Arvilla R. McBride

Arvilla R. McBride, 79, went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 22, 2002.

Mrs. McBride had been a resident of Port Charlotte, Fla., since 1973, coming from Kennebunk, Maine. Arvilla was a former member of the Port Charlotte Country Club and loved to golf. She was also a member of West Kennebunk Methodist Church in Kennebunk.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald (Duke) McBride; her son, Alan McBride of Hayward, Calif.; and sisters, Ella Curtis of West Kennebunk and Joan Haggard of Sun City, Ariz.

Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.

Harry Duprec

Harry Duprec, 67, of Ona, Fla., passed away Dec. 22, 2002, in Zolfo Springs, Fla.

He was born icon in Hardee County and had lived in Ona all of his life. He was a member and deacon of New Zion Baptist Church for many years. Harry worked in agriculture all of his life with cattle, grove, and vegetables, and received a commendation in 1978 for Outstanding Farmer of the Year. He served in the Florida National Guard for more than 30 years, retiring Dec. 21, 1984, as a lieutenant colonel. He received many commendations from the National Guard for his outstanding and faithful service over the years.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Gloria; a son, Wayne (Suzanne) of Ona; a daughter, Yvonne Abbott of Ona; two brothers, G.A. of Ona and Kenneth of Arcadia; two sisters, Hazel Blount of Jacksonville, Fla., and Lenore Freeman of Tampa, Fla.; three grandchildren, Lori Abbott Hay of Wauchula, Fla., and Stacey and Brittany Abbott of Ona; two great-grandchildren, Savannah and Dakota of Wauchula; five nieces, Martha and Faith Appleby of Jacksonville, Marti and Alex Berry of Crestview, Fla., and Tracy Willis of Macon, Ga.; and three nephews, Charlie and Chris Appleby of Jacksonville and Bryant Berry of Crestview.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Dec. 27, at New Zion Baptist Church, with Burial in New Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 26, at Robarts Family Garden Chapel, Wauchula.

Memorials may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, c/o New Zion Baptist Church, or LifePath Hospice, 3010 W. Azeele St., Tampa, FL 33609.

Elizabeth M. Worth

Elizabeth M. "Betty" Worth, 71, of Fort Ogden, Fla., died Dec. 22, 2002, at her residence.

She was born icon June 3, 1931, in Pine Level, Fla., and was a life long resident of DeSoto County. She attended the Jehovah's Witnesses church in Arcadia, Fla. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Lloyd R. Worth Sr. of Fort Ogden; five sons, Robert Douglas of Gainesville, Fla., Russel A. Suco of Keystone Heights, Fla., Eugene Douglas Felipe, Lloyd Worth Jr. and John Wayne Worth, all of Fort Ogden; two daughters, Sarah Maxine Goodwin of Fort Myers, Fla., and Virginia Maxine Harwood all of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two brothers, George McIver of North Carolina and Ed Russell McIver of Fort Ogden; three sisters, Louise Sweeting, Frances McConnell and Linda Cerna, all of Brownville, Fla.; 25 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Services will be private. Robarts Funeral Home Inc., Arcadia, is in charge of arrangements.

Edward A. Hudgens

Edward A. Hudgens, 92, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Dec. 22, 2002. Arrangements are by the Punta Gorda Chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home.

Walter J. Brown

Walter J. Brown, 86, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Dec. 20, 2002, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Nursing Center, Port Charlotte.

He was born icon March 24, 1916, in Buffalo, N.Y., and moved to Port Charlotte In 1981 from Framingham, Mass. He was a retired property manager for Raytheon Corp. He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and the Third Order of St. Francis.

He is survived by a daughter, Judith Ann (William) Barry of South Weymouth, Mass.; a son, Kenneth Walter (Muriel) Brown of Naples, Fla.; five grandchildren, William, Mary Beth, Michael, Deborah and Diane; and a great-grandchild, Matthew. He was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred F. Brown, in 1990.

