Ida M. Eubanks

Ida Mae Eubanks, 89, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Aug. 2, 2002.

Born Feb. 8, 1913, as one of eleven children in Vaiden, Miss., she moved to Florida in 1986 from Melrose Park, Ill. She retired from Boise Cascade in Addison, Ill., after 22 years. She was of the Baptist faith; loved to quilt and travel and was an avid gardener and soap opera fan.

She is survived by her daughters, Thelma Jenkins of Tennessee Ridge, Tenn., Mary Ann DeRossett and Linda Sue Ritter, both of Port Charlotte; sons, Jerry Eubanks of Belleview, Fla., and William D. Eubanks of Port Charlotte; sister, Audie Coleman of Cleveland, Miss., and brother, Glenn Mann of Lake Providence, La.; 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 8, at Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home in Port Charlotte.

Leonie E. Gilson

Leonie E. Gilson, 86, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Aug. 3, 2002, in Punta Gorda.

She was born icon May 30, 1916, in New York City, N.Y. Mrs. Gilson moved to Punta Gorda from White Plains, N.Y. in 1977.

Survivors include a son, John (Mirella) Gilson of Miami, Fla.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Aug. 7, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Donations may be made to Education Endowment Fund of Sacred Heart, 211 W. Charlotte Ave., Punta Gorda, FL 33950; American Cancer Society, 22107 Elmira Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33952; or Pregnancy Crisis Care Line of Port Charlotte, P.O. Ian D. Hals

Ian D. Hals, 59, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Aug. 4, 2002, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte.

Mr. Hals was born icon June 6, 1943, in Patterson, N.J. He moved to Port Charlotte from Hawthorne, N.J., in 1984. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a Vietnam veteran.

He leaves behind his wife, Catherine Hals of Port Charlotte; three children, Dawn Fawkner of Deposit, N.Y., Ian Hals Jr. and Jacqueline Mendiz, both of Haledon, N.J.; three stepchildren, Kimberly Stoll of Port Charlotte, Christina Stoll of Port Charlotte and Scott Stoll of Hawthorne; seven grandchildren; a sister, Beryl Fox of Port Charlotte; and a nephew, Scott Fox of Columbia, Md.

A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Aug. 7, at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home in Punta Gorda, Fla.

George L. Kelley

George L. Kelley, 81, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away July 23, 2002, in Punta Gorda.

Mr. Kelley was born icon Jan. 1, 1921, in Boston, Mass. He graduated from Boston College. Mr. Kelley served in the U.S. Army for 30 years, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel and retiring in 1969. Upon retiring, he returned to Revere, Mass. He relocated to Punta Gorda in 1970. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include his sister, Rita Jones of Marblehead, Mass.; and a cousin, Frances Donovan of Mattapan, Mass. His wife, Ursula C. Kelley, preceded him in death.

A graveside service with full military honors will be at 1 p.m. Aug. 7, at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Funeral arrangements are by Kays-Ponger Funeral Home, Port Charlotte, Fla.

Iris B. Nessel

Iris Beatrice Nessel, 94, passed away at her home July 30, 2002.

She was born icon June 6, 1908, in Greenfield, Ind., a daughter of Cora Ellen (Horton) and George Andrew Scott. Iris married Harold Alanson Nessel Sr. on Oct. 13, 1932, in Chicago, Ill., and was active and supportive as a wife of a Methodist minister for 53 years. Mrs. Nessel dedicated her life to God and church, her husband and her family. She had lived in Canada Creek Ranch, Atlanta, Mich., for the past 50 years, formerly of Bay City, Mich., spending her winters in Punta Gorda, Fla. She was a member of Onaway United Methodist Church, Onaway, Mich., as well as Cleveland United Methodist in Punta Gorda. She loved the piano, especially playing in church, and for the elderly and shut-ins at convalescent homes. She devoted a lot of her time to assisting and caring for the elderly and homebound.

Iris is survived by her daughters, Patricia (Gary) Edwards of Jacksonville, Fla., and Pamela (Ted) Arens of Orchard Lake, Mich.; son, Harold Alanson (Sally) Nessel Jr. of Lansing, Mich.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; sisters, Kathryn Songer, Freda Dalton, Eva Louis Brown and Irene Fisher; and a brother, Fred Emerson Scott.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Aug. 17, at Onaway United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Peter Bartlett officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to Onaway United Methodist Church, 3647 N. Lynn St., Onaway, MI 49765; or to Cleveland United Methodist Church, Punta Gorda, FL 33982. Arrangements are by Green Funeral Home, Atlanta, Mich.

Margaret J. Awad

Margaret Josephine Awad, 79, of North Port, Fla., died Aug. 4, 2002.

She was born icon on July 2, 1923, in Cambridge, Mass. She moved to this area 12 years ago from Norwood, Mass. Margaret attended San Pedro Catholic Church. She was a retired member of ILGWU Boston Local 033.

