Polly A. West

Polly Ann West, 75, of North Port, Fla., died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003.

She was born icon Feb. 14, 1928, in Ned, Ky., and came to Venice, Fla., 14 years ago from Indianapolis, Ind.

Survivors include her daughters, Frances Covalt of Sarasota, Fla., Wyenema West of Dayton, Ohio, Diana Werner of Englewood, Fla., and Shirley Ketchen of North Port; sons, Jerry West and George West of Indianapolis; stepdaughter, Linda Mosier of Catoosa, Okla.; a brother, Jerry Noble of Aurora, Ind.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services and Burial will take place in Indianapolis.

The family requests that donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Venice Chapel, is in charge of local arrangements.

Minnie B. Godfrey

Minnie Bryan Godfrey, 92, of Zolfo Springs, Fla., passed away Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, in Sebring, Fla.

She was born icon Oct. 7, 1911, in Zolfo Springs, and was a lifelong resident there. She was a homemaker and a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Klein (Les) Thompson of Arcadia, Fla.; her brother, Dale (Helen) Bryan; grandchildren, Les V. Thompson, Dawn Livingston, Theo Thompson and Susan Thompson; seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, John H. Klein and Joe L. Godfrey.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 10, at New Hope Baptist Church, with Burial in New Hope Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Curry Raley Funeral Home, Wauchula, Fla.

Marjorie I. Massey

Marjorie Ivy Massey, 93, of Lake Placid, Fla., and formerly of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Friday, Nov. 7, 2003.

She was born icon Nov. 10, 1909, in Key West, Fla., to William and Marie Perpall. Her family moved to Arcadia, where she was raised. She was active with several Lake Placid community and social organizations such as the Lake Placid Garden Club. Marjorie will be remembered as a great cook, seamstress, and for her love of knitting and crocheting, gardening and raising orchids.

She is survived by her son, Carl (Nellie) Poston; sisters, Louise Birchmire and Priscilla Thompson; and grandchildren, Glenn and Carla Poston.

Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, Nov. 15, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Orlando, Fla., with the Rev. Charlie Fritch officiating. Please sign and view the family guest book at www.baldwinfairchildfuneral.com.

H. Donald Ross

H. Donald Ross, 91, of Arcadia, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003.

He was born icon May 21, 1912, in Changewater, N.J., the son of Harry and Maybelle Chandler Ross. He moved to Arcadia from Changewater in 1986, and retired as a custodian after working 13 years for the board of education of Lebanon, N.J., at the Woodglen School. He worked for C.B. Ley, owner of Home Supply Co. lumber company in Washington, N.J. He was a building contractor for 32 years and was a well-known artist, having exhibited in Clinton Historical Museum and Hunterdon Art Center of Clinton, N.J. He was a past president of the Kittatinny Art Group of Washington, N.J., and a member of the Peace River Art Guild of Arcadia. Mr. Ross also was a member of Changewater United Methodist Church, and attended Pine Level United Methodist Church in Arcadia.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Rosalie (Beeles) Ross.

Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at Joshua Creek Cemetery, Arcadia.

Arrangements are by Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia.

Homer Hecht

Homer Hecht, 87, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003. Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services, Punta Gorda.

Edmund N. Hamilton

Edmund N. Hamilton, 82, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003.

He was born icon March 15, 1921, in Guyana, the son of Edwin and Julia (Waring) Hamilton. Edmund came to this area in 1991 from Jersey City, N.J., where he had been an accountant.

Edmund will be greatly missed by his daughter, Jacklene (Ralph) Griffith of Brockton, Mass.; sisters, Olive Bleir of Hillside, N.J., and Elaine Hamilton of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and nephew, Leland Bleir of Plainfield, N.J.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services, Punta Gorda. The service in celebration of Edmund's life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Abundant Life Assembly of God in Punta Gorda. Lee Smith

Lee Smith, 73, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003.

