Lorraine L. Shumway
Lorraine L. Shumway, 79, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002. Born May 6, 1922, in Biddeford, Maine, she moved to our area in 1979 from Burlington, Vt.
She was a homemaker and a member of Sweet Adelines for many years. She was a WAC in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Englewood.
She is survived by her husband, William J. Shumway; a daughter, Joyce Shumway of Englewood; two sons, William J. Shumway II of Venice, Fla., and James Shumway of Burlington, Vt.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Englewood at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2002.

Alfred E. Young, 81, of Worthington, Minn., died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital, Port Charlotte, Fla. ICS Cremation Society Inc. of Harbour Heights, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. T. Walter Carlin
Dr. T. Walter Carlin, 70, of Sarasota, Fla., who spent 11 years serving Port Charlotte, Fla., as founder and president of the Hearing and Balance Center at InterMedic Health Clinic, died March 18, 2002.
Carlin, a former professor and health care administrator, was was born
Feb. 25, 1932, in Mount Vernon, N.Y. He graduated from Ithaca College in upstate New York and received his diploma and Ph.D. from Victoria University, Manchester, England. After working in public schools in Rye, N.Y., Carlin became a professor at his Alma Mater, Ithaca College. While there, he established the Ewing Clinic and took deaf awareness to the streets by starting the first mobile audiology unit, treating children and senior citizens whose hearing problems might have otherwise gone undiagnosed and untreated. He spent nearly every summer helping lead a camp for disabled children. Dr. Carlin also headed a deaf education program at a training college in Ghana, West Africa. In demand as a speech and hearing expert, he consulted in Europe, the Middle East and Central America, and served on a United Nations task force. In 1978, he was named Director of the Speech and Hearing Institute at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas. In 1988, he moved to Sarasota and, in 1990, founded the Hearing and Balance Center in Port Charlotte. One focus of his work there was helping patients overcome difficulties keeping their balance. Dr. Carlin died of complications related to a heart condition.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Jenefer; a brother, William J. of New York City; a son, David of San Diego, Calif.; daughters, Mary of Sarasota and Anne Spindel of Mexico City, Mexico; and a grandchild, Ava.

Sarah A. Lee
Sarah Ann Lee, 55, of Miami, Fla., died March 18, 2002, at Cedars Medical Center in Miami.
Born March 29, 1946, in Punta Gorda, Fla., Sarah left Punta Gorda after graduating from Dunbar High School, Fort Myers, to attend Florida Memorial College in Miami. There she earned a degree in education and resided in Miami teaching elementary grades in Dade County for 28 years, the last 20 years with Everglades Elementary School in Miami. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her son, Matthew Joseph Lee of Miami; mother, Sarah Wiley of Punta Gorda; sister, Joyce Goshay of Punta Gorda; two brothers, Roy Wiley of Punta Gorda and Dr. Bennie Wiley of Miramar, Fla.; five nieces; two nephews; and a host of cousins and friends. Preceding her in death was her father, Bennie Lee Wiley.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday, March 23, at St. Mary's Primitive Baptist Church, 605 Mary St., Punta Gorda. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., also at the church. Interment will follow at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens, Punta Gorda. Arrangements by Barrett-Frayar Funeral Home, Miami.
Michael J. Popovitch
Michael J. Popovitch, 63, of Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of Brick, N.J., died March 14 at his home in Port Charlotte.
He served as a New Jersey State Trooper and retired in 1993 as a lieutenant after a 31-year career. He continued serving the public as an investigator for the New Jersey State Department for two years. He served in the Air Force from 1957 to 1961. During his retirement, he became active in the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 66, the Retired Law Enforcement Officers Association, American Legion Post No. 110, Moose Lodge No. 2121, and the AMVETS of NJ/FL, all in Port Charlotte. A dedicated police officer and an excellent father, he was also an avid fisherman and cook and will be missed by all. Born in Dover, N.J., he was a 30-year resident of Brick Township before moving to Florida in 1997.
He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy Bennett Popovitch in 1993. He is survived by four sons, Louis Moglia of Virginia Beach, Va., Scott Moglia of Las Animas, Colo., Michael Popovitch Jr. of Spring Lake, N.J., and Leigh Popovitch of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Melissa Osmun of Neptune, N.J.; two brothers, James Popovitch of Schooleys Mountain, N.J., and Jack Popovitch of Dover; and his companion, Kay Nealey of Port Charlotte.
Relatives and friends are invited to call from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, Route 138, Wall Township, N.J. An American Legion Service will commence at 2:45 p.m., followed by a funeral service to be offered 3 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at the funeral home. Interment is private. Full military services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, at American Legion Post No. 110 in Port Charlotte.

