Fleeta B. Jones

Fleeta Bell Jones, 83, of Arcadia, Fla., died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.

She was born icon Aug. 24, 1920, in Macon, Ga., to Ross and Ethel Harvey. She attended public school in Macon. She married Mr. U. T. Jones in 1939. They had nine children. She moved to Arcadia in 1949 and enjoyed fishing, working in her yard, quilting and cooking. She united with Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, and later with Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, U. T. Jones; three sons, Lethoniel (Johnnie Mae) of Orlando, Fla., Glenwood of Arcadia and Roy (Ethel) of Tampa, Fla.; five daughters, Georgianna, Willie Mae and Annie (Michael) Ragins, all of Detroit, Mich., Mary (the Rev. C.L. Greene) of North Port, Fla., and Elvira (Craig) Sims of Tampa; a granddaughter, Elouise; one sister, Ada Ross; two brothers, Horace and Walter C. Harvey, all of Macon; 28 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Shirley; her parents; three brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at Hickson Funeral Home in Arcadia. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church in Arcadia, with the Rev. C. L. Greene officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hickson Funeral Home, Arcadia.

Mary F. McGill

Mary Francis McGill, 42, of Arcadia, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003. Life came to an end at Beneva Lakes Health-Care and Rehabilitation Center in Sarasota, Fla.

She was born icon March 7, 1961, in Billion, S.C. She was a resident of Arcadia for several years.

She leaves to cherish her memory, three children, Richard Blanding Jr., Beatrice Clemons and Omar McGill; one sister, Faye Robinson; four brothers, Charles McGill, Travis McGill, Willie McGill and Curtis Simons; a friend, Ellis Middleton and family; a special friend, Paddy Robinson; a niece, DeFrance Simons; and additional relatives and friends.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at Hickson Funeral Home in Arcadia. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia, with the Rev. Fred Woodard officiating.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hickson Funeral Home, Arcadia.

Elwood C. Lewis

Elwood C. Lewis, 85, of Englewood, Fla., died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003. Arrangements are by ICS Cremation Society Inc., Harbour Heights, Fla.

John R. Haegele

John R. Haegele, 92, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Friday, Nov. 7, 2003.

He was born icon Oct. 4, 1911, in Barnhill, Ill., the son of George and Katie Haegele. John was a teacher for 40 years, and coached the football team at Dwight High School in Plymouth, Ill. He coached grade school basketball teams for many years, and officiated basketball games throughout the local area. John was a building contractor and owned Haegele Construction Co. in the mid 1950s. He retired in 1980 and moved to Cherokee Village, Ariz., then moved to the Deep Creek area of Port Charlotte in 2003.

John will be greatly missed by his sons, John R. "Rick" (Linda) Haegele Jr. of Placida, Fla., and Ronald F. (Lila) Haegele of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; his brothers, Fred Haegele of Champaigne-Urbana, Ill., and Floyd Haegele of Fairfield, Ill.; and granddaughters, Dianna (Scott) Pickup of Woodstock, Calif., and Kayte Haegele of El Dorado Hills. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nedra Haegele; his brothers, Vern and Frank Haegele; and a grandson, Rhett Haegele.

Bettie Jo Hughes

Bettie Jo Hughes, 68, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte.

She was born icon March 25, 1935, in Graham, Ky. Bettie Jo moved to Port Charlotte 32 years ago from Granite City, Ill. She was a retired cashier at Winn-Dixie supermarket in Promenades Mall, Port Charlotte.

She is survived by two daughters, Jennifer J. (Jere) Hoeltzle and Margaret Sturtevant, both of Punta Gorda, Fla.; a son, Cecil E. (Jenny) Hughes Jr. of Brandon, Fla.; a sister, Patricia Oliver of Ojai, Calif.; a brother, W. J. Oliver of Granite City, Ill.; three grandchildren, Corbin Hughes, Conner Hughes and Jennifer (Michael) Odom; and one great-granddaughter, Alysia Odom.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, in the Punta Gorda chapel of Roberson Funeral Home, 215 Mary St., Punta Gorda.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, 1101 N. Lake Destine Road, Suite 425, Maitland, FL 32751.

David L. Jackson

David L. Jackson, 81, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.

