Eulalie Crawford "Leah" Adams
Eulalie Crawford "Leah" Adams, 80, of Oxford, Miss., died at her home Saturday, May 6, 2000.
Mrs. Adams was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a member of the church's Alma Shaw Circle and the Congregational Care Committee; a member and former president of the Oxford Garden Club; and a member of Creative Designers Group, Women's Forum Book Club and the University of Mississippi Chancellor's Trust.
Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Roland Adams.
She is survived by her daughter, Judith Ann Deterly, Jackson, Miss.; and her sons, Jesse R. Adams Jr., New Orleans, La.; and James F. Adams, Destin; eight grandchildren, including James F. Adams Jr. and Ashley L. Adams, Destin; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were conducted Monday, May 8, at the First Presbyterian Church in Oxford with interment in St. Peter's Cemetery in Oxford. Waller Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
The family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the University of Mississippi Foundation, Chapel Fund.
Avanell J. Sullivant
Avanell J. Sullivant, 67, of Freeport, died Friday, May 5, 2000, in the home of her daughter in Geneva, Ala.
Mrs. Sullivant was born Oct. 2, 1932, in Geneva County, Alabama.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Joe and Lezar Harrison Johnson, and a grandson, Corey White.
She is survived by her husband, Grafton Sullivant of Freeport; her mother, Johnnie Murel Holland of Geneva; two daughters and sons-in-law Denise and Jack Cruey, Bartow, Fla., and Liz and Charles White, Geneva; four sons, James L. Sullivant of Geneva; Avern Sullivant, DeFuniak Springs; Larry Sullivant, Bartow; and Alan and his wife Marlena, Freeport; two brothers, Pat Johnson, Wicksburg, Ala., and Huey Coats, Cobb, Ga.; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services were conducted Monday, May 8, at the Devo Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert McMicken officiating. Internment was in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Pittman Funeral Home of Geneva directing.
Walter Christopher Russo
Dr. Walter Christopher Russo of Destin, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, in a local hospital. The son of the late Dr. Anthony Russo Sr. and the late Nellie Apken Russo, he was born Dec. 1, 1925, in New Orleans, La.
Surviving are his wife, Earlene McPherson Russo; daughter Leigh Anne Russo Wimberley of Jackson, Miss.; two granddaughters, Ashley Brooke Patton and Lesleigh Anne Patton of Mississippi State University of Starkville, Miss.; and his sister, Dr. Joyce Russo Adema of New Orleans.
Dr. Russo practiced optometry for 43 years. He was in private practice in New Orleans for five years. In 1953, he moved to Bay Street Louis, Miss., and practiced until his retirement in 1993. He served as president of the New Orleans Optometic Society. He was also active in civic affairs in Bay Street Louis, serving two terms as president of the Rotary Club, vice president of the Hancock Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the American Cancer Society.
Dr. Russo was a charter member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bay Street Louis, where he served as chairman of the building of the new church and also was elected elder. He served as elder of the Gulfport Presbyterian Church and was a charter member and founder of the Northwood Hills Presbyterian Church of Gulfport. At the time of his death, Dr. Russo was a member of Safe Harbor Presbyterian Church in Destin and was serving as elder and chairman of the building of the new sanctuary.
Services for Dr. Russo will be 10 a.m., Monday, May 8, at Safe Harbor Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Tom Hughes officiating. Interment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola at 1:15 p.m. The family will greet friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.
The family requests that donations be made to the building fund at Safe Harbor Presbyterian Church, 801 Airport Road, Destin, FL 32541 in memory of Dr. Russo.

Joanne K. Dodd
Joanne K. Dodd, 56, of Destin, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000.
She was born in Pontiac, Mich., raised in Memphis, Tenn., and had lived in Destin for 26 years.
She was co-founder of the Noah's Ark Preschool Ministry of St. Andrew's By-The-Sea Episcopal Church and active in various other ministries of the church. She was named "disabled professional woman of the year" by the Fort Walton Beach Pilot Club of the Miracle Strip in 1992. She is past president of the Episcopal Women of the Church, St. Andrew's By-The-Sea, Destin.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, James M. Dodd; her son and daughter-in-law James Jr. and Debbie Dodd; and grandchildren Brandon and Audrey, all of Milton; her son Michael Dodd of Cleveland, Tenn.; her mother Thelma Draper of Destin; her sisters and brothers-in-law Nancy and Richard Veldman of Destin and Jackie and John Wetzel of Montrose, W.V.; her brother and sister-in-law Harry and Terri Draper of Memphis; her aunt Marilyn Goggins of West Caldwell, N.J.; and her aunt and uncle Helen and Roy Bowlin of Santa Rosa Beach.
Funeral services will be at St. Andrew's By-The-Sea Episcopal Church in Destin at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 6, with Father Mike Hesse officiating. Interment will follow in Destin Memorial Cemetery. A reception will be at the church following interment.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Andrew's By-The-Sea, earmarked: Uganda Fund, P.O. Box 338, Destin, FL 32540.

