Hugh B. Thornton Sr.

Hugh B. Thornton Sr., 72, died Dec. 30, 2000, at his Valencia Condominium home in Destin.

Thornton was a member of Destin United Methodist Church and was involved in many church activities.

He was born in Montgomery, Ala., Nov. 19, 1928.

He attended the University of Alabama and served in the U.S. Navy.

Thornton is survived by a son, Hugh B. Thornton Jr., and his wife, Cecelia, of Birmingham, Ala., and by a daughter, Katherine T. Beachum, and her husband, Gary, of East Greenwich, R.I.

He is also survived by brothers, Rube E. Thornton of Montgomery, Ala., Charles Thornton of Seagrove Beach and Joseph Thornton of Leesburg; one sister, Nell Thornton, of Seagrove Beach; five grandchildren, Hugh B. Thornton II, Tere Tranick Thornton, Hugh Hampton Beachum, Hunter Scott Beachum and Henry Browning Beachum.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at Destin United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Thornton's name to Destin United Methodist Church.

His care was entrusted to the National Cremation Society of Fort Walton Beach.

Charles W. Clements Sr.

Charles W. Clements Sr., 78, of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Dallas, Texas, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Baylor Hospital in Dallas.

He was the founder of Clements Antiques, which began in Chattanooga in 1938. He built his business from a very small shop in Daisy, Tenn., into a large family-owned operation. His family now operates Clements Antiques and Legacy Antiques in Dallas, Clements Antiques in Destin and Northgate Gallery and Clements Antiques in Hixson.

Mr. Clements was a member and deacon of Middle Valley Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Clements.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Dement Clements of Dallas; four daughters, Brenda Patterson of Chattanooga, Wanda Lewis of Dallas, Sandra Clements Hamilton of Destin and Vicki Garrett of Dallas; a son, Charles W. Clements Jr. of Chattanooga; 10 brothers and sisters; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Greg Dement of Rockwall, Texas, and Matt Dement of Tetonia, Idaho; a stepdaughter, Amy Dement Brown of Rockwall, Texas; and two step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at the Hixson Church of Christ with Minister Jim Clements and Minister John Cupp officiating.

Private interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Chattanooga Christian Services, 744 McCellre Ave., Suite 329, Chattanooga, TN 37403; Martin Boyd Christian Center, 6845 Standifer Gap Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421; or Cranial Facial Foundation, 975 E. 3rd St., Chattanooga, TN 37403.

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Harry Lee "Dewey" Duhart

Harry Lee "Dewey" Duhart died Dec. 25, 2000, in his home in Destin. He was born in Port Allegany, Pa., on Dec. 26, 1916.

He is survived by his wife, Ricky; two sisters, Doris Gilmore of Del Ray and Clarita Heydrick of Asheville, N.C.; two sons, Armat and Dean of St. Louis and their wives; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Harry Lee and Adele Koch Duhart, and by two brothers, Armat and Roy Duhart.

He attended Purdue University Engineering School before enlisting in the Army to serve in World War II in the European theater and the Battle of the Bulge. Afterward he moved to St. Louis and opened Duhart Packaging-Equipment. His son, Armat, is carrying on that tradition. Mr. Duhart was also past-president of Allied Drug and Chemical Industries of Missouri Inc., in St. Louis.

The Duharts moved to Destin from St. Louis in 1984 and built a home in Indian Bayou, where they have resided. Mr. Duhart served on the board of directors of Destin Water Users since 1988, and, at the time of his death, was vice president.

Mr. Duhart's father was a 33rd Mason, and he was a 32nd Mason and had been awarded his 50-year pin.

By his request, he was cremated and will not have a memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to Port Allegany Lodge 505 F&AM, Port Allegany, Pa., or to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis.

Cremation by National Cremation Society.

Fannie V. Ewing

Fannie V. Ewing, 84, mother of JoAnn Mathis of Seagrove Beach, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, after a brief illness.

Mrs. Ewing was a native and long-time resident of Douglas, Ga., where she was a member of Douglas First Baptist Church. After her husband died several years ago, Mrs. Ewing moved to Seagrove Beach.

Mrs. Ewing, a gardener and seamstress, contributed to the success of her daughter's garden shop, Pickets.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Ewing's survivors include a son, John Ewing, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted in Douglas on Dec. 27.

William Calvert "Cal" Clements

William Calvert "Cal" Clements, 78, of Fort Walton Beach died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at his home.

Clements was born on Sept. 8, 1922, in Charleroi, Pa. He served his country in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War. He retired as a lieutenant colonel Aug. 7, 1970, from Hurlburt Field Special Operations.

Clements attended Penn State University, where he broke several scoring records on his way to becoming an All-American basketball player. He later earned his master's degree in political science from the University of Nebraska.

During his 27-year career in the Air Force, he earned his wings in Carlsbad, N.M., to later become a bombardier for the 307th Bomb Group. He flew 62 combat missions over southern France and was awarded several air medals.

After retiring from the Air Force, Clements became active in several fraternal organizations. He earned his Scottish Rite of Free Masonry 32nd degree and was elected president of the National Sojourners #252 of Tampa. The Elks Lodge #708 of Tampa chose him as "Elk of the Year" in 1986.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Harrison Clements; his mother, Margaret Calvert Clements, of Charleroi; his daughter Diana Lee Koski of Portsmouth, N.H.; and granddaughter Jody Clements of Pensacola.

