George R. Brand Jr.

George Robert Brand Jr., 67, of Santa Rosa Beach, died April 21 in a Pensacola hospital.

Born on Dec. 7, 1935, in Danville, Ark., he was the son of the late Robert William Brand Sr. and Martha Viola Forlines Brand. George lived in Santa Rosa Beach for the past 18 years. He was formerly of Rockford, Ill., where he was a member of Masonic Lodge F&AM 1145. George was Baptist by faith and was a member of South Walton Baptist Church in Santa Rosa Beach. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, music and loving his grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Abernathy.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Emma Brand; son, Marty Brand, and wife, Tina, of Santa Rosa Beach; daughter, Deloria Sue Brand of Santa Rosa Beach; brothers, Emmanual Brand of Clubb, Mo., Ronald Brand of Freeport, Larry Brand of Walnutridge, Ark.; sisters, Edna Hargate of Rockford, Va., Abernathy and husband, Floyd, of Tempa, Ga., Peggy Corneilson of Ocala and Patricia Keenan of Rockford; and six grandchildren.

Services were conducted April 25 at Clary-Godwin Freeport Chapel in Freeport, with the Rev. Ken Coots officiating.

Clary-Godwin/Comander Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Col. Emil A. “Bud” Kremer

Col. Emil Albert Kremer, 82, of Destin, died April 19.

He was born in Pittsburgh on Dec. 14, 1919 to Rosalia F. “Stella” Berner and Emil J. Kremer.

Bud was a decorated World War II pilot, serving in the China Burma India campaign with the 7th Bomb Group from 1942-43. During that mission, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross. After serving in World War II, he returned home to finish his college education and graduated from Duquensne University. He later served as ROTC professor at Harvard University. Other military assignments included 10 years with the Strategic Air Command. During this time, he served as a comptroller at SAC headquarters in Omaha. His final military assignment was spent as commander of ROTC at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

After 30 years of military service, he retired and started a second career with Gulf States Paper Corp. in Tuscaloosa and retired after 10 years there.

In 1981, Bud and his wife moved to Destin, where he enjoyed playing golf and many other outdoor activities. He spent many pleasurable hours on the links at Indian Bayou Country Club with his golfing friends.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Louise McWhorter “Mac” Kremer; daughter, Virginia Baker, and husband, Burke, of Destin; stepson, Stephen Sauer of Destin; stepdaughter, Mary Andrews, and husband, Mark, of Santa Rosa Beach; sisters Philomene Robbins of Destin, Thelma Gleason of Johnstown, Pa., and Ann Blueming of New Britain, Conn.; and grandchildren Jacob Sauer, Shane Sauer, Ryan Baker and Kelly Baker.

Active pallbearers were Jacob Sauer, Shane Sauer, Burke Baker, Mark Andrews, Patrick O'Neal and Michael O'Neal.

A visitation was held April 22 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Destin, followed by a funeral Mass. A graveside service was held April 23 at Berry Hill Cemetery in Milton with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your favorite charity.

McLaughlin Mortuary in Fort Walton Beach was entrusted with the arrangements.

Olive W. Munn

Olive Wilkinson Munn, 91, of DeFuniak Springs, died April 19 at her residence.

She was born Feb. 21, 1911 in Jasper, Fla. She attended Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee, receiving an associate degree in education in 1931. She taught elementary school at White Springs, Fla., and at the Steele Church School in Walton County, where she taught eight grades in one room during the Depression.

She often worked at the Methodist Church Thrift Shop and for many years was a member of the Methodist Women’s Circle. She was always there to assist people in need and looked after neighbors who were alone or ill. She was a longtime resident of DeFuniak Springs and was the wife of the late Willard E. Munn.

Survivors include two sons, John Munn, and wife, Mary, of Charlotte, N.C., and Donald Munn and wife, Connie, of Savannah, Ga.; one daughter, Janet “Terri” Munn Fass, and husband, Mike, of Miami; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and her beloved cat, Ethel, who was her constant companion for the last 10 years and brought her much joy.

The family has requested that expressions of sympathy be made in Mrs. Munn’s memory to the American Cancer Society or First United Methodist Church of Jasper, Fla.

Graveside services were held April 22 in Magnolia Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Penton officiating. Jerry Evans Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Leona Margaret Wiebe

Leona Margaret Wiebe passed away April 19, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Iriwn Wiebe. Mrs. Wiebe is survived by her brother, Clifford Kittleson of Watertown, S. D., her daughter, Mrs. Raymond R. Olsen of Crestview, Fla., and her son, John I. Wiebe of Plantation, Fla. Raised in western Canada, she married and settled in Sioux Falls, S. D. She moved to the Fort Walton Beach, Fla., area in 1980 and has lived the past five years in Destin. She will be interred in the family plot in Sioux Falls.

Little Chapel Funeral Home, 910 Beal Parkway, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., entrusted with the arrangements.

Sara Waits Hair

Sara Waits Hair, age 83, of Sanford Road, Andalusia, Ala., died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, in Andalusia Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 19, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Janet Looby and Father Bob Randall officiating. Interment will be in Andalusia Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation took place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers were Chris McGlaun, King Tway, Bill Tway, Lamar McGlaun, Marshall Skinner and Les Rue.

