Ida Calhoun Burritt
Ida Calhoun Burritt, formerly of Destin, died June 23 in Austin, Texas.
She was born on Oct. 18, 1907, in Nashville, and lived and traveled throughout the United States and in many foreign countries.
Ida was the seventh of the eight children born to Tyler and Ida Reid Calhoun, the last survivor of her notable generation. For years, she was a prominent Destin resident and was the first editor of The Log.
Preceding her in death were her sisters, Dorothy (Mrs. G.P.) Winton, Alice (Mrs. H.M.) Cox, Corinne (Mrs. J.E.) Bailey and Maria (Mrs. W.F.) Winton, and her brothers, Col. Tyler Calhoun Jr., George Reid Calhoun III and Maj. Gen. Wm. Roberts Calhoun. Her husband of 56 years, Col. George E. Burritt, died in 1990.
After Ida’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tyler Calhoun, settled in Destin in 1931, Ida and her daughter, “Chinky”, treasured their frequent visits to Destin and the friendships made over the years.
Ida and Red Burritt moved to Destin in 1973 and both immediately became involved in local activities, devoting the remainder of their active lives to community causes.
When The Destin Log first was published, Ida saw the need for an experienced editor and volunteered her services. For several more years, she was a part–time writer.
She served as a volunteer librarian for the all–volunteer Destin Library. She played a role in the founding of several local clubs and was a driving force behind the establishment of Shelter House.
Both Red and Ida were active in regional politics. Ida once ran for tax collector against a 19–year incumbent.
She was a spirited activist for women’s rights and served as president of the local chapter of the National Organization for Women. She tutored children in math and English.
To her delight, Ida was regularly invited to gatherings of Destin’s “old timers.”
At the age of 85, unable to drive to night meetings and experiencing the first limitations of Alzheimer’s, Ida resigned from her several “jobs,” observing , “If they can’t find anyone younger than 85 to do the work, they’re in trouble.”
In her 20 years in Destin, Ida made an impact on the community.
In 1993, she was named one of Destin’s “Outstanding Seniors,” an honor she thoroughly enjoyed.
Then, in 1998, she was inducted into the Okaloosa County Women’s Hall of Fame.
Surviving are her daughter, Ida Calhoun Scott of Austin, Texas; grandsons Hugh Calhoun Scott and wife, Susi, of Cypress, Texas, and Craig Baxter Scott and wife, Lillian, of Cape May Court House, N.J.; and great-grandsons, Tyler and Donald.
Locally, she is survived by niece Ethel Calhoun Forrest; nephew Sam Harlan Calhoun; and nieces–in–law, June Winton and Carolyn Cox.
Ida’s body was willed to medical science and she directed that there be no memorial service. If her friends wish to support causes that were close to her heart, the family suggests Shelter House, P.O. Box 220, Fort Walton Beach, Fl., Destin Library or Old Destin Post Office Museum.
Loyce Grice Trotman
Loyce Grice Trotman, 76, of DeFuniak Springs, passed away at her home on June 19 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born in Walton County on July 31, 1924, the fourth child of Jack and Bessie Grice of Red Bay. She graduated from Walton High School in 1942 and was among the first group of women to attend the University of Florida. She worked on the assembly line at Eglin Field during World War II and was a teacher at Gaskin and served as Gaskin’s girl’s basketball coach.
Later she went to work for HRS, serving in many capacities but most notably was her involvement with children’s services as a case manager.
Children were Mrs. Trotman’s life; her love for them and her yearning for their safety and well-being spilled into her personal and home life, where she delighted in her own children and grandchildren.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church of DeFuniak Springs.
Trotman was preceded in death by her husband, William Vernon Trotman; brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Irene Grice; and a sister, Elizabeth Dell Roach.
Survivors include her two sos and their families, Charles and Beth Trotman and children, Karen and William Trotman; Steve and Kathi Trotman and children, David and Robin Langord and Sean and Katie Trotman, all of DeFuniak Springs; sister, Vesta “Anne” Owen and husband, George, of Delray Beach; brother, Dub Grice and wife, Shirley, of DeFuniak Springs; brother-in-law, Charles “Starkey” Roach.
Trotman is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and will also be missed by the many children whose lives she touched.

Christine Margaret Moen
Christine Margaret Moen, 52, of Destin, passed away quietly on the morning of Friday, June 15, 2001.
Moen was born in Seattle on June 6, 1949. Prior to moving to Destin, she resided in Grafton, Ohio.
Moen was an avid traveler. She had been to Norway, Switzerland, France, England, the Caribbean Islands, Alaska and Hawaii.
Her favorite pastime was flying in her dad’s airplane throughout the United States with Las Vegas as their most frequent destination. Although her travels took her far, her favorite place to be was on the white beaches of Destin, where she loved driving her sports cars, especially her Corvette.
Moen was preceded in death by her mother, Barbe; her brother, David; and earlier this year by her father, Alfred Moen, an inventor.
Moen will be greatly missed by her brother, Eric, his wife, Yvonne, of North Ridgeville, Ohio; sister-in-law, Edie Moen of Gibsonia, Pa.; her niece; Sarah; of Gibsonia Pa.; nephews Jeremy and wife, Julie, Nicholas and wife, Justine, Shawn, Abe of North Ridgeville, Ohio, and many cousins.
Services were scheduled for Tuesday at McLaughlin Mortuary in Fort Walton Beach.
O.O. Scroggin III
Retired Lt. Col. O.O. Scroggin III, age 77, of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2001, with congestive heart failure.
He was born on Oct. 5, 1923, in Little Rock, Ark. He was known as "Double O" or "Scrog" to folks who knew him well, but his sister Mary always called him Oliver. O.O. had an amazing life. He joined the U.S. Air Force at age 18. He flew P47s and P51s in World War II, and flew F86s in Korea. He was an aeronautical engineer and a test pilot for 10 years at Wright Patterson, Eglin and Edwards Air Force Bases. Lt. Col. Scroggin served as a forward air controller with the Air Commandos during two tours in Vietnam, during which he was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in combat. He also received many other commendations, including a Purple Heart.
After 30 years in the Air Force, he bought his own plane to pursue his love of flying. O.O. also loved camping, fishing and raising English Pointers.
O.O. was a member of St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea Anglican Church in Destin, Fla.
He is survived by his former wife of 33 years, Mary Scroggin and their four children with spouses: Dub and June Scroggin of Tucson, Ariz., Jeff and Lynn Scroggin of Atlanta, Jenny and Jamey Presto of Jacksonville, Fla., and Clay and Debra Scroggin of Tampa, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Dionna, Julie, Misty, John, Julie, Justin, Jim, and Maggie. Also, four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Colby, and twins Kayleigh and Andrew. He is survived by his only sister, Mary Scroggin Beegle and husband Monty of Little Rock, Ark. His parents and two brothers preceded him in death.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at McLaughlin Mortuary on Saturday, June 16. A visitation will take place from 10 to 11 a.m., with the service immediately following at 11 a.m. The Rev. Mike Hesse will officiate. O.O. will be buried, with full military honors, in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., on July 2.

