Adele B. Thar

Adele Bach Thar died Feb. 26.

She was born in Russia and came to America at the age of 5. Adele was married to Carl J. Thar for 72 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband and by sons, Carl and Richard, and daughter, Jean Conrad.

She is survived by daughter, Elizabeth “Betty” Jablonsky of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters–in–law, Pearl Thar and Sally Thar, and son–in–law, Jerry Conrad of Alabama. Adele also leaves 23 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Adele and her husband lived in Benton, Mich.. for 40 years and then moved to Florida. She loved Destin, having lived her for 20 years.

Adele was been a member of Grace Lutheran Church. Her hobbies were gardening and bird watching.

A memorial service is scheduled to be conducted at 11 a.m. today.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 4100 Two Trees Road, Destin, 32541.

Capt. Wilburn D. Marler

Capt. Wilburn Delbert “Mac” Marler, 77, died Monday, Feb. 25, at William F. Green Veterans Affairs Hospital in Bay Minette, Ala.

He was born Aug. 25, 1924, in Pensacola and was a resident of Destin until 1989.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Capt. Dave and Stella Maltezo Marler, and two sisters, June Marler Lawson and Doris Marler Trammell.

He is survived by his wife, Liz Middleton Marler; son, David E. Marler; stepson, Tracey Thompson; daughters, Deborah Marler Tucker, Anjee Marler, Vickie Burton and Tina Maynard; and brother, David G. Marler. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Capt. Marler was the party boat captain of the New Florida Girl in Destin. He retired in 1989 and moved to Alabama.

He was a member of First Assembly of God in Robertsdale Ala.

Capt. Marler was a veteran of World War II, serving from 1944-46. He served on the USS Drew and the USS Atlanta as a landing barge captain.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Assembly of God, P.O. Box 914, Robertsdale Ala., 36567.

Services are scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at First Assembly of God Church. Contact (251) 947–5890 for information.

A burial at sea service is scheduled for noon Friday at the docks of the New Florida Girl behind Ralph and Kacoo’s Restaurant in Destin. The service will include participation by members of the Destin fishing fleet. Contact Capt. Bill McDonald, 837–1790.

Alvin H. & Edith G. Lurie

Alvin Herman Lurie, born Dec. 16, 1918, passed away peacefully on Feb. 24, and Edith Grace Lurie, born Dec. 28, 1916, joined her husband 14 hours later on Feb. 25.

They are survived by their children, Ella and Michael D’Autilia of Santa Rosa Beach, Marsha Lurie Sachs of Sugarland, Texas, and Stephen and Eleanor Lurie of Gainesville, Ga.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services for both were scheduled for this past Sunday march 3 in Greenwood Cemetery in Florala, Ala.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Florala Library Building Fund, Florala, Ala. 36442.

Doris W. Garnett

Doris Wesley Garnett, 85, of Sebastian Lakes Condos, died Feb. 23 at VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach after a brief illness.

She was a Florida resident, with 16 years in the Destin area, where she was a member of Santa Rosa Golf Club. Doris Spent 14 years as a Sebastian resident. She was a member of Sebastian Christian Church, formerly a member of St. Elizabeth’s.

Garnett worked as a convention coordinator in the hotel industry.

She is survived by two sisters, Mary Himes of North Muskegon, Mich., and Francis Smith of Sebastian; six nieces, Kay Cranmer of Louisville, Karol Van De Venter of St. Petersburg, Mary Propes of Charleston, S.C., Melinda Staten of Louisville, Doris Mascaro of Orlando, Linda Frear of Dewey Beach, Del.; step–niece, Linda Pillot of Almont, Mich.; four nephews, Bill Van De Venter of Louisville, James Himes of Plano, Texas Bill Hisey of Amarillo, Texas, and Fred Hisey of Houston; 15 great–nieces; 12 great–nephews, and numerous great-great-nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her sister, Hazel Ford; brother, P.G. Hisey; and nephew, Arthur Ferguson.

A memorial service was scheduled for 3 p.m. today at Sebastian Christian Church.

The family requests expressions of sympathy to either Sebastian Christian Church, 190 Day Drive, Sebastian, Fla., 32958, or to VNA Hospice House, 1111 36th Street., Vero Beach., Fla. 32960, in memory of Garnett.

Mary Sue Robblee

Mary Sue Robblee, 62, of Destin died Wednesday, Feb. 20.

She was born on March 15, 1939, in Norwood, Mass. She was a resident of the local area since 1972. She married her husband, Avard, on Nov. 25, 1970.

Robblee worked as a medical records transcriber for civil service at various locations, including Cheyenne, Wyo., Patrick Air Force Base, Fla., and Eglin Air Force Base Hospital.

They moved to Carrabelle, Fla., in January 1994 and in 1996 Mary and Avard were diagnosed with cancer. She continued to work at Tallahassee Memorial until 1997 when they moved back to Destin. She received health care in Pensacola Baptist Hospital until she was sent home to be at rest.

