Sanford K. Swart

Sanford Kendall Swart, 88, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003.

He was born icon June 18, 1915, in Chauncey, Ohio, and moved to this area in 1973 from Willoughby, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a boiler operator in the automotive division of TRW in Ohio. He was of the Protestant faith.

Survivors include sons, Henry H. Swart of Chaplin, Conn., and Gary L. Swart of Englewood; daughter, Karen S. Burnham of Englewood; grandson, Richard Swart of Windham, Conn.; granddaughters, Elizabeth Swart, Jennifer Swart, both of Venice, Fla., and Amanda K. Burnham of Manhattan, N.Y.; great-granddaughter, Corrine L. Swart of Windham; and nephew, Rollie Swart of Athens, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 1989.

There will be a private ceremony with family.

Elizabeth C. Anderson

Elizabeth C. "Betty" Anderson, 86, of North Port, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at the home of her daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter.

She was born icon Oct. 6, 1917, in Altoona, Pa., and moved to this area in 1981 from Chicago, Ill. She was the president of Thelco Inc. for 20 years. She was a member of San Pedro Catholic Church, Harbor Isles Monday Afternoon Bridge Club and the Wednesday Ladies Bridge Club. She was an avid semi-pro bowler in past years.

She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Anderson of Tampa, Fla.; sons, John D. Anderson of Tucson, Ariz., and Craig M. Anderson of Steger, Ill.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, John L. "Jack" Anderson, on July 25, 1998.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at San Pedro Catholic Church, 14380 Tamiami Trail, North Port, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated immediately following the visitation. Inurnment will take place in Pennsylvania.

The family has entrusted care and services to Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 5200 Indian Springs Cemetery Road, Punta Gorda, Fla.

Alta G. Armstrong

Alta Grace Armstrong, 88, of Dowling Park, Fla., and formerly of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at a hospital in Live Oak, Fla.

She was born icon Nov. 30, 1914, on a farm in Goff, Kan., the daughter of O. J. Ward and Mary Catherine Allen Ward. Mrs. Armstrong graduated from Wetmore High School in Wetmore, Kan., and Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. She taught in a one-room grade school in the area of Woodlawn, Kan., after graduating from high school. She later taught in Seneca, Kan., Sabetha, Kan., and Topeka. During World War II, Alta taught grade school in Bakersfield, Calif. She married the Rev. Roy H. Armstrong on June 20, 1954, in Topeka. She and the Rev. Armstrong were instrumental in forming and building Crestview Methodist Church and Country Side Methodist Church, both in Topeka.

Survivors include her sister, Mary Joy Brodnax of Sacramento, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; and her two brothers, George and Archie Ward.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 5200 Indian Springs Cemetery Road, Punta Gorda, Fla., with private Burial to follow at Charlotte Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will also be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Bixler Memorial Chapel, Advent Christian Village.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Advent Christian Village, P.O. Box 4305, Dowling Park, FL 32064.

The family has entrusted care and services to Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, Punta Gorda.

Michael W. Bartolomucci

Michael Wayne Bartolomucci, 45, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003.

He was born icon Nov. 5, 1957, in Malden, Mass., the son of Orlando and Loretta (Del Genio) Bartolomucci. He was raised in Georgetown, Mass., and moved to Punta Gorda in 1984. Michael worked as a health care assistant, and volunteered for Hope Hospice and Charlotte HIV-AIDS Network (CHAN).

Michael leaves behind a brother, Joseph Hayes Bartolomucci of Bethel Park, Pa.; sister, Carol Jean Lanza of Plymouth, Mass.; nieces and nephews, Tamara Ann Boudreau of Voorhees, N.J., Jennifer Ann Mozloom of Hamilton Square, N.J., Justin Bartolomucci, Lee Anne Bartolomucci and Jacob Bartolomucci, all of Bethel Park. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation and sharing of memories will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 25, at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services, Punta Gorda. To express condolences to the family, visit www.LTaylorfuneral.com and sign the guest book.

Irma J. Chomicz

Irma J. Chomicz, 72, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Friday, Oct. 17, 2003.

She was born icon Dec. 2, 1930, in Norwalk, Conn., and moved to this area in 1971 from Fairfield, Conn. Mrs. Chomicz was a retired nurse's aide and was of the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include her companion, Francis (Newt) Tilton of Port Charlotte; daughters, Tracy Wisniewski of Escalan, Calif., and Signe Knapp of Port Charlotte; sister, Rosalie Massimino of Westport, Conn.; brother, Michael Johnson of Round Rock, Texas; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.

Maria C. Gonzalez

Maria C. Gonzalez, 84, of Port Charlotte, Fla., and formerly of Elizabeth, N.J., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003.

She was born icon March 3, 1919, in Brazil. She had resided here since 1976. Mrs. Gonzalez was a seamstress and was the owner of Maria's Alterations. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her children, Wilson (Marie) Gonzalez of Monroe Township, N.J., and Elizabeth (Ed) de Paiva of Port Charlotte; four granddaughters; one grandson; three great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband; a great-grandson; her brother and her sister.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in the Punta Gorda chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, 635 E. Marion Ave., Punta Gorda, Fla., with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.

