John S. Kay

John S. Kay, 65, of Destin and formerly of Albertville, Ala., died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at his home.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-73.

Mr. Kay was preceded in death by his father, William Henry Kay, and mother, Emma Francis Kay.

He is survived by his wife, Marianne "Peggy" Kay; five sons, Steve Kay of Gadsden, Ala., Roy Abbott of Kenai, Alaska, and Tommy Abbott, Mark Abbott and Randy Abbott of Conway, Ark.; daughter Charlene Renee Kilpatrick of Destin; two sisters, Verna Mae Sims and Lily Stephens of Albertville, Ala.; and eight grandchildren.

Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, at Albertville Funeral Home in Albertville.

Rietta Winn Bailey Howard

Rietta Winn Bailey Howard, 87, died March 6, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Howard was born in Cochran, Ga., on Dec. 12, 1912, the daughter of Henry Blevins Bailey and Annie Virgin Winn Bailey. She was a resident of Fort Walton Beach for 50 years and a teacher of English and world literature for 40 years.

Mrs. Howard is survived by her husband of 60 years, Fred Ervin Howard Jr. of Fort Walton Beach, and their five children and spouses: Rietta Abigail and Larry Frank Dillard, Dublin, Ga.; Katherine Marie and Robert Lee Douglas Jr., Shalimar; Fred Ervin Howard III, Fort Walton Beach; Emilie Chaudron "Lili" and John Lincoln Bush, Los Angeles; and Henry Blevins and Jennifer Lehmann Howard, Destin.

She is also survived by several grandchildren including Dylan Bailey Howard and his sister Marleigh Elizabeth Howard of Destin; her sister, Katherine Ann Frazer, Athens, Ga.; several nieces and a nephew.

Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, March 11, at St. Simon's on the Sound Episcopal Church with the Rev. James S. Spencer presiding. Burial will follow at Beal Memorial Cemetery in Fort Walton Beach, with arrangements by McLaughlin Mortuary. The family is receiving friends at home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the St. Simon's on the Sound Memorial Fund for support of the church's music ministries.

Edna Bragg Babcock

Edna Bragg Babcock, 68, of Dothan, Ala., died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at her residence following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel in Dothan with the Rev. David Powell and Dr. Harper Shannon officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. There will also be a memorial Eucharist Tuesday, March 7, at 11 a.m. at The Episcopal Church of the Nativity.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law Hilda and Wade Jackson, Santa Rosa Beach and grandchildren Taylor Jackson, Julianne Jackson and Madelyn Jackson, all of Santa Rosa Beach.

Flowers are being accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Wiregrass Hospice, P.O. Box 2127, Dothan, AL 36302, The Episcopal Church of the Nativity, The Capital Expansion Fund, 205 Holly Lane, Dothan, AL 36301, or Girls Inc., P.O. Box 622, Dothan, AL 36302.

Hans E. Lehmann

Hans E. Lehmann of Destin and formerly of New Orleans, La., died March 1, 2000. Born Aug. 31, 1907, in Hamburg, Germany, he came to New Orleans in 1929, where he was in business until serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He returned to New Orleans after serving in Europe and North Africa, and moved to Destin in 1996.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Sharpe Lehmann; daughters Jennifer Howard of Destin and Dr. Elizabeth Simpson of Louisville, Ky.; sister Lisa Samuel of Nahariya, Israel; brothers Dr. Robert Einstein of Los Angeles and George Einstein of Destin; grandchildren including Bailey and Marleigh Howard of Destin, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was an honorary member of the Destin Lions Club, a member of Touro Synagogue in New Orleans and a long-time member of the New Orleans Athletic Club.

Funeral services will be Saturday, March 4, at 10:30 a.m. at All Faith's Chapel at 5200 Canal Blvd. in New Orleans, with interment in the Garden of Memories in New Orleans.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to Southeastern Guide Dogs, 4210 77th St. East, Palmetto, FL 34221.

Mary Wyman Bryan Bruns

Mary Wyman Bryan Bruns died Feb. 23, 2000, in Panama City.

Born April 28, 1905, in Bound Brook, N.J., she moved to New Orleans as an infant, later attending Louise S. McGehee School, where she graduated in the class of 1923.

Before her marriage to John Dickson Bruns in 1926, Mrs. Bruns wrote and illustrated feature articles for the New Orleans Item. She was a copywriter and editor for the advertising department of New Orleans Item from 1946-52.

She moved to Seagrove Beach in 1961 where she resumed a career as an artist, using oils and watercolors.

Bruns is survived by sons Alan Bruns of Fredericksburg, Va., Scott Bruns of Washington, D.C., and Albert Bruns of Seagrove Beach; a daughter, Mary Katherine Bruns Capdeviele Ascher of Half Moon Bay, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 22, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Laguna Beach (Panama City Beach).

Jerome H. LaChapelle

Jerome H. LaChapelle, 66, of Destin, died Saturday morning, Feb. 19, 2000, at his home.

Born in Detroit, Mr. LaChapelle, with his family, moved to Destin in 1966. The family was among the first permanent residents on Holiday Isle. He was a pioneer of Destin's early resort development.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Sally Jo of Destin; his son, Robert J. and daughter-in-law, Laura M. LaChapelle of Atlanta; his brother and sister-in-law, Robert. E. and Vicki LaChapelle of Indianapolis; and three grandchildren, Sam, Charles and Sara.

A memorial mass conducted by Father Robert Morris will be Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Destin.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Hospice of Northwest Florida Inc. in Niceville.

McLaughlin Mortuary in Fort Walton Beach is handling the arrangements.