Margaret is survived by her daughter, Carmelle Awad of North Port; a sister, Mary Arwashan of Damascus, Syria; a brother, John Arwashan of Norwood; three grandchildren, Margaret M. (Samir) Kiami of Dover, Mass., Mary Rose Cochrane of Sarasota, Fla., Frank (Danielle) Cochrane of Boston, Mass.; and four great-grandchildren, Michael Kiami, Kristina Kiami, Jessica Kiami and Amanda Kiami, all of Dover.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 7, at Farley Funeral Home, North Port Chapel. A funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Aug. 8, at San Pedro Catholic Church. Burial will be in Massachusetts.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, South County Unit, 2100 S. Tamiami Trail, Ste. A, Venice, FL 34293; or to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Donald J. Love

Donald J. Love, 72, of Arcadia, Fla., died Aug. 2, 2002, at his residence in Arcadia.

He was born icon June 20, 1930, in Detroit, Mich. Mr. Love retired from Conrail Railroad after 30 years as a conductor. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in Korea. He was a member of AMVETS Post 60 in Arcadia.

He is survived by his fianceé and care giver, his love, Marie Vancil Yax of Arcadia; two sons, Robert (Rita) Love and Donald (Jennifer) Love; two daughters, Gayle (Dale) Warford and Valerie (John) Matthewson; a sister, June MacMurray; two nieces, Debbie and Patti; two nephews, Mark and Greg; and 10 grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Florence, in 1987; and a grandson, Michael Warford, in 1994.

Visitation and funeral services were Aug. 5 at Robarts Funeral Home Inc., Arcadia Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Waters of Mount Ephraim Baptist Church officiating. military honors were performed by DeSoto County Honor Guard. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, East Tawas, Mich.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Mount Ephraim Baptist Church, 2865 S.W. County Road 661, Arcadia, FL 34266.

Doris J. Raley

Doris Jean Raley, nee Wigh, 73, died at home in her sleep, Aug. 3, 2002.

Doris was originally form Dayton, Ohio, and had lived in DeSoto County since 1995. She was a loving mother and homemaker. She was employed for many years by the Dayton Police Department and retired from Mont Co. purchasing department.

She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Frank; three sons, Gary of Brighton, Colo., George of Kenosha, Wis., and Kevin of Fredricktown, Mo.; a daughter, Victoria Gacke of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a sister, Charlotte Beetz of Punta Gorda, Fla.

There will be no viewing or funeral service locally. A memorial service for family and friends will be held in Columbus on Labor Day weekend.

Robert G. Hewson

Robert George Hewson, 74, of Milford, Mass., died Aug. 1, 2002, in Port Charlotte, Fla. Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Jane Gates

Jane Muus Gates, 79, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away June 24, 2002, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Fla.

Jane was born icon May 20, 1923, in Southington, Conn., where she graduated from Lewis High School. She earned her bachelor's degree in education (home economics) from the University of Connecticut. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and the Charlotte Bay Chapter of National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Following graduation, she taught school for 20 years, both in Connecticut and New Jersey. She had been a Florida resident for 21 years, moving here from East Norwalk, Conn., where she was a member of Shoreline Golf Club. Her summer home was in Ocean City, N.J., where she was a member of Seaview Golf Club. Here in Florida, she was a charter member of Burnt Store Country Club. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Punta Gorda.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Leland Gates of Punta Gorda; a son, Clay (Cathy) Gates of Punta Gorda; two daughters, Martha (Donald) Lord of Fairfield, Conn., and Patricia (Steven) Fabrizio of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; and nine grandchildren, Cassandra and Clay Gates, Dory and Wesley Lord, Michael and Cross Fabrizio, Lisa Aronson, Jessie Lord and Travis Millard.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. June 28, at First United Methodist Church of Punta Gorda. Friends are invited to the Gates home following the services.

Donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 23038 Cleveland Ave., Punta Gorda, FL; or to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238. Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Andre J. Jean-Pierre

Andre Jean-Baptiste Jean-Pierre, 66, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died June 20, 2002, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born icon July 7, 1935, in Cape Haitian, Haiti, and came to this area 11 years ago from Brooklyn, N.Y. Mr. Jean-Pierre worked as a bus driver for the Charlotte County Board of Education and was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Suzie Jean-Pierre of Punta Gorda; daughter, Dana Jean-Pierre of Port Charlotte; sons, Clark, Fritz and Patrick Jean-Pierre, all of Queens, N.Y., and Adler and David Jean-Pierre, both of Port Charlotte; mother, Anna Jean-Pierre of Port Charlotte; brother, Brice Jean-Pierre of Port Charlotte; sister, Marie R. Jean-Pierre of Port Charlotte; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 28, at Paul Schelm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte, with a wake service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. June 29, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Port Charlotte. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by Paul Schelm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.

Gladys Turner

Gladys Turner, 84, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died June 23, 2002.

