Ralph E. Nelson Jr.

Ralph E. Nelson Jr., 73, of Destin, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, in a local nursing home after a three-year battle with bone marrow cancer.

He was born Aug. 27, 1928, in Orange, Mass., and was retired from General Electric Co. as a division financial manager. He is a graduate of Northeastern University in Boston.

Survivors include his wife, M. Louise Nelson of Destin; sons, Daniel J. Nelson of Mount Juliet, Tenn., and Thomas Nelson of Syracuse, N.Y.; daughters, Kathlyn Nelson Rose of Bowling Green, Ky., and Cynthie Nelson Rose of Mount Sterling, Ky.; brother, Richard E. Nelson of Phillipston, Mass.; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. today at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church in Bonifay with Father Joe Caffrey officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, Route 4, Box 643, Bonifay, FL 32425.

McLaughlin Mortuary in Fort Walton Beach is handling the arrangements.

Miles V. Martin

Miles V. Martin, 82, died Sunday, May 13, in DeFuniak Springs.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1918, in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Miles A. and Eleanor Jones Martin. He was a 51-year resident of DeFuniak Springs. He was a member of Salem Presbyterian Church in Washington College, Tenn., member of AMVETS 178 in DeFuniak Springs, National Rifle Association, Northwest Florida Dog Hunters Association and the National Poultry Association of Florida.

Mr. Martin was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and Korea, where he received two Purple Hearts for outstanding valor. He was also a retired aircraft mechanic with civil service at Eglin Air Force Base.

He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Matthews Martin in 1985; and daughter Eleanor Martin Theriot in 1987.

Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Ovie Ann Martin of DeFuniak Springs; children Miles E. Martin of Limestone, Tenn., Margaret "Peggy" Duty and husband Norman, James M. Martin, and Mark Allen Martin and wife Lisa Ann, all of DeFuniak Springs; stepdaughter Lois Martin and husband Tommy of Limestone; brother John W. Martin and wife Doris of Sunbury, Pa.; aunt Jessie Moore of Telford, Tenn.; 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church with the Revs. Owen Smith, Harry Driggers and Phil McMillian officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.

A time of visitation will be conducted at the church one hour prior to services.

Flowers are being accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the building fund at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, or to the American Diabetes Association.

Clary-Godwin Funeral Home, DeFuniak Springs, is in charge of arrangements.

Karen C. Buryanek

Karen C. Buryanek, 44, of Destin, died Saturday, May 5.

Mrs. Buryanek is survived by her husband of 15 years, George; daughter Marche Smalcer of Strongsville, Ohio; son Mark Buryanek of Destin; parents Lucille and John Malicki of Strongsville; brother John S. Malicki and wife Patsy of Waterford, Mich.; and nephew John Steven Malicki IV of Waterford.

The family will received friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, at Emerald Coast Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 10, at the funeral home with Father Paul White officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Karen C. Buryanek Memorial Fund, 264 Okeechobee Cove, Destin, FL 32541.

Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 113 Racetrack Road, Fort Walton Beach, is entrusted with arrangements.

Retired U.S. Army Col. Arthur N. Crowell died Friday, May 18, 2001, in a local hospital.

Col. Crowell was born on March 1, 1941, in Silver Creek, N.Y., to the late George Leigh and Clara Crowell.

He was a graduate of West Point Military Academy. He held a master's degree in mathematics and was a member of the American Legion Post 953 in New York; VFW Post 2522, New York; Association of United State Military Academy Graduates; member of Regatta Bay Golf and Country Club of Destin; Mount Vernon Country Club, Virginia; and Destin United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Judith Marsh Crowell of Destin; sons, Steven L. Crowell and wife Christine of Lakeland, Andrew L. Crowell and wife Sheri of Front Royal, Va., and Timothy L. Crowell and wife Alicia of New Orleans; brothers, Ralph L. Crowell and wife Wanda of Okeechobie, and Elmer N. Crowell and wife Jackie of Forestville, N.Y.; grandchildren, Nicholas, Anthony and Krista; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, at Destin United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Friedman officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Aplastic Anemia Foundation; the Arthur Crowell Memorial Fund at Vanguard Bank; or to your favorite charity.

McLaughlin Mortuary is entrusted with arrangements.

James F. Hayes Jr.

James F. Hayes Jr., 81, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001.

Hayes was born on Dec. 15, 1919, in Walton County, the son of the late James Franklin Hayes Sr. and Cora Lee Ragsdale Hayes. He was a retired automobile and boat mechanic.

