George A. Cavano
George A. Cavano, 78, of Charlotte Harbor, Fla., passed away July 10, 2002 at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.
He was born
in Grand Rapids, Mich., and moved to Charlotte Harbor in 1954. Mr. Cavano was a Marine veteran serving in World War II in the South Pacific. He was a member of Port Charlotte VFW Post 110, Punta Gorda Masonic Lodge 115, and Marine Corps League of Port Charlotte. He retired in 1979 after 30 years with Florida Power & Light. Mr. Cavano is also a member of Anglican Church of St. Paul, Port Charlotte.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty Cavano; a son, George R. Cavano of Port Charlotte; a daughter, Kerry Oliver of Overland, Kan.; a brother, Arthur (Janet) Cavano of Fayetteville, N.C.; two grandchildren, Lindsey and Brian Oliver.
Services will be at 10 a.m. July 13, at Anglican Church of St. Paul, Port Charlotte. Burial at Restlawn Memorial Gardens will follow services.

Marvin N. Geldersma
Marvin Neil Geldersma, 78, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died July 10, 2002.
Mr. Geldersma served his country in the United States Marine Corps as a master sergeant. He was the owner of Geldersma Electrical Sales in Grand Rapids, Mich., for 25 years and had resided here since 1986. Mr. Geldersma served as a holiday bell ringer for the Salvation Army.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Ruth R. Geldersma; two daughters, Barbara J. Geldersma of Springdale, Utah, and Nancy L. Wood of Grand Rapids; a special daughter, Linda L. Battle; a sister, Joyce Van Popering of Lawrenceville, Ga.; four grandchildren, Christine Wood, Stewart Neil Geldersma, Steven James Geldersma and Aaron Wood; and a great-grandson, Zachery Neil Geldersma. A son, Robert Neil Geldersma, and an infant child preceded him in death.
A celebration of life will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 14, in the Can-Am Building at Maple Leaf Estates. Graveside service and inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 2, at Fairplains Cemetery in Grand Rapids.

James T. Harvey
James T. Harvey, 64, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died July 10, 2002, at his residence.
He was born
Feb. 6, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pa., and moved to Punta Gorda from Doylestown, Pa., four years ago. He was retired senior account executive for Marion Labs of Kansas City, Mo., in the pharmaceutical sales industry. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Punta Gorda, Knights of Columbus, Isles Yacht Club, Charlotte County Republican Club, Punta Gorda Kiwanis Club, and the Punta Gorda Civic Association.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen Harvey of Punta Gorda; a daughter, Evelyn N. Harvey of Punta Gorda; two sons, Patrick J. Harvey of Upper Darby, Pa., and Kevin P. Harvey of Boca Raton, Fla.; two grandchildren, Brierly and Lauren Harvey of Boca Raton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 2 p.m., July 13, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Further services and interment will be held in Pennsylvania.

Morris W. McMillan
Morris William McMillan, 83, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died July 10, 2002, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda, Fla.
He was born
July 6, 1919, in Beaver Dam, Wis., and came to this area 23 years ago from Fort Myers Beach, Fla. Mr. McMillan was a commercial fisherman. He was a member of VFW Post 5690; American Legion Post 110, Port Charlotte; American Legion Post 274, Fort Myers Beach; and Florida Peace River Chapter of Ex-POWs. He served in the U.S. Army in the Battle of the Philippine Islands, Lipa, Cabanatuan and Corregidor, and was a member of the U.S. Cavalry. He was decorated with the Distinguished Unit Badge (two Oak Leaf Clusters), the American Defense Ribbon (a Bronze Star), the Philippine Defense Ribbon (a Bronze Star), an Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and a World War II Victory Medal. Mr. McMillan was in the Bataan Death March and was a POW in camps in Japan, Osaka and Akenobe. He was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include his daughters, Deborah Anne McMillan and Jean Michele McMillan, both of Port Charlotte; brother, James Vincent (Dorothy) McMillan of Beaver Dam; sisters-in-law, Junetta (David) Robinson and Vera (David) Taylor, both of Fort Myers, Fla.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 12, at Paul Schelm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. at the funeral home, with deacon Michael DiMeglio officiating. Burial will be at Indian Springs Cemetery, Punta Gorda.