A memorial Mass will be offered 10:30 a.m. Dec. 27, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Port Charlotte. Inurnment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte/DeSoto Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 494708, Port Charlotte, FL 33949. Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Walter D. Evans

Walter David Evans, 83, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Dec. 20, 2002.

He was born icon Jan. 9, 1919, in Youngstown, Ohio, and moved to Florida in 1982 from Pittsburgh, Pa. Mr. Evans was a retired cost control engineer in the steel industry. He served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of San Antonio Catholic Church in Port Charlotte.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Nan B.; daughters, Diane Porter of Spencer, Ohio, and Mercy Kraft of Maui, Hawaii; sisters, Esther Latacki of DeLand, Fla., and Ruth Whiteleather of Lake Milton, Ohio; grandchildren, John Porter of Lusby, Md., Jason Porter of Seville, Ohio, Lisa Kraft of San Rafael, Calif., and Katie Kraft of Santa Fe, N.M.; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Pittsburgh. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Wilbur Stewart

Wilbur "Stu" Stewart, 82, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Dec. 22, 2002, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte.

Born July 3, 1920, in Akron, Ohio, he retired to the Port Charlotte area in 1981 from Canton, Ohio, where he owned and operated Aluminum Sales Co. of Canton. A member of the Masonic Order, he attended Peace Lutheran Church in Port Charlotte and was a veteran of World War II, serving in both the U.S. Coast Guard and the Army.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 58 years, Ruth M.; four daughters, Susie (Don) Randolph of Lake Suzy, Fla., Sally Anne Gambrel of Clearwater, Fla., Sandy (David) Auler of Raleigh, N.C., and Sydney Sher of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, twin Wayne Stewart of Minerva, Ohio, and Glenn Stewart of Phoenix, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and 14 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 P.M. Thursday, December 26, 2002, at Peace Lutheran Church in Port Charlotte.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Movement Disorder Society for Parkinson's Disease, 126 E. Olympia Ave., Punta Gorda, FL 33950; or to the Gideons Society, c/o Bay Leaf Baptist Church, 12200 Bay Leaf Church Road, Raleigh, NC 27614. Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Wanda J. Truszkowski

Wanda J. Truszkowski, 75, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Dec. 21, 2002.

She was born icon Feb. 3, 1927, in Pittsburgh, Pa. She came to this area in 1973 from there. Wanda loved and cared for her family. She was a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church.

Wanda will be greatly missed by her husband, Steve; son Mark Truszkowski of Momaca, Pa.; sister, Joanna Gudenburr of Pittsburgh; and two grandchildren. Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services.

Marie S. Stankiewicz

Marie Sophia (nee Bieber) Stankiewicz, 74, died at her home Dec. 18, 2002, in Arcadia, Fla.

She was born icon Jan. 3, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Amelia C. (nee Norbeck) Bieber and William J. Bieber. She grew up in Philadelphia and moved to New Jersey in 1952. She lived in Erial, N.J., until moving to Arcadia in 1988. She was a homemaker and a loving wife and mother.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Stanley S. Stankiewicz of Arcadia; and children, Carolyn M. (Howard) Martin of Arcadia, Annette L. (William) Liebermann of Runnemede N.J., Stephen V. (Juanita) Stankiewicz of Barrington, N.J., and Nancy E. (William) Helliwell of Berlin, N.J.; and four grandchildren, Christopher T. Liebermann of Silver Springs, Md., Loreli J. Liebermann of Runnemede, N.J., Katherine "Katie" M. Helliwell and Megan M. Helliwell, both of Berlin, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, donations to your favorite charity are requested by the family. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.

Sandra L. Ulrick

Sandra L. Ulrick of Candor, N.Y., died Dec. 19, 2002, at home.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Dec. 28, at Candor Funeral Parlour, 137 Main St., Candor, N.Y. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be held in the spring at Woodbridge Cemetery in Catatonk. N.Y.

Elaine Andresen of North Port, Fla., passed away Dec. 18, 2002, at home. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte, Fla.

Donald E. Boos, 84, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Dec. 18, 2002, at Port Charlotte Care and Rehabilitation Center in Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by Paul Schelm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.

