Nair M. Puleo

Nair M. Puleo, 63, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fla.

She was born icon May 23, 1940, in Argentina and moved to Port Charlotte six years ago from Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a retired preschool teacher. She was a member of Community Life Center in Port Charlotte. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and will be missed by all.

She is survived by her loving husband, Antonino Puleo of Port Charlotte; two daughters, Jacqueline H. Passeggiata of Dix Hills, N.Y., and Claudia E. Nicolosi of Port Charlotte; three sisters, Consuelo Mendez of Brazil, Querine Molinari of Lido Beach, N.Y., and Emma Grippi of Queens, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Felix O. Coyle of Community Life Center officiating. Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte chapel.

William Layport

William "Florida Gator" Layport, 33, of Arcadia, Fla., died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in Sarasota, Fla.

He was born icon Aug. 23, 1969, in Wauchula, Fla. He had lived in Arcadia for eight years, coming from Michigan. He was a Baptist. Mr. Layport was a heavy equipment operator for John Bergsteiner Inc.

Survivors include his wife, Dottie; children, William Christopher, Floyd Stanley and Codey Charles; father, William Layport Sr. of Michigan; mother, Ethel Faye Johnson of Arcadia; two brothers, Stanley (Summer) Layport and Michael (Tammy) Johnson, all of Georgia; one sister, Teresa (Jody) Aldorman of Frostproof, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.

Visitation is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, June 20, 2003, at Robarts Family Garden Chapel, Wauchula. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003, at the chapel, with Burial in Fort Green Baptist Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Robarts Family Funeral Home, Wauchula.

William A. McCracken

William Allan McCracken, 94, of Arcadia, Fla., died Thursday, June 19, 2003.

He was born icon May 24, 1909, in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada. He moved to Arcadia in 1980 from Somers, Conn. He was a superintendent of schools in Somers for 15 years. He was a Rotarian for 40 years and attended Arcadia Rotary Club faithfully. He helped build the first U.S. Navy aircraft carrier and was on the carrier when it was launched. He was a member of The Congregational Church.

He is survived by his wife, Alice L. McCracken of Arcadia; a daughter, Kathleen M. Beal of North Brooklin, Maine; and a son, William A. McCracken of Denver, Colo.; two grandchildren, Dana Beal and Stacey Beal; and one great-grandchild, Kaitlin Beal.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, one hour prior to funeral services at Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia. Burial will be in Pembroke Centre Cemetery, Pembroke, Mass.

Flowers or donations may be made to Arcadia Rotary Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1491, Arcadia, FL 34265.

Arrangements are by Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia.

M. Clay Nussbaum

M. Clay Nussbaum, 65, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at DeSoto Memorial Hospital in Arcadia.

He was born icon May 10, 1938, in Leeton, Mo. He came to Arcadia three years ago from Warsaw, Mo. He was a concrete finisher for 45 years.

He is survived by a special friend, Betty Barrick of Arcadia; a mother, Stattie Nussbaum of Leeton; five brothers, Vernon L. Nussbaum of Warsaw, Curtis W. Nussbaum, Bobby L. Nussbaum and Verl Nussbaum, all of Leeton, and Harley D. Nussbaum of Orangeburg, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Cleatus Nussbaum.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 28, 2003, at Grace Lutheran Church, Arcadia, with the Rev. Theodore R. Hanus officiating.

John Currie Becker

John Currie Becker, 89, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003.

He was born icon in Detroit, Mich., on May 18, 1913. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1935 and also attended the University of Michigan Law School.

Jack was a loving family man, an avid sports fan, a golfer and a civic leader. He was named Man of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce in Marion, Ind.

During his 30-year career with Fisher Body, he served as director of industrial relations. Jack and his family lived in Flint, Mich.; Lansing, Mich.; Atlanta, Ga.; East Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Marion.

He is survived and was lovingly cared for by his wife, Maxine; his two sons, Robert H. (Jane) Becker and Richard L. (Lorrie) Becker; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Ballard Becker.

A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at South Port Square town hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hope Hospice or a charity of choice.

Lee Memorial Park Funeral Home, Lehigh Acres, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth S. Jordan

Kenneth S. Jordan, 89, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte.

He was born icon Dec. 23, 1913, in Attleboro, Mass., and moved to Port Charlotte 13 years ago from Wakefield, Mass. He was retired from the souvenir manufacturing business. He was an Episcopalian.

He is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn G. Jordan of Port Charlotte; a daughter, Sharon Wilson of Orlando, Fla.; a son, Rand O. Jordan of Port Charlotte; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Private memorial services will be held at later date.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Linda Diana LaLone

Linda Diana LaLone, 54, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital.

Born on Feb. 14, 1948, in Mishawaka, Ind., to Kenneth and Blanche (Smith) Miller, she had been a resident of Port Charlotte since 1999, coming from South Bend, Ind. Mrs. LaLone was employed by SunTrust Bank in Port Charlotte as a teller for the past two years. She was an Auxiliary member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Survivors include her husband of 36 years, Frank A. LaLone of Port Charlotte; two sons, Eric A. LaLone of La Porte, Ind., and Gregory E. LaLone of Punta Gorda, Fla.; four sisters, Phyllis Moore of Elkhart, Ind., Joan Lower of Granger, Ind., Sharon Fisher of Leesburg, Fla., and Carol Lynn Eby of Elkhart, Ind.; one brother, Robert Miller of Mishawaka, Ind.; and four grandchildren, Kristin, Neil, Ashley and Austin.

