Carl Dudley Cate

Carl Dudley Cate, 74, of North Port, Fla., died on Jan. 24, 2002.

He was born icon June 17, 1927, in Albany, Ga. He moved to North Port nine years ago from Venice, Fla., where he was a resident for 28 years. He was a sales manager for Bills Gun Shop in Venice, for 30 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Dolly Cate of North Port; two daughters, Lisa Eutsler of North Port, and Sharon Dees of Laurens, S.C.; three sons, Joseph "Jodi" Cate and Carl "Buddy" Cate, both of North Port, and Robert Cate of South Carolina; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Farley Funeral Home, North Port Chapel. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at the funeral home's chapel. Burial will follow at Fort Green Methodist Cemetery in Fort Green, Fla.

Carolyn Louise Wachob

Carolyn Louise Wachob, 82, of North Port, Fla., died on Jan. 23, 2002.

She was born icon March 28, 1919, in Corsica, Pa. She came to this area in 1979 from Cochranton, Pa. Prior to her retirement, she was the owner of Wachob's Golden Dawn Grocery stores. She was an associate member of Trinity United Methodist Church in North Port and a member of Deckerds United Methodist Church in Deckerds, Pa.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Frederick Wachob of North Port; a son, Robert E. (and his wife, Jacqueline) Wachob of North Port; a stepdaughter, Jean Elizabeth Preston of Brockway, Pa.; five sisters, M. Thelma Glenn and Lois Glenn, both of DuBois, Pa., Bernice Smith of Brookville, Pa., Wilta Lasher and Anna Pauline Rankin, both of Corsica; two brothers, W. Paul Glenn and Harry Glenn, both of Corsica; two grandchildren, Robert Wachob Jr. and Rhonda McCandless, both of North Port; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon Wachob and Dustin McCandless, both of North Port. She was preceded in death in 1989 by a grandson, Darrin Wachob.

Funeral services and Burial will be in Pennsylvania.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Farley Funeral Home, North Port Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Raymond J. Markiewicz

Raymond J. Markiewicz, 64, of North Port, Fla., died Jan. 21, 2002, in Hospice House of Venice, Fla. Arrangements by the James A. McKee Funeral Homes, North Port.

Florence J. Nickerson

Florence J. Nickerson, 76, of Englewood, Fla., passed away Jan. 18, 2002, at her Sarasota County residence. Arrangements by Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel.

Robert J. Carrodus

Robert J. Carrodus, a former resident of Englewood Isles and Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Bryn Mawr Terrace Convalescent Center in Bryn Mawr, Pa. He was 90.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., he had lived in South Port Square in Port Charlotte for 11 years. He moved to Englewood from Silver Springs, Md., in 1974.

Mr. Carrodus was a civil engineer with the U.S. Naval Department, Washington, D.C. He was a member of the Englewood United Methodist Church and Port Charlotte United Methodist Church.

Beloved husband of the late Annie M. Guthrie Carrodus, he is survived by two daughters, L. Frances Shaffer of Springfield, Va., and Nancy Sbvanda of Doylestown, Pa.; and one son, Thomas R. of New York, N.Y.; a brother, William A. of Newtown Square, Pa.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the Tree of Life Memorial c/o Englewood United Methodist Church, 700 E. Dearborn St., Englewood, FL 34223.

Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Wm. Rowen Grant Funeral Home.

Asa Christmas

Asa Christmas was born icon in Warrenton, N.C., on June 24, 1938, to the late Gradison and Mary Christmas, who preceded him in death.

Life came to an end Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital, Port Charlotte, Fla.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Shirley; two sons, Brian and Irving of New Jersey; three grandchildren, Briana, Brittany and Cheyenne; three brothers, Tex, Lloyd and Kenny of Warrenton, N.C.; three sisters, Irene of Warrenton, N.C., Maxine of Huntsville, Ala., Geraldine of South Orange, N.J. (one deceased sister, Gertie); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Asa and Shirley lived in Montclair, N.J., for more than 26 years. Asa was employed by AT&T for 43 years and they retired to Port Charlotte in November 2000.