Survivors include her husband Byron C. Hair of Andalusia; daughters and sons-in-law, Joy Tway of Andalusia, Ann and Lamar McGlaun of Enterprise, Ala., and Nancy and Marshall Skinner of Destin, Fla.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Sidney Waits (Polly) of Andalusia, and Jimmy Waits of Bruce, Fla.; and sister, Harriet (Bill) Rue of Andalusia.

Foreman-Brown-Service Funeral Home, Andalusia, was in charge of arrangements.

Ricardo Alvarado

Ricardo Alvarado, 63, a Destin resident for 27 years, passed away April 16.

Ricardo served his country for over 22 years in the U.S. Air Force, working in security, communications and firefighting, and retiring as a technical sergeant. After his retirement, Ricardo worked in many different countries. Among his many accomplishments was the establishment of the air to ground communications network in the Middle East for the Contel Corp. For the past 10 years he worked in the communications industry in the panhandle, finally retiring again in 2000.

Ricardo was a Mason for 45 years and a member of numerous veterans’ organizations.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Emilio and Elizabeth Alvarado of Portland, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law, Christina and Stewart Thornton of Destin; grandchildren, Joshuah and Rachel Dickerson; his spouse of 36 years, Amelia Alvarado of Destin; brothers, Joseph and wife Ester of Washington, D.C., and Jesse and wife Alice of Houston; sister, Estella Alvarado of south Florida; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Ricardo was a devoted and loving father who will be deeply missed by his children and family members.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Alvarado was an avid fisherman and boater who loved the Destin area. His ashes will be scattered into the beautiful Gulf of Mexico, uniting him with the waters that he so very much loved.

Howard Harlan

Howard Harlan, 90, of Destin died April 15 at his home.

Howard was born on July 28, 1911, in Washington, D.C. His wife Gertrude preceded him in death. Howard graduated with a BA from the University of Richmond, and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. He taught at various colleges and completed his career at the University of Delaware as chairman of the Sociology Department. He was a World War II veteran, serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.

Howard moved to Bluewater Bay in 1986 and was an active member in the golfing community.

He is survived by his son, Robert; and two grandsons, Matthew Harlan and Christian Segall.

A private memorial service will be held by the family.

Ruby Lee Raines

Ruby Lee “Buck” Raines, 60, a resident of Fort Walton Beach, died April 14 at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., after an extended illness.

Ruby was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War and retired as sergeant first class after a 20-year career in the Army. He was a member of the International Order of Foresters. He was a devoted bass fisherman and enjoyed both freshwater and saltwater angling.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Fred Raines.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Sun O. “Connie” Raines of Fort Walton Beach; daughter, Annie Raines of Destin; his beloved granddaughter and light of his life, Kayla Banjavich; brothers, Thomas Raines of Georgia and Charles Raines of Fort Walton Beach; and sisters, Ellen Catherine Bohanon of Cleveland, Tenn., and Margaret Braswell of New Ellenton, S.C.

Funeral services were conducted April 19 at Emerald Coast Funeral Home. Burial, with military honors, followed in Beal Memorial Cemetery.

Emerald Coast Funeral Home in Fort Walton Beach was in charge of arrangements.

Royce H. Foreman Sr.

Royce Holland Foreman Sr., 55, of DeFuniak Springs, died April 10 in an area hospital.

Royce was born in DeFuniak Springs on Oct. 18, 1946, to Thomas Jefferson and Berla Missouri Infinger Foreman. He was a lifelong resident of DeFuniak Springs and was Baptist by faith. Royce was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving his country in the U.S. Navy for more than six years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and barbecuing with family and friends.

Royce was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Dianna Poole.

He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Shirley Foreman of DeFuniak Springs; sons, Royce Holland Foreman Jr. of DeFuniak Springs and Daniel Scott Foreman and wife, Lisa Kelly Foreman, of DeFuniak Springs; stepdaughters, Cynthia Colitzas and husband, Ken, of Boynton Beach, Renee Mckenzie of Boynton Beach, Felecia Colitzas of Fort Lauderdale; brothers, Cliff Foreman of DeFuniak Springs and Doyle Foreman of Bunker Creek, Fla.; sisters, Mattie Andrews of DeFuniak Springs, Ruth Myres of DeFuniak Springs and Juanita Petrino of Memphis.

A memorial graveside service was scheduled for April 12 in Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Watts officiating.

Clary-Godwin/Comander Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.

Helen Marler Cox

Helen Marler Cox, 89, of Destin, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2002.

She enjoyed flowers and was an avid lover of her family.

Helen was one of the original founders of Destin.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, James Clifton Shirah and T.C. Cox; and daughter, Emily.

She is survived by two sons, James L. Shirah and wife Sandra of Destin, and Gay Shirah and wife Janice of Radford, Va.; and daughter Joan Adkins of Destin; and stepdaughter, Mildred Forbes of Seabrook, Texas. Helen is also survived by two sisters, Pearl Painter and Bill Matthews, both of Destin; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, April 12, at the funeral home, and burial followed in Marler Cemetery in Destin.

Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 113 Racetrack Road, Fort Walton Beach, is handling arrangements.
