Clarence Benson

Clarence "Don" Benson, 69, of North Port, Fla., and formerly of Bradenton, Fla., died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003.

He was born icon Jan. 29, 1934, in Bradenton. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from Manatee High School and then from the University of Florida. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1989. He volunteered distributing monthly commodities in Okeechobee, Fla., with the Share program in North Port. He was a blood donor, having donated 9 gallons. He called "bingo" at San Pedro Catholic Church, and worked part time at Publix. He was loved by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Sadie of North Port; two daughters, Candi Bullock of Atlanta, Ga., and Dottie Lamb of Bradenton; two sons, Wesley Beasley of Bradenton and Bill Beasley of Sun City, Fla.; two sisters, Margaret Rosier of Naples, Fla., and Maxine Weatherly of Atlanta; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Farley Funeral Home, North Port chapel.

Farley Funeral Home, North Port chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.

Frances J. Edenfield

Frances J. Edenfield, 65, formerly of Arcadia, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, in Gainesville, Fla.

Mrs. Edenfield was born icon Sept. 11, 1938, in Soperton, Ga., and moved to Fort Pierce in 1979, coming from Apopka, Fla. She was a bank teller.

Survivors include her sons, Mike Edenfield of Fort Pierce and Tim Edenfield of Macon, Ga.; sisters, Kay Melton of Glendale, Ariz., and Linda Bowers of Fort Pierce; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a service at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, in the chapel of Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home in Fort Pierce, with the Rev. Craig Bridgers officiating. Burial will take place at Durden Cemetery in Adrian, Ga.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 Saint Jude Research Hospital, Memphis, TN 38105.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home, Fort Pierce.

Charles G. Mansfield

Charles Gordon Mansfield, 60, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at DeSoto Memorial Hospital in Arcadia.

He was born icon April 23, 1943, in Arcadia and was a lifetime resident there. He was a laborer in agriculture.

He is survived by his mother, Betty Chambers of Dunnellon, Fla.; brother, Henry Mansfield of Arcadia; and a sister, Deanna McEachin of Dunnellon.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at Robarts Funeral Home, Arcadia chapel, 163 N. Brevard Ave., Arcadia. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Joshua Creek Cemetery in Arcadia.

Robarts Funeral Home, Arcadia chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Eileen L. Brown

Eileen L. Brown, 63, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at home. Arrangements are by ICS Cremation Society Inc. of Harbour Heights, Fla.

Raymond Francis Konopasek, 82, of Englewood, Fla., died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003. Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Helen M. Leonard

Helen M. Leonard, 74, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Charlotte Harbor Healthcare in Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by James A. McKee Funeral Home, North Port, Fla.

Ellison E. Murphy

Ellison E. Murphy, 87, of Englewood, Fla., died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003. Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood chapel, is in charge of cremation arrangements.

Carmelo G. Muia

Carmelo G. Muia, 90, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at HQM of Port Charlotte.

He was born icon May 11, 1913, in Calabria, Italy, and came to the Port Charlotte area 27 years ago from New York, N.Y. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. Mr. Muia worked as a laborer in the construction industry. He was a member of American Legion Post 110 and St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, both in Port Charlotte.

Mr. Muia is survived by his wife, Rose Muia of Port Charlotte; two sons, Anthony Muia of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Joseph Muia of Fort Myers, Fla.; one brother, Frank Muia of Jersey City, N.J.; one sister, Nella Riggio of Italy; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a wake service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Paul Schelm Funeral Home, 3044 Caring Way, Port Charlotte. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 21505 Augusta Ave., Port Charlotte. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte.

Arrangements are by Paul Schelm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.

SaMarra J. Jenkins

SaMarra Jade Jenkins of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at DeSoto Memorial Hospital in Arcadia.

She was born icon Oct. 31, 2003, in Arcadia.

She is survived by her mother, Lisandra Cannon of Arcadia; her father, Manuel Lee Jenkins III of Arcadia; her grandparents, Jody Cannon, Mirinda Hernandez, Manuel Lee Jenkins II and Linda Reed, all of Arcadia; and brothers, Jackson Tyler Jones and Manuel Lee Jenkins IV, both of Arcadia.

Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 3, at Robarts Funeral Home, Arcadia chapel, 163 N. Brevard Ave., Arcadia, with the Rev. Joseph Cannon of United Pentecostal Church officiating. Burial was at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia.

