Mavis P. Pope

Mavis Pearl Pope, 67, of Punta Gorda, Fla., was met at the gates of heaven on Wednesday, July 30, 2003.

Mrs. Pope was born icon Jan. 17, 1936, in Colquitt County, Ga. She had lived in Punta Gorda since 1957, and worked at Publix in the bakery until her retirement in 1999. She was a Baptist and loved the Lord and read her Bible every day. She will be greatly missed by all her family and many friends. Everyone who knew her loved her.

She is survived by her children, Melvin (Cynthia) Pope and Donna Faye Pope; granddaughters, Jessica, Amber and Michelle Pope; great-granddaughters, Brittany and Abby Kirk; sister, Virginia (the Rev. Levoid) Croy; twin sister, Mary Alchus; brother-in-law, Hollis Brock; five nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruben and Emma Dot; her husband of 39 years, Franklin; her son, Keith; and her sister, Letha.

Visitation will be one hour before the funeral service at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at the Punta Gorda chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home. Burial will be at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens in Punta Gorda immediately following the services. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home.

Robert S. Schirr

Robert Scott "Scott" Schirr, 49, of North Port, Fla., died Saturday, July 26, 2003.

He was born icon May 8, 1954, in La Porte, Ind., to Franklin and Ruth Schirr. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in Vietnam. He had been a resident of Englewood, Fla., for 20 years. He moved to North Port a year ago from Englewood. He was a service technician for A1 Superior Pest Control. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8203 in North Port.

He is survived by his father, Franklin Schirr of North Port; a brother, Tom Schirr of Petersburg, Ind.; and a sister, Rebecca J. Rupp of Glendale, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth (Burns) Schirr.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at VFW Post 8203 in North Port.

Memorial donations may be made to VFW Post 8203, P.O. Box 7154, North Port, FL 34287. Farley Funeral Home, North Port chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Edwin T. Senna

Edwin T. "Teddy" Senna, 58, of Lake Suzy, Fla., died Monday, July 28, 2003, at home after a brief illness with cancer.

He was born icon in New Bedford, Mass., and lived in New Bedford and Acushnet, Mass., until 14 years ago. He was a paratrooper and veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam. He was employed as a truck driver and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3296. He was an avid golfer, and coached little league and hockey. He was an amazing father, grandfather and husband.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Sullivan Senna of Lake Suzy; four sons, Scott Senna of Port Charlotte, Fla., Tommy Senna of New Bedford, Teddy Senna of North Port, Fla., and Jeffrey Senna of Port Charlotte; one daughter, Cortney Clune of North Port; and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 24515 Rampart Blvd., Port Charlotte, with military honors to follow at Deep Creek Golf and Country Club, 1260 San Cristobal Ave., Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by Ellenton Funeral Home, Ellenton, Fla.

Annie M. James

Annie Mae "Miley/Granny" James, 90, of Arcadia, Fla., died Monday, July 28, 2003.

She was born icon May 12, 1913, in Springfield, S.C., the daughter of Mackey and Annie I. James. She moved to Arcadia in 1958. She worked in many homes and cared for many children in the community (one in particular, Mae Francis, always remembered her on special occasions). She was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. Later she moved her membership to House of God Church of the Living God under Evelyn Jones. There she served as a faithful member in various auxiliaries.

She leaves to cherish her memory, three daughters, Jannie (Wes) Allen-Brazell of Arcadia, Lovie (Jerry) Tompkins and Dorothy James-Cain of Orlando, Fla.; four sons, Nathaniel (Eloise) James of Williston, Fla., Otis (Regina) James, Ardis (Zelphia) James and Johnny James of Arcadia; one sister, Addie Mae Isaac of Cincinnati, Ohio; 23 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; special friends, Jewel Fain and Lucille Morrison; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; 10 siblings; and a son, Harrison James.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at Hickson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at House of God Church, Alabama Avenue, Arcadia, with the Revs. Thelma Guice and Mary Green officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Arcadia. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hickson Funeral Home, Arcadia.

Adele T. McLean

Adele Thomas McLean, 93, of Arcadia, Fla., departed this life Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Mariner Health of Port Charlotte, Fla.