Asa enjoyed his new home very much. Whenever family and friends visited they would find Asa in his favorite chair in front of his big-screen TV or sitting outside on the lanai enjoying the year-round Florida sunshine. Asa also enjoyed the many family dinners. He was a loving grandfather to his three granddaughters. Asa was also devoted to his father-in-law, Allen Hansford.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Jan. 31 at Highway Holiness Church in Port Charlotte, with the Rev. Elaine Watts and Pastor James Abercrombia officiating. Burial was held at Indian Springs Cemetery, Punta Gorda, Fla. Hickson Funeral Home, Arcadia, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

Jonas L. Morehart

Jonas L. Morehart, Lt. Cmdr. U.S. Navy Ret., 67, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at his residence.

Born July 16, 1934, in Rosedale, Ohio, Jonas, a retired fire safety engineer for the National Institute of Health in Maryland and a veteran of the Korean War, U.S. Navy, he moved to this area from his home of 25 years in Alexandria, Va., to Punta Gorda in 1994.

He was an active member of the City of Punta Gorda Building Commission, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Ponce de Leon Knights of Columbus Council 8074, Punta Gorda, the Computer Club of Punta Gorda and Computer Users Club of Port Charlotte, Fla.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 47 years, Constance L. Morehart; two sons, John W. Morehart of Knoxville, Tenn., and Dr. James H. Morehart of Los Angles, Calif.; four daughters, Mary J. Jones of Falls Church, Va., Carolyn L. Cason of Alexandria, Va., Evelyn A. Slama of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Elaine K. Clem of Alexandria, Va., and four grandchildren.

Visitation was held Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with evening Scripture service at 7 p.m. at Roberson Funeral Home, Punta Gorda Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Punta Gorda. Burial will be held privately at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd, Sarasota, FL 34238.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Punta Gorda.

Helen F. Novakowski

Helen F. Novakowski, 84, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002.

She was born icon Sept. 7, 1917, in Chicago, Ill. Mrs. Novakowski had resided in Punta Gorda since 1974, moving from Chicago, Ill. She was preceded in death by her sister, Gertrude Sipora.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Thomas F. Novakowski of Punta Gorda; a daughter, Maryann H. Johnson of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a son, William T. Novak of Hendersonville, N.C.; a brother, Raymond Jadczak of Frankfurt, Ill.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A family gathering will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at the Punta Gorda Chapel of Kays-Ponger Royal Palm Funeral Home. A memorial Mass will be offered at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Punta Gorda.

Donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd.,

Sarasota, FL 34238.

Cremation arrangements will be under the direction of Kays-Ponger Funeral Home, Punta Gorda.

Lois Sloan Pinkleton

Lois Sloan Pinkleton, 76, of North Fort Myers, Fla., died Jan. 30, 2002.

She was born icon March 4, 1925, in Nashville, Tenn., and moved to this area four years ago from there. She was a homemaker, who enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing and taking care of her family. Lois was of the Baptist faith. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Sloan, in 1970.

She is survived by her children, Sandra Love, Patricia Sims, Dean Sloan, Ray Sloan, and Donald "Good Buddy" Sloan all of Fort Myers, Fla., and Kitty Allen, Ronnie Sloan and Ricky Sloan, all of Nashville, Tenn.; 29 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and 10 brothers and sisters.

The family will receive friends Monday, Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Sonshine Worship Center, Fort Myers. A Celebration of Life service will follow at noon, with Pastor Calvert officiating. Internment will be at the Fort Myers City Cemetery.

Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services, Punta Gorda is in charge of arrangements.

Michael W. Valentine

Michael W. Valentine, 51, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Jan. 28, 2002.

He was born icon November 10, 1951 to Beulah Valentine Hendricks and the late Howard Valentine.

He came to this area 20 years ago from Washington. He was a millwright in the ship-building industry before retiring. He was a member of the Center for Independent Living and was of the Christian faith. He will be remembered for being very active in helping people through Internet research.

Michael leaves behind his wife Julia; daughters, Amy Valentine of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Theresa Hascall of Port Charlotte, Fla.; son, Mike Myers of California; mother, Beulah Hendricks of St. Joseph, Mo.; brothers, Jim Valentine of Washington and Paul Valentine of Missouri; grandchildren, Kayla Myers and Alan Valentine; grandmother, Viola Valentine of Missouri; and an aunt, Betty Church of Washington.

Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services, Punta Gorda.