She was born icon Nov. 14, 1929, in Springfield, Ill., the daughter of Ralph V. and Faye E. (Murray) Smith. She served in the U.S. Army, retiring with the rank of major. She was also the EC officer, department chief of Staff Logistics at 5th Army headquarters, Fort Sheridan, Ill. After leaving the Army, she was a dispatcher for the Illinois State Police for many years. Lee moved from Peoria, Ill., to Punta Gorda in 1996. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 886 in Pontiac, Ill., Women's Army Corps Veterans Association and Women in military Service for America.

Lee will be greatly missed by her brothers, William M. Smith of Edwards, Ill., and Pete (Janie) Smith of Bartenville, Ill.; sisters, Helen R. Gardner, Georgia Allison, both of Peoria, and Sharon (Dwayne) Batterton of Stanford, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

Keith H. Stanfield

Keith H. Stanfield, 71, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003.

He was born icon Feb. 25, 1932, in Lipton, Tenn., the son of Charles and Martha (Holmes) Stanfield. He served his country in the U.S. Navy, and retired as master chief petty officer. Keith came to this area in 1969 from Orlando, Fla., and retired from Emery Air Conditioning.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 19 years, Nancy; daughters, Therese Ann Otte of Punta Gorda, Kerri McQuiston and Sherri Brooke, both of Nebraska; stepdaughter, Tamie Andrews of Punta Gorda; stepsons, Bill Horner and Tony Horner, both of Punta Gorda; brother, Bill Stanfield of Orlando; sisters, Barbara, Joann and Ruth, all of Georgia; and 15 grandchildren.

A memorial service in celebration of Keith's life will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services, Punta Gorda. To express condolences to the family, please visit www.LTaylorfuneral.com and sign the guest book.

Christopher N. Trowbridge

Christopher Nicolaus Trowbridge, 15, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died suddenly Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla.

He was born icon Sept. 4, 1988, in Valparaiso, Ind. Chris attended Charlotte High School, where he was a member of the Silver King Band. Chris' outgoing personality will be truly missed by his many friends and family.

Surviving are his loving parents, John M. (Christina) Trowbridge of Punta Gorda and Jodi (Wes) Runyan of Gary, Ind.; one brother, Brandon Shrader of Merrillville, Ind.; two sisters, Jacklynne Trowbridge of Punta Gorda and Jessica Runyan of Gary; paternal grandfather, John C. Trowbridge of Valparaiso; maternal grandmother, Gloria Cooper of Las Vegas, Nev.; many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Alice K. Trowbridge; and an aunt, Judith L. Trowbridge Brandt.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until funeral services at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Abundant Life Assembly of God, 1500 Cooper St., Punta Gorda. Additional services and interment will be in Indiana.

Memorials in Chris' name may be made to his family to help defray funeral expenses. Envelopes will be available at the church.

Robert W. Olsen

Robert "Bob" W. Olsen, 89, of Rotonda West, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Englewood Community Hospital in Englewood, Fla.

He was born icon June 20, 1914, in Dorchester, Mass., and came to this area in 1980 from Plymouth, Mich. Bob was a mechanical engineer and was active in the development of sonar during World War II. He worked for Armor Research Foundation in Chicago, Ill., and Standard Oil of Chicago and Whiting, Ind. After further studies in chemical engineering, he retired from Olson Laboratories in Livonia, Mich. He was a chief of laboratory support staff for an emission laboratory of the Environmental Protection Agency in Ann Arbor, Mich. Bob will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Roberta W. Hand of La Porta, Ind.; two sons, Richard of Grand Ledge, Mich., and Russell of Rotonda West; 10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred ("Winnie").

A memorial service to celebrate Bob's life will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in the Englewood chapel of Lemon Bay Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dave Baldridge of Englewood United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be private.

Jerry L. Ford

Jerry Lee Ford, 75, of Lake Placid, Fla., and formerly of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at his home under the loving care of Life Path Hospice.

Jerry was born icon Aug. 5, 1928, in Arcadia, and attended schools in LaBelle, Fla., and Miami, Fla. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a heavy equipment operator and a farmer.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Margaret of Lake Placid; son, J.T. of Okeechobee, Fla.; sister, Dorothy Longmire of Lake Placid; brothers, Lawrence Ford Jr. of Sebring, Fla., and Ray of Labelle; grandsons, Allen and Thomas; granddaughters, Melissa, Jeannie, Cassie and Stepanie; great-granddaughter, Jadah; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at The Ministry Center on State Road 29, Lake Placid.