She was born icon April 29, 1910, in Whighman, Ga., to Cornelius Thomas and Jamor Jackson. She was married to James McLean. She was converted at age 19. She accepted Christ under the pastorship of the Rev. Archie Wooden, pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church in Cairo, Ga. She later moved to Florida and became a member of Keith Dominion.

She leaves to mourn her demise, a close and dedicated cousin, June Bartell of Arcadia; two nephews, Ellison Jackson of Whigham and Major Jackson of Enterprise, Ala.; one niece-in-law, Myrtice Jackson of Dixie, Ga.; cousins, the Rev. and Mrs. J.C. Jackson of Albany, Ga., Colen and Essie Mae Dixon of Waycross, Ga., and Vosie McCray of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, James McLean.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at Hickson Funeral Home, 142 S. Orange Ave., Arcadia. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Thelma Guice officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Arcadia. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hickson Funeral Home, Arcadia.

Donald B. Gallagher

Donald B. Gallagher, 66, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Fla. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society.

Mary R. Adams

Mary R. Adams, 83, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2003.

She was born icon June 12, 1920, in Langhorn, Pa., the daughter of Edward and Alma (Eye) Worthington. She retired from the New Jersey Fish & Game Commission, and came to this area from Absecon, N.J., in 1978. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Mary will be greatly missed by her husband of 56 years, Albert; daughters, Alma Jean O'Connor of Mahwah, N.J., and Mary Francis Adams of Bridgewater, N.J.; son, Albert Adams of Atlantic City, N.J.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Richard F. Burget

Richard F. "Dick" Burget, 78, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2003.

He was born icon May 20, 1925, in Gary, Ind., the son of Harry and Gladys (Eisnogle) Burget. Dick proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He came to this area in 1981 from Joliet, Ill., where he was a high school teacher for 30 years before retiring. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Joliet; Disabled American Veterans Chapter 82; Tin Can Sailors (National Association of Destroyer Veterans); American Legion Post 110 in Port Charlotte, Fla.; and Loyal Order of Moose 2121 in Port Charlotte.

Dick will be greatly missed by his wife of 55 years, Patricia "Pat"; daughters, Claudia (Larry) Kubuiski of Burr Ridge, Ill., and Paula (Paul) Jarot of Chiang Mai, Thailand; son, Scott Richard Burget of Port Charlotte; brother, Donald Burget of Merriville, Ind.; sister, Patsy Rush of Valparaiso, Ind.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Marie E. Hill

Marie E. Hill, 74, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Saturday, July 26, 2003.

She was born icon April 28, 1929, in East Burke, Vt. She was owner and operator of a ceramic shop in East Haven, Vt., before moving to Port Charlotte 11 years ago from East Haven. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in North Port, Fla., and American Legion Auxiliary in Lyndonville, Vt.

She is survived by a daughter, Teresa (Ronald) D'Aniello of Port Charlotte; son, Michael Newell of Brooks, Maine; grandson, Ronald D'Aniello Jr. of Boise, Idaho; granddaughter, Evelyn Williams of Port Charlotte; grandson, Andrew Newell of Old Town, Maine; three great-granddaughters; sister, Winnifred Cass of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; and sister-in-law, Barbara Woodward of West Burke, Vt.

Services will be private. Burial will be in East Haven Cemetery in East Haven. Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Venice chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Adam R. Peck

Tech. Sgt. Adam Robert Peck, 27, of Sarasota, Fla., and formerly of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Wednesday, July 23, 2003.

He was born icon May 13, 1976, in Stratford, Conn. He moved to Sarasota from Stratford in 1992. He served in the U.S. Air Force for eight years and was currently a technical sergeant and crew chief of F-16 fighter jets. He will be sorely missed by his parents, maternal and paternal grandparents and his entire family.

He is survived by his parents, Kathleen A. and Robert F. Anderson of Sarasota, and Dayv Peck of Stratford; sister, Amy Lynn Peck Detore of Sarasota; and niece, Sofia Rae Detore of Sarasota.

Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 31, at Siesta Key Beach, adjacent to the north end of the parking lot.

Donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are by Palms Funeral Home, Sarasota.