In retirement he operated the Hayes Playhouse in DeFuniak Springs, a teen-age recreational center. He was also an honorary deputy with the Walton County Sheriff's Department. He attended Concerned Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marguerite Hayes of DeFuniak Springs; children, James M. Hayes and wife, Hazel, Cora Elizabeth Diamond and husband, Robert, all of DeFuniak Springs, Lacy Louise Edge and husband, Ronald, of Fort Walton Beach, Larry Eugene Hayes and wife, Tanya Griffiths, of Pensacola, and C. Olyvia Eldridge and husband, Jim, of Naples; brother, Donald Morris and wife, Nelda, of Caryville; sister, Frances Arnette of Cantonment; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral services were scheduled for Friday with the Rev. James Campbell officiating. Burial was to follow in Center Ridge Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Walton County Convalescent Center or Concerned Christian Church.

Margaret R. Allan

Margaret R. Allan, 89, of Panama City, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001.

Allan was born and raised in Iowa where she graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1934 and later did graduate work at Florida State University. She moved to Bay County in 1935.

She worked for the Bay County school system for 30 years, first at Panama Grammar and then retiring in 1971 from Bay High School where she was a teacher and librarian.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Panama City, Women's Progressive Bible Class, Sara Circle, Friday Angel Club, former member of A.A.U.W. Pilot Club and Senior Friendship Club.

Allan was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Oran J. Allan, who died in 1991.

She is survived by a son, Merlin Allan and wife, Deanna, of Destin; granddaughters Tracey Gwaltney, Kristi Penuel and her husband, Charles, and Suzette Allan, all of Birmingham, Ala., Joanna Coley and her husband, Sean, of Mobile, Ala.; six great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters; and sisters-in-law Helen Allan Stansberry of Winter Park and Evelyn Riggs of Montgomery, Ala.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Panama City.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Library Fund of First United Methodist Church, 903 E. Fourth St., Panama City, FL 32401.

Murry Ray Metcalf

Murry Ray Metcalf, 76, of Destin, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Emory L. Bennett Florida Veterans Hospital in Daytona Beach.

Metcalf was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Martha Metcalf; and brother Maurice D. Metcalf.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Jeanette Williamson Metcalf of Destin; son, David Williamson Metcalf of Panama City; daughter, Melanie Anne Metcalf of Destin; sister, Mary Esther Metcalf Boote of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Dustin James Parkman, Emily Anne Metcalf, Ashley Nicole Metcalf and Allison Marie Metcalf; and several nieces and nephews.

Metcalf was a native of Coffee County, Ala., and a former resident of Metcalf Road in Bonifay. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was the retired owner/operator of D&M Tire Store in Geneva, Ala.

He attended Jacksonville University and the University of Florida and was a member of Bethlehem Masonic Lodge and of Village Baptist Church in Destin.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Bonifay, with burial in Bonifay City Cemetery.

Peel Funeral Home in Bonifay is in charge of arrangements.

Shelby Havlik Johnson

Shelby Havlik Johnson, 63, died April 30, 2001, in Dallas.

Johnson was a retired real estate representative.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Sarah Maynard; five brothers; and husband, John Havlik.

Survivors include her husband, Rob Johnson of Carrolton, Texas; daughter Janet (Mike) Kromer; son Jim (Dawn) Head; sister Jewel (Perry) Belcher of Lebanon, Tenn.; grandchildren Christina, Allison and Christopher of Hollywood; great-grandchild Ashlyn of Hollywood; and niece Amanda Belcher of Destin.

Memorial services will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at Clement Taylor Park on Calhoun Drive in Destin with the Rev. John Friedman, Destin United Methodist Church, officiating. In case of rain, services will be at 5:30 p.m., Sunday at Destin United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Shelby Johnson.

Helen W. Lane

Helen W. Lane, 74, died after a lengthy illness in Destin on April 28, 2001.

Lane was born on Dec. 31, 1926, in Prescott, Ark., to the late Vernon and Clara Warren.

She began her business career in Washington, D.C., before moving to Memphis, where she met her late husband, Jack E. Lane Sr. They semi-retired to Destin where they were both real estate professionals.

She was a member of Destin United Methodist Church.

Lane was preceded in death by brothers Horace and Everett Warren. She is survived by a sister, Carolyn, and her husband, Dan White, of Houston; her children, Margie Kushion of Destin, Flo Timmer of Jackson, Miss., Jack E. Lane Jr. of Destin and James P. Lane of Crestview.

Graveside services were conducted Monday at Destin Memorial Cemetery with John Friedman, pastor of Destin United Methodist Church, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to charity in Lane's memory.

Emerald Coast Funeral Home in Fort Walton Beach was in charge of arrangements.