Ann Norris

Ann Norris, 70, of Arcadia, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003.

Ann was born icon April 2, 1933, and raised in Arcadia. She completed nursing school at Florida State University. She worked at the old Arcadia General Hospital and worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Arcadia. Mrs. Norris started as a rural mail carrier and was promoted to postal clerk, retiring in 1988. Ann and her husband, Pete, celebrated 51 years of marriage Oct. 26. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Arcadia, which she loved.

She is survived by her husband, James T. "Pete" Norris of Arcadia; daughter, Gail (Tim) Rieckhoff of Fort Myers, Fla.; son, James P. "Jimmy" (Brenda) Norris of Arcadia; three grandchildren, Kaylee and Jenna Lee Norris of Arcadia, and Jaime Rieckhoff of Fort Myers.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, 50 N. Hillsboro Ave. Arcadi. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at First Baptist Church of Arcadia, with the Revs. Jimmy Wingate and Phillip Young officiating. Burial will be at Joshua Creek Cemetery, Arcadia.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238; or Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, 12902 Magnolia Drive, Tampa, FL 33612-9497.

Dolores R. McCaughey

Dolores Rae McCaughey, 74, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Port Charlotte.

Mary F. Burk

Mary F. (Matthews) Burk, 77, of Punta Gorda, Fla., formerly of Red Lion, Pa., died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md.

She was born icon Aug. 15, 1926 in York, Pa.

Mrs. Burk is survived by her husband of 58 years, Dale E. Burk; two sons, Dwight E. Burk of York, Pa., and Joel M. Burk of Peachtree City, Ga.; and one daughter, Carol A. Winand of Port Charlotte, Fla.

Memorial contributions may be made to New Harmony Presbyterian Church, 2295 Delta Road, Brogue, PA 17309.

Arrangements are by Olewiler and Heffner Funeral Home, Pennsylvania.

Verna F. Buys

Verna F. Buys, 93, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at HQM of Port Charlotte.

Verna was born icon Sept. 16, 1910, in New Jersey. She retired as a bookkeeper, and moved with her husband, John, to this area in 1979 from Princeton, N.J. She was a member of Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Port Charlotte.

She is survived by her niece, Claire V. Loftus of Cooper City, Fla., and nephew, Richard K. Buys of Tallahassee, Fla., as well as several other nieces and nephews.

Verna was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John D. Buys, in 1985.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., with funeral services at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte chapel. Burial will follow at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens in Punta Gorda. The Rev. Matthew L. Neumann of Pilgrim United Church of Christ will officiate.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 24515 Rampart Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33980.

Anna C. Nigro

Anna C. Nigro, 88, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2003.

Anna was born icon April 12, 1915, in New York City, N. Y., to James J. and Josephine MacHauer Gallagher. Mrs. Nigro moved to this area in 1987 from Massapequa, Long Island, N.Y.

She is survived by her sister, Jeannette Kennelly of Niceville, Fla.; two nieces, Kathy (Steve) Carlino of Niceville Fla., and Jeannette (Tom) Blackwell of Ringwood, N.J.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens.

Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Homes, Punta Gorda chapel.

Linwood L. Sasser Sr.

Linwood L. Sasser Sr., 67, of Arcadia Fla., passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, in Arcadia.

Linwood was born icon April 15, 1936, in Freemont, N.C. He was a graduate of the University of Omaha. He also served nine years in the U.S. Air Force, and was commissioned in the U.S. Army, where he served for 12 years until 1976, when he moved to Arcadia.

Mr. Sasser was personnel director at DeSoto Correctional Institute until his retirement in 1996. In Arcadia, he was a member of Ancon Lodge F&AM, Scottish Rite in Panama, Arcadia Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge 1327, American Legion Post K11 and the military Officers Association of America.

Linwood is survived by his wife, Evelyn Mahon Sasser of Arcadia; son, Linwood Jr.(Karla); two granddaughters, Rebecca Carris, and Jessica Sasser; and a great-granddaughter, Trinity.

Private services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Scottish Rite Masonic Charities, P.O. Box 519, Lexington, MA 02420.

Donald I. DiBello

Donald I. DiBello, 78, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Bon Secours-Venice Hospital in Venice, Fla.