Survivors include his sons, John Harrison "Corky" Clements of Divide, Colo.; and Rick Clements of Fort Walton Beach; daughters-in-law Melody Clements of Divide; and Jan Clements of Fort Walton Beach; grandchildren Tami Kirkland of Pensacola, Sonya Baroni of Lee, N.H., Ken Koski of Portsmouth, Kelly Nicole Clements and Christopher Lee Clements of Fort Walton Beach and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Northwest Florida, 101 Hart St., Niceville, FL 32578.

Emerald Coast Funeral Home of Fort Walton Beach is entrusted with arrangements.

Dora Caver

Dora Elizabeth Caver, 78, Destin, died Dec. 20, 2000. She was born in Pennell, Okla., on Sept. 22, 1922, the daughter of the late Asa and Ruby Leeder. She had been a resident of Destin since 1951.

Mrs. Caver was a founding member of Destin Assembly of God, having served as a Sunday school teacher for 40 years. She was also a poll worker at Precinct 22 and served as a volunteer at local nursing homes, including Destin Healthcare and Rehabilitation.

She is survived by her children, Ruby Phillips, Crestview; Larry Caver, Mobile, Ala.; Mary Whitley, Crestview; Billy Caver, DeFuniak Springs; one sister, Joyce Willis, Atlanta, Ga.; brothers Robert Lee Leeder, Allen Reed, Texas, and Lloyd Wayne Phillips, Oregon; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Caver Jr., and a son, Leon Caver III.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at the Destin Assembly of God with the Rev. Joey Rogers, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Destin Memorial Cemetery.

Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 113 Racetrack Road NE, Fort Walton Beach, is in charge of arrangements.

Kathleen Elizabeth Melvin Jones

Kathleen Elizabeth Melvin Jones, 98, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Jones was born at Point Washington on April 15, 1902, to the late Corell and Thomas Melvin. She moved to Destin and married Capt. Homer Jones in 1917. The couple lived on the hill now known as East Pass Marina.

At the time of her death, Mrs. Jones was under the care of Hospice of Northwest Florida.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband; daughters Correll L. Jones Morris and Mildred L. Jones Castro; her son Aubrey D. Jones; and son-in-law James Morris.

She is survived by her son, Capt. Herman "Fred" Jones, Destin; daughters-in-law Grace Jones, Fort Walton Beach and Dot Jones, Destin; and a son-in-law Arnold Castro, Pensacola; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A visitation is planned for 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, at Emerald Coast Funeral Home. Services will be conducted from the funeral home at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, with the Rev. Frank Dole officiating. Burial will follow in Marler Memorial Cemetery on Calhoun Avenue in Destin.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Florida or to the Marler Memorial Cemetery, Destin, John Moore, treasurer.

Emerald Coast Funeral Home in Fort Walton Beach is in charge of arrangements.

William Edward "Pete" Frey

William Edward "Pete" Frey, 59 of Griffin, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at his residence.

Mr. Frey was born June 27, 1941, in Marietta, Ga., to the late William Moultrie and Geneva Sellers Frey. He was an attorney in Jonesboro, Ga., where he practiced law for 31 years. He was a solicitor of Clayton County for 10 years.

Mr. Frey was also a general aviation pilot and a member of First Baptist Church of Griffin.

Survivors include his wife, Toni C; son and daughter-in-law Steven M. and Rebecca Frey of Newnan; grandson William Edward "Hoolie" Frey II of Newnan; granddaughter Frances Wesley Frey of Newnan; mother Geneva Miller of Griffin; brothers Joe Miller of Covington, John Miller of Griffin and Stephen Miller of Jonesboro; sister Shannon Eller of Griffin; and stepmother Sarah Frey of Marietta.

Mr. Frey lived in Destin for approximately 20 years.

Services were conducted Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the First Baptist Church of Griffin with interment following in Kennesaw Memorial Park in Marietta.

Thomas John Jordan

Thomas John Jordan, 16, died Nov. 15, 2000.

Survivors include his parents, Tommy and Lori Jordan; grandparents T.C. and Vicki Jordan, Century, and Lorraine Morris, Santa Rosa Beach; a sister, Danielle; aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were conducted in Atmore, Ala., Monday, Nov. 20. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Donations may be made to First Union Bank in Destin.

James Earl Ray Jr.

Capt. James Earl "Jimmy" Ray Jr., 53, went down with his ship on Nov. 6, 2000, in the Gulf of Mexico.

He was born on Sept. 4, 1947, in Montgomery, Ala.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ray; sons Justin Ray and Aaron Ray; daughters Jaime S. Truck and Kristi L. Ray; stepdaughters Susie Clemmons and Penny Cameron; seven grandchildren; parents James Earl Ray Sr. and Teresa L. Ray; brothers Edward G. Ray and John R. Ray; and sister Aime Hubbard.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, Nov. 17, at Crosspoint Church, Santa Rosa Beach. The Rev. Mike Hesse officiated. Burial followed in Gulf Cemetery.

Clary-Godwin Freeport Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