Hazel G. Montgomery
Hazel Gertrude Montgomery, 82, of Englewood (Sarasota County), Fla., died July 10, 2002, at Venice Hospice House in Venice, Fla.
Born Feb. 19, 1920, to Wellington and Sarah (Florence) D'Arcy, she had been a resident of Englewood since her retirement in 1980 from the Patience-Montgomery Funeral Home in Jackson, Mich., after serving 40 years as its secretary/treasurer. She was a member of St. David Episcopal Church in Englewood; a member and past president of the Jackson Women's Club; and the Venice Art League, where she was an active sculpture artist.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward, and grandson, Edward. Surviving are two sons, John E. Montgomery of Surprise, Ariz., and Robert C. Montgomery of Jackson; a granddaughter, Mary Ann Ross of Jackson; and two great-granddaughters, Ashley and Colleen Ross, both of Jackson.
Visitation will be from noon until service time at 1 p.m. July 12, at Englewood Community Funeral Home, 3070 S. McCall Road, with the Rev. Arthur Lee of St. David Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will be July 15 at Woodland Cemetery in Jackson.

Charlie C. Mann
Mr. Charlie Clayton Mann, 42, of Bradenton, Fla., died July 6, 2002, at his residence.
Charlie was born
in Arcadia, Fla., and was a lifetime resident of Manatee County. He was a retired master sergeant of the U.S. Air Force and a member of Bethany Baptist Church. He was also a member and Past Master of Rantoul Masonic Lodge No. 470 F&AM, Rantoul, Ill.; life member of National Rifle Association; and life member of National Skeet Association.
He is survived by his wife, Paula; a daughter, Barbara M. Mann of Bradenton; a son, Charles A. Mann of Shreveport, La.; two sisters, Paula L. Lowrimore of Palmetto, Fla., and Nancy M. Mann of Myakka City, Fla.; a brother, Duane E. Mann of Arcadia; and his parents, Virgil and Roberta Mann of Myakka City.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. July 13, at Bethany Baptist Church, 26604 State Road 64 E., with Masonic services by Manatee Masonic Lodge No. 31 F&AM, and military honors by MacDill Air Force Base. The Rev. Denney B. Davis will officiate.

Irving D. Ross Sr.
Irving D. Ross Sr., 78, died June 2, 2002.
He was born
on Dec. 12, 1923, in New Haven, Conn., to George A. and Mary Botting Ross; the fifth in a family of seven children consisting of five boys and two girls. He attended public schools in New Haven and graduated from Commercial High School in 1941. In his early years he regularly attended St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and was active in their youth programs. He was also active in city athletic programs, having played citywide football with the Newhallville Juniors and ice hockey for Commercial High School. Following graduation from high school, Irving went to work for O.F. Mossberg & Son to help with the war effort. With World War II in progress, Irving entered active military service on Jan. 20, 1943, and served in the U.S. Army. He took basic training at Camp Tyson, Tenn., and advanced training at Camp Edwards, Mass. He was assigned to an automatic weapons battalion and rose to the rank of platoon sergeant. He served with his battalion on the island of Saipan and elsewhere in the Western Pacific. Irving received an honorable discharge from the military on May 20, 1947. While in the Army and before leaving for overseas duty, Irving married Elizabeth Campbell Carr, whom he had courted for several years. From this union came two sons, Irving D. Ross Jr. and Douglas John Ross; and from their successive marriages came five grandchildren. On his return to civilian life, Irving began his plumbing and heating career working with his father. He worked with him for six years and with other plumbing and heating contractors until 1960. At that time he was appointed plumbing and heating inspector for the town of Hamden. He held that position for 16 years before returning to private contracting work. While working for the town of Hamden, Irving founded and was first president of the Connecticut Chapter of the American Society of Sanitary Engineers. In addition, he was co-founder, president and secretary of the Connecticut Plumbing and Heating Inspector's Association. For his high level of expertise in the plumbing and heating fields and in recognition of his work with the State Building Inspector and the State Building Code Standards Committee, Irving was issued Certificate No. 1, the first certificate for Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning Inspector on Nov. 26, 1974, which he proudly retained. In addition to other responsibilities, he taught evening classes at Eli Whitney Technical School for four years. Irving petitioned Day Spring Lodge No. 30 for membership and was raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason on June 15, 1960. He has been deeply involved in all activities relating to his lodge during his Masonic career, culminating in being one of the prime movers in the completion of Day Spring's new temple. He had the honor of being Worshipful Master of the lodge when the temple was dedicated in 1984. Irving was Worthy Patron of Alice Chapter No. 76, Order of Eastern Star three times and traveled extensively with his wife, Betty, when she was Worthy Matron and when she held the Station of Ruth in the Grand Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. Irving had also been active in the youth programs in the town over a span of many years. These included Hamden Pee Wee Baseball Association, the Youth hockey League and serving as Cub Scout Master.
Services for Mr. Ross will be announced at a later date. Local arrangements are under the direction of Kays-Ponger Royal Palm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel.
Charlotte N. Schroeder
Charlotte N. Schroeder, 75, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away June 2, 2002.
She was born
in Minneapolis, Minn. Mrs. Schroeder served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. She is formerly of Robbinsdale, Minn., where she worked as a telephone representative for North Western Telephone, before retiring in 1983 and moving to Port Charlotte in 1986. She is a member of Telephone Pioneers of America, and American Legion Post 110 of Port Charlotte. Mrs. Schroeder was of the Lutheran faith.
Survivors include her husband, John Schroeder of Port Charlotte; and a brother-in-law, Bruce Schroeder of Lake Park, Fla.