Harry William Hilton Jr.
Harry William Hilton Jr., 75, of Roswell, Ga., and formerly of Destin, died April 25, 2000.
Survivors include seven children, James Hilton, Peggy Andrews, Michele Snell, Harry William Hilton III, Phyl Hilton, Phyllis Schmidt and Lois Wright; a brother, Clifford Hilton of Barnstable, Mass.; a sister, Peggy Jameson of Ormond Beach; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Private memorial services were held Thursday, April 27.

Sara W. Wood
Sara W. Wood, 65, of Destin died Friday, April 28, 2000, in a local hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer.
She was born in Birmingham, Ala., on Feb. 6, 1935. She was a retired real estate broker, was a member of the Florida Board of Realtors and a former member of AHOY in Destin. She had lived in Destin for the past 11 years.
Survivors include her husband, Richard A. Wood, of Destin; her mother, Sara M. Woodrow, Birmingham, Ala.; son Rick A. Wood III and his wife, Kim, of Portland, Texas; daughter Sara Anna Zahn and her husband, Tim, of Kingsville, Texas; brother David Woodrow and his wife, Gail, of Alabaster, Ala.; grandchildren Michalle Willis of Bryan, Texas, Erin Willis of San Marcos, Texas, Brianne Zahn of Kingsville, Texas, and Chad and Jessica Wood, Portland, Texas.
Mrs. Wood requested that at her death, she be cremated.
McLaughlin Mortuary in Fort Walton Beach was entrusted with the services.
Richard Zimmer
Richard "Zim" Zimmer, 70, of Destin, died April 18, 2000, at home with his family. A private memorial service will be conducted in his honor.
Born Feb. 6, 1930, in Lancaster, N.Y., Mr. Zimmer was a Palatine, Ill., area resident for 30 years. He was retired from American Allsafe where he worked as a salesman for 32 years. He was recently honored by his company naming a new product after him -- the Slim ZIM.
Surviving family members include his wife, Carol Zimmer; his children, Darcy (David) Hollingbery, Rhesha (Patrick) Driscoll, Jennifer (Rick) Wellhausen, Melissa Moritz, Neal Moritz; and grandchildren Nichole and Ricky.
Any memorials may be made to the local American Cancer Society for prostate cancer.
Lois Jean Hilton
Lois Jean Hilton, 75, of Roswell, Ga., and formerly of Destin, died April 11, 2000.
Survivors include her husband, Harry William Hilton; seven children, James Hilton, Peggy Andrews, Michelle Snell, Phyl Hilton, Phyllis Schmidt and Lois Wright; one sister, Evelyn Kautz of Lancaster, Pa.; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Private memorial services were conducted Thursday, April 13.

John "Woody" Loyall
John "Woody" Loyall, 74, died April 9, 2000, in Fort Walton Beach after a short illness. John and his wife, Jeanetta, were residents of Sandestin for the past 20 years, having spent their previous 30 years of marriage in Memphis, Tenn.
Mr. Loyall was born Jan. 26, 1926, in El Reno, Okla., the son of the late John Loyall and Lottie Atkinson. He served in World War II as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps' 4th Division. He fought in and survived life-threatening injuries from the February 1945 invasion of Iwo Jima on Mount Suribachi.
Mr. Loyall is survived by his wife, Jeanetta Ditto Loyall; one sister, Jewel, and her husband, Wesley Van Gundy, of El Reno, Okla.; and numerous nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and -nephews.
A celebration of his life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at the Santa Rosa Beach Community Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the building fund of the Santa Rosa Beach Community Church, P.O. Box 1723, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459.

Patricia Marie Potts
Patricia Marie Potts, 67, of Asheville, N.C., and Destin, died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, Baltimore, Md., after a long illness. Memorial requiem masses will be conducted at St. Jude's National Shrine in Baltimore and at Our Lady of Victories, Glenelg, Adelaide, South Australia.
Formerly of Adelaide, South Australia and Brentwood, England, Mrs. Potts was the only child of Patricia and Leo J. Kenny. She graduated from St. Aloysious Convent of Mercy College in Adelaide. She was active in the Women's Auxiliary of the Buncombe County (N.C.) Medical Society, Asheville Health Adventure and Thoms Hospital Rehabilitation Center.
She is survived by her husband, Leo J. Potts, M.D.; sons and their wives Andrew James Stewart Potts and Deborah of Birmingham, Ala.; Mark Alexander Stewart Potts and Kelli of Atlanta, Ga.; Jonathan Matthew Steward Potts, M.D., and Diana of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Nicholas Leo Stewart Potts, M.D., and Ann of Adelaide, South Australia; and her eight grandchildren: Robert, Sarah and Katie Potts of Birmingham, Lydia and Isabelle Potts of Atlanta, and Laura, Sam and Leo Potts of Adelaide, South Australia.

