McCauley. Jackie served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam era. He had been a lifelong resident of the Florida west coast. He worked for Cemex Concrete in Venice, Fla., for 15 years as a driver. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Kathy McCauley of Englewood; his mother, Inez McCauley of Venice; two daughters, Amber and Melissa McCauley, both of Englewood; two sons, Sean and Jack McCauley, both of Englewood; three sisters, Millie Gorson of Ridley Park, Pa., Peggy Dexter and Katherine McCauley, both of Venice; two brothers, Harry McCauley Cumbee and James McCauley, both of Venice; three grandsons, Johnny and Colby McCauley and Jacob Goff; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until service time at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Englewood Community Funeral Home, 3070 S. McCall Road, Englewood, with the Rev. Adair Ellen, pastor of Murdock Baptist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are by Englewood Community Funeral Home.

Wallace J. Zacker

Wallace "Vats, George" Joseph Zacker, 87, of Westville Grove, N.J., died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, David and Kathryn Zacker, in Millersville, Md.

He was born icon on Sept. 28, 1916, in Kulpmont, Pa., a son of the late Felix and Anna (Reppi) Zacker. As a teenager, he hitchhiked to the 1933 Chicago World's Fair and to Florida. He rode bicycles extensively, including a trip to Mt. Vernon, Va. He and his brother operated a coal breaker near Shamokin, Pa., and hauled coal to Baltimore and New Jersey.

He was a Sergeant Tech 4 radio technician in the Army during World War II, serving in the 2nd Armored Division, 14th Armored Field Artillery, HQ Battery. He served in combat from 1942 to 1945 in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. After WWII, he designed and built his own house.

He was employed as an electronics technician for RCA of Camden, N.J., and for 30 years at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. He was able to diagnose and repair virtually anything mechanical or electrical. He enjoyed working on his cars, restoring antique radios, history and travel. He made several coast-to-coast trips across the United States and Canada. He was very fond of his cat, Sadie. He attended Blessed Hope Community Church of Westville Grove for many years, and was a student of the Bible.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David and Kathryn Zacker of Millersville; his daughter and son-in-law Judith and Bruce Howell of Punta Gorda, Fla.; two step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Louis, Walter, Anthony, Frank, Stanley, Edward and Joseph Zacker, and by a sister, Mary Kraft. His wife of 60 years, the former Esther V. Huntzinger of Hegins, Pa., died in 2002.

Visitation will be held 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at St. John's United Methodist Church in Hegins. Funeral services will follow at the church with the Rev. William Danis officiating. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery, Hegins.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Hospice of the Chesapeake, Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.

Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, Pa., is in charge of arrangements.

Wilton J. Miller

Wilton J. (Bill) Miller, 91, of Powhatan, Va., widower of Francis C. Miller, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, after a brief illness.

He was a World War II veteran and was retired from NASA in Langley Field, Va. Mr. Miller was active in his community. At NASA, he was part of the Apollo mission team and supervisor of the Landing Loads Division. In Newport News, Va., he was active in the Boy Scouts and Little League baseball. He was a good father to his family and was a father figure to many other area youth as well.

After retirement, Mr. Miller lived in Williamsburg, Va., and Keysville, Va., then in Arcadia, Fla., for 22 years. Mr. Miller was an avid golfer in his senior years in Arcadia and later in Powhatan. He hit a hole-in-one last year in Farmville, Va., Mr. Miller had many close friends, including his golfing partner, George Crouch and his wife Betty of Powhatan, and Harry and Betty Miller of Arcadia.

Survivors include his daughter, Linda (John) Wallace of Powhatan; sons, Bill Miller of Glen Allen, Va., and Ben Miller of Richmond, Va.; stepdaughter, Judy Billett of Newport News; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at noon Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News, with a graveside funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. in Peninsula Memorial Park.

Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News, is in charge of arrangements.