She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, First Ward, in Fort Walton Beach. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Avard M. Robblee; daughter, Laura Jean Oniel of Carrabelle, Fla.; two grandchildren; aunt, Dorothy Gregger; cousin, Chuck Gregger of Lake Forest Club near Brounstown, Ind.; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Martin of Seymore, Ind.

Mary was preceded in death by a daughter, Becky Ann Robblee, on Jan. 27.

Services were scheduled for Feb. 25 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fort Walton Beach, with Bishop Ron Rogers officiating. Burial was to be in Beal Memorial Cemetery.

Little Chapel Funeral Home in Fort Walton Beach handled the arrangements.

Jeffrey L. Edgeworth

Jeffrey Leroy Edgeworth, 40, a resident of Santa Rosa Beach, died unexpectedly Feb. 19.

Jeff was born in San Angelo, Texas, on July 16, 1961.

He is survived by his wife, Renee Nickels Edgeworth, whom he considered the “single most important person in his life”; parents, George and Aprill Edgeworth of Destin; daughter, Jennifer Lee Edgeworth of Fort Worth, Texas; brothers, Timothy Edgeworth of Dallas and Richard Hunter Edgeworth of Tampa; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews from Florida to Ohio.

Jeff was an avid fisherman in the local area and worked on the party boat Sweet Jody and the charter boat “Reveille II.”

A memorial service is scheduled to be held at 11 a.m. today at the Community Church, 3524 U.S. 98 West, Santa Rosa Beach. Per Jeff’s request, his ashes will be scattered in the Gulf at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Renee Edgeworth, c/o the Community Church, P.O. Box 1723, Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. 32459.

Joan Ella Phillips

Joan Ella Phillips, 70, of Destin, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, after a brief illness.

She was born on Oct. 19, 1931, in Chicago and was a resident of Destin for more than 15 years.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Phillips of Destin; son, Dr. Paul Phillips of Clearwater, Fla.; daughter, Lynne Phillips-Werbel of Portland, Ore.; sisters, Shirley Schmook of Union Grove, Wis., and Diane Hudlow of Fort Walton Beach; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Services were scheduled for Feb. 22, at McLaughlin Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Steve Olivier officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of Eden State Gardens Pavilion, P.O. Box 4, Point Washington, Fla. 32454.

McLaughlin Mortuary in Fort Walton Beach handled the arrangements.

James Leroy Holland

James Leroy “Jim” Holland, 84, of the Black Creek community of Freeport, passed away late Monday evening, Feb. 18, at the family residence.

He was born on April 22, 1917, in Stonington, Maine, the son of James Edward and Daisey Stockbridge Holland.

Holland was a veteran, having served his country for over 22 years with the Air Force. In 1954, he and his family built their home in the Black Creek community of Freeport, where he was a member and trustee of Black Creek United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Ina Inez Holland of the Black Creek community; daughter, Betty Patton, and husband, Ronnie, of the Black Creek community; granddaughter, Teri Lynn Irwin, and husband, Michael, of Blackmon, Fla.; great-granddaughters, Courtney Fountain and Sarah Hudson; sister, Margaret Grindel of Stonington, Maine; and brothers, Alvernon Holland, and wife, Olive, of Stonington, Carliss Holland, and wife, Lillian, of Belfast, Maine, and Howard Holland of Newport, R.I.

Flowers are being accepted or donations may be made in Holland’s memory to Covenant Hospice, 101 Hart St., Niceville, Fla. 32578.

Services were scheduled for Feb. 21 in Black Creek United Methodist Church with the Revs. David Wilson and Curtis Mixon officiating. Burial was to follow in Black Creek Cemetery, with full military honors.

Jerry Evans Funeral Home in DeFuniak Springs was in charge of arrangements.

Ella Mae Stiller

Ella Mae Stiller, a longtime resident of DeFuniak Springs, died Feb. 16 in the local nursing home.

She was born on Nov. 1, 1910, in Washington County, Fla.

Stiller was a wonderful seamstress and homemaker. She was a loving mother and grandmother and was always ready to help anyone in need. She was Presbyterian by faith and a member of Red Bay Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Stiller; father, Joseph E. Howard; and mother, Ellen Mary Renfroe Howard.

She is survived by daughters Lucille Lynn of DeFuniak Springs, Geraldine Gaines of Franklin, Tenn., and Evelyn Helms of DeFuniak; six grandchildren, Dr. Kenneth Gaines of Franklin, Lamar Gaines of Franklin, Donald Helms Jr. of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., David Helms of Atlanta, Cathy Caswell of DeFuniak Springs and John Hicks of Destin; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Services were scheduled for held Feb. 19 at Clary-Godwin Chapel.

Pallbearers were to be Tellis Rushing (honorary), Ed Gomillion, Walter Ray, Bill Ward, John Law, Sonny Yates and John Grantham.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Red Bay Cemetery Fund, c/o Tellis Rushing, 7494 State Highway 81 South, Ponce de Leon, Fla., 32455.

Clary-Godwin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