David was born icon April 3, 1922, in Coatbridge, Scotland. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He worked in Dearborn, Mich., at Ford Motor Co. for 40 years, and was a member of the Dearborn Masonic Lodge. He retired to Punta Gorda in 1984.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 25 years, Dolores L. Jackson; five sons, Robert B. Jackson of Georgia, David S. Jackson of Michigan, Richard L. Nix of Florida, Gary K. Nix of Michigan, and Steve W. Nix of California; one daughter, Suzanne Sheffield of Michigan; one brother, Robert J. Jackson of Michigan; one sister, Catherine W. Dey of Florida; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in the Punta Gorda chapel of Roberson Funeral Home, 215 Mary St., Punta Gorda. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Port Charlotte, with the Rev. J. Ralph Burton Jr. officiating.

Helen Richardson

Helen Richardson, 91, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Monday, Nov. 10, 2003.

She was born icon Sept. 23, 1912, in Fairmount, Ill., the daughter of Bill and Mildred (Hardesty) Lane. She retired from Chrysler Corp. after 22 years of service, and came to Punta Gorda in 1987 from Long Beach, Calif. She will be remembered as a woman who loved to take care of her family.

Helen will be greatly missed by her sons, Jack D. Lane of Punta Gorda and Robert Richardson of Grants Pass, Ore.; granddaughters, Cindy Lougee of Wildomar, Calif., and Heidi Hughes of Upland, Calif.; grandson, Jack L. Lane of Richardson, Texas; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Richardson.

Geraldine M. Howerton

Geraldine M. Howerton, 71, of Englewood, Fla., died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at Englewood Community Hospital in Englewood.

She was born icon Sept. 1, 1932, in Detroit, Mich., and came to this area 24 years ago from St. Clair Shores, Mich. Mrs. Howerton was a homemaker and was of the Catholic faith.

Mrs. Howerton will be deeply missed by her husband, Lawrence Thaxton Howerton of Englewood; one son, Jeffrey S. Howerton of Port Charlotte, Fla.; two daughters, Debra Lugiewicz and Linda Howerton, both of Port Charlotte; one sister, Barbara Billadeaux of Detroit, Mich.; four grandchildren, Shannon Williams, Jamie Lapinsky, Taylor Lugiewicz, all of Port Charlotte, and Ronald Lapinsky Jr. of Tampa, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren in Germany.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with funeral services at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at Paul Schelm Funeral Home, 3044 Caring Way, Port Charlotte.

Homer C. Hecht

Homer C. Hecht, 87, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at Life Care Center of Punta Gorda, Fla.

Homer was born icon Aug. 7, 1916, in McCool Junction, Neb. He was the son of Edwin and Florence (Washburn) Hecht. Mr. Hecht served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked as a warehouse superintendent with CECO of Omaha, Neb., retiring in 1978. He moved from Omaha to Arcadia in 1981. He was a longtime member of Punta Gorda Alliance Church.

Homer will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 32 years, Charlotte; sons, Kenneth (Judy) Hecht of Arcadia, Fla., William (Carmen) Hecht of Gainesville, Fla., and Roger (Kim) Hecht of Lewiston, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; four stepdaughters; 13 step-grandchildren; 19 step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine Washa Hecht; second wife, Irene Storm Hecht; son, Gary Hecht; brothers, Lawrence, Russell and Harold Hecht; and sister, Louise Hecht.

Maye Hazel

Maye Hazel, 86, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at DeSoto Health and Rehabilitation in Arcadia.

She was born icon June 27, 1917, in Spring Hill, Ala. She had been a resident of Arcadia for 29 years. She was a homemaker and mother.

She is survived by two sons, Ronald (Lee) Hazel of Bronson, Fla., and Todd Hazel of Arcadia; a daughter, Denise (David) Vannoy of Rotonda West, Fla.; a sister, Etta Cornell of Orlando, Fla.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Augustus Hazel; and a daughter, Glenda Crews of Naples, Fla.

Funeral services were held at graveside Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Naples Memorial Gardens in Naples, with the Rev. Terry Hudson officiating.

Robarts Funeral Home, Arcadia Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline E. Collins

Pauline Elizabeth Collins, 83, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003. Englewood Community Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Englewood, Fla., has been selected to handle arrangements.

John H. Lake

John H. Lake, 89, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Homes, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Howard L. Bollinger

Howard L. Bollinger, 73, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003.

