James J. DuHamel

James J. DuHamel, 93, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly of Brooklyn and Babylon, N.Y., died Sept. 29, 2002.

Mr. DuHamel was an assistant treasurer of the American Stock Exchange and served as treasurer to the North Babylon School District. He was a proud member of the North Babylon Fire Department and the Babylon Tuna Club.

He was the beloved father of James J. DuHamel Jr., Paul DuHamel, William DuHamel, Philip DuHamel, Dorothy Cofone and Elizabeth Haslam; and the loving grandfather of 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. His wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Smith, preceded him in death.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 2 in the Port Charlotte Chapel of the Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Oct. 3, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, corner of Charlotte and Taylor in Punta Gorda. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Queens, N.Y. Condolences may be sent to James J. DuHamel Jr., 217 Columbia St., Dunellen, NJ 08812.

Ripert F. Polycarpe

Ripert F. Polycarpe, 69, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sept. 29, 2002, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Nursing Center in Port Charlotte.

He was born icon Sept. 24, 1933, in Jacmel, Haiti, and moved to Port Charlotte 4 years ago from Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a taxi cab driver in New York City, N.Y., for 11 years before retiring. He was a member of the Eben-Ezer Haitian Baptist Church of Port Charlotte.

He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Genevieve Polycarpe of Port Charlotte; two daughters, Myrlande Laurent of Fort Myers, Fla., and Marjorie Polycarpe of Uniondale, Long Island, N.Y.; two sons, Manasse Polycarpe of Uniondale and Jean-Marc Polycarpe of Port Charlotte; a sister, Odette Polycarpe of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti; three brothers, Georges Polycarpe of Port Charlotte, Marcel Polycarpe of Westbury, Long Island, and Hubert Polycarpe of Jacmel, Haiti; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 4, at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Oct. 5, at Eben-Ezer Haitian Baptist Church, 17195 Oakleaf Ave., Port Charlotte, with the Rev. Enoc Toby officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eben-Ezer Haitian Baptist Church, P.O. Box 380996, Murdock, FL 33938-0996. Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home Port Charlotte Chapel.

Mary Rothe

Mary Rothe, 85, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Oct. 1, 2002.

She was born icon Aug. 25, 1917, in Paterson, N.J., to the late Rudolph and Theresa (Hansen) Zimmermann. She came to this area seven years ago from Saddle Brook, N.J. She loved caring for her family.

Mary will be greatly missed by her daughter, Marylou (Steven) Sesak of Port Charlotte; grandchildren, Randy McKay and Richard McKay, both of New Jersey, Christine Stevens of Holiday, Fla., and Charlene Rothe of South Dakota; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 2, at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services. The service in celebration of Mary's life will follow, with the Rev. Bob Carlson officiating. Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services.

Rolland E. Weibley Sr.

Rolland Edward Weibley Sr., 89, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sept. 29, 2002, at Tandem Health Care of Port Charlotte.

He was born icon Jan. 9, 1913, in Altoona, Pa., and moved to Port Charlotte in 1984 from Paris, Tenn. He was a retired aircraft tool inspector for Avco Corp. of Nashville, Tenn. Mr. Weibley was a member of Port Charlotte United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of Landmark Lodge 127 F&AM of Baltimore, Md. He was a former member of the Port Charlotte Yacht Club, the Shuffleboard Club of Port Charlotte and Elks Lodge 2153 of Port Charlotte. During his retirement years in Port Charlotte, Mr. Weibley wrote numerous "Letters to the Editor" to the Charlotte Sun on various subjects.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Gladys Irene Weibley of Port Charlotte; two daughters, Linda (Rick) Black of Rock Island, Tenn., and Marcia Carter of Marshfield, Tenn.; a son, Rolland E. (Rachel) Weibley Jr. of Weybridge Surry, England; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 3, at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 4, at Port Charlotte United Methodist Church in the New Room, with the Rev. James R. Kuse officiating. Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte.

John E. Woods Jr.

John E. Woods Jr., 70, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Sept. 30, 2002.