Phyllis L. Simborg
Phyllis L. Simborg, 77, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died March 17, 2002.
She was born
Feb. 10, 1925, in Hammond, Ind., to the late Morris and Marie (Hess) Simborg. She came to this area in 1988 from Miami, Fla. She earned her degree at the University of Missouri Journalism School. She worked for many years as a copywriter in the advertising field, working in Texas and New York, and later owned her own ad agency and also worked in real estate while in Miami. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Punta Gorda, Seminole Lakes Country Club, and the Charlotte Players. She also volunteered with the Cancer Society and the Punta Gorda Library.
Phyllis will be greatly missed by her cousin, Bob Hess of Punta Gorda; and several other second and third cousins.
A service in celebration of Phyllis' life will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 22, at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services. The family requests memorial donations be made to First United Methodist Church Punta Gorda Building Fund. Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services.
Ruth Tobey
Ruth Tobey, 85, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away March 18, 2002.
Born Dec. 29, 1916, in Newberry, Mich., she moved to our area in 1978 from Northville, Mich. She retired as a medical secretary.
She is survived by her husband, Burton W. Tobey; daughters, Diane R. (Silo) Rodriguez of Dimondale, Mich., and Cheryl J. Kelly of Port Charlotte; sons, James B. (Susan) Tobey of West Islip, N.Y., Ronald D. (Mary Ann) Tobey of Garden City, Mich., and Charles D. (Suzanne) Tobey of Ortonville, Mich,; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at Freedom Bible Church of Port Charlotte.

Ernestine J. Hamric
Ernestine June Hamric, 76, of North Port, Fla., died on March 18, 2002.
She was born
July 9, 1925, in Clarksburg, W.Va. She moved to this area in 1982 from Columbus, Ohio. She was a beautician with the Chicago Beauty Shop in Morgantown, W.Va., retiring in 1951.
She is survived by her husband, George Hamric of North Port; a son, George Michael Hamric of North Port; a daughter, Joan Carol Hamric-Surgett of Columbus; three brothers, Andrew "Bud" Moore of Grafton, W.Va., Robert (Carol) Moore of Carrollton, W.Va., and Ray (Delores) Moore of Leesburg, W.Va.; a sister, Jean Marsh of Philippi, W.Va.; an aunt, Arlice Coffman of Philippi; many nieces and nephews and friends. She was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Lou Hamric; and a sister, Mary Jane Glass.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 22, at Farley Funeral Home, North Port Chapel, North Port. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Venice Memorial Gardens.
Ruth E. Wade
Ruth Eileen (McGovern) Wade, 83, of North Port, Fla., and Port Wade, Nova Scotia, died peacefully at her North Port home on March 19, 2002, and went home to be with God.
Ruth was born
on Aug. 4, 1918, the eldest daughter of James and Florence (Robertson) McGovern of Lynn, Mass. She was a graduate of Lynn English High School class of 1935. Ruth met Ken, newly arrived from Nova Scotia, while teaching Sunday School at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Lynn. They were married there June 14, 1942. Ruth worked at General Electric Co., Riverworks Plant, until their first child was born. She was a resident of Lynnfield, Mass., for 44 years, and a member of the Lynnfield Congregational Church, a Girl Scout Leader, and neighborhood chairman and member of the Business and Professional Women's Club. She was a member of the Woman's Club in Lynnfield and Homestead, Fla., for a total of 50 years, holding many offices and serving as president in Lynnfield. She retired from the Internal Revenue Service, Andover, Mass., and was a member of NARFE. For the next 20 years, she divided her time between South Florida and Nova Scotia, where she loved to paint landscapes, flowers and her family. She and Ken were members of First Methodist Church of Homestead until Hurricane Andrew caused them to relocate to North Port, where they were members of the Christ United Methodist Church in Venice.
She will be greatly missed by her loving husband, Norman Kenmure Wade; son and daughter-in-law, David and Clara Wade; daughter, Roberta Wade, and daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Wade and Bob Breen; grandchildren, Glenn and David Wade, Patrick and Michael Breen; great-grandchildren, Evan and Cameron Wade; and sisters, Dorothy Doyle of Sun City West, Ariz., and Jean Chiary of Vero Beach, Fla.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, March 22, at the James A. McKee Funeral Homes, 14538 S. Tamiami Trail, North Port. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at Christ United Methodist Church, 1475 Center Road, Venice.