He was born icon Oct. 23, 1930, in Youngstown, Ohio. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force and was trained as an air traffic controller. He also served in the Aleutian Islands. Howard worked for several pharmaceutical companies in the Cleveland, Ohio, area, and took interest in the psychiatric part of the business. He earned his degrees from Antioch College and Indiana University, and became a mental health counselor, working with Naval families as chief of counseling services in Great Lakes, Ill., and Jacksonville, Fla. He also served as a field instructor for Loyola University Graduate School of Social Work. Howard was an avid sailor.

Howard will be greatly missed by his wife, Joan; daughters, Laura Bollinger of Laurel, Md., and Lee (Dan) Glover of Bay Village, Ohio; and grandsons, Maxwell and Henry Glover of Bay Village.

E. Gary Holmes, 68, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003.

He was born icon July 22, 1935, in Warsaw, N.Y., the son of Harold and Eleanor (Bowles) Holmes. Gary served in the U.S. Army. He was a psychologist in Otter Lake, N.Y., and retired to Port Charlotte in 1995. He was a member of the Elks lodge, American Legion and Port Charlotte Tennis Club.

Gary will be greatly missed by his close friend, Donna Budzinski of Utica, N.Y.; daughters, Cheryl (John) Holmes-Wright of Pattersonville, N.Y., Eleanor (Sean) O'Meara of Wales, Great Britain, and Jennifer (Mike) Holmes-Blair of Utica; sons, Scott (Katrina) Holmes of Middlebury, Conn., and Gregory Holmes of Ashland, Ky.; brothers, David (Judy) Holmes of North Fort Myers, Fla., Thomas (Kerry) Holmes of Geneseo, N.Y., Harold Holmes Jr. of Florida and Bob (Marylou) Holmes of Victor, N.Y.; and 11 grandchildren.

William McCort

William McCort, 81, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born icon July 24, 1922, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Bill served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He moved to Punta Gorda from Bridgeton, N.J., in 1959, and continued his 50-year career in automotive sales at Palm Chevrolet, Arcadia Motors, Bill Branch Chevrolet and Marlow Werner. He was an avid car racing fan and driver, racing stock cars in New Jersey and Charlotte County. As a private pilot, he flew for pleasure and for the CAP Sundown Patrol. He was president of the Punta Gorda Kiwanis Club, and ran for county commissioner. Bill was a lifelong member of the GOP and American Legion Post 476 in Wilkesville, Ohio.

He will be missed by his wife of 30 years, Patty; his children, Sara (Matt) Tate of Traveler's Rest, S.C., Cheryl (Steve) Powell of Fort Myers, Fla., Steve (Robin) Hoffman of Cocoa, Fla., Jim Hoffman of San Angelo, Texas, and Dottie Lynn Bender of North Cape May, N.J.; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Florence French.

Viewing will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with funeral services at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at Kays-Ponger Funeral Home in Punta Gorda.

William R. Moore

William R. Moore, 78, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003.

He was born icon Feb. 23, 1925, in Fredonia, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was co-founder of Proto Plastics in Vandalia, Ohio. Mr. Moore was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Piqua, Ohio. He also was a member of the Southwest Florida Soaring Society.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Peterson) Moore; sons, Daniel (Jane) Moore of Casstown, Ohio, and Randel (Julie) Moore of Troy, Ohio; daughter, Laurie (Bill) Plemons of Montverde, Fla.; brother, Richard (Thekla) Moore of Mentor, Ohio; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bessie (Foster) Moore; daughter-in-law, Sandra K. Moore; and sister, Barbara Nelson.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Fisher-Cheney Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Troy.

Alvera M. Wedemeyer

Alvera M. Wedemeyer, 89, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003.

Mrs. Wedemeyer was born icon March 8, 1914, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was a former member of the Rosie Reds, the Cincinnati Club and many charitable organizations in Cincinnati. She was a charter member of the Isles Yacht Club, an active member of the Isle-ettes and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mrs. Wedemeyer enjoyed boating, bridge and golfing.

She is survived by her son, Robert J. (Karen) Wedemeyer of Punta Gorda; a grandson, Scott (Dana) Wedemeyer of Cincinnati; and two great-grandchildren, Andrew Jon Wedemeyer and Rose Isabella Wedemeyer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Wedemeyer, in 1990; and her brother, Edward Schloemer, in 1967.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, in the Punta Gorda chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