Memorials in Mrs. Gonzalez's memory may be made for the research of neuroblastoma to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer c/o Department of Pediatrics, 1275 York Ave., New York, NY 10021.

Neal J. Kiley

Neal J. Kiley, 61, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born icon July 29, 1942, in Chicago, Ill., and moved to Punta Gorda one year ago from Lodi, Calif. He was a retired truck driver and a charter member of Moose Lodge 2393 in Tri Lakes, Calif.

He is survived by a son, Gordon J. Kiley of Oakland, Calif.; a sister, Nancy O. Reinecke of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; a half-sister, Charlotte A. Bennison of Glendale, Calif.; a brother, Frank H. Kiley of Port Charlotte; and two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte chapel.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home and Crematory, Port Charlotte chapel.

Rosalie H. Olsen

Rosalie Hannie "Boots" Olsen, 90, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, in New Orleans, La.

She was born icon July 22, 1913, in Baton Rouge, La. She was a graduate of Louisiana State University and attended Tulane University. She was a former social analyst with the Welfare Department for the state of Louisiana. She was a charter member of the Isles Yacht Club and American Association of University Women in Punta Gorda Isles. She was also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Punta Gorda Isles.

Survivors include a daughter, Beverly John Beck of Overland Park, Kan.; stepson, Larry Olsen of Estero, Fla.; three stepdaughters; two sisters, Marie Hannie Azar of Baton Rouge and Georgia Hannie Brocato Manson of New Orleans; two grandchildren, Alison Beck of Overland Park and Ariane Beck of Austin, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Henry S. Olsen; a son, George John; three sisters and six brothers.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Louisiana, with Monsignor Robert Berggreen officiating. Interment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Rabenhorst Funeral Home, Baton Rouge, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary T. Roiniotis

Mary T. Roiniotis, 77, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003.

She was born icon July 15, 1926, in Chicago, Ill., and moved here in 1985 from there. She was a member of the Eagles of Port Charlotte and Elks Lodge 2763 of Deep Creek, Fla. She attended Wintergarden Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir.

Mary is survived by her son, Edward (Susan) Roiniotis of Bloomingdale, Ill.; two granddaughters, Diana M. and Angela T. Roiniotis, both of Illinois; her daughter-in-law, Margaret Ziemer of Illinois; and her longtime dear friend, Felix Mironas of Port Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her husband, Angelo A.; and her son, Richard.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 5200 Indian Springs Cemetery Road, Punta Gorda, Fla., with the Rev. Miles MacDonald officiating. Inurnment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society in her memory.

The family has entrusted care and services to Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, Punta Gorda.

Emily M. Semple

Emily May Semple, 93, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at her residence.

She was born icon May 22, 1910, in Schenectady, N.Y. After special training following high school, she worked in New York City as a textile designer. She returned to Schenectady around the beginning of World War II and started work at General Electric. She retired from General Electric in 1972, having worked most of her career as a draftsman designing elements of large hydroelectric turbines and generators. A devoted daughter, she cared for her elderly parents for many years. She moved to Florida in 1982 and devoted her time to charity work at Charlotte Regional Medical Center, and to many activities at First Presbyterian Church of Punta Gorda. She enjoyed her charity work, her friends and spent many hours knitting until her eyesight became too dim. Until then, her family was the lucky recipient of many sweaters, mittens and socks with her special skills.

She is survived by three nieces and one nephew; and their eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Punta Gorda, 115 Harvey St., Punta Gorda, FL 33950.

Deborah Brownlee

Deborah Bralich Brownlee, 41, of North Port, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003.

She was born icon March 3, 1962, in Sharon, Pa. She graduated from Sharpsville High School in 1980. She worked as a makeup artist for Pompa's Salon in Pennsylvania. After moving to North Port, Debbie worked as a floral designer for Port Charlotte Florist for three years. She was a volunteer with Hospice and Meals on Wheels. Debbie was of the Catholic faith and was a member of San Pedro's Catholic Church in North Port. Debbie loved life, and shared that joy with those around her. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include her daughters, Jacquelyn and Alexa of North Port; mother, Mary Jane (Phil) De Pillo of North Port; father, Robert (Dora) Bralich of Sharpsville, Pa.; brother, Robert K. (Judy) Bralich of Sharpsville; sister, M. Monique Peters of Masury, Ohio; stepsister, Carrie Simmons of Brookfield, Pa.; and many special aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services. The Mass in celebration of Debbie's life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at San Pedro Catholic Church in North Port. Sylvia M. Howley

Sylvia Mary Howley, 80, of North Port, Fla., passed away Monday, Oct. 20, 2003.

She was born icon Sept. 29, 1923, in Cleck Heaton, England. She and her husband moved to this area 19 years ago from Gloucester County, N.J. She was an owner of Sylvia's Beauty Salon, both in England and New Jersey. In 1942 she was a member of the Women's Royal Air Force in England.