Charles M. Wilburn
Charles M. "Chuck" Wilburn, 55, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died June 2, 2002.
He was born
April 9, 1947, in Kelso, Tenn., and moved to this area 40 years ago.
Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Linda L. Wilburn; three children, Lisa E. Wilburn, Timothy C. (Lynda) Wilburn and Jason R. Wilburn, all of Punta Gorda; three sisters, Ethel Jones of Punta Gorda, Faye and Elmira, both of Tennessee.
A memorial service will celebrate Mr. Wilburn's life at 3 p.m. June 5, in the Punta Gorda Chapel of the Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Homes.

Manuel C. Gregory
Manuel C. Gregory, 55, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died June 3, 2002, at Englewood Community Hospital in Englewood, Fla.
Born Feb. 12, 1947, in New Bedford, Mass., to Michael and Dorothy (Morrell) Gregory, he had been a resident of the Port Charlotte/Englewood area for 10 years, coming from Freetown, Mass. Mr. Gregory was the owner-operator of Southern Pride Lawn Service. He Served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, and was a member of VFW and American Legion posts. He was a Christian.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Maryann F. Gregory; a daughter, Linda (Dana) Plant; two sons, Manuel Gregory and Frank (Gwen) Gregory, all of Port Charlotte; two sisters, Jo-Ann Trombley and Mary Kennison, both of New Bedford, Mass.; five brothers, Everett Vital of Lexington, Ky., Frank Gregory and John Mello, both of East Freetown, Mass., Ernest Mello of Acushnet, Mass., and Richard Mello of North Dartmouth, Mass.; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 6, at Englewood Community Funeral Home, 3070 S. McCall Road. A service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. with Pastor Michael Lindsey of West Charlotte Baptist Church officiating.
Almeda Wayne
Almeda Wayne, 86, of Englewood, Fla., died May 31, 2002, at her Charlotte County residence.
Born Oct. 2, 1915, in Moundsville, W.Va., to John and Pearl (Lucas) Moore, she had been a resident of Englewood for 29 years, coming form Barnesville, Ohio. Mrs. Wayne taught in the Moundsville school district and retired in 1973 from the Barnesville school district in Ohio after 30 years of teaching. She was a member of Englewood United Methodist Church, Lemon Bay Women's Club, Senior Friends, and F.I.S.H., all of Englewood.
Survivors include her daughter, Alayne Wayne Weber of Holgate, Ohio; two grandchildren, Christopher Weber of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Stacy Weber of Findlay, Ohio; and sisters-in-law, Naomi Chapman of Englewood and Marilynn Troutman of Lexington, Ky. She was predeceased by her husband, J. Harold Wayne, in 1991.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. June 8, at Englewood United Methodist Church, Doan Chapel.