She was predeceased by her parents and one son, Robert.

Visitation will be held 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today, Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at Englewood Community Funeral Home, 3070 S. McCall Road, Englewood. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at the funeral home with the Rev. Gerald Switzer officiating. Burial will follow in Gulf Pines Memorial Park Cemetery, Englewood.

Englewood Community Funeral Home, Englewood, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Maitland

Mary Maitland, 63, of Crossville, Tenn., and formerly of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center, Tenn.

Mrs. Maitland was born icon Nov. 6, 1939, in Martinsburg, W.Va., to the late Kenneth and Mary Hodges Bowers. Mrs. Maitland was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a Girl Scout leader, lady of the Elks and an organizer of the Charlotte County Air Show in Punta Gorda, Fla.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Roger Maitland of Crossville; one daughter, Susan Ebersole of Punta Gorda; one son, Randall Maitland of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a sister, Sally Aldrich of Bloomington, Ill.; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at D.M. Goff Funeral Home, Monterey, Tenn., until funeral services at 3 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Claude Hendrickson and the Rev. Roger Paavola will officiate, with interment to follow in Martinsburg.

Memorials may be given to the Elks Benevolent Fund for Nurses Scholarship by contacting the funeral home.

D.M. Goff Funeral Home, Monterey, Tenn., is in charge of arrangements.

Paul Marenchin

Paul Marenchin, 85, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center, Punta Gorda.

Mr. Marenchin was born icon April 18, 1917, in Sharon, Pa. He had been a resident of Punta Gorda for 14 years, coming from Cable, Wis. He retired from Westinghouse, then opened his own resort in Lake Namakagon, Wis., and later drove a school bus. Mr. Marenchin also served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, was a volunteer at Charlotte Regional Medical Center and was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Gertrude; three children, James (Janice) Marenchin of Rapid City, S.D., Carole Marenchin of Punta Gorda and Kathy Marenchin of Pine City, Minn.; a brother, Michael; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 5200 Indian Springs Road, Punta Gorda.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the American Heart Association.

Ryan Spurrier Shinn

Ryan Spurrier Shinn, 28, of North Port, Fla., died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003.

He was born icon Sept. 14, 1974, in Sarasota, Fla., and lived in Boca Grande, Fla., most of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Brandy, of Port Charlotte, Fla.; his parents, Gail E. and Thomas McClenithan, both of Sarasota; a daughter, Alyssa Shinn of Sarasota; two stepsisters, Renee McClenithan of Bradenton, Fla., and Kathleen Butera of Sarasota; a brother, Aaron L. of Englewood, Fla.; and two stepbrothers, Timmy McClenithan of Bradenton and Thomas L. McClenithan of Sarasota.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at Palms Funeral Home, 170 Honore Ave., Sarasota. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Alyssa Shinn Trust Fund at any Bank of America.

Palms Funeral Home, Sarasota, is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Virginia Strout

Annie Virginia Strout, 67, of Arcadia, Fla., died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, in Arcadia.

Annie was born icon Jan. 31, 1936, in Westbrook, Maine, and moved to Arcadia 20 years ago from North Fort Myers, Fla. She was a homemaker, a former Lee County school nurse and Red Cross volunteer and was of the Protestant faith. Annie loved to quilt and sew and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, as they were her pride and joy.

Survivors include her husband, Reginald L. Strout Sr.; a son, Reginald L. Strout Jr. of Anchorage, Alaska; three daughters, Connie (Terry) Strout Tawney of Cocoa, Fla., Roxanne (Jerry) Strout McPherson of North Fort Myers and Heidi (Mark) Strout Collins of Cape Coral, Fla.; a brother, Timothy King of New York; two sisters, Ruth Pike of Arizona and Linda King of Maine; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald, Jerry and Frederick King.

Private graveside funeral services will be held at a later date at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in memory of Mrs. Strout be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Kathleen C. Stover, 89, of Englewood, Fla., died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Harbor Healthcare. Arrangements by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.

Catherine M. Gilmore

Catherine M. Gilmore, 79, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital, Port Charlotte, Fla.

She was born icon Nov. 1, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Punta Gorda in 1991 from Dayton, Ohio. She was a retired school secretary for the public schools in Jackson Township, N.J. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Punta Gorda.

She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, James J. Gilmore of Punta Gorda; a daughter, Catherine M. Kazmin of Mexico; six sons, Timothy E. Gilmore of Jackson, N.J., James C. Gilmore of Tampa, Fla., Dennis F. Gilmore of Stratford, N.J., Joseph P. Gilmore of Dayton, Ohio, Lawrence G. Gilmore of Lakeland, Fla., and Kevin W. Gilmore of Jackson; a sister, Ann Kadel of Cape Coral, Fla.; a brother, William Ozmon of Babylon, N.Y.; 23 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Roberson Funeral Home, Punta Gorda Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Indian Springs Cemetery, Punta Gorda.

Shirley I. Hall

Shirley I. Hall, 75, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Monday, Feb. 3, 2003.

She was born icon in Darby, Pa., daughter of the late Roy and Beulah Zimmerman. Shirley came to this area in 1984 from Brookhaven, Pa. She was a Seventh-Day Adventist, a homemaker and mother.

Shirley will be greatly missed by her two daughters, Shirley Erickson of Driftwood, Pa., and Susan Hall of Punta Gorda; a son, Terry Hall, of Port Charlotte, Fla., and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A gathering of friends will be held 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services of Punta Gorda.

The family requests memorials be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