Dorothy I. Larson
Dorothy Irene Larson passed away Monday morning at home.
She is loved and missed by her fiancé, Chet Sours. Dorothy moved here in December 1997 from Milwaukee, Wis. She had many friends in Milwaukee and in Warren, Ohio, where she lived for 20 years before retiring to her home state of Wisconsin. There will be no local services. Leroy S. Purvis
Leroy Samuel Purvis, 79, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Feb. 9, 2002.
He was born
Dec. 2, 1933, in Pensacola, Fla., to the late Samuel and Eula (Rogers) Purvis. He came to this area in 1964 from Pensacola. Leroy served his country in the Army during World War II. He worked as a groundskeeper at the Edison Home & Museum for many years before retiring. He was a very active member of Church of God of Prophecy, and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Leroy will be greatly missed by his daughters, Deloris (Bill) Montgomery of Punta Gorda, Joan Tolbert of Milton, Fla., and Martha (James) Douglas of Tallahassee, Fla.; stepson, Cleveland Stewart of Milton; sister, Eula Mae Mathis of Jupiter, Fla.; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Church of God of Prophecy in Punta Gorda. The service in celebration of Leroy's life will follow at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Pinecrest Cemetery in Sebring, Fla. Albina R. Churchill
Albina R. Churchill, 81, of Englewood, Fla., died Feb. 9, 2002, at Community Hospital East, Indianapolis, Ind.
She was born
March 20, 1920, in Indianapolis, to John and Carolina Butara. She worked for Eli-Lilly Co. in Indianapolis in the capsule assorting department for 30 years, retiring in 1985. She has lived in Florida since 1990, coming from Indianapolis.
Surviving are a son, Jay McColley of Shelbyville, Ind.; and two sisters, Alice White and Caroline Seymour. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard C. Church, on June 30, 1966; and a brother.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, Shelbyville. Burial will be at a later date.

Eileen Beatty Dowling, of Boca Grande, Fla., died Feb. 10, 2002.
She was born
in Paterson, N.J., and came to this area in 1993, from South Miami, Fla. She was a model and a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Boca Grande.
She is survived by her husband, William, whom she met exactly 11 years ago on Feb. 10, 1991; a son, Shane T. (Elyce) Beatty of Bradenton; a stepson, Michael G. (Desrie) Dowling of Lovettsville, Va.; a stepdaughter, Megan M. (William F. Cantarinni) of Redondo Beach, Calif.; a brother, Thomas J. (Carol) Donnelly of Hobe Sound, Fla.; and two grandchildren, T.J. Stone and Tara Anne Betty.

Donald Thomas Cassada
Donald T. Cassada, 90, of Arcadia, Fla., died Feb. 10, 2002.
He was born
Oct. 25, 1911, in Parishville, N.Y. Mr. Cassada moved to Fort Myers in 1972 and then to Arcadia in 1991. He was an engineer at Pratt Whitney in Hartford, Conn., where he retired after 32 years, in 1972. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Agawam, Mass., and New Hope Christian Church of Arcadia. He was active in many clubs and associations: Masonic Apollo Lodge No. 59 in Suffield, Conn., Eastern Star Peace River No. 30 in Arcadia, National Campers & Travelers Hiram Rollers No. 126 of Fort Myers, Fla., a dual member of the National Campers & Travelers Chapter 6 of Connecticut, a member of the DeSoto Ham Radio Club of Arcadia, and Emergency Management communication for special need shelters.
Mr. Cassada was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth; three brothers and a sister. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Cookie) Cassada; daughter, Patricia ( Ken) Aldrich of Vernon, Conn.; sons, Norman Cassada of Enfield, Conn., and Richard (Dawn) Cassada of Newington, Conn.; stepchildren, Brian Low of Columbia, S.C., Loyd (Patricia) Low of Oveida, Fla., Connie Low of Massapequa Park, N.Y., Liz (Paul) Coppolo of Schenectady, N.Y., and Christopher (Ruth) Low of Schenectady, N.Y.; brother, William (Norma) Cassada of Edgewater, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at New Hope Christian Church in Arcadia. There will also be a Masonic service. Burial will be at Lee Memorial Park, Lehigh Acres, Fla., in the Masonic section.