Neil Manahan
Neil Manahan, a resident of Santa Rosa Beach since 1988, died at his home, Wednesday, March 22, 2000. He had battled leukemia, non-Hodgkins lymphoma and other secondary cancers for more than 15 years.
Survivors include his wife, Teresa Wells Manahan; step-son, Tyler Woolson; sons, Brian and David Manahan of Arizona; parents-in-law, Bob and Martha Wells; sister-in-law and niece, Mary Wells and Kimberly McWhorter; daughters-in-law, Kay and Fran; brothers-in-law, Steve and Chris; and granddaughters Erin and Kathleen.
Private celebrations of Manahan's life will be conducted locally and elsewhere according to his wishes.

L. Don Lehmkuhl
L. Don Lehmkuhl, Ph.D., 70, died March 19, 2000, following a four-year battle with cancer.
He was born in Lodgepole, Neb., Jan. 2, 1930, to Lloyd Henry and Faye Hafer Lehmkuhl. He attended elementary and high school in Lodgepole and graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 1953 with a BS in physical education and biology. He was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve and served on submarine chaser USS PC 572 as engineering officer for two years during the Korean conflict.
On Oct. 3, 1953, he and Carol Dill of Belvidere, Neb., were married and three daughters were born to this union: Pamela Kay, Sandra Sue and Linda Dee.
In 1955 he enrolled in graduate school at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, where he earned a certificate in physical therapy (1956) and the MS (1958) and Ph.D. (1959) degrees in human physiology. He taught in medical schools of the University of Iowa, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and Baylor in Houston.
He joined the staff of the Institute for Rehabilitation and Research and became a faculty member of the Baylor College of Medicine in 1976, rising to the rank of associate professor. During the 1970s and 1980s, Dr. Lehmkuhl traveled on scientific exchange visits to Neurological Laboratories in the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Sweden and Belgium, and in 1992 was a consultant on prevention of brain injuries in Saudi Arabia.
From 1990-94 he was director of the Southwest Regional Brain Injury Rehabilitation and Prevention Center. In 1994, Dr. Lehmkuhl became director of the rehabilitation research and training center on rehabilitation interventions for TBI, one of two RRTCs funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research to advance the field of brain injury rehabilitation.
He authored or co-authored more than 50 publications in major professional journals and textbooks.
Among the several awards and honors he received are the Mary McMillan Lecture Award, the highest honor awarded by the American Physical Therapy Association in recognition of significant and lasting contributions to the field; Appreciation Award from the Council on Education of the American Occupational Therapy Association; Excellence in Teaching Award presented by the Graduate Physical Therapy Program, Case Western University; the 1991 Outstanding Clinical Service Award of the National Head Injury Foundation; the 1992 Tom Dean Humanitarian Award presented by the Texas Head Injury Association; 1993 Distinguished Service Award of the Baylor College of Medicine Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; the 1994 Marcus Fuhrer Research Achievement Award; and the 1999 Gold Key Award, the highest honor bestowed by the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine.
In January 1995, Dr. Lehmkuhl reduced his academic faculty and research obligations at BCM and TIRR to 25 percent and returned to Houston from Florida one week each month to assist in the preparation of research reports describing results being collected by staff of the Brain Injury Research Center.
He retired completely at the end of 1998 to live in Santa Rosa Beach. He was a member of the board of deacons for the Community Church as it began a building program and as chairman of the Coastal Heritage Preservation Foundation, which became a branch of the Three Arts Alliance. He was a member of the Community Church choir, its Gospel Quartet and the Community Chorus of the Three Arts Alliance.
Survivors include his wife, Carol, three daughters and families, Pamela Dlhy and husband Allan, and grandchildren Amy and Michael of Wheaton, Ill., Sandra Nygren and husband, Mark, and grandchildren Amanda and Jennifer of The Woodlands, Texas, and Linda Larsen and husband, Rob, and grandchildren Alexandra, Shelby and Andrew of Georgetown, Texas; sisters Leila Markel of Boulder, Colo., and Betty Schirmer of Chester, Ill.
There will be two memorial services. The first service will be at Santa Rosa Beach Community Church at 2 p.m. Friday, March 24. The second will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, at St. Philip Presbyterian Church in Houston.