Alice M. Robinson

Alice M. Robinson, 102, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Friday, July 25, 2003.

She was born icon Sept. 29, 1900, in Royal Oak, Mich., to Owen and Ada Bromley. She moved to Englewood in 1987 from Royal Oak. Mrs. Robinson was a homemaker. She was a member of Royal Oak United Methodist Church and Englewood United Methodist Church and served with several church groups.

Survivors include her son, Kenneth Robinson of Englewood and Clarkston, Mich.; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester W. Robinson; two sisters; and three brothers.

Memorial services will be held Aug. 28, at White Chapel in Troy, Mich. A service will be held in Florida at a later date. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.

Alice M. Snyder

Alice M. Snyder, 97, of Hamilton, Ohio, and formerly of Englewood, Fla., passed away Monday, July 28, 2003, at Westover Retirement Community in Hamilton.

She was born icon March 28, 1906, in Butler County, Ohio, to Elizabeth Skelton and Paul J. Sauer. She attended Stockton School, Notre Dame Academy and Hamilton High School. She graduated from Mercy School of Nursing in 1931. On March 4, 1933, she married Kenneth H. Snyder in Oxford. Her career as a registered nurse spanned more than 40 years, including association with Mercy Hospital, The Bendix Corp. and Westover Retirement Home, as well as private-duty nursing. She spent winter months in Englewood with her sister, and regularly volunteered with Englewood Chamber of Commerce.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth (Phyllis); three grandchildren, Sarah Snyder of Portland, Conn., Reid (Amy) Snyder of Columbia, Md., and Neill (Lorraine) Snyder of Louisville, Ky.; three great-grandchildren, Garreth, Samantha and Nickolas Snyder; and a sister, Betty Myers of Englewood. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth H. Snyder, in 1954; and brothers, William J., Paul B. and Arch A. Sauer.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to Colonial Foundation for the Westover Campus, 520 Eaton Ave., Hamilton, OH 45013. Weigel Funeral Home, Hamilton, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary R. Nelson

Mary R. Nelson, 72, of Arcadia, Fla., died Tuesday, July 29, 2003.

She was born icon Oct. 15, 1930, in Arcadia. She was a lifetime resident of Arcadia. She was a homemaker. She was a member of North Hillsborough Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann (Lawrence) Estes of Palmdale, Fla., and Sue Nelson of Arcadia; two sons, Willis (Sue) Nelson of Arcadia and Harvey Allen of Palmdale; two sisters, Maybelle Albritton of Nocatee, Fla., and Daisy Hutson of Arcadia; two brothers, Barney Mansfield of Arcadia and Juril (Madelyn) Mansfield of Arcadia; 24 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Nelson; and sons, Terry Lee Nelson Sr. and Jimmy Lee Nelson.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at the chapel of Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at North Hillsborough Baptist Church, Arcadia. Burial will be in Joshua Creek Cemetery, Arcadia. Arrangements are by Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia.

Beatrice Carter

Beatrice Carter, 73, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.

Flora S. Corrie

Flora S. Corrie, 86, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at HQM of Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.

Orville C. Chossek

Orville C. Chossek, 85, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Mariner Health Center of Port Charlotte, where he had been a resident for the past one-and-a-half years.

He was born icon Sept. 17, 1917, in Ingalls, Mich., the son of John and Mary Chossek. He enlisted in the Army in 1938, served 30 years, and attained the rank of warrant officer, retiring to Port Charlotte in 1968. He was stationed in several bases in the United States, along with tours of duty in South America, Japan and Germany, serving in the counterintelligence branch of the Army. He married Rita Morin of Providence, R.I., on Dec. 7, 1942, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Dagget, Mich. Orville was a member of the American Legion, VFW and Elks Club, all of Port Charlotte.

Orville leaves behind his sister, Marion Peters of Carson City, Nev.; sister-in-law, Clara Chossek of Port Washington, Wis.; nephews, Walter and James Chossek of Milwaukee, Wis.; niece, Margaret Graham of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; cousins, Ruth (Wangerin) Hendra of Ishpeming, Mich., and Punta Gorda, Fla., Evelyn (Wangerin) Winter of Delaware, Ohio, and Karen (Wangerin) Gravenkamp of Milwaukee.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita, in 1998.