Leo M. Enright

Leo M. Enright, 73, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Dec. 18, 2002, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte, Fla.

George S. Filos

George S. Filos, 87, of Englewood (Sarasota County), Fla., passed away Dec. 21, 2002, at Englewood Community Hospital. Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood, is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond A. Herve

Raymond A. Herve, 82, of Englewood (Sarasota County), Fla., passed away Dec. 22, 2002, at Northside Hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla. Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood, is in charge of arrangements.

Robert T. Miller

Robert Theodore Miller, 78, died Dec. 14, 2002, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda, Fla.

He was born icon in Ohio, where he lived for 48 years before moving to Delaware. He had been settled in Florida for the last 27 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II; worked for National Cash Register in Dayton, Ohio, for 33 years; and, in his retirement, owned a mom-and-pop convenience store called Butcher Boy in Dewey, Del. After moving to Florida, he worked for Roger Dean Chevrolet in Cape Coral, Fla. Mr. And Mrs. Miller traveled across the country in their motor home for many years, meeting wonderful people along the way. They recently settled in Ventura Lakes Community in Punta Gorda, where they found their paradise on earth.

He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Caroline; two daughters and their husbands, Pamela (Bruce) of Lebanon, Ohio, and Nancy (Rick) of Riverside, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Rene, Mickey, Janell, Heather, Ray, Eric and Nicole; and two brothers, Harry of Tampa, Fla., and William of Dayton, Ohio.

There will be a celebration of life at 9 a.m. Dec. 20, at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home of Punta Gorda, followed by a memorial Mass at 11 a.m. at San Antonio Catholic Church.

Jeannette H. Stark

Jeannette H. Stark, 91, of Arcadia, Fla., died Dec. 16, 2002, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.

She was born icon Sept. 18, 1911, in Rochester, N.Y., and came to Arcadia eight years ago from Lantana, Fla. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Arcadia.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Rushing of Texas and Jacqueline (Hal) Thompson of Arcadia; a sister, Mildred Widmer of Rochester, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Robarts Funeral Home Inc., Arcadia, is in charge of arrangements.

Hilda B. Bennett

Hilda B. Bennett, 84, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Dec. 2, 2002.

She was born icon Sept. 29, 1918, in Eagle Lake, Fla., and was a resident of Punta Gorda for 81 years. She was a Charlotte County employee for more than 30 years. Our beloved mother and grandmother has gone to be with her other loved ones.

She is survived by sons, Edward (Linda) Bennett and William (Shirley) Bennett, both of Punta Gorda; granddaughters, Suzie Bennett Black of Michigan, Stacy Bennett Sboto, Keli Bennett, both of Punta Gorda, Shirley Lumpkins and Dottie Shepherd, both of Maryland; grandsons, Edward Bennett of Punta Gorda, Bobby Bennett of Wauchula, Fla., Tommy Shepherd and Kenny Shepherd, both of Maryland; eight great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bull" Herman Bennett, in 1977; and a son, Robert Bennett, in 1972.

A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Dec. 5, at the Punta Gorda Chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home. The Rev. David Koon, Mrs. Bennett's nephew, will officiate. Burial arrangements will take place privately at a later date, at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens, Punta Gorda.

Marco J. Caraccia

Col. Marco J. Caraccia, 80, U.S. Army (retired), of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Dec. 2, 2002, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center Hospital in Punta Gorda. He was 80.