John was born icon in Boston, Mass., on May 19, 1932, the son of John E. and Elenore (O'Donoughue) Woods. John lived most of his life in Cohasset, Mass., and raised his family there. He graduated from Tabor Academy and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. He went on to earn a Master's License, U. S. Merchant Marine, retiring from Moran Towing and Transportation Co. in New York and Miami. John was a member of American Legion Post 110, Destroyer Escort Association of Southwest Florida, Propeller Club of the United States, Port of Boston. John served his country in the U.S. Navy.

John is survived by his very best friend and wife, Jackie Woods; son, Capt. John E. (Martha) Woods III of Greentown, Pa.; a daughter, Alison (Robert) Fahlberg of Richland, Wash.; three granddaughters and a grandson; stepchildren, Blake Dolloff of Port Charlotte, Laura (Dolloff) Gaura of Port Charlotte, Steven Dolloff of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and Craig Dolloff of Duxbury, Mass.; three stepgrandsons and three stepgranddaughters; a sister, Margaret (Woods) Harrington of Longmeadow, Mass., and a brother, James Woods of Chatham, Mass. and Pine Island, Fla.; and many cousins, nephews and nieces. John was preceded in death by his parents and a dear sister, Joanne (Woods) Sweeney.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society, Port Charlotte.

Janet W. Marschall

Janet W. Marschall, 64, of Gulf Cove, Fla., passed away Sept. 30, 2002.

She was born icon May 14, 1938, in Janesville, Wis., to the late Joseph and Irene (Keokpe) Williams. She came to this area in 1981 from St. Cloud, Fla. Janet was a graduate of Monticello College in Wisconsin. She worked as a CNA for several nursing homes and adult living facilities before retiring. She was of the Lutheran faith.

Janet will be greatly missed by her daughters, Nicole Pelc of Englewood, Fla., and Wendy DeGennaro of St. Cloud; sister, Judith Hoffman of Chandler, Okla.; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services for Janet will be private. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238. Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services.

Gertrude P. Brainerd

Gertrude P. Brainerd, 78, of North Port, Fla., died Sept. 30, 2002.

She was born icon Feb. 19, 1924, in Canton, Ill., and moved to North Port 20 years ago from O'Fallon, Ill. Mrs. Brainerd retired as head of the English department at Belleville Area College in Belleville, Ill. In her 36-year teaching career, Mrs. Brainerd taught English, Latin and French. She held a bachelor's degree from Western Illinois University and a master's degree from Indiana University and continued her education for 32 years. She was listed in Who's Who of American Women. She was one of 12 women in the United States to head the English department of a college or university. She was a former member of North Port Elks and North Port Writing Club. She loved to read and volunteered many hours at her local libraries.

Survivors include her loving brother, John E. Perkins of Fort Myers, Fla.; cousins, Roger D. Perkins of Fort Myers, Donald S. Perkins of Lehigh, Fla., and Patty Ann Grose of Canton, Ill.; uncle, Robert Perkins of Coos Bay, Ore.; stepchildren, Kathy Nehring of St. Louis, Mo., Shirley Casillas of Overland, Park, Kan., Robert Brainard of Cape Fair, Mo., and Robyn Gross of Creve Coeur, Mo.; and a good friend, Joanne Richardson.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL. 34238.

Mary E. White

Mary Esther White, 98, of North Port, Fla., died Sept. 28, 2002.

She was born icon April 2, 1904, in Avon, Ind., to Daniel S. and Emily (nee Mark) Barker. She was a teacher at Avon Elementary School in Avon, retiring in 1961. She moved to North Port in 1962 and resumed teaching at Englewood Elementary School in Englewood, Fla. She was a founding member of Trinity United Methodist Church in North Port. She graduated from Indiana University School of Nursing and was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, National Retired Teachers Association and Emeritus Club of University of Indiana.