There will be no services. Orville will be interred next to his wife at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Capt. Ronald Goodman

Capt. Ronald Goodman, 64, U.S. Army (Ret.) of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Thursday, June 19, 2003, after a short bout with lung cancer. Capt. Goodman was a decorated career Army officer. He was awarded two Silver Stars and a Purple Heart for action against the enemy in the Vietname War.

He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth of Punta Gorda; one son, Scott Goodman and one daughter, Christy (Tony) Passarelli, both of Denver, Colo.; one granddaughter, Daniella; his mother, Dixie Goodman; and sister, Mary Jane (Eldon) Korf of Yuma, Colo.

Capt. Goodman's body was cremated according to his wishes. The family will receive condolences at SHIVA from June 20 through June 22 at 1205 Pine Siskin Drive, Punta Gorda.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are by Veterans Cremation & Burial Society, Clearwater, Fla.

Alice A. Hardy

Alice Ann Hardy, 63, of Cocoa, Fla., and formerly of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2003.

She was born icon Jan. 6, 1940, in Montgomery, Ala., the daughter of Richard and Irene (Conley) Pruett. She was working as a dental assistant when she met and married her husband, David, who was in the Air Force. During their marriage, she was able to travel extensively, as he was stationed in Okinawa, Amsterdam and Spain. While they were living in Amsterdam, she began working as cashier in the commissary. Upon David's retirement, they moved to Rockledge, Fla., in September 1985 from Madrid, Spain. Ann joined the Wal-Mart team in Rockledge and was a customer service representative until 1995. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Alice will be greatly missed by her husband, David H. Hardy, CMS Ret.; sons, Maj. David H. (Leigh) Hardy Jr. of Newport News, Va., Maj. Carlos (Joy) Rice of Great Falls, Mont., and Juan (Kim) Santiago of Deltona, Fla.; brother, Richard L. Pruett of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Sabrina, Arielle, Tabitha, Stephanie and Jessica Hardy, Kevin, Miranda, Christopher and Alex Rice and Isabella Santiago; 16 nieces and nephews; and her caregivers, Susie, Karen and Bev.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Mary Francis.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services, Punta Gorda. The service in celebration of Alice's life will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Geraldine F. Ingratta

Geraldine Florence Ingratta, 73, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2003, in Port Charlotte.

She was born icon in Elmhurst, Ill. She has been in Port Charlotte for five years coming from Chicago, Ill. Geraldine was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte.

Geraldine is survived by her son, Don Ingratta of Chicago; daughter, Sandra Noland of Port Charlotte; grandchildren, Dwayne (Melanie) Noland of Port Charlotte, Matt, Becky and Christopher Ingratta, all of Chicago; and niece, Darlene Lighthouser of Chicago.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, 2405 Harbor Blvd., Port Charlotte. Interment is private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Geraldine's name to American Cancer Society, 22107 Elmira Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33952.

Arthur Lewis

Arthur Lewis, 80, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, Fla.

He was born icon Aug. 22, 1922, in Hazard, Ky., to the late Chester and Ida Lewis. He was a former tool and die maker. Arthur moved from Dayton, Ohio, to Fort Myers 30 years ago, and from Fort Myers to the Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda area 20 years ago. He was an active member of Church of God-Fort Ogden in Fort Ogden, Fla., and helped build Souls Harbour Church of God in Punta Gorda. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 57 years, Mildred L. Lewis; two sons, James E. Lewis of Dalzell, S.C., and Ronald L. Lewis of Dayton, Ohio; three daughters, Marti Caskey and Willene Wooten, both of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Robin A. Lewis of Fort Myers; a brother, the Rev. James R. Lewis of Somerset, Ky.; two sisters, Ernestine Perris of Virginia Beach, Va., and Earlene Chance of Dayton; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Roberson Funeral Home, Punta Gorda. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, at Souls Harbour Church of God, Punta Gorda, with the Rev. Johnie Morgan of Church of God-Fort Ogden officiating. Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Port Charlotte.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Punta Gorda chapel.