Raymond Brannon, 63, of Arcadia, Fla., died May 6, 2002, at DeSoto Memorial Hospital, Arcadia.
He was born
Jan. 5, 1939, in Lawrence County, Tenn. He came to Arcadia in 1993 from College Grove, Tenn. He was of the Protestant faith. Raymond was a retired handyman.
He is survived by three daughters, Lorna and Candy, both of Florida, and Terri Allen of Tennessee; four brothers, Edward A. Brannon of Eagleville, Tenn., Frank Brannon and Jimmy Brannon, both of Rockville, Tenn., and Charles Brannon of Florida; a sister, Betty Rapier of Rockville; and several grandchildren.

Margaret B. Hill
Margaret B. Hill, 82, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died April 7, 2002.
Margaret moved to Punta Gorda in 1949, with her husband, George M. Hill, now deceased, and 2-1/2 year old son, Paul George Hill. During her life she bore another son, James F. Hill. Mrs. Hill was a devoted Catholic and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she served as secretary and bookkeeper for 37 years. She helped form CCD classes for the children of Sacred Heart and was the first president of the Guild of Our Lady. Margaret was a beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Surviving are her sons, Paul George Hill and James F. (Sheree) Hill; a sister, Cecelia Faro; four granddaughters, Tammy (Joe) Hill-Golden, Sabrina Hill, Candice Margaret (Darin) Hall and Kimberly Azzolina; and great-grandchildren, Justine Margaret Hall, Drayton Hall, Kassandra Azzolina and R.J. Powers.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. April 11 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. April 10 in the Punta Gorda Chapel of the Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home. A Scripture service will be celebrated at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. She will be dearly missed, but most of all, continually loved.
Nancy Harriet Miller Hoskins
Nancy Harriet Miller Hoskins, 73, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away April 6, 2002.
She was born
Jan. 13, 1929, in Hagen, Ga., to the late Benford and Beulah (Hodges) Miller. She was a devoted wife to Mattison, with whom she traveled the world during his Naval career. During those years, Nancy and Mattison became the parents of four children. Nancy devoted much of her time to volunteer work in various hospitals in the United States and in Tokyo, Japan. After her husband retired from the Navy, they moved to Mt. Vernon, Ky., where she returned to school and became an accredited records technician. She worked for Rockcastle County Hospital as director of medical records for 10 years. By 1983, both Nancy and Mattison had retired and began traveling again.
Nancy will be greatly missed by her husband of 54 years, Mattison; children, Michael Hoskins, Stanley Hoskins, Brian Hoskins and Karen Hoskins Collins; and six grandchildren, Tommy Hoskins, Jessica Hoskins Redpath, Anthony Hoskins, Drew Hoskins, Beth Collins and John Rudd.
The family will receive friends 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. April 10 at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services. The service in celebration of Nancy's life will follow at 2 p.m., with the Rev. John Bryant officiating.

Martin J. Jurkovich
Martin J. Jurkovich, 77, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away April 6, 2002. He was born
March 28, 1925, in Milwaukee, Wis., to the late Martin M. and Emma (VanScura) Jurkovich. He came to this area in 1987 from Milwaukee. Martin served his country with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European Theater during World War II. He retired after 30 years with Allis-Chalmers. He was of the Catholic faith. Martin had a passion for horse racing, especially the Kentucky Derby, and also for jazz music, but most of all he loved and missed his wife, Margaret, who preceded him in death.
Martin leaves behind his brother, John Jurkovich of Milwaukee, and nieces, Margaret Grayson and Barbara Cleland.
The family will receive friends 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. April 11 at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services. The service in celebration of Martin's life will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will take place at Royal Palm Cemetery. The family requests memorial donations be made to the St. Jude's Society.