Addie "Penny" Dignen

Addie "Penny" Dignen, 86, of Destin, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, in a local hospital. She was born on Feb. 27, 1913, in Memphis, Tenn.

After college, Mrs. Dignen was a professional runway model in Washington, D.C., and New York City. After retiring from modeling, she joined Mr. Dignen in many stations around the world as he served in the United States Air Force.

Upon retirement in 1969, Mr. and Mrs. Dignen made Destin their home. Together, in 1971, they opened the Holiday Inn, and in 1973, the Sky Host Inn, (now Club Destin Resort) where they served as the inn keepers.

Mrs. Dignen was a former president of the National Aquarium Association in Albuquerque, N.M.

Mrs. Dignen is survived by her husband, Warren W. Dignen.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 21, in the McLaughlin Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Evan Bergwall officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, Feb. 20, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home, and burial will be in the Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested contributions be made to Feline Friends of Destin Inc.

McLaughlin Mortuary, Fort Walton Beach, is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur Robert Sisson Sr.

Arthur Robert Sisson Sr., 85, of Seagrove Beach, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, in a local hospital.

He was born in Cleburne, Texas, Feb. 25, 1914, and was a member of St. Rita Catholic Church. He had lived in Santa Rosa Beach since 1986, moving from Auckland, New Zealand.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine A. Sisson, of Seagrove Beach; sons Arthur Robert Sisson Jr. and wife, Diana, of Raleigh, N.C., and Matthew Wright Sisson and wife, Elaine, of Memphis; niece Susan Atkinson of Niceville; and a nephew, Dr. V.C. Seaman Jr. of Indianapolis; and grandchildren Becky Gray, Jeffery Robert Sisson and Deborah K. Sisson.

Services were scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 15, at St. Rita Catholic Church with Father James J. Flaherty officiating. Burial was to be in Gulf Cemetery in Santa Rosa Beach.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to St. Rita Catholic Church.

McLaughlin Twin City Funeral Home in Niceville has been entrusted with arrangements.

Thomas Lee Horne Jr.

Thomas Lee Horne Jr. of Destin and Franklin, La., died Feb. 11, 2000, in Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.

He was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., July 30, 1923. His parents were the late Amilda Knox and Thomas L. Horne of Flintstone, Ga.

Mr. Horne is survived by his wife, Margaret Lee Hope Horne; his sister, Susan Horne Logan of Boone, N.C.; and children, T. Lee Horne III of Destin, Dr. Amilda Knox Horne of Durham, N.C., Roberta Brumby Horne Fisher and husband, Frederick, of Greensboro, N.C., stepdaughter Sherred M. Williams and husband, Fred M. Williams III, of Durham, N.C., and stepson Carnot G. Milligan III of Destin; and seven grandchildren.

Mr. Horne's education included Dahloniga College, University of Georgia, Annapolis and University of Georgia Law School. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity, the Boston Club of New Orleans and a former member of the Crew of Sucrose and the Rotary. He was an Episcopalian.

He practiced law in Athens, Ga., before locating in Franklin, La., and was of counsel to his law firm, Aycock, Horne and Coleman in Franklin and Morgan City, La.

He held directorships in St. Mary Bank and Trust, Morgan City Bank, Riggs Land Co., the Emerald Land Co. and the Rebel Land Co., all of Louisiana.

The family requests that memorials be sent to the Destin Library.

Following cremation, funeral plans in Chattanooga, Tenn., will be announced. Emerald Coast Funeral Home in Fort Walton Beach is in charge of arrangements.

Walter L. Carrol

Walter L. Carroll, a 20-year resident of the area, died Feb. 10, 2000, after a long illness.

Mr. Carroll is survived by his wife of 47 years, Hilde Carroll; four children, James Carroll, Linda Graves, Shirley Carroll and Karlle "Butch" Carroll; seven grandchildren, Renee Campbell, Karlle Carroll Jr., Nicki Lewis, Tommy Graves, Rachell Graves, Lance Carroll and Sasha Carroll; seven great-grandchildren, Timothy, Keke, Bubbah, Sean, Parker, Jade and Beau; and a brother, Bobby Neal Carroll, Coleman, Ala.

The family will receive relatives and friends Feb. 13 at their home. Cards or flowers may be sent to the home at 1305 N. County Road 393, Santa Rosa Beach.

A memorial service will be Monday, Feb. 14, at Village Baptist Church in Destin. The Rev. Thomas E. Graves will officiate.

Barbara Ann Wray

Barbara Ann Wray, 53, of Destin, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, following an extended illness.

Ms. Wray was born in Chicago and served in the U.S. Navy. She has been a resident of Destin since 1996.

She is survived by her family.

A Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 11, Resurrection Catholic Church in Miramar Beach.

Memories may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Michael Ryan Quinlan

Michael Ryan Quinlan, 56, of Fort Walton Beach, died Feb. 4, 2000, at a local hospital.

Born in Pensacola, Mr. Quinlan was raised in Fort Walton Beach. He graduated from Choctawhatchee High School, Pensacola Junior College and Florida State University, where he was a pole vaulter on the track team. He was a lifeguard on the beaches from Destin to Pensacola.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence N. Quinlan Jr.

Survivors include his mother, Rosanne Quinlan; children Robin and Shane Quinlan of Destin; brothers Terrence Quinlan of Milton, Lance Quinlan and his wife, Charlotte, of Shalimar, and Kevin Quinlan and his wife, Sue, of Pitsboro, N.C.; sister Annelise Highley and her husband, Charles, of Boca Raton; and 11 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was scheduled for Friday, Feb. 11. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fort Walton Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family asks friends to make a contribution to a favorite charity.