James L. Keith
Master Sgt. James L. Keith, 69, U.S. Air Force, retired, passed away Monday, June 11, 2001, at his home in DeFuniak Springs.
He was born in Caryville, Fla., to the late James Vermon and Naomi Lee Foxworth Keith. He retired from the Air Force with more than 22 years of active service.
Keith was also retired administrator with the Odessa Medical Center inOdessa, Texas. He was Baptist by faith and a lifelong resident of northwest Florida, except for his military career.
Survivors include his son, Byron Keith, and wife, Vicky, of Whitehouse, Texas; daughters, Lisa Carden, and husband, Danny, of Pinckney, Mich.; and Katurah Keith of Seattle; brothers, Kenneth V. Keith and wife, Virginia, of DeFuniak Springs; Charles P. Keith and wife, Barbara, of Lynchburg, Va.; and George W. Keith and wife, Sarah, of DeFuniak Springs; and two grandchildren.
Services were scheduled for Thursday at Commander Funeral Home Chapel with an Air Force chaplain officiating. Burial, with full military honors, was to follow in Bagdad Cemetery in Bagdad, Fla.
Comander Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Joseph Bayerl
Senior citizen Joseph Bayerl passed away June 1st. He was a long time resident of Destin.
Joe was a good husband, father, friend, and neighbor. Plus a great bridge player.
Joe leaves his wife Genevieve; daughter Patricia Worley; son-in-law Robert Worley; grand daughter Allison Worley. Also a son Robert Bayerl and daughter-in-law Karen Bayerl.
We all loved you and will miss you, Joe.
Cleo Spence Smith
Cleo Spence Smith, age 96, died Sunday, June 3, in DeFuniak Springs, Fla. She was born Sept. 27, 1904 in Calhoun County, Fla., the daughter of the late James Oscar and Nevada Lewis McLean. She was a lifelong resident of DeFuniak Springs. She was a member of Southwide Baptist Church. When she was active, she enjoyed attending church and teaching Sunday School. She was a very faithful servant of the Lord. It has been said if there was ever a matriarch of Southwide Baptist Church it would be her. She is preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Grady Spence and her second husband, Wesley P. Smith of six months, due to his untimely death. She is also preceded in death by two daughters, Margaret Spence and Betty Spence, one son, Dr. Thomas Grady Spence, five brothers and four sisters. She was well loved by everyone.
Survivors include her daugher, Mary Sue Cawthon Prescott and husband, Jimmy of DeFuniak Springs;daughter-in-law, Jaque Spence of DeFuniak Springs; sister, Loma Mae Brown and husband, George Willie of Freeport; seven grandchildren, Kathryn Ward and her husband, John Frank, Peck Cawthon, Shari Anderson and husband, Frank, Sarah Meleney and husband, Mark, Libby Irwin and husband, Bob, Laurie Spence and Mary Grace McCord and husband, Chuck; three step-grandchildren, Tim Prescott and wife, Susie, Chuck Prescott and wife, Cynthia and Rob Prescott and wife, Kayla and five step-great-grandchildren.
A time of visitation will be held from 6 to 8p.m., Tuesday, June 4, at Clary-Godwin Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at Clary-Godwin Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Hogg officiating. Burial will follow in Southwide Baptist Church Cemetery.

Rubye Holland Burton
Rubye Holland Burton, 101, of DeFuniak Springs, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001.
She was born on Jan. 9, 1900, in Dudley, Ga., the daughter of Jessie Jasper and Mary Lou Vinson Holland.
Mrs. Burton was a member of the DeFuniak Springs Garden Club, served on the Board of Regents of Okaloosa-Walton Community College, was in the Hall of Fame of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs Inc., and a member of First United Methodist Church of DeFuniak Springs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Burton; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Carolyn and Charles King Jr.; and niece, Mary Lou Roberts.
Survivors include her grandsons, Chuck King and wife Judy of Destin, Niles King of Blue Mountain Beach, and Chris King and wife Debra of Point Washington; granddaughter, Holly Kroland and husband Alan of DeFuniak Springs; great-grandchildren, Catherine Matthews and husband Wilbur, Chip King and wife Trish, Niles King Jr., Kristen Howell and husband Jason, and Sarah King and Daniel King; great-great-grandsons, Cameron and Carson King; great-nieces, Becky Nagle and husband Bob, Beth Vespaziani and Deborah Roberts.