Born Dec. 2, 1922, in New York City, N.Y., Col. Caraccia first entered military service with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He continued military service with the U.S. Army, attending Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., the Army War College in Carlisle, Pa., and Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Va. He served in both Korea and Vietnam and served two tours of duty at the Pentagon, retiring from active duty in 1977. During his military career, he received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with "V" device, Meritorious Service medal, Joint Service Commendation medal, Army Commendation medal, World War II Victory medal, Korean Service medal, Vietnam Service and Campaign medals, United Nations Korean Service medal, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm medal and Master Parachutist badge. He moved to this area in 1978 from Vint Hill Station in Virginia. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Punta Gorda, serving at the altar and as a lector, Eucharistic minister and CCD teacher. He also served on the board of directors for Catholic Charities for the Venice Diocese and was a mentor at Sally Jones Elementary School and a guardian ad litem.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Margit E. Caraccia; two sons, Mark Caraccia of Wilmington, Del., and Christopher Caraccia of North Carolina; a stepdaughter, Judy Wynekoop, and her daughters, Katherine and Elizabeth Wynekoop, all of Fort Myers, Fla.; two brothers, Joseph Caraccia of Virginia and Francis Caraccia of Fort Smith, Ariz.; a sister, Josephine Christopher of Holley, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Dana James and a great-granddaughter, Angelica James, both of Fayetteville, N.C. A daughter, Katherine Caraccia, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Dec. 6, at Roberson Funeral Home, 215 Mary St., Punta Gorda, with a Mass of Christian Burial to begin shortly after at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by Burial with military honors at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens in Punta Gorda.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association, Charlotte/DeSoto Chapter, P.O. Box 494708, Port Charlotte, FL 33949. Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Punta Gorda Chapel.

Sybil J. Collins

Sybil J. Collins, 87, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Dec. 1, 2002, at her residence.

She was born icon May 24, 1915, in Georgetown, British Guiana, South America, and moved to Port Charlotte in 1989 from Goshen, N.Y. She was a retired photograph editor for Chemical Week magazine and a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Port Charlotte.

She is survived by a son, Daniel A. Collins III of Port Charlotte; and a cousin, Claudine Emanuel of Port Charlotte.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 6, at St. James Episcopal Church, 1365 Viscaya Drive, Port Charlotte. The Rev. Stephen K. Jacobson will officiate. Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Jack Gelato

Jack Gelato, 78, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Nov. 30, 2002.

He was born icon May 29, 1924, in Jersey City, N.J., to Joseph and Kathryn (Murray) Gelato. He came to this area in 1986 from E. Stroudsburg, Pa., where he was the owner of Jack's Exxon. He served his country in the Navy during World War II. Jack was very active in the communities where he lived and was a member of the Masonic Order in Secaucus, N.J., and the Lions Club and American Legion Post 103, both in Punta Gorda. He was also a member of United Church of Christ, Punta Gorda.

Jack will be greatly missed by his wife, Kathryn; daughter, Barbara Buzako of Parker, Colo.; son, James Gelato of Ocean View, Del.; sister, Florence Schultz of New Jersey; niece, Ruth Schultz of Pompton Lakes, N.J.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service in celebration of Jack's life will be at 11 a.m. Dec. 5, at United Church of Christ in Punta Gorda. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Punta Gorda Lions Foundation, P.O. Box 510915, Punta Gorda, FL 33951. Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services.

Dorothy A. Letson

Dorothy A. Letson, 80, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Nov. 29, 2002, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Mrs. Letson was born icon Sept. 3, 1922, in New Hartford, N.Y., and has been a resident of Punta Gorda since 1973. She was a member of Peace River Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary E. Letson; and a grandson, Jason W. Letson, both of Punta Gorda.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 4, at Charlotte Memorial Gardens, 5200 Indian Springs Road, Punta Gorda. Arrangements are by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home.

Robert G. Ricketts

Robert George Ricketts, 38, of New York, formerly of Port Charlotte, Fla., died suddenly Nov. 20, 2002, in Los Angeles, Calif.

He was born icon May 13, 1964, in Jamaica, West Indies, and migrated here in 1987 from Jamaica.

He is survived by his wife, Angella; children, Aron, Leon, Sherika and Shaneka; his mother, Violet Ricketts and his father, Vincent Ricketts; brothers, Bernard, Dwight, Levi, Winston, Oswald and Delroy; sisters, Cynthia, Pansy, Valarie; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many cousins.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 6, at James A. McKee Funeral Home, North Port, Fla. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Dec. 7, at First Baptist Church of Port Charlotte, officiated by the Rev. William W. Frank. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte.