Survivors include her husband, Henry; daughter, Susan (Leo) Centonzo of Clementon, N.J.; son, David (Sandra) of Shamong, N.J.; sister, Christine (Bob) Roberts of North Port; grandchildren, Brian (Elena) Howley, Sarah Howley and Alex Peletier; great-grandchildren, Thomas Howley and Matthew Howley; nephew, Nigel Barker; and niece, Janice Pearson.

Family services will be private.

Paul J. Akins

Paul Joseph Akins, 43, formerly of Arcadia, Fla., died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, in Las Vegas, Nev.

He was born icon Oct. 15, 1960, in Deland, Fla., to the Rev. David Akins Jr. and Lula Akins. He was a DeSoto High School graduate in 1978. He retired after 20 years of service to the U.S. Air Force, and was employed for the past four years at Las Vegas Valley Water District. He was a member of Church of God in Christ of Las Vegas, Nev.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his parents, David Akins Jr. and Lula Akins; two brothers, Louis Rechard and David Anthony Akins, both of Arcadia; one sister, Mryna Youngblood of Arcadia; maternal grandmother, Ethel Jones of Sparta, Ga.; four nephews, Rodney Roberts of Tampa, Fla., Donte Hillard, Brandon Hillard and Derrick Hillard, all of Arcadia; three nieces, LaQuanda Rechard of St. Petersburg, Fla., Lakeesha Hillard and Moneisha Williams, both of Arcadia; two uncles, Govenor Akins of Plainfield, N.J., and Harry Akins Sr. of Arcadia; nine aunts, Annie Pearl Jones of Sparta, Margaret Cooper of Orlando, Fla., Addie Mae Brodie and Ellen Motley, both of Arcadia, Annie Clayton of Umatilla, Fla., Betty Betts, Willie Kay Betts and Marchelle Jones, all of Plainfield, and Mary Clark of Eustis, Fla.; a large host of cousins, brothers-in-law, other relatives, friends and church members.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Hickson Funeral Home in Arcadia. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at House of Refuge Church of God, 1222 S.W. Harlem Circle, Arcadia, with the Rev. Roy Freeman officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia, with military services by MacDill Air Force Base Honor Guard.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hickson Funeral Home, Arcadia.

Felix T. Canty Jr.

Felix Todd Canty Jr., 36, of Sacramento, Calif. and formerly of Port Charlotte, Fla., went to be with his Lord last month, on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003.

Felix was born icon Feb. 28, 1967, in Slaton, Texas, the son of Anita & Felix Canty Sr. He attended St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte.

He is survived by his mother, Anita H. Canty of Sacramento; two sisters, Kathy (Keith) Farnsworth of Carmichael, Calif., and Jo Lynn (Keith) Crawford of Springfield, Ore.; his devoted longtime friend, Gregory Poccia of Sacramento; four nieces and three nephews; many aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends who knew him as "Todd." He was preceded in death by his father.

Friends and family were invited to attend a memorial service, which was held September 2003 at Saint Roberts Church in Sacramento.

Memorials may be made in Todd's name to Sunburst Project for Pediatric Aids, 1025 19th St., 1A, Sacramento, CA 95814. Nightingale-Gilmore Funeral Chapel, Sacramento, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles F. Dahlke

Charles F. Dahlke, 80, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, at his home.

He was born icon Oct. 4, 1923, in Harbor Beach, Mich., the son of William and Emilie Dahlke. Charles and his family moved to Port Charlotte 27 years ago from Cleveland, Ohio. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Dahlke worked as a foreman in a steel mill.

He is survived by his son, George (Cara) Dahlke of Port Charlotte; three daughters, Beverly (John) Marton of Berea, Ohio, Diane (Gene) Baughman of Port Charlotte and Janice (Richard) Hall of Port Charlotte; brother, Clarence Dahlke of Cleveland; sisters, Mimi Dunn and Charlotte Pember, both of Lake Placid, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Elaine Dahlke, in 1995; and his wife, June Warner Dahlke, in 1996.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Peace Lutheran Church of Port Charlotte, 21500 Gibralter Drive, with the Rev. Skip Struebing officiating. Arrangements are by Paul Schelm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.

Dorothy Gregory

Dorothy Gregory, 70, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, after a long illness.

She was born icon Feb. 10, 1933, in Bridgeton, N.J., the daughter of Harold and Marian Shimp. She married Melvin Gregory on Nov. 28, 1953, and they were married for 50 years. Dorothy retired in 1990 after driving a school bus for the Woodstown Pilesgrove school system for 20 years, and moved to Burnt Store Isles in 1994 from Woodstown, N.J. She was a life member of Beta Sigma Phi in Woodstown and an active member of the Burnt Store Isles Hacketts Golfing Group.

Dorothy will be greatly missed by her husband, Melvin Gregory; son, Melvin Gregory Jr. of Woodstown; daughter, Barbara Seibert of Harrisonville, N.J.; sisters, Doris Downer of Elmer, N.J., and Shirley Helper of Alloway, N.J.; brother, Harold Shimp of Merritt Island, Fla.; and grandchildren, Robbi Gregory of Shillington, Pa., Jamie Gregory of Woodstown, Dana Gregory of Westmont, N.J., and Ashley Williams of Harrisonville.