Survivors include her son, William N. (Tammy) White of Springfield, Va.; four grandchildren, Mae Yeng Boatright, Richard Lee White, Robert Lee White and Elizabeth Ann White; and four great-grandchildren, Hannah Marie White, Carson Alexander White, Lauren Grace White and Jessie Boatright.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 4, at Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield, Ind. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 4, at Maple Hill Cemetery, Plainfield.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Mary White to Trinity United Methodist Church, 4285 Wesley Lane, North Port, FL 34287. Farley Funeral Home, North Port Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Anne Brustlin

Anne Brustlin of Englewood, Fla. passed away Sept. 29, 2002, at her Sarasota County residence. Cremation arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Englewood Chapel.

Michael O. Elmore

Michael O. Elmore, 59, of Englewood (Sarsota County), Fla., died Sept. 30, 2002. Lemon Bay Funeral Homes, Englewood Chapel, is in charge of cremation arrangements.

Doran E. Grant

Doran E. Grant, 74, of Sangerville, Maine, passed away Sept. 28, 2002 in Port Charlotte, Fla. Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services.

Margery K. Saunders

Margery K. Saunders, 78, of Bonita Springs, Fla., passed away Sept. 28, 2002. Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services.

Theodore V. Kowaleski

Theodore V. Kowaleski of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sept. 13, 2002, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte.

He attended St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte. Mr. Kowaleski was a former resident of Pittsburgh, Pa., where he worked as a bridge painter. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942, serving during World War lI. Following the war, Ted was a shore patrolman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; parents, Casimir and Victoria; and numerous siblings. Ted is survived by his sister, Rose Moceika, numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 5, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Interment of cremains will immediately follow in the St. Charles Memorial Garden.

Stella M. Ruhe

Stella M. Ruhe, 79, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Oct. 2, 2002, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Port Charlotte, after a long illness.

She was born icon in Newcastle, County Down, Ireland, and lived in Port Charlotte for 18 years. She was a homemaker. Stella was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Punta Gorda, Senior Friends volunteer organization, and the Irish-American Club.

Mrs. Ruhe is survived by her husband, Richard E. Ruhe Sr.; a son, Richard (Catherine) Ruhe of Escondido, Calif.; daughters, Susan (Charles) Drexler of Escondido, Nancy (James) Gesuelle of East Granby, Conn., Mary (Timothy) Leonard and Joy (Paul) Froeschle of Port Charlotte; a sister, Katherine Barker of Manorville, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A Mass of Christian Burial and private graveside service will be held Oct. 5 at St. Charles Cemetery in Lindenhurst, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Mrs. Ruhe to the Cornelia de Lange Syndrome Foundation, 302 W. Main St., No. 100, Avon, CT 06001.

Pearl A. Tait

Pearl A. Tait, 83, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Oct. 2, 2002, at Charlotte Harbor Healthcare of Port Charlotte.

She was born icon Sept. 30, 1919, in Old Town, Maine, and moved to Port Charlotte 12 years ago from Cape Elizabeth, Maine. She was a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church in Port Charlotte.

She is survived by two daughters, Carol A. (Ron) Whitney of Port Charlotte and Catherine Dupuis-Tait of Bath, Maine; two sons, Terry J. (Cathy) Tait of Windham, Maine, and Peter M. Tait of Embden, Maine; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 5, with a funeral service at 2 p.m., at Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel. The Rev. Robert B. Mattingly of St. Maximilian Kolbe Church will officiate. Private graveside services and interment will be held at later date in Arlington Cemetery, Windham. Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Jack Weisberg

Jack Weisberg, 85, of Port Charlotte, Fla., went to sleep Oct. 2, 2002, to await the resurrection morning.

He was born icon Sept. 16, 1917, to Benny and Sadie Weisberg. Mr. Weisberg served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a 1st lieutenant during World War II. He was a devoted member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and served as a hospital administrator with the Seventh-day Adventist Health System in Palatka, Orlando and Punta Gorda, Fla.

A son, Douglas, preceded him in death in February 1994. Surviving are his wife, Ruth; daughter, Martha Tyndal of West Palm, Fla., John Weisberg of Deland, Fla., and James Weisberg of Port Charlotte; a brother, Samuel Weisberg of Lowell, Mass.; a sister, May Stonner of Manchester, N.H.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate Jack's life will be at 3 p.m. Oct. 6, at the Seventh-day Adventist church on 2036 Loveland Boulevard, Port Charlotte. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 5, in the Port Charlotte Chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, 2405 Harbor Blvd.