Mr. DiBello was born icon July 27, 1925, in Middletown, N.Y., to Onofrio and Charlotte (Lowerre) DiBello. He was a graduate of Middletown High School. After serving three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he also attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. In 1949 he graduated from the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg, Texas. He was employed by General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y., before joining the Boy Scouts of America as a district Scout executive in 1953. He served in this capacity in Scout councils in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Rutherford, N.J., and Utica, N.Y., before transferring to the Albany, N.Y., council as assistant Scout executive in 1962. He left the Boy Scouts of America in 1970. He worked for Farm Family Insurance Co. in Glenmont, N.Y., until he retired and settled in Englewood. Donald held life memberships in the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, both in New York. He was the founder of the USS Deuel Association, and belonged to the National Association of Amateur Radio Operators. He was a 32nd-degree Mason, Scottish Rite Lodge Council Chapter Consistory, Valley of Albany, and belonged to Englewood Masonic Lodge 360 F&AM.

Surviving are his daughter, Donna DiBello of Goffstown, N.H.; sons, Paul, of Granby, Colo., Peter of Averill Park, N.Y., and Mark of Brigham City, Utah; brother, Edward of Middletown; sister, Caroline Everts of Snohomish, Wash.; five grandchildren, Tricia Lee, April Catlin, Jason DiBello, David DiBello and Heidi Pelham; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth DiBello.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Church of Christ Englewood East, with the Rev. Jim Ratliff officiating; and an additional service at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at West Stephentown Baptist Church in Stephentown, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Donald DiBello's name may be made to Boy Scouts of America, Daniel Webster Council, 571 Holt Ave., Manchester, NH 03109.

Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Englewood.

Virginia A. Bohnet

Virginia A. Bohnet, 79, of Rotonda, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003.

She was born icon March 22, 1924, in Terre Haute, Ind., the daughter of Fred and Myra (Robbin) Goodrich. Virginia was a nurse and caregiver for many years, and moved to Rotonda in 1976 from Terre Haute.

She will be greatly missed by her husband, John J. Bohnet; daughters, Donna (David) Early of Indiana, Johanna (Gary) Werst of Florida, Veronica Bohnet of North Carolina, Christine (Jim) Smith of Florida and Bridget Bohnet of Virginia; sons, Fred (Mary) Randolph of Illinois, John James (Rose) Bohnet of California, and Don Steven Bohnet of Maryland; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Virginia was preceded in death by her first husband, John R. Randolph.

The family's service in celebration of Virginia's life will be private at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services, Punta Gorda, Fla. To express condolences to the family, please visit www.LTaylorfuneral.com and sign the guest book.

Richard H. Kissinger Sr.

Richard H. Kissinger Sr., 70, of Rotonda West, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at his residence.

He was born icon Dec. 13, 1932, in Scranton, Pa., to Alvin and Genevieve (Travis) Kissinger. He served in the U.S. Army and was a graduate of the University of Scranton, obtaining his bachelor's degree (cum laude) in 1954. He moved to Rotonda West in August 1993 from Elberon, N.J., after retiring as director of personnel with Prudential Insurance Co. in Holmdel, N.J. Mr. Kissinger was a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and was a member of SCORE in Englewood.

He is survived by his son, Richard (Lynne) Kissinger Jr. of Leonardo, N.J.; two grandsons, Joseph and Jack Kissinger, both of Leonardo; sisters, Ann Kramer of Pompton Plains, N.J., Jeanne Monson of Lincoln Park, N.J., and Sara Jane of Wayne, N.J.; and his beloved cat, Oscar.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Englewood Community Funeral Home and Cremation Services has been selected to handle arrangements.

Walter H. Anstey

Walter Henry Anstey, 90, of Venice, Fla., died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003.

He was born icon Sept. 24, 1913, in Lancastershire, England, and came to Venice in 1987 from Massachusetts. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theater from 1941 to 1945 during World War II. He received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, and was discharged as a captain. He was a president of Harold M. Pitman Corp. in Secaucus, N.J., suppliers of equipment and material to the graphic arts industry.

Survivors include his wife, Doris; sons, Peter of Wilmington, Del., and Sanford of Prides Crossing, Mass.; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A celebration of life will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, in the Hibiscus Room of Plantation Golf and Country Club. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, with full honors.

National Cremation Society, Venice chapter, is in charge of arrangements.