Frederick W. Denbrock
Frederick William Denbrock, 74, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Jan. 19, 2002.
He was born
Dec. 14, 1927, in Butler Township, Tekonsha, Mich., to the late Albert and Minnie (Kowalski) Denbrock. He began wintering here from Homer, Mich., in 1994, extending his stay the last few years. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force at Hickam Air Base in Hawaii. He retired as a sales executive with Kar Products. He was very active in the Gideons International, and held several positions at Cooks Prairie Baptist Church in Homer and Peace River Baptist Church in Punta Gorda.
Frederick will be greatly missed by his wife of 54 years, Ruth; daughter, Carolyn (Dan) Miller of Marshall, Mich.; sons, Larry (Laurie) Denbrock of Memphis, Tenn., and Mike (Diane) Denbrock of South Bend, Ind.; sister, Mona Bell Prentice of Michigan Center, Mich.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will take place in Albion, Mich., with the Burial in Homer. Margaret A. Tribbett
Margaret A. Tribbett, 53, of Logansport, Ind., died Jan. 20, 2002, at Memorial Hospital, Logansport.
She was born
Feb. 10, 1948, in Logansport, the daughter of Robert W. Hardt and Lucy M. (Graham) Hardt (deceased). She was a customer service manager for Wal-Mart. Margaret was a graduate of Logansport High School. She married Jerry Reames on Feb. 19, 1966, in Logansport. On July 22, 1978, she was married to Jerry L. Tribbett, who survives. Margaret was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Logansport, and enjoyed reading, watching movies and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry L. Tribbett of Logansport; a son, William J. Tribbett of Logansport; daughters, Lori A. Frame and Rebecca J. Tocco, both of Logansport, and Melissa E. Hunt of Port Charlotte; her father, Robert W. Hardt; a sister, Jeannette Berkshire of Shelbyville, Ind.; brothers, Robert W. Hardt Jr. of Cypress, Calif., and Thomas Hardt of Logansport; and nine grandchildren.
Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Fisher Funeral Chapel, Logansport, and one hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Logansport, with the Rev. Sandy Hutchins officiating. Interment is at Mount Hope Cemetery, Logansport.

Kenneth M. Drury
Kenneth M. Drury, 86, of Englewood, Fla., died Jan. 20, 2002, at Englewood Community Hospital, Englewood.
Mr. Drury was born
Oct. 31, 1915, in Niagara Falls, N.Y., to Marion and Matilda (Wolfe) Drury. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in Naples, Foggia, North Apennines, Po Valley, Rome, Arno, Tunisia, as well as Africa and the Middle East. Kenneth married the former Erna D'Attilio on Nov. 9, 1946, in Lockport, N.Y., and was employed with the Harrison Radiator Division of General Motors Corp. in Lockport for more than 42 years, retiring in 1975. He was of the 3rd Degree in the Knights of Columbus in Lockport and, after moving to Florida, he had memberships in VFW Post No. 10178, BPO Elks Lodge 2378 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 3885, all in Englewood.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Erna "Dee" Drury of Englewood; a daughter, Sandra Intihar of Englewood; a son, Robert (Diane) Drury of Lockport; brothers, Manuel (Eleanor) Drury of Lockport, Donald (Patricia) Drury of Sanford, Fla.; a sister, Lucille (William) Connor of Winter Park, Fla.; grandchildren, Scott (Lisa) Intihar and Kristine (Derek) Ficarra, both of Englewood, Kevin and David Drury of Lockport; and great-grandchildren, Zachary and Matthew Intihar and Dylan Ficarra.
There will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church. Inurnment will be at later at Cold Springs Cemetery, Lockport. Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel.