John S. McLaughlin

John Sheffield "Shef" McLaughlin, 74, of Englewood, Fla., died Oct. 3, 2002.

He was born icon Jan. 3, 1928, in Detroit, Mich. His family moved to Lansing, Mich., where he received his primary education. After graduation he enlisted in the Army, where he was assigned to the 30th Weather Squadron in the South Pacific Theater. Upon his return from the service he attended Michigan State University, where he graduated in 1951. He spent 43 years in the automobile business, the first 18 with the Oldsmobile Division and the last 25 as general manager of a Pittsburgh Oldsmobile dealership. He was an Elk for more than 40 years with Lodge 1 in Pittsburgh, Pa. He was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church. He married Beverly Bassitt of Muskegon, Mich., in 1949

John is survived by his wife, Beverly; four children, Meagan (Matthew) Berube of Millbrae, Calif., John S. (Linda) McLaughlin II of Carnegie, Pa.; Colleen McLaughlin of Pittsburgh and Kelly (Charles) Mazurek of Libertyville, Ill.; and grandchildren, Anthony, Haley and Connor, all of Carnegie, Carly and Chelsea of Pittsburgh, and Madeline, Evan and Grace, all of Libertyville.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 4, at Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Oct. 5, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church. Private interment will be in St. Raphael's Memorials Garden.

Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association of Gulfcoast Florida, 2201 Cantu Court, Sarasota, FL 34232.

Glenna H. Murray

Glenna H. Murray, 88, of Englewood, Fla., died July 7, 2002.

A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 9, in the chapel at Englewood United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238; or Englewood United Methodist Church.

Reo G. Croll

Mrs. Reo G. Croll, 82 of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Adrian, Mich., passed away October 2, 2002, at Westminster Asbury Manor Healthcare Center in Bradenton.

Mrs. Croll was born icon Nov. 23, 1919, in Adrian to Mr. and Mrs. Floyd and Lucille Suydam. She was the owner and operator of Reo Gene's Beauty Shop in Adrian for several years and was a member of First Baptist Church of Adrian. Mrs. Croll was a winter resident of the Arcadia, Fla., area for many years before moving there permanently in 1984. She then moved to Bradenton in August 1998. While living in Arcadia, she served as a volunteer at DeSoto Memorial Hospital, Meals on Wheels and Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of Nocatee United Methodist Church, where she formerly served as the church treasurer.

She is survived by her son, John Croll of Bradenton; daughter, Linda Kluck of Minneapolis, Minn.; brother, Kenneth Suydam of Adrian; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 5, with a funeral service at 4:00 p.m., in the chapel of Shannon Funeral Home Town Chapel, 1015 14th St. W., Bradenton, with Chaplain Louis Branning officiating. Private family inurnment services will be held at the Joshua Creek Cemetery in Arcadia.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the American Lung Association, 3333 Clark Road, Sarasota, FL 34230, in her memory.

Benjamin Sanders

Benjamin Sanders, 88, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Sept. 28, 2002, at home. Arrangements are by Forest Lawn Cremation Inc. of Port Charlotte.

Edna M. Thomas

Edna Mae Thomas, 78, died Sept. 29, 2002. Funeral arrangements are by Hickson Funeral Home, Arcadia, Fla.

Dorothy M. Duncan

Dorothy M. Duncan, 82, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sept. 10, 2002.

She was born icon Nov. 6, 1919, in Camden, N.J., and moved to this area in 1989 from Haddonfield, N.J. Mrs. Duncan was a retired executive secretary for the following companies, Boeing Aircraft in Washington state, Salem Oregon School Board and Colt Manufacturing Co. in Camden. She was a member of Atco Presbyterian Church in Atco, N.J., and Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Port Charlotte.

Survivors include her husband, Wesley; daughter, Randi Kelly of Port Charlotte; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Penny Duncan.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 13, at the Pilgrim United Church of Christ.