Edna Mae Vaught

Edna Mae Vaught, 107, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at IHS of Port Charlotte, Fla.

She was born icon Oct. 15, 1894, in Fort Wayne, Ind., and moved to Charlotte County in 1990 from Fort Wayne. She was a member and a retired church secretary of the First Christian Church of Fort Wayne. She attended the First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte.

She is survived by a daughter, Agnes M. Stauffer of Punta Gorda; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte. Dr. G. Russell Hickman will officiate. Further memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at the First Christian Church of Fort Wayne. Interment will be at the Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel.

Alma E. Kleckner

Alma E. Kleckner, 96, of Bradenton, Fla., and formerly of North Port, Fla., died Jan. 30, 2002, at home.

She was born icon in Nanticoke, Pa., on Nov. 9, 1905. Mrs. Kleckner came to North Port from Bloomsburg, Pa., in 1964 and moved to Bradenton in 1998. She was a member of the Harbor Cove Boat Club Women's Auxiliary, and directed the Saturday morning Coffee Hour of Harbor Cove for 15 years.

She is survived by a daughter, Janet Dougherty of Bradenton; six grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church in Bradenton. Burial will be at Restlawn Gardens Cemetery, Port Charlotte, Fla.

Memorial contributions may be made to Manasota Lighthouse for the Blind, 7318 Tamiami Trail N., Sarasota, FL 34243.

William H. "Bill" Claman

William R. "Bill" Claman, 73, of Arcadia, Fla., died Jan. 30, 2002, at Tampa General Hospital.

Born Dec. 15, 1928, in Pocohontas County, Iowa, he moved to Arcadia in 1987 from Wauchula, Fla. Mr. Claman was a retired 30-year U.S. Navy veteran and also retired from the Senior Friendship Center after 10 years. An avid traveler and square dancer, he and his second his wife, Sandra, attended 13 national square dance conventions and traveled to 49 states. Locally, they danced at the Arcadia Palace Hall.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra L. Claman, Arcadia; a daughter, Kimberly A. (husband David) Behrens of Gurnee, Ill.; a son, William H. (wife Sandy) Claman Jr., of Norwich, Conn.; three stepsons, Jeffrey A. (wife Cindi) Carlson, of Lakeland, Fla., Gregg S. (wife Karl) Carlson, of Bradenton, Fla., and John H. "Jodi" Carlson, of Arcadia; a brother, John Claman of Palm Springs, Calif.; a sister, Virgie Henrich of Fort Dodge, Iowa; 11 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at the Robarts Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 at Pine Level United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roy Arms and the Rev. Don Varnadore officiating. Flag folding and presentation will be by the DeSoto County Honor Guard. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4 at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla., with full military honors.

Robarts Funeral Home, Arcadia is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur Edward Connor

Arthur Edward Connor, 87, of Englewood, Fla., died Feb. 1, 2002. Cremation arrangements will be made by Lemon Bay Funeral Homes.

Victor Pavel

Victor Pavel, 80, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Dec. 31, 2001, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda. Arrangements are by Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Punta Gorda Chapel.

Sharon W. Burnett

Sharon W. Burnett, 52, of North Port, Fla., died Jan. 5, 2002.

She was born icon Sept. 3, 1949, in Hackensack, N.J., and had lived here for 19 years.

She is survived by her husband, David C. Burnett of North Port; stepson, Gregory Burnett of Palm Beach, Fla.; sister, Susan Crocitto of Hackensack; and brothers, Garry, Scott and Gregory Weedo, all of Port Charlotte.

Mychajlo Lysak

Mychajlo Lysak, 78, of North Port, Fla., died on Jan. 5, 2002.

He was born icon May 18, 1923, in Zborew, Ukraine. He came to this area in 1989 from Buffalo, N.Y. He worked for Trico Co. in Buffalo until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in North Port. He was a member of Organization of Defense of the Four Freedoms of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America.

He is survived by his wife, Florence Lysak of North Port; and a sister in Ukraine.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Farley Funeral Home, North Port Chapel. A Panachyda will be offered at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at Farley Funeral Home, North Port Chapel, and continue on to St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Mass will be conducted by the Right Rev. Mitrat Archpriest Wolodymyr Woloszczuk. Burial will follow at Venice Memorial Gardens.