Mrs. Turner moved to Port Charlotte in 1984 from Silver Springs, Md. She was a homemaker and was the pianist for 10 years at Punta Gorda Seventh Day Adventist Church, before failing health required her to retire. Mrs. Turner was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and was very active in community service within the church. She was a compassionate, generous woman who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Robert Turner of Port Charlotte; three daughters, Marilyn Christy of Woodbridge, Va., Donna Lacy of Port Charlotte and Patti Ward of Portland, Ore.; three stepchildren, Robert Turner of Oklahoma City, Okla., John Turner of Laurel, Md., and Terry Ehrhardt of Berkley Springs, W.Va.; a sister, Fern McClure of Silver Springs; 10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be at 1 p.m. June 30, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1655 Taylor Road, Punta Gorda.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the church. Donations will be used toward the outreach ministry of 3-ABN Television. Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.

David A. White

David A. White, 78, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died June 25, 2002, at Mariner

Health of Port Charlotte.

He was born icon May 31, 1924, in Albany, N.Y., and came to this area 35 years ago from Scotia, N.Y. Mr. White worked as an engineer for a power plant. He was a volunteer with the fire department in East Glenville, N.Y., and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his son, David A. White Jr. of Port Charlotte; daughter, Deborah Kinder of Port Charlotte; brothers, Kenneth and Paul White, both of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held in New York. Burial will be at East Greenbush

Cemetery Association, Rensselaer County, N.Y. Arrangements are by Paul Schelm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte.

Richard J. Krizka

Richard J. Krizka, 55, of Wartburg, Tenn., formerly of Arcadia, Fla., died May 27, 2002, in Wartburg.

Mr. Krizka was born icon Dec. 6, 1946, in Scherrding, Austria. He was a retired firefighter from the Chicago (Ill.) Fire Department, a member of VFW, American Legion, Firefighters Benevolent Association and Ducks Unlimited. He was of the Catholic faith. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to listen to and play bluegrass music.

Survivors include two brothers, Tom Krizka and Eric Krizka, both of Arcadia; a sister, Nancy Trejo of Blue Island, Ill.; eight stepbrothers, Robert Johnson, Bill Johnson, David Johnson, John Johnson, Terry Johnson, Robin Johnson and Elmer Johnson, all of Arcadia, and Donald Johnson of Danville, Ala.; and two stepsisters, Marline Williams of Casper, Wyo., and Lucile Dalton of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. June 29, at the chapel of Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia. Interment will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Arcadia. Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, Arcadia, is in charge of arrangements.

Rosaire Marois

Rosaire Marois, 76, passed away June 23, 2002, in Arcadia, Fla.

He was born icon July 25, 1925, in Cap de La Madeleine, Canada. He was a welder for a pipefitting company.

He is survived by his children, Diane (husband, Jean Pierre), Sylvie, Raymond, Carmen (husband, Luc); and grandchildren, Liliane, Martin, Melissa, Marjjollaine, Stephane, Simon, Helene and Chantal.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 27, and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 28, at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. June 29, at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel in Joliet, Ill., with the Rev. James Schwab presiding. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Joliet. Robarts Funeral Home, Arcadia, is in charge of local arrangements.

Melba Gregoire

Melba Wasson Gregoire, 87, of Delray Beach, Fla. and formerly of Venice, Fla., died June 23, 2002.

She was born icon in Starusberg, Pa., and spent most of her adult life in Pittsfield, Mass., and Venice. Melba was a resident of Abbey Delray South in Delray Beach for the past five years of her life. Melba will always be remembered as someone who enjoyed her life to the fullest.

Melba was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles W. Wasson Sr.,

and husband, Steven Gregoire. She is survived by a daughter, Linda McCauley of Boynton Beach, Fla.; a son, Charles W. Wasson Jr. of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother, Jocob Kohl of Springfield, Mass.; four grandchildren, Robin, Colleen, Bryan and Brandon; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be at 4:30 p.m. June 30, at Abby Delray South.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Abby Delray South Entertainment Fund, c/o Barbara Provan, 1717 Homewood Blvd., Delray Beach, FL 33445; or to Hospice By the Sea Inc., 1531 W. Palmetto Park Road, Boca Raton, FL 33486.

Frank E. Summers

Frank E. Summers, 84, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died June 24, 2002, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte. Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Clarence E. Anderson

Clarence Edward Anderson, 87, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died July 11, 2002, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Port Charlotte.

Born Feb. 2, 1915, in Colver, Pa., Mr. Anderson moved to Port Charlotte in 1978 from Buffalo, N.Y. He was a pipe fitter with Western Electric in Buffalo. He attended St. James Episcopal Church and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and Charlotte Players, all in Port Charlotte.

Survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Violet; son, Jay Anderson of Buffalo; stepdaughters, Sharon Allen of Texas and Lynette Woomer of Buffalo; stepson, James Coles of Buffalo; sisters, Elizabeth Harris of Buffalo and Glenda Strachan of Arizona; brother, Wayne Anderson of Hastings, Pa.; two granddaughters and three step-grandchildren.

There will be a private memorial service with inurnment at St. James Episcopal Church in Port Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 1365 Viscaya Drive, Port Charlotte, FL 33953. Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel.