Memorials may be given to The Ministry Center or Life Path Hospice.

Arrangements are by Bass Funeral Home, Okeechobee.

William B. Sapp

William B. Sapp, 80, of Pinellas Park, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003.

He was born icon Dec. 1, 1922, in Nocatee, Fla., and moved to Pinellas Park in 1975 from Wilmington, N.C. Sapp was in the Coast Guard, serving during World War II. Then he entered the U.S. Army and served as an engineer in the Korean Conflict and the Vietname War. He retired from the military as a Chief Warrant Officer 3. After retirement, he began working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Christina Sapp of Pinellas Park; a daughter, Barbara Lancaster of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a son, William Robert "Bob" Sapp of Orlando, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Arcadia, Fla., with military honors rendered by DeSoto County Honor Guard.

Arrangements are by Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia.

Lawrence J. Gunther

Lawrence J. Gunther, 86, of North Port, Fla., passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Englewood Community Hospital in Englewood, Fla. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte, Fla.

Arthur Jean

Arthur Jean, 72, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Port Charlotte.

Jeanette A. Zazzara

Jeanette A. Zazzara, 79, of North Port, Fla., died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, in Bon Secours-Venice Hospital in Venice, Fla. Arrangements are by James A. McKee Funeral Home, North Port.

Thomas E. Kois

Thomas E. Kois, 72, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, in Port Charlotte.

He was born icon Oct. 2, 1931, in Buffalo, N.Y. He retired to Port Charlotte in 1996. Mr. Kois served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He had been a computer engineer for Cincinnati Bell in Orlando, Fla., for 11 years, retiring in 1994. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey I. Kois; a daughter, Laura Depew of Apopka, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Diane (Gary) Woodward of Port Charlotte; two stepsons, Clifford Kois of Lancaster, N.Y., and Larry (Donna) Kois of Orchard Park, N.Y.; two sisters, Joyce (John) Bollinger of Lady Lake, Fla., and Janice (Robert) Spradley of Orlando; a brother, Bruce (Ronna) Kois of Buffalo; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in the chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home in Port Charlotte. Graveside services with military honors will follow at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Margaret W. Pasanio

Margaret W. Pasanio, 83, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Friday, Oct. 17, 2003.

She was born icon June 2, 1920, in Waterbury, Conn., and moved to this area in 1976 from Boston, Mass. Mrs. Pasanio worked 20 years at Jordan Marsh in Boston and was a nurse at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte for 20 years. Mrs. Pasanio enjoyed working with people and left a little of herself with everyone she knew. All of her grandchildren called her nanny, and all her family and friends will miss her.

Surviving are her daughter, Margaret A. Turman of Port Charlotte; four sisters, Florence Flack, Dottie Robinson, Jackie (Eddie) Yurewicz and Louise (Johnny) Walsh, all of Massachusetts; one brother, Jessie (Peggy) James of Massachusetts; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia N. Gattuso; her husband, Peter Baptista Pasanio; three brothers, Harry, Buster and Jeffrey James; one sister, Ethel Hutchings; and two grandsons, Billy and David Turman.

A memorial service to celebrate Mrs. Pasanio's life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Port Charlotte chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, 2405 Harbor Blvd., Port Charlotte.

Freeda N. McNulty

Freeda N. McNulty, 86, of Englewood, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003.

She was born icon April 2, 1917, in Indianapolis, Ind., to Joseph and Ida (Day) Chester. She came to this area in 1969 from Indianapolis.

She is survived by her husband, John. She was preceded in death by her five sisters and a brother, all from Indiana.

Visitation will be from noon until the funeral service at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, in the Englewood chapel of Lemon Bay Funeral Home, with the Rev. James M. Sharp of Good Shepherd Church in Englewood officiating. Inurnment will be at Gulf Pines Memorial Park in Englewood.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood chapel, is in charge of cremation arrangements.
